2009 NFL Draft - April 25 / 26

Draft Order

Not determined.

Draft positions are determined by record, the team with the worst record during the regular season picks first and so on. If two teams have the same record, the strength of schedule tie-breaker is used which is the combined winning percentage of all teams on each team's schedule for the current season. If teams are still tied after strength of schedule has been applied, the division or conference tie breakers are used. If teams are still tied after applying all tiebreakers or if two teams are tied that are in different conferences, a coin toss after the season will determnined which team gets priority.

The Super Bowl winner automatically picks 32nd while the Super Bowl loser picks 31st regardless of regular season record. All other playoff teams are placed in the selection order based on their regular season record upon losing their playoff game. If a playoff team and a non-playoff team are tied based on regular season record, the non-playoff team will pick first. If two playoff teams are tied based on regular season record, the team that lost in the earlier round of the playoffs will select first. If both playoff teams that have the same record exited the playoffs in the same round, the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker is applied.

Traded selections

The following selections were traded prior to the 2009 NFL Draft.

First round

Carolina to Philadelphia.

The Carolina Panthers traded their first-round selection in the 2009 Draft, as well as the 43rd and 109th selections in the 2008 Draft, to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 19th overall selection in 2008 (used to select Jeff Otah).

Dallas to Detroit.

The Dallas Cowboys traded their first-round selection in 2009, as well as their third- and sixth-round selections to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Roy Williams and a seventh-round selection in 2009.

Second round

San Diego to New England.

The San Diego Chargers traded their second-round selection in 2009 to the New England Patriots in exchange for New England's third-round selection in 2008 (used to select Jacob Hester).

Washington to Miami.

The Washington Redskins traded their second-round selection in 2009 and their sixth-round selection in 2010 to the Miami Dolphins for Jason Taylor.

New Orleans to New York Giants.

The New Orleans Saints traded their second- and fifth-round selections to the New York Giants in a trade for Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey. If the Saints resign linebacker Jonathan Vilma, however, they may owe that second-round pick to the New York Jets, in which case the Giants will receive the Saints' first-round pick in 2010.

Third round

Cleveland to Dallas.

The Cleveland Browns traded their third-round selection in 2009 to the Dallas Cowboys for Dallas' fourth-round selection in 2008 (used to select Martin Rucker).

Dallas to Detroit.

See first-round trade above.

Fourth round

Detroit to Dallas.

The Detroit Lions traded their fourth-round selection in 2009 to Dallas as part of a trade for Dallas' 2008 third-round selection (used to select Cliff Avril).

Washington to New York Jets.

Washington traded its fourth-round selection in 2009 to the New York Jets as part of a trade for Pete Kendall prior to the 2007 season.

Fifth round

Oakland to Atlanta.

Oakland traded its fifth-round selection to the Atlanta Falcons as part of a trade for DeAngelo Hall.

Cleveland to Philadelphia.

Cleveland traded its fifth-round selection in 2009 to the Philadelphia Eagles for one of Philadelphia's sixth-round selections (used to select Paul Hubbard).

New Orleans to New York Giants.

New Orleans traded their second- and fifth-round selections to the Giants in a trade for Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey.

Tennessee to Dallas.

Pacman Jones' suspension on October 15, 2008, triggered a clause in his trade agreement that required the Titans to give the Cowboys their fifth-round selection in 2009. (The Cowboys would have owed the Titans a sixth-round pick had he not been suspended.)

Seattle to Denver.

Seattle traded its fifth-round selection in 2009 to the Denver Broncos in return for Keary Colbert.

Sixth round

Miami to Dallas.

The Miami Dolphins traded their sixth-round selection to Dallas in the Jason Ferguson trade.

Minnesota to Philadelphia.

The Minnesota Vikings traded their sixth-round selection to Philadelphia in the Kelly Holcomb trade.

New Orleans to Green Bay.

New Orleans traded its sixth-round selection in 2009 to the Green Bay Packers for Green Bay's seventh-round selection in 2008 (used to select Adrian Arrington).

Tampa Bay to Chicago.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded their sixth-round selection to the Chicago Bears in the Brian Griese trade.

Chicago to Tampa Bay.

The Chicago Bears traded their sixth-round selection to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Dan Buenning trade.

Dallas to Detroit.

See first-round trade above.

Washington to Miami.

See second round trade above.

Seventh round

Jacksonville to Tampa Bay.

The Jacksonville Jaguars traded their seventh-round selection to Tampa Bay as part of a trade for Tampa Bay's second-round selection in the 2008 Draft (with which the Jaguars selected Quentin Groves).

Washington to Minnesota.

Washington traded a seventh-round selection to Minnesota for DE Erasmus James.

Cleveland to Miami.

The Cleveland Browns traded their seventh-round selection to the Miami Dolphins for cornerback Travis Daniels.

Carolina to Miami.

The Carolina Panthers traded their seventh-round selection to Miami for QB Josh McCown.

Tampa Bay to Pittsburgh.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded their seventh-round selection to Pittsburgh for OL Sean Mahan.

Detroit to Dallas.

See first-round trade above.

Conditional/Undetermined

Denver to New York Jets.

The Denver Broncos traded an undetermined conditional selection to the New York Jets as part of their trade for DT Dewayne Robertson.

Philadelphia to Indianapolis.

The Philadelphia Eagles traded a conditional 2009 selection to the Indianapolis Colts in return for HB/FB Luke Lawton.

Atlanta to Denver.

The Atlanta Falcons traded a conditional seventh-round pick to the Denver Broncos in return for CB Dominique Foxworth. The pick can increase based on playing time.

New York Jets to Green Bay.

The Jets traded a conditional fourth-round pick to the Green Bay Packers for QB Brett Favre. The pick becomes a third-round pick if Favre takes the majority of the team's snaps at quarterback, a second-round pick if he takes 70 percent of the snaps and the team makes the playoffs, and a first-round pick if Favre takes 80 percent of the snaps at quarterback and the Jets reach Super Bowl XLIII.

New Orleans to New York Jets.

The New Orleans Saints traded a fourth-round pick in 2008 to the New York Jets for Linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Depending on the number of defensive snaps Vilma plays, and whether or not he signs a new contract with the Saints, the Saints may owe the Jets a second-round pick in 2009.

Baltimore to Tampa Bay.

The Baltimore Ravens traded a late round draft pick in 2009 as well as a conditional draft pick in 2010 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for DE Marques Douglas.

Nice thread! :salute:

My selection would be Darren McFadden

We would most likely have to vault into the top 10 (if not higher to get him), but at the rate we are going, a 6-10 or 7-9 season isn't out of the question and could land us a top 10 pick....

I LOVE the Broncos and hope they do well the rest of the way, but ever since New Years Eve last season, the Broncos have seemed to be down on their luck....

Nice work, Nick. Much appreciated.

My selection would be Darren McFadden

It will never happen. He's gone in the top 5 barring some kind of mass mind control tactics. He might be the only truely "elite" prospect in the draft.

What you are talking about is the slots of going to playoffs and ahead of people on obtaining a playoff birth. You are reading this as a "inaccurate assessment" for draft order up to date" after each game is played.

I am listing what the draft order if season ended today. This is based on record... then stregth of schedule... then if tied goes to a coin flip. Nothing to do with what you are looking at.

The bases of going to Playoffs is far different then draft picks.

Nice thread!

And for the post of McFadden why do that when the first round may be the most loaded with top shelf backs in recent history? Darren McFadden - Arkansas, Jonathan Stewart - Oregon, Rashard Mendenhall - Illinois, Felix Jones - Arkansas and Kevin Smith - Central Florida?

Denver could easily walk away if they chose with a first round caliber halfback and Mendenhall or Stewart are more likely then the others!

but in addition to the amount of solid backs in first round and the solid depth at wide receivers in the first couple rounds... There should be a lot of people fall. This is the year to have alot more pick in the first couple rounds.

Sadly unlike the wideout department the halfbacks will not be anything great come the latter third round and on. Second day possibles would be Kalvin McRae from Ohio and possibly Calvin Dawson from Louisiana-Monroe. And even then none could be the caliber of the top five in this years draft. Whereas receivers, solid receivers will be their throughout: My steal of the draft is the wideout from Duquesne, Bruce Hocker at 6'4, 205lbs. a 4.44 forty and averaging 17 yards per catch he could be a steal in the second day.

But with the top five caliber backs in this draft and the amount of talent in the first round in all other catagories. I do not see all 5 going in first. I see atleast 2 going in 2nd round.

Wow...you are one of the first! And still I can not, maybe one and he would be gone before the top ten in the second round. Denver if they want a top caliber halfback will have to pull the trigger early. And there will be quality pushed elswhere as is...I am not saying you are wrong, I just do not see a way for Denver...without selling the farm getting into position for a topshelf back after the first round.

ohhh I do not think any will fall to Denver. I just think a couple will fall out of first round and be a early 2nd round.

How ever I see the Broncos with far bigger needs then RB.

I do and don't, yes we need a big line eating tackle; Okam though is going to be mid to high teens and Sedrick Ellis even if available will not fit well in Denver...Kenny Phillips is a good pickup, but I think he will be long gone. I surely do not see Shanahan throwing top dollar on another linebacker...So how do you see them drafting? I have my early mock draft done already! But I would like to see how you have them drafting with the lack of positioning they will have, even if they moved up.

I really have not done a mock yet. As far as how I would like them drafting is trading down. Aquiring more picks.

If we stand put at lets say 12... Ellis or Phillips whom ever drops to us. As far as Okam. I would not mind but think he will be available in 20-25 pick. So I would rather trade down and pick him up. Shanny is known for reaching for people though. If Phillips does not come out or he is already selected... I do not want the Broncos to select a Saftey in the other rounds. Their is however some talent at deffensive tackle in the second round.

I see our broncos getting a wide reciever on first day though.

In addition I do not see them getting a running back early.

I do not see them getting offensive line early and there will be very talented bunch of players in the second day that will be great on our team.

I mean how awsome would that for the Broncos to come up with Limas swead out of Texas, Bennet whom as a great relationship on field with Cutler and Okam!

Cutler is a gun slinger with no weapons.

I will mess around with all of this... I just hating not knowing what juniors are going to come out. So will try and make a detailed draft as to my thoughts on selections. Maybe in a week (Over Christmas weekend).

Phillips declared for the draft near two days ago I believe...and I still do not see him dropping to us. Sedrick Ellis, you can count him out pretty much he neither fits the defense we have and is more a pass rushing tackle and that is far from needed in Bates's system. Receiver will not happen in the first, no matter what people would like to believe...even offensive tackle is a longshot when Denver will look for a veteran to step it up immediatley and not wait a year or two. Shanahan could trade down as you stated, but I do not see that happening, he did that before and all the picks are no longer on the squad, since gaining ground in the past four he has a better overall draft record...I know he watches it, so the only way I see them going in the first is if Phillips drops to us, maybe Ryan Clady, Rashard Mendenhall or Jonathan Stewart!

I just can not see the Broncos getting a running back in the first day. I will not be suprised if they reach a little for Okam though if Ellis is gone, But Ellis is by far the 2nd best DT in draft. He is not bad what so ever against the run. He will be able to provide great penetration in NFL. Just not a clogger.

Clady reminds me of Levi Brown.

I do see the Cowboys moving up in this draft and would love the broncos to be part of that.

If they stay put Both DT's gone (Dorsey, Ellis) and Phillips... and they do not reach for okam whom is a late round 1... and do not trade down.

They will go LB. Rivers or Conner.

And that is a problem, the Bates system wants a clogger not a tackle better known for penetration like Ellis. If we were running the Coyle 4-3 then Ellis would be a good fit, but Bates had to scrap his system by week four because the lack of ability to use his system and you think they would pick another who does not fit the system?

We will just have to differ on the point! ;)

If we were running the Coyle 4-3 then Ellis would be a good fit, but Bates had to scrap his system by week four because the lack of ability to use his system and you think they would pick another who does not fit the system?

We will just have to differ on the point! ;)

I understand Bates system and what we need on the D Line but you can not pass up better talent to have a clogger.

I know he likes the DT's to plug the middle so ends can do what they need to do. Which make me not suprised if they reach for okam or trade down to aquire him or Red in 2nd... Either way both will be a reach where we will be drafting right now.

Drafting BPA > Need is my philosophy

We can also get Jason Shirly in the 4th...

- I am really high on B.J. Raji and hope he comes out this year.

How would you rank the DT's this draft. As far as the run stuffing cloggers?

Nick

In this order (Raji will be a first - 2nd rounder if he goes back to school next year.)

Frank Okam

Red Bryant

B.J. Raji

Nick Hayden

Jason Shirley

Frank Morton

James McClinton

I just saw this interesting trade offer on this website and was curious what you think...

9. Dallas deals Roy Williams and Bobby Carpenter to Denver for Tim Crowder, Selvin Young and their 08 1nd round pick. Dallas has some cap issues on the horizon with DeMarcus Ware, TO, Newman, Henry, etc all coming up within a year or so of each other. Roy is the most tradeable of these players, and they pick up a RB talent, along with a great 3-4 DE fit in Crowder. The Dallas fans will howl over this one, but its Roy or Ware or Newman-one has to go-take your pick.

I personally would love this trade. Getting Roy Williams upgrades the S position and getting Bobby Carpenter to play SLB AND we get their 1st round pick this year (which would be around the 25-31 area. All we are doing is giving up Crowder who was a 2nd RD last year (we can resign ekuban). Selvin Young was an UDFA and still hasnt proven he can stay healthy and get the tough yards. This is a steal IMO

That's a terrible trade for us. Roy Williams can't cover and can only bring down ball carriers by horse-collaring them. Bobby Carpenter has proven nothing. And we have to throw it a 1st rounder into the deal! Ridiculous. That guy must be a Cowboys fan.

I can see the Broncos trading with Dallas but it would look like this:

Dallas acquire Broncos 1st rd(12th pick).

Broncos acquire Dallas's 1st round (31st pick)

Broncos acquire Cleveland's 1st rd through Dallas (22nd pick).

The value is in favor of us by 180. That is if the season ended today. So we might package a couple later round picks or something. Dallas when trading with Cleveland thought they would be obtaining a high draft choice. Look for them to trade up for a big playmaker.

Realistically I can see us losing one of the two games, maybe even losing both! Which is disheartening, yet nice to know we get a higher draft pick.

On the other hand, there are several other teams there than look to be able to win some of those other games. Arizona could possibly win both their last few games, as well as Cincinnati even. Who knows!

Keep up the great analysis though nick! It has been enjoyable to see you keep up on the the latest info! lol! :D:salute:

I dont like the trade. but its probably a decent one. looks as though they hate the broncos.

44. Denver Broncos: Dwight Lowery Cb San Jose State. Chump is getting old quickly(how he made the pro bowl is beyond me) and Bly is getting inconsistent. Lowery needs some shaping, but has a knack for the ball.

If we win, how far can we fall?

Depends who wins and loses.

It is possible for us to fall down to #14 or #15 if all the teams that we would want to win, Lose. And we win.

If Cincy beats Miami. We lose. We go up one spot. That will give us 9th pick.

Steal?!?! The Cowboy's are the one's getting the steal. Roy William's is a horrible cover safety and he will want money. That's the worst thing the Bronco's could do. Not to mention give away a first rounder, and two young talents in Young and Crowder.

We are drafting at #11 or 12

Cincy is above us because of the win. Congrats on Broncos winning last game and going into off season on a positive note. We played against a Vikings team that was playing their A plus game. We did absolutly great at stopping the run but showed a huge weakness on our pass rush... except for Dumerville.

Winbourn has been really stepping up and with the depth of Webster and Gold. I will put OLB need below DT and Saftey. It should help out a lot if we are able to add a True NT. This draft is going to be very weak at any "True" Nose Tackle. With only Okam in the mix. There are some in later rounds but are to much of a risk and how important of a need it is for our team.

In addition the free agency is also very very light at DT.

Saftey is going to be the next biggest need for our deffense. Lynch has been a big liability in any coverage.

If we draft on Deffense look for the Broncos to select Okam with the 12th pick or Phillips if he drops. They might take a hard look at Conner from Penn State or Laurinaitis if declares and drops.

With Cincy in front of us now... It is huge. It basically means Clady and Ellis is not going to drop to us. Cincy has a big need at OT and DT. We are picking in front of Carolina which has the biggest need for a saftey BUT great safties normally will go in the top 10... Specially with a very weak Saftey draft.

Now if the Broncos go offense early look for them to pick up a OT, RB, or a WR. OT is by far the biggest need for us but because of the quality players in the first day at WR and RB... Do not put it past Shanny.

* -- Subject to playoffs
# -- Subject to coin flip

Priority of playoff clubs within a tied segment is based on their advancement in the playoffs, but they do not drop out of their tied segment unless they participate in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl champion will select 32nd and the runner-up 31st.

Atlanta, Kansas City, and Oakland had the same strength-of-schedule. Since Kansas City finished third in the AFC West and the Raiders fourth (the tie was broken on the basis of the Chiefs’ 3-11 record in common games while the Raiders were 2-12), the Raiders will draft ahead of the Chiefs. Atlanta and Oakland will flip a coin for the third position; if Atlanta wins, the Falcons will draft third, the Raiders fourth, and the Chiefs fifth. If the Raiders win the coin flip, they will draft third, and the Falcons and Chiefs will flip a coin to determine the fourth and fifth positions.

Though Buffalo and Denver had the same strength-of-schedule, their tie for the 11th and 12th positions was broken by the conference tiebreaker. Since the Broncos defeated the Bills in head-to-head competition, Buffalo is given priority in the draft order and will select in the 11th position, with Denver in the 12th position.

Though Chicago and Detroit had the same strength-of-schedule, their tie for the 14th and 15th positions was broken by the divisional tiebreaker. Since the Lions defeated the Bears twice in head-to-head competition, Chicago is given priority in the draft order and will select in the 14th position, with Detroit in the 15th position.

Since Cleveland is not in the playoffs, the Browns have priority in the draft ahead of playoff teams with the same record.

Clubs involved in two-club ties will alternate positions from round-to-round. In ties that involve three or more clubs, the club at the top of a tied segment in a given round will move to the bottom of the segment for the next round, while all other clubs in the segment move up one position. This rotation continues throughout the draft.

Thanks BroncosTX.

I kept the same on first post but I added what you put on there in reference to NFL.Com.

You would think...

- Kansas City picks before Oakland because conferance record even though division record is tied.

- Chicago picks before Detroit because of division record... even though conferance record is tied.

- Broncos have tie breaker because of division record... even though conferance record is tied.

I never heard of a tie breaker with head to head until last night.

I think trading down will be a lot more viable options. We have a lot of holes not one. Plus he will go in the top 5.

That would be very costly.

I think it would be a horrible move. Speicially with the quality OT's in this draft.

Maybe then we can trade Cutler for Tom Brady and then trade our crappy o-line for Hutchinson, Jones, Light, Mankins, and Birk. Then we can trade Gold and Webster for Briggs and Urlacher. Pick up Kerney... and maybe somehow get SD to give us Tomlinson for our 7th round draft pick... Sounds great to me!!! Let's do it!

Long would be great on our line, if we can get him. We may be just as well to pick up a good blocking fullback in the second or third round. I really want to see Owen Schmitt from West Virginia come to Denver. Our problems are on defense and we should keep that in mind, though Long would be worth the pick if he slips to 12. Another late round offensive player I want is Adrian Arrington. His stats were not huge, but he played stellar when it counted as a second WR in Michigan, 158 yds and 2 tds (two of his catches were spectacular one handers. He also blew by every coverage that they threw at him in the bowl game.

Defense needs attention. Our best linebacker is DJ Williams. I want to see him moved to the outside. We could draft Jo-Lonn Dunbar in the third round. He is smart, fast, intense, and a natural leader out of BC. I like Ellis (DT) and Rivers (OLB) out of USC as potential first round choices. THe first three rounds should go to defense if we do not get any big name free agents. We will need to spend an early pick on a safety to replace Lynch even if he comes back. We need a sixteen game guy.

The offensive line could be a focus on the second day of the draft. We already have some really good linemen and the college prospects are deep this year. Any first round free safeties out there? What about West Virginia?

Denver Broncos 2008 draft ( barring trades ):

rd1: A. Sedrick Ellis (DT), USC or B. Kenny Phillips (FS), Miami
rd2. A. If Kenny Phillips (FS), Miami is rd1 choice, then Frank Okam (DT), Texas if available, but that is unlikely, so B. choice should be Michael Oher (OT), Ole Miss
rd4a. Beau Bell (LB), UNLV
rd4b. Craig Steltz (SS), LSU
rd5a. Amarri Jackson (WR), S. Florida
rd5b. Jordon Dizon (LB), CU
rd7. Best OL available

If neither Sedrick Ellis or Frank Okam are taken, then the first person we sign in June needs to be the best DT available. We need to get our D-line in shape or we will never contend for anything.

I think the above plan gets us a stud on the defensive side of the ball, maybe a great OT, and then fills in several holes with quality players.

I think we need to package Javon and Domonique for a 3rd round pick just to get them out of Denver. Javon needs to go, period. Dominique is infuriating at times, and can easily be replaced by Paymah.

If we can get a 3rd round pick then we could add another high end o-lineman. Then my draft would likely yield a FS, OT, OL, LB, SS, WR, LB, and OL. Fill in a young DT free agent, and we would have an awesome young core of players with several holes filled in moving into next year.

We should not draft a WR or RB with pick #12, as that could easily spell BUST. Just ask Detroit how their 1st round WR picks have gone, not to mention Denver's.

it would be an awesome pickup if we could get jared allen from kc, or a julius peppers, or even a frustrated jason taylor out of miami, all three of these guys have passion that rod smith had been qouted as saying some players on this team lack...how bout javon walker and travis henry to minnesota for chester taylor and a late pick? as for the draft, early d. out of LSU would be nice, or desean Jackson out of cal for his added explosiveness at the return position. the sheer locker room presence of al wilson back in the orange and blue would be great!!!
we could also defenitely use a run stuffer that's actually in football shape(sorry sam adams) maybe somehow denver can pull something off there or maybe we will see marcus thomas stronger next season.

THis is just my idea while scouring the free agency list for need and players. COuld we work something out that sends Javon Walker (and possibly a DL) to Jacksonville for Spicer?

I have to say it again, I think we would be draft day heroes if we can get our hands on Adrian Arrington (WR) from Michigan. He won't go too early and he will be a superstar in the NFL.

Spicer is listed UFA. We don't need to trade for him. Jacksonville needs a WR. They are deep on the defensive line and a trade could free up our draft options.

THe more I look at it, I really hope that Kenny Phillips or Sedrick Ellis fall to the 12th pick. With the need of teams drafting before us, it could happen.

I have to say after some thought today on this subject I realize our biggest needs are Oline and Dline and there are a couple of good picks but not sure if they will be there at 12. My thought is what about another big time physical receiver to complement Brandon Marshall? Then O/Dline in the second and maybe a runningback/return man later on. We obviously don't have issues finding rb's. There are 3 stud big physical receivers and they have 2 of them being on the board by our pic. The kid out of Indiana and Sweed from Texas. All 3 are around 6'3-6'5 and 215-225lbs. If they turn out to be similar to Brandon Marshall we put Stokely back in the slot and run an offense pass attack similar to the Colts. If the line holds up long enough to throw downfield you do and you have 2 physical receivers that can't be tackled one on one. Then if we could get a good fast back similar to a Reggie Bush type to run screens out of the backfield you have physical receivers to block for extra yardage. I was looking at some mock drafts and there are several RB's that are fast and elusive that can catch out of the backfield that might be there in late second to third rounds of the draft. This would be our second pick. It would take pressure off our Oline and Jay wouldn't have to hold the ball long and we obviously have no problem with our Oline when it comes to rushing. The only issue would be Dline and Marcus Thomas is getting better, Crowder will get better and we can only hope that Jarvis Moss is healthy and plays like he did at Florida. The only other areas would be safety and what to do about LB. We could look in free agency for that area and draft young next year for those two. However there are a couple of good saftey prospects that should be around in the third round and it is possible we unload Javon Walker for some picks and get a third round to address the safety (I like Steltz out of LSU). He is very physical and similar to John Lynch. Not super fast but put in at SS and Abdullah at FS and Lynch will probably retire next year so we have a year to groom Steltz. Well, just some thoughts while we had no football action this weekend.

Just re-reading the OP.

Does San Diego really have no picks after their 1st round pick until the 5th round? Would appear they've traded their picks from Rounds 2-4 away.

Not that they're full of holes or anything, just thought it was very suprising to see. Still think they were silly not trading Michael Turner last year when he was a RFA.

Chiefs | Team to select fifth
Fri, 22 Feb 2008 07:29:19 -0800

The Sporting News reports after a complicated coin-flip process Friday, Feb. 22, at the NFL Scouting Combine, it was determined that the Kansas City Chiefs have the fifth overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Atlanta Falcons won the initial toss against the Oakland Raiders; had they lost, there would have been a second toss between the Falcons and Chiefs to determine who would pick fourth. All three teams finished with the same strength of schedule. However, the Raiders carried a tiebreaker against the Chiefs because they finished behind them with a worse record in games versus common opponents.

Sadly unlike the wideout department the halfbacks will not be anything great come the latter third round and on. Second day possibles would be Kalvin McRae from Ohio and possibly Calvin Dawson from Louisiana-Monroe. And even then none could be the caliber of the top five in this years draft. Whereas receivers, solid receivers will be their throughout: My steal of the draft is the wideout from Duquesne, Bruce Hocker at 6'4, 205lbs. a 4.44 forty and averaging 17 yards per catch he could be a steal in the second day.

another guy like that is Jordy Nelson. Big and fast and tough-good #2 receiver.

If we stay put at 12 we should take Desean Jackson. Theres plenty of tackles we can get later in the draft. Jackson can fill our wholes in the return game and as a number 2 receiver.

Trade our 12 for Philadelphia's 19, 49 picks.

19= Chris Williams, OT or Kenny Phillips S (one of them will be there)
42= Dan Connor ILB or Sam Baker, OT (one of them will be there)
49= Chris Johnson RB/KR (This is the guy I really want this draft)
108= Jonathan Goff, ILB or Mike McGlynn, OG
119= Oniel Cousins OT
139= Ahtyba Rubin DT
148= Peyton Hillis FB
183= Wesley Woodyard, S
220= Kenneth Moore WR/PR/KR
227= Marcel Reece WR/HB

Sleepy, I like your thinking on the draft essentials. O-Line, D-Line, Strong up the spine of the defense. Competition at LB. Take a tough SOB at LB or Safety if one is there. Stockpile the core.

As for taking a candyland WR with a high draft pick and getting line help in the late rounds, I guess you could get lucky. Is there a "can't miss" WR there at #12? And if we trade down, is there one at #19 or #22? I just see, from looking at a couple of (nameless) NFL teams, that the whole offense gets a whole lot better when the QB has 1-2 more seconds.

Chris Williams will most likely be gone at 19 because the teams picking behind us (Carolina, Chicago, Detroit) all have needs at OT. If we do trade down Id like to see us take Kentwan Balmer DT from UNC or Jerod Mayo LB UT. Im not a big Kenny Phillips fan. Ive seen him play in person a number of times and hes overrated. The only reason people compare him to E Reed and Sean Taylor is because he wears a Miami uniform.

So the Saints can take Dorsey before KC has a chance to...

Although KC still seems set on the idea of trading down, which would be really easy if Dorsey is there at 5. But if the Raiders do pass on McFadden, I wonder who will make a move to trade up on him...

McFadden won't fall to us, but even if he did, his off-field issues aren't worth the risk.

I'm finally convinced that we will go Clady if he is there, J. Stew if he is not. Would love to see Rashard Mendenhal in a Broncos jersey, but he might also be gone by 12. Either way, I'll be happy about OT or RB in the first.

True True Draft should be an official Holiday. Kind of like christmas you write your list check it twice. You hope you get all these presents but some times you get a big surprise. It also nice to see other peoples presents to. Then you can talk about your presents after getting them. When one persons present breaks, it is very funny to talk about. Like a present I got last year that broke in clarrett last time heard some one moved the present from a crack house before it caught on fire.

But seriously,

It is just exciting for me...

Rivers to Bengals. If no tackles come off the board soon think we'll trade back? I'd love to trade back, give up a 5 and pick up a 3.

Harvey was our best shot to get good value in a trade down, Albert may be the next best thing, but I'm guessing NE takes him.

Bengal guys do not look pleased.

Why would they look pleased? New Orleans moved up past them and outbid them to the Jets to get a DT who was their top guy (Sedrick Ellis) and now Jacksonville just swoop down out of nowhere to get their #2 guy DE Derrick Harvey. They desperately need help on their DL and apparently it was just a little too obvious, so teams that also wanted the same players knew they had to move up in front of the Bengals to get them.

Now they're essentially hosed. The top guys left on the board are OTs and CBs. They need DTs and DEs.

Now you know why Shanahan acts so paranoid around draft time and never even talked to his picks?

He was a 3rd round pick before the combine and Pro days. Who cares how he looks in the weight room if he doesnt play like a top pick.

Well, for the first time I can remember, we have the opportunity to actually see whom Shanahan has as his #1 preferred target in the draft.

We knew Dorsey and Ellis would be gone, so this draft has unfolded perfectly for the Broncos.

Do we go OT or RB? And which one?

We are going to see Shanahan's #1 guy on his board.

Oh, my lordy! Bills take CB Leodis McKelvin!

That means we're on the clock with:

1. Ryan Clady
2. Chris Williams
3. Branden Albert
4. Rashard Mendenhall
5. Jon Stewart

Shanahan gets his choice of them all! He could trade back to #17 and still get a very good player! :coffee:

In 4-5 years we will know if we made the right choice but for the short term we made the SMARTEST choice we could have made. People talk about bust potential but Mendenhall and Jackson have just as much bust potential especially Jackson.

Well, its not rare knowledge to know that Clady doesnt have a mean streak, and the fact that he is like 6'7" BUT lean and not built makes the pressence that he is soft.

As I said, not a bad pick, but i think Albert OR Williams woulda been better.

At least Jackson and Mendenhall did it on the big stage against top talent.

Remind me exactly what they did:confused: Mendenhall so far quite possibly could be a one year wonder i.e. Cedric Benson and in college you don't need to be big and fast to put up decent #s at WR. You just need to be fast. Jackson at 169 lbs is WAY too small to be selected at 12. I say late 1st round flyer or 2nd for Jackson.

As far as Chris Williams is concerned for those disappointed we didn't draft him.......he is much better at pass blocking than he is at run blocking and we needed a big prototype run blocking LT.
