PFT rumormill: Robertson deal falls through
For the second time since Friday, a deal that the Bengals thought they'd make to upgrade a subpar defense has fallen apart.
Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that the trade between the Jets and the Bengals for New York defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson is off.
The sticking point was Cincy's insistence that Robertson re-do a contract that is set to pay him $9.8 million in 2008. Unless and until the Jets find a team for whom Robertson is willing to take a haircut, the likelihood is that Robertson eventually will be cut before a $3 million roster bonus comes due in June.

YES!
A deal that would've sent Jets DT Dewayne Robertson to the Bengals in exchange for fourth- and fifth-round picks has reportedly been called off.
It's the second deal for a big interior tackle Cincinnati has missed out on. It's believed the trade hinged on Robertson agreeing to a long-term contract with the Bengals. The Jets will likely continue to shop the 26-year-old.

Wait wait..... no. Did you read that? He's not willing to renegotiate out of the current contract he has. Which means he wants to keep the contract that will count 9.8 MILLLION against the cap. So Noooooooooooooo.
Robertson wants to hit the open Free Agency market. He wants to pick his team and on his terms, and I can't say I don't blame him. Right now, he's holding all the cards.
So No. Lets not trade for this guy.

Agreed...lol. The only shot he has of coming here is to sign a new deal, he is constantly one of the top defenders in stats, but still...no one should pay his arse nine million if they do not even know how he will transist with the team and scheme.

??? A potential pro-bowl 26 yr-old DT... aint worth the money... especially when we need a DT? OH... OK! SURE... let's go with Kenny Peterson.
ANYWAY... maybe he didn't like Cincy... Maybe he'll work out a deal here... IF NOT, then a trade to DEN could be called off... SO, why not take a shot... see if he'll restructure?

Cincinatti was unwilling to redo his deal. Yes he has a 10 million dollar cap number. But that money COULD have been given to him in bonus money that would not count directly against the cap this season. Bengals probably approached him about taking a pay cut and that was not happening. Broncos can rework his deal and give him that 10 million today.
Meaning that he gets a new deal that is more cap friendly to us and more wallet friendly to him.

How is he a potential pro bowler? he is as close to a bust as you come without being one outright. If he is a potential pro bowler then I the same can be said for every player in the league.
I don't think that anybody should get their hopes up on grabbing Robertson. Yes, it would definitely be nice to have his services but don't you think that if Shany really wanted this kid he would have outbid the Bengals in the first place? Just a thought :coffee:

Almost 9 mil against the cap to sign this guy.........unless he's Reggie White reincarnated he is not worth that much money!!!
P.S. Yes I know Reggie White was a DE not a DT but just saying he would need to be the same caliber player as White was to be worth that much money

FOLKS...
Moss-Thomas-Robertson-Crowder could be the DL of the future! All young with loads of potential... Throw Elvis in there... Sprinlkle in Peterson and Mallard, along w/ Ekuban & Engelberger... We would be SET this year.
THUS, we could focus on other needs in the draft. Grab a RB/WR and a LB... That would be nice Day One picks...
We could work something out... be creative. This guy would be a stud... just what we need!

This guy was very good in the 4-3... At worst he would be a solid starter... AT BEST, he would be that disruptive force up the middle... Allowing ends to rush from the outside... Freeing up Thomas... Putting pressure on QBs...
Guy would be perfect... With the talent we have on defense... This guy would make a difference... he would stand out.

Do you not think that the people IN THE BUSINESS of doing NFL contracts thought of the suggests you just brought up, or do you think they only play Madden football and you guys are thinking ABOVE their thought process??????
ROBERTSON is holding the cards here guys. He knows that if he doesn't renegotiate, the Jets will HAVE to cut him, and they will. Thus, he will be able to play the FA market with NOOOOO strings holding him. He can sign where he wants.

I'm struggling with this guy. At some point we will have to pay a DT top dollar, because we want a guy that puts up this guy's stats and effort. He's also a top off-field guy and locker room guy. And he's entering his prime.
I think he's going to be worth whatever he receives, it just comes down to if the team can afford him.
I think the Jets are getting desperate now. The draft choice compensation should drop to a single 5th rounder now at best. If Denver can spread the hit and get Robertson to renegotiate, which doesn't appear likely, then they should try and make a deal.
There's no other player in Free Agency that would help improve this team more on a consistent basis for multiple years.
Well. He may just not want to play for the Bengals (which would be totally understandable). I hope it's that rather than him being greedy...I've heard he's a high character guy. But maybe it is that simple.
Either way it's great news, I think we should make a concerted effort to get him. Although the contract will be a limitation. Shanny will be desperate to cover his own back in contract talks (if we get that far...) which kind of sends out the "I don't really trust you" vibes. I don't blame him by any means but it's a tough situation. Robertson - if what I've read is true in that he's usually pretty cooperative - should be far less risky than giving Gardener/Warren large contracts but you can never be sure.
That said if we do pick him up it'll ease pressure on the draft - although I'd still want to see us take a DT in the 2nd round or thereabouts.

Not if he's not willing to renegotiate... and he is NOT WORTH 10 million a year. DO you really think that you guys are coming up with contract ideas that the Bengals don't know or haven't thought about?? Seriously???
There is a REASON Denver pulled out of the trade talks with him to begin with.. THIS is why. He's unwilling to renegotiate his current contract. Why should he? He's holding all the cards. He can pick where he wants to go after he hits the market as a complete UFA.

AND SHANNY WAS WILLING to cut Javon for nothing and taking a 9 million cap hit this year..
All I'm saying is... the guy would be a good fit.
NOW... we have to spend a Day One pick on a DT... who wont do much for 1-3 years.... Will probably be a bust.
So much talent this year... WR/RB/OT/LB... This is where you want to guy in the first 2 rounds.
AGAIN... there are ways to fiddle w/ the cap hit.
I doubt DEN would do it... Still, doesn't mean it would be a bad move.
We just gave 2.5 a year to a ST player (NIKO) and a possible #3 WR (Colbert)...

I think thats what he wants more than anything else. Obviously the money will have to be there as well, but its going to have to be a combination of money and the team's chances.

He said Day 1.
He is probably supposing that Ellis and Dorsey will be gone so the Broncos will take a guy in rounds 2-3 who may very likely be a bust over a veteran player who is 26 years old who has not reached his full potential and has played pretty well in a 3-4 defense when he is built for a 4-3.

I realize you're having difficulty understanding my point b/c you're fixated on this 10-mill a year figure. AGAIN... let me repeat myself... DEN's capologists could work something out... Transfer money to a signing bonus... whatnot... OWNERS already saying they are opting out of the CBA... Most likely a CAP-FREE year is coming in 2009-2010.
Point is... we could get that cap figure down... this year and next year... and so on... We could work something out... Take a lesser blow to the cap, while still giving him his money.

THAT certainly is true. BUT... with only 2 picks before round 4... AND... with newfound focus to rebuild through the draft... I doubt we trade up...
STIll... wouldn't put anything past SHANNY.
MAYBE DORSEY slips... but Cincy will grab a DT now that they cannot get any in a trade... LOL!
I realize Dewayne is a HUGE gamble... BUT... he's shown he has the ability, he's a good character guy, he's young... I feel he would be perfect fit for our D-line... Mainly b/c he is young (like the ones we have) but also has experience (what we have lack right now)... If we draft a DT... It will help... but... lots of growing pains ahead for this group.
With Robertson, Elvis, Moss, Crowder, Thomas and Harris... That's a nice core to compliment the young foundation we have on offense. AND, if we grab a Day One LB to add with DJ... we have a solid front 7 in our future.

We have a shot at neither of them, especially Ellis...and Dorsey, even if he fell, I think we would pass on him, just because his health concerns and because he is not a traditional nose which we obviously are looking for. Sims may not even fit that role - top three nose tackles in this years draft are Bryant, Rubin and Harrison...then followed by Okam, Morton and Shirley. If we go with a quasi-nose I think Balmer may fit that role, but Sims and Murray would be for sure on the list then.

But you are ignoring the fact that Denver pulled out of the trade talks for a reason. That reason most probably was the realization that Robertson is unwilling to renegotiate his contract... period.
Do you honestly feel that the Bengals don't have a knowledge of the contracts and cap space? You think that you can figure something else out that the Bengals couldn't or didn't try?
The Broncos pulled out of the talks, and it took about one day for the Bengals to figure out that Robertson wasn't going to renegotiate. Whats that tell you? I know it tells me that he's not willing to renegotiate.... period.

Check out this Report:
According to a source close to the Bengals, Cincinnati called off the trade because of concerns about Robertson's problematic left knee.
Remember in 2005, Robertson was having problems with the knee, and Herman Edwards shut him down for the season in December.
Well at the time, Edwards said that Robertson had "bone-on-bone" in the knee.
That can be a career-ending condition. Just ask Curtis Martin.
Well according to the Bengal source, after D-Rob took a physical, the team didn't like the reports they were given on the left knee. So the deal was called off.
The irony of this story is that Robertson played the last two years on that knee without missing a game.
But Robertson's left knee condition could make it hard for the Jets to get market value for D-Rob.

The Bengals reportedly may have backed out of their proposed trade for Jets DT Dewayne Robertson due to a bone-on-bone condition in his knee.
The Bengals may have balked at giving him a long-term deal because of the knee. Robertson recently also had hand surgery, but that was a non-issue.
