In my mind, this draft should come easy this year for our Broncs. Why do you ask? Well, for this particular draft our strategy should ONLY be on BPA (best player available). I think it is obvious that we have many needs for our team this year regardless of position. Now there are a few positions where we are solid (QB, TE, DE) thats it! Other than that, depending on how Shanny and co. rate out each player, we should definitely take the BPA approach regarding our draft. There is really no position where we need to reach for anyone unless the BPA is one of those positions where we feel we are solid, which in my mind we only have three...What do you think?:smug:

yeah, it's easy: dominant LT (or 2), a couple fast and crafty WRs, decent run-stuffing DT, bruising nasty FB/H-back, dangerous kick returner, kicker and/or punter. to me, at least!

I just wish we had a third....

I would say that our immediate needs would be both O-Line and D-Line, a WR/PR, Kicker and Punter!

We shouldn't have to reach on anyone, we should address the Trenches early and often and add a WR/PR on day 2 as well as a kicker and maybe a Punter!

I wish we could move down a few spots and gain a 3rd rounder, this would give us 10 picks, let us keep Foxy, and give us some manueverability on day 2!

Either way if we come out with 2 O-Lineman, 2 D-Lineman, a good WR/PR, and a good young kicker I will be thrilled. That leaves Shanny 3 picks to screw up, I will allow that I guess!

While BPA sounds like a good approach in theory, it really isn't practical. What do you do if the BPA at each of your first three picks is a WR. Which of those do you plan to use on the WR? Say you go with the simplest approach and pick WR with your first pick since he is the BPA. Then with your second pick, you look to pick someone other than WR since you already picked one. You have already broken the BPA philosophy. Let's say then that the second best player available is a DE, which we don't need. The third best player is another WR. Assuming you can get the next guy on your board, say he happens to be a safety. Now your strategy has transformed into BOFBPA (Best or fourth-best player available). With your third pick, if the second-best player is now a safety, third-best is a QB, fourth-best is a TE, fifth is a another safety, what do you do?

You might decide to modify your strategy to get the best GROUP of players available (meaning that all your draft picks represent the best combination of talent available at spots other than QB, TE, and DE). That then introduces concerns of who is going to be available where. Add another layer of complexity to this now - throw in the fact that next year's draft is extremely rich in linebackers and safeties. If you end up picking LB and S with your first two picks this year, and end up doing the same the next year, you have a very good defensive back 7, but the rest of your team hasn't really experienced the optimal infusion of talent.

Final layer of complexity (at least for now) - some positions on the team are more important than others. LT is more important than FB, DT is more important than SLB. It kinda defeats the purpose to have a first-round SLB (which, shockingly, DJ Williams was for us at one point, but that was marginally acceptable then because the rest of our team was set; I say marginally because think for a moment how much more pressure we would have had from the defensive line if we had picked Vince Wilfork instead of DJ Williams; a defensive line with Wilfork could have gotten us to the Superbowl in 2005), second-round FB, and fourth-round LT and DT. Not only are you weaker in key positions, you are leaving better players at those positions on the board for other teams to get better with.

So, I don't think this draft is easy. IMO, drafts are easiest when you have the fewest holes and get progressively harder as the number of needs on your team increases.
