First of all this disclaimer right off the bat: This is NOT!!! a slam on the NY Yankees, or their fans, or Steinbrenner.
My question to you is this, Why is it that George, Girardi, a lot of their fans, and a lot of their players, think that they are IMMUNE to losing, missing the playoffs, controversy, ect.???
After last nights game, it was reported that manager Joe ripped into his team. OK. He has every right to, but is it going to help?
So they have the biggest payroll in organized professional sports, so they have a lot of future hall of famers, so the have won dozens of titles, EVERY THING COMES TO AN END EVENTUALLY!!
I am a BIG Braves fan, and to a cerain degree, a person can get spoile, acclimated, and EXPECT to win the division, 100 games, and World Seris EVERY YEAR! But it aint gonna happen! To me they seem to expect it! Like it is their birthright! I am a Nebraskan and lifelong Cornhusker, and believe me, I know ALL ABOUT out of whack expectations, and being spoiled, Nothing a coulple of losing seasons and missing BOWL GAMES cannot cure though!!!:D
My final question is this, to all Yankee and Red Sox fans, whom I am also a fan of. What in the HELL will these two teams do, if the freaking RAYS win the division, and the Sox and Yanks dont even make the PLAYOFFS!!!! It can VERY WELL HAPPEN ya know!!! I sort of wish it does, in a SICK TWISTED SADISTIC way, just to hear and see the NUCLEAR MELTDOWN EVERYWHERE!! That would be cool, HEHEH!

I suppose a lot of the younger fans have never seen the Yankees miss the playoffs.
I've been around a lot longer. I've seen them miss the playoffs many times. No team is immune to missing the playoffs. Anyone telling you differently doesn't know the game.
If the Yankees miss the playoffs, I'll continue to closely follow them and their 6 minor league teams. I'll watch all 162 Yankees games and watch/listen to a lot of their minor league games. Today for example, I'm getting ready to watch the Yankees/red sox, then I'll watch the Yankees AAA game at 6 PM.
I'm not going to change, win, lose, or draw. I've watched them win 6 World Series titles. If there are more, great.... if not, I've already been spoiled.

Simple answer: the more you win, the more you're SUPPOSED to win.

You both put it out there very plain and simple why we are fans, but it just seems to me that expectations nowadays are bigtime unrealistic.

Correct.They are.
Those expectations throw common sense out the window. I'd like to think I still have common sense.
It's ridiculous to expect a team to make the playoffs or win it all every season. Last repeat champions: 1998/1999/2000. If it were easy, someone would have won 3 straight since then, or at leat won back-to-back.
The playoff runs by the Braves and Yankees are the exception, not the rule. Insane playoff runs by both teams.

In hockey the Avs had a great playoff run.

Hell, in 1999 I just KNEW the Broncos were going to be the first team to threepeat, even without Elway, I figured Brister filled in for him in 98, and didn't lose a game, and he had a better Rating then Elway had!!! Plus, every other starter was returning, there was just NO WAY they couldnt repeat. WELL, first Sharpe goes down, Davis goes down, and we all know how Bubby performed when he was supposed to be the MAN!!
One 6-10 record later, and My EXPECTATIONS came back to earth !!!

Wow, I did not realize that today was Willie's birthday! Only truly awesome people were born on July 6! :smug: [Edit: I can think of one OBVIOUS exception...]
I like Willie and I think he kinda got the shaft. Hopefully he catches on somewhere else.
