12 Broncos OT Chris Williams Vanderbilt Sr. 6-5 318
With the retirement of Matt Lepsis, finding a replacement at offensive tackle rises to the top of the Broncos' need list. If Clady is gone, Denver could easily shift its focus to Williams, who has great size and NFL-ready footwork.
Okay draftniks, what's the story with this Vandy player? Is Banks only sending him to the Broncos because we have Cutler or what?
Could we draft Williams in the first and Earl Bennett in the second like some have suggested? The new Vanderbilt connection? :D

That would just be crazy.
Not because I don't like it... just because it's crazy. lol.
I think I read before that Cutler's the only Vanderbilt player we've ever drafted. So this would be an interesting twist. I'm not against picking players that Cutler likes... but that would just seem too much.
Has any other mock ever had Williams going this high?

We could do a lot worse than Williams and Bennett with 1 & 2.
But that would only be good if we have picked up a DT in free agency.

His stock raised after Senior Bowl week. It really depends on how teams view him after the combine. I think that there is a possablity that we could see quit a few o-linmen go in the 1st, its just the way that the talent has gone this year. First time I have seen him at 12 but I have seen him from 14 up so 12 does not seem like that much of a reach.

Well, I guess *somebody* has not read my epic thread on this topic!
Chris Williams is my projected Bronco pick, and you can get a ton of explanations, theories, and analysis on him as well as Bronco needs by reading through the 10 or so pages here:

Chris Williams is beast. IIRC, it was said that he allowed 0 sacks this past season. That's just incredible considering Vandy plays in the SEC. I would not mind getting Chris Williams in the first with our 12th overall pick, even if Ryan Clady is still on the board.

Chris Williams saw his stock soar during Sr-Bowl week... He's projected to be a mid first round... unlikely to fall into the 20s... SO, if DEN wants a OT... Clady and Williams make the most sense (Willaims is more NFL-ready).
I would say... Since Shanny loves the SEC... Williams is a top choice on BRONCO BOARD.
BUT... I see DEN grabbing a LB in the 2nd... Lofton, Goff, Henderson, Highsmith, Mayo, Wheeler... There are just too many to pass (and since there are a lot... a few will be there come our 2nd pick).
Unless Ellis falls to us in the first... I see DEN grabbing a RB/OT in the first and a LB in the second. MOst likely, DEN will find a way to add another Day One pick and grab all three: RB-OT-LB.
They will address DT in free agency and also add another body in the 4th round... They will also address S in the 4th...
DEN might try to get a WR in the 4th as well (if they don't find a way to move into the 3rd).
NOW... imagine if DEN drafts Chris Williams, Earl Bennett and Goff... THREE Vandy players...

Chris Williams is probably the best pure LT in the draft. He is not the mauler type you want for RT, but his footwork is sublime, he is incredibly fast and can keep any type of pass rusher away from his QB. He had a strong senior bowl and had some infights with Red Bryant which partly put to rest the notion that he was a bit too nice and not willing to get his hands dirty.
The only knock on him I see is that he is not a great run blocker, he did have a 122 knockdowns but I would like to see him just plain humiliate his opponent a little more. He has the tools, he just needs to eat the defender alive when he has the chance.
I still think that drafting an OT in the 1st is suboptimal, we really do need depth at OT, but we are going to go after somebody in FA anyway (not Wharton apparently he just resigned), but we need a backup. So if we have 2 starters and a backup when the draft rolls around it seems excessive to draft another OT in round 1. But in many mocks we really end up having to draft an OT to get any kind of value for our pick.

I'm liking the idea of taking this kid more and more everyday. According to nfldraftscout he only gave up one sack this season. That is huge-time impressive. He is just the kind of player we need protecting Cutler and opening running lanes. Who knows, maybe he becomes our own Joe Thomas.

Williams is a reach at #12 no matter how you look at it, so you better be right on him, or once again, Shanahan will look like he has no idea of how to manage a Draft.
Part of Mastering the craft is to have a good feel of where players should go and where you can get 'em...last year, the Broncos looked like novices at this Draft stuff by trading up to get Jarvis Moss when they had other players available at similar value where they were selecting, and looked desparate in trading up.
If the Broncos want Williams, they should be able to trade down to the #17 area and still get him, and add a pick in the process....that, I could live with...but NOT at #12...unless, like I say, he is VERY good.
I still say, 1) Stewart, 2) Mendenhall, 3) Clady, 4) Phillips or 5) Derrick Harvey...all would make sense to me, and I would be happy with any of them.

I would rather have LB Curtis Lofton from OU than Earl Bennett though, he's a beast of a MLB. He reminds me of DeMeco Ryans. I believe we could trade up into the third and get Bennett anyway. This is assuming we don't go LB in round 1 though.

Give me Williams in the first. One of the second tier DT in the second. a fourth round RB and WR. P and FB in the fifth and if we can squeeze a 3rd id like a S
LB i think we can fill in FA
I hope we can get atleast one DT in FA or we may have to double dip at DT in the draft. yes its that bad

I hope not. People apparently forget Vanderbilt wasn't a very good team. Getting a bunch of Vanderbilt players would be like getting the Cleveland Brown defensive line coach and all of his linemen and expecting them to suddenly become winners in Denver. Oh wait a minute... Shanahan did that.

Mindfield is right....Williams is a reach at 12, which makes this idea more logical in Shanahans illogical crazy, sometimes brilliant, mind. I see the Broncos moving up to draft him at around 8-9.

Ok, I am biased more towards the Vandy players but with that said. I want the best player for our Broncos Vandy player or not.
I have been watching Clady and the reports I have read and heard was he is not that strong? That he will need to work out more.
I have been watching Chris Williams and he looked like a man against boys at the senior bowl.
This however could all change with the combine next week. I want to see one on one drills.
Then lets see.
Thanks
