Denver's one year Super Bowl Plan
Free Agency
Denver only signs a couple of free agents as they spend a lot of their money on the draft and extending their own players:
* Karlos Dansby, LB-His signing alone makes this a very good unit again.
* Justin Smiley, OG-He fits this system well and allows Myers to back up Nalen at center (assuming Hamilton doesn't come back).
* Sam Brandon, S-He's recovered so Shanahan brings him back
Roster Moves
* Matt Lepsis already freed up some money by retiring.
* Ian Gold is cut loose after being given the option of being a back-up at a reduced salary. Frees up more money.
* Although I'm rooting for him, Hamilton decides the concussions were too much and hangs it up. This saves more money.
* Javon Walker, after his agent explores his value, re-works his contract and comes back to be part of a formidable receiving corps. He realizes that the grass is not greener on the other side.
* Travis Henry remembers his first two games this year, and also how Shanahan stuck by him, and re-works his contract to save money under the cap.
* Stephen Alexander retires.
* Ebenezer Ekuban is not brought back.
* Rod Smith retires.
* Nick Ferguson is let loose.
Trades
Denver makes a trade prior to the draft and a few more during the draft to garner more picks:
* Dominique Foxworth (3rd round value) and their 5th to Detroit for Shaun Rogers. Detroit wants him out and he's worth the risk. Regardless of the system, Rogers is going to help our run defense and create pressure up the middle.
* 4th rounder from Washington to Minnesota for Erasmus James. Not a big need, but a lot of insurance at DE for a guy that has underachieved and been hurt. Minnesota gives up on him and Shanahan likes former 1st rounders.
* Denver trades the 12th pick to Dallas for both of Dallas' 1st round picks, the 22nd & 31st. Dallas wants Kenny Phillips and is willing to give up both 1st to get him.
* Denver drops again because Keith Rivers didn't fall and swaps their first 1st from Dallas, the 22nd, with San Francisco for the 30th & 40th pick. San Francisco wants Malcolm Kelly and doesn't want to risk losing him.
* Denver trades the 40th pick to Atlanta for the 49th & 70th. Atlanta didn't take a QB with their first two picks, but leapfrogs a bunch of teams to get Brian Brohm.
Denver, at the end of the day, is armed with the 30, 31, 43, 49, 70, 105, 131, 200 and 212.
Draft
1st-Dan Connor, LB They didn't get Rivers, but get the next best thing when Connor unexpectedly drops to them.
1st-Sam Baker, OT Him and Ryan Harris will fight it out at left tackle. Baker is seasoned and battle tested.
2nd-James Hardy, WR They can't believe he's still there, although he's going to take a year or two to develop. Awesome potential!
2nd-Franklin Okam, DT I love this guy. He's going to be a better pro than he was in college. Will back up Rogers and Thomas in the middle.
3rd-Reggie Smith, S They looked at him in the second round and still get him. Can play safety or corner.
4th-Terrence Wheatley, CB If healthy he could compete for the nickel job within a year or two.
5th-Peyton Hillis, FB Denver takes a flier on this kid, who blocked for McFadden and is also good out of the backfield.
7th-Jordan Dixon, LB He drops because of size/speed questions, but he gets a look on the practice squad for a year.
7th-Kory Lichtensteiger, C Another future center candidate for when Nalen retires.
