Just read on Rotoworld that the 49ers have agreed to a 1 year deal with Bryant Johnson, making Ashley Lelie expendable, according to the article.
I say if he is cut we should definately go out and sign him to a 1 year incentive based deal. Most people will laugh at this but he knows the offense, still runs inthe 4.3's and would be a nice compliment to Marshall, a badly needed deep threat that we need stretching the field.
We need someone else besides Keary Colbert let's be honest here, and I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a WR in the 1st unless we trade down like 10 spots!!!
Sorry I do not know how to post links or I would do so!!!

I'm not sure he would be willing to come back here with Shanahan still as the head coach. I wouldn't mind if Lelie came back, but his pride would not let him comeback. Especailly not with Marshall in the wings as the guarnteed #1 WR. Something Lelie could have done if he had fought for it the same way Marshall did.

The only way I could see us signing Lelie.. is to sign him to a 1 day contract... ask him about how his "#1" receiver abilities that "worked" on 2 other teams, and then cut him.

Please no Lelie. He is such a whiny prima donna. The only things he can do are run fast and avoid the middle of the field like its infected with bubonic plague. I would rather have Martinez line up as the number 2.

I'm sure Lelie is not going to be a #1 anywhere, and I'm sure his agent knows it too. I would love to see him come back as a #2 guy. We need someone who can stetch the field for Cutlers arm and he already knows the system, so he won't take a year or two to develope.
The way I see it, if we get Lelie then our WRs are set for the next two years so we won't have to get one early in the draft. Instead we can use a 4th or 5th rounder on a guy who can develope or be used as a immediate returner.
This would allow us to focus on the O-line and D-line in the draft since WR, S, and LB would all be satisfied.
If this could happen I see us getting Ryan Clady or Chris Williams in the first round. And we get the best DT in the second (Pat Simms from Auburn or Trevor Laws from Notre Dame). And we could get Frank Okam from Texas in the 4th (even though he showed as a fatass, I've watched him at Texas his whole career and he would be a steal).
Please Shanny do this.

I agree that he wants to be a #1, but he WILL NOT be a #1 anywhere right now. If he can fight to be a very good #2 or even a #1B type guy he'll still make some money and be productive. If he can't give me that then I'm not signing him for any price.

That's the thing. No way Lelie is going to be happy competing for less than a #1 spot. That's what led to his departure in the first place. Do you think his attitude is honestly any different now?

Dude was the 4th or 5th option for the last 2 years. Im sure he would welcome being the 2nd option. He was solid and is EXACTLY what we need right now. This allows us to have essentially a free pick in the draft. Lelie is a great compliment to what we already have in Marshall and Stokely. If he is available mike has got to make that call. He should have never left.

yes 100%. I personally like Lelie. he knows he's not going to be a #1 anywhere. someone said the rams and jets... the rams have torry holt and the jets have laverneus coles. there's no way Lelie would beat out either of those two guys.

Hmmm...I'm actually torn on this one.
Ok first of all if Lelie were to come back he would NOT be competing for the #1 WR job. He would compete for 2,3,4, or even 5. I think he could be an asset to the team in a reserve roll (this is assuming he actually wants to come back and that he could accept the role we give him).
Lelie has talent...I believe some referred to him as a practice god when he was here. His problem has always been with consistency and actually displaying his talent in a game rather than just doing it in practice.
So if we can get him relatively cheap and let him compete for a job who knows maybe he will surprise us. That being said if we did not sign him or give him a second thought I know I would not loose sleep over it.
Anyway here is to a good St. Patty's day weekend, everyone have a green beer and remember to be safe! Cop out in full force looking for DUI's this weekend...
Thx,
Joe

If he gets it threw his thick skull that Marshalls the man. Then cool, if not let him go to Oaland to fight with Javon. Two prima donnas and a crappy team that should sell tickets, just to cover Tommie Kellys and Javon Walkers pay checks.:D

I'd take Lelie over Martinez for sure and probably Colbert as well. I think he's an ideal #2. He's not coming here though. He will not want to come crawling back to the team that wronged him (or so he perceives).

Lelie's problem the first time here is he had a QB named Jake Plummer. The guy could stretch the field and get open. Plummer could NEVER hit him in stride! Lelie always had to make a huge adjustment to catch the ball.
With Jay throwing the ball, I think Lelie would do better here a second go round. I definitely do not like the way he left town but it is a business and none of that should matter.
What does matter is Shanny WILL NEVER bring the guy back. Shanny has shown he cannot handle the primadonna players. He ships em out by trade or cuts him and they dont come back. Who has left Denver under Shanny only to return? One person: Shannon Sharpe and Lelie aint no Shannon Sharpe.

here are some positive and negative qualities about ashley lelie
+ good speed. he can open up the field for cutler's arm and be the deep threat we are missing.
+ he knows the system
+ he already proven himself and takes no time to develope
- want to be the #1 guy. this really isnt as big of a problem as people think. he's been warming the bench for atlanta and san fran for the last couple of years. i personally think he would be happy to get back on the field. he is going to find out that hes not a #1 anywhere.
- some don't think he's a good player. i think he's definitely a better #2 than glenn martinez or keary colbert. and the last time he was on a decent team he had plummer throwing to him. cutler is a lot better than plummer so we know that his production will rise.
if he comes cheap i really can't think of anything bad about signing him

Yes, his attitude has changed tremendously. He hasn't been a starter for the past 2 years; I'm positive he would be more than ecstatic to have the oppurtunity to battle for the No. 2 receiver spot. If we sign him it'll be cheap and he may actually let us get rid of Keary Colbert so we don't have to pay him as much and we get a cheaper better version of Colbert.
When he came out everybody thought he would be great if he could be consistent enough catching routine catches and he can still be great. It's not like Shannahan gave up on him just because he let him go. He knew that he would burn out as soon as he figured he wouldn't be a No. 1 in the league for awhile. He knows that he can come back and give us production like his last year here and then we have a great combination of speed and power at the receiver position.

NO Way....I would sign Lelie to pick up trash in the stands after the game. Screw Him!!! Give Colbert a shot, I saw him a lot in College. I was a really nice reciever. Even his rookie years he played well. The past few years though he hasn't had the best QB throwing to him. I think that he COULD really do well, if not just release him. What other option did we have??? Way over pay for Porter, or Bryant?

He couldn't even start for Atlanta (who has no recievers) or San Fransisco (who has no recievers) so I really don't think his ego will be an issue anymore.
I don't see any reason why we shouldn't bring him in on a 1 year, incentive based deal and let him battle for the number 2 spot.
Or hey I gotta better idea, why don't we go 5 wide with Marshall, Stokley, Colbert, Martinez, and Jacobs, are you F-ing kidding me???

I really don't think that Lelie will ever be a Bronco again.
The main reason why I think this, is that he got over on the Broncos and especially Mike Shanahan.
Remember, he and the Broncos had a dispute over signing bonus money due to him holding out.......and Lelie won!
Do you think Shanny liked that?
Do you think Shanny has forgotten that?
-Not too likely......I think that it would take a large amount of grovelling by Ashley, which I also believe is not too likely.

Lelie wasn't cut, Jackson was.
But anybody, Lelie included, who thinks Lelie could be a #1 on any team, needs to have their thoughts checked out.
I mean, he is on the worst team in the NFL (WR talent wise) and he is struggling to get action as the team's #3.
I'm not so sure he can beat out our current #2 (Kerry Colbert, Glenn Martinez, Brandon Stokely, and future rookie WR).
If his prissy pants ways were over, and he just wanted to go to a better situation, and he promised to keep his mouth shut, and just asked Shanahan if he could compete for the #2 (because we all know Shanahan going to try and keep Stokley at #3), I'd be okay with this. But, what else is he going to do besides stretch the field?

My point exactly. Sure, he may be fast still, but if he was a viable #2 candidate, why hasn't he been able to crack into that position at either team he has played for since he left Denver?
Even if he could provide stiff competition for #2 in Denver (which I doubt), why would Shanny and the organization want his attitude in the locker room?

I'm one of the few people that loved Ashley while he was here and still like him as a player. If y'all forgot what he brought to this offense check out this highlight reel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QZahza2uGA) I made for his 2005 year. I understand the hate for him now but he was a good player when he was with us and people seem to forget that.
We need a burner and he would be a great fit, Lelie and Cutler would be a downright scary combo. Personally I would welcome him back with open arms. It's too bad he burned the bridges.

As long as there is teams as desperate as Philli and TB, Lelie will not have to worry about swallowing his pride and returning to Denver.
But, assuming Denver does nothing else at WR, I'd take Lelie back in a NY minute, he's twice the player Colbert is......

I don't get it. Lelie was like 4th string for the 49ers-worst offense in the league. He is not a #1 anywhere. Besides, there is too much bad blood between he and the Broncos. He has poor work habits, no guts, and an overated self opinion.

I seem to remember thinking Lelie was too scared to go across the middle. That's tough for someone who might be considered a #2. We don't need more selfish pride on this team anyways - we just got rid of that with "Gimpy leg - I need a Walker".
