Nice victory for Wales over Australia this weekend which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Congrats NZ on the Gran Slam (although the important one belongs to Wales)
COngrats Ireland on beating Romania rugby powerhouses.
The scots gave the kiwis a good run for their money, especially in the second half.

I would have been very interested to see a New Zealand vs France game... Though I think All Blacks would have been the fav, we often plays great games against them...
Nice thread Karaibro !

Only five Kiwis too, I'm sure that won't be enough for Kap!
Leave no 10 alone Alan, Humphreys isn't as cute as Carter! :P

the thing most at risk in your mouth is your tounge
was one playing a game where a guy not wearing his gum shield got it in his chin and the top of his tounge got severed by his to sets of teeth coming together :(

Lol, did you notice the word Brawn across his chest. That must have been a pic from the game v France if I remember correctly. For all other games in the 6 nations they had Brains across their jerseys but as the advertising of beer is prohibited in France the sponsors name could not be displayed and it was changed to brawn!
So there ya are, the Welsh team, the only complete team out there - with brains and brawn!

A lot of the All Blacks have degrees, and Joshie Kronfeld has a masters in Teaching and is a primary school teacher! Taine Randall has a deg in Law! We have much brawn and brain! A guy I was dating played for our 2nd division team and was doing a deg in Sports Psych.
Alan, I totally agree about the gentleman thing! All the rugby players I know are lovely guys and treat women very well! Was out on night, and supposed to meet up with my cousin. Couldn't find him, and ran into a friend of mine who played for Manawatu(homtetown 2nd Division NPC team). He insisted I stay with them, and I was bought drinks all night by 20 lovely rugby lads! Ahh, bliss!
E, in NZ you have to have a muthguard/gumshield to play rugby, even at the primary school level. My brother got his first one when he was 6! They take that very seriously in NZ, and it was a NZ firm that first did coloured guards to match your team colours!

Tana Umaga announced his retirement from International Rugby! Oh Captain My Captain!
nzrugby.com
All Blacks captain Tana Umaga today announced he is retiring from international rugby and will not be available for the All Blacks, allowing the 74-Test veteran to spend more time with his family and to contribute to provincial and Hurricanes rugby.
The announcement caps a stellar international career which culminated in his leading the All Blacks to an unparalleled string of achievements in 2005 – victory in the DHL New Zealand Lions Series; the Philips Tri Nations title; retention of the Bledisloe Cup and New Zealand’s second-ever Grand Slam.
Umaga made the announcement at a press conference in Wellington today, where he was joined and acknowledged by All Blacks coaches Graham Henry, Wayne Smith and Steve Hansen and by New Zealand Rugby Union Chairman Jock Hobbs and Chief Executive Chris Moller.
Umaga said he has valued every moment in the All Blacks environment and every opportunity to pull on an All Blacks jersey.
“It’s been a tough decision but I think the time is right for me, for my family, and for the team. After the achievements last year and the development that is going on within the team, it is a good time to step down.
“I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and to putting something back into Wellington rugby and the Hurricanes, and to the wider community.”
Henry said Umaga had made an enormous contribution to the All Blacks and to the game of rugby both on and off the field and his presence would be missed at the international level.
“Tana’s legacy is immense – he has led the All Blacks with distinction and to great success, while making a major contribution to the development of All Blacks rugby and what it means to be an All Black.
“Personally, I am sad to see him retire given his performances in 2005 but he has taken the decision to spend more time with family and I applaud him for that. It is fitting that his record will be remembered along with the very best All Blacks captains’.”
Smith, who has been involved with Umaga from his All Blacks debut in 1997, said he has been privileged to have worked with Tana during his time coaching with the All Blacks.
“The best thing about this game is the people in it and the relationships you develop with them. Seeing Tana develop as a person is one of the abiding memories I’ll have from my All Blacks involvement. Tana has always cared about others and carried great responsibility for his own performance and that of the team. He has recently grown into an even greater leader, one who can share the responsibility with others whilst retaining an iron will and resolve to win,” said Smith.
“I think Tana’s decision to retire from international rugby reflects this growth in him as a person and family man. Watching Tana perform the haka and play in the black jersey leaves you in no doubt as to what it means to be an All Black. The All Blacks will miss his influence and he can be immensely proud of what he’s leaving behind.”
Hobbs also paid tribute to Umaga’s contribution as a player and as All Blacks captain.
“Tana has represented both the All Blacks and New Zealand rugby with dignity and with a strong sense of the team’s responsibility to its fans and partners, and he has been an inspiration to many people both on and off the field, as demonstrated by his winning of the Pierre de Coubertin award for Fair Play and his commitment to and work in the community,” Hobbs said.
“His work in areas away from the rugby field on behalf of the All Blacks, New Zealand’s professional rugby players and on behalf of the NZRU, including his key role in presenting New Zealand’s bid for Rugby World Cup 2011, is further testament to his commitment and professionalism.”
Hobbs said that because of his long service and his great contribution to New Zealand rugby as a player and as All Blacks captain, and in consideration of his desire to spend more time with family, Umaga had been granted a special exemption to the requirement that NZRU-contracted players be available for selection for international duty.
Umaga (32) made his debut for the All Blacks against Fiji in 1997 and has appeared in 74 Test matches, 21 as captain, as well as five other matches for the All Blacks.
His last Test was against Scotland at Murrayfield on 26 November as the All Blacks sealed only the second Grand Slam by a New Zealand team in 100 years. He appeared in two Rugby World Cups, in 1999 and 2003, with a knee injury in the opening match ruling him out of the rest of the most recent tournament.
After earning his call-up to the All Blacks on the wing, Umaga switched to centre in 2000 and has also played at second five-eighths for the national team. He was regarded by many observers as the world’s outstanding international centre in 2005.
Umaga first took over the All Blacks captaincy in 2004 when coach Graham Henry named him as the team’s captain, and Umaga led the All Blacks to victories over England twice, Argentina and the Pacific Islanders before retaining the Bledisloe Cup and then, following the Tri Nations, he led the team on an unbeaten end-of-year tour to Europe.
Umaga, who is contracted to the NZRU until the end of 2007, said his focus will now be on contributing to the Hurricanes and Wellington Lions, while continuing to be involved in rugby projects and issues that interest him.
“Being appointed captain of the All Blacks was a huge honour. A lot of the work we have been doing is around preparing the All Blacks for the future and I feel privileged to have played a part in that,” Umaga said.

Sorry to hear that Kap...
But that sounds good news from other teams :D ... LOL
But don't worry too much... I think NZ is the best current team with or without Umaga... Sure, it's a bad loss, but your team don't depend on only 1 guy !
I'm still dying to watch a France - New Zealand game !!! Well... first we'll have the 6 Nations and some great games against England, Wales & Ireland !
I've also heard that Umaga may play in an english team... Is that true or is it just a rumor ? Can someone tell me more about that please ?
Who will replace him as Captain Kap?
As you can see I'm starting to get excited about rugby. Roll on 6 nations.
I'm sure Alan will adore my sig ;)
Nice sig jaws
its unfortunate that you couldnt get the gay guy out of the right of the pic.

Oh, and you heard it from me first: John Clarke for England at 13.
Nice sig jaws
its unfortunate that you couldnt get the gay guy out of the right of the pic.
Watch out, he's coming to Ireland today to appeal for a reduction to his ban. Hopefully by around 7 p.m tonight there will be some good news with his suspension reduced, otherwise we won't see him at all at the forthcoming 6 nations.
somehow i dont think his ban will be reduced
Wales centre Gavin Henson will be available for most of the Six Nations campaign after his ban for elbowing was reduced by three weeks.
His ban now covers only Wales' first two games, against England on 4 February and Scotland eight days later.
Watch out Alan and Frenchie, he'll be back by the time we play you :D

According to what France showed in September, I think we can do a good 6 Nations... Our D is good (may be one of the best french D i've ever seen.. funny because the D coach is English... )... and we still have the french flair...
6 Nations will be a good prepare for the world cup... So I really hope that all the teams will be in good shape...

god i loving beating england in rugby
Yep, me too, and Australia! Sweet nectar from the gods!
Firstly - congrats to Ireland on their victory over Italy. It was much closer than I expected it to be.
Secondly - congrats to England. It was good to see the English play with a bit more flair for a change but the margin of victory did not reflect the true nature of the game.
Thirdly - a few rants - at 21-13 with 25 minutes to go the game was tight and I was looking forward to a close fought battle to the end. What does the ref go and do - he sends off Martin Williams one of our best players - a very harsh decision in my opinion. That knocked the stuffing out of Wales. A couple of the tries were pretty dodgy too. What on earth was the ref doing standing between Steven Jones and Lawrence Dallaglio and on the Matt Dawson try he hit the ball forward out of Michael Owens hands before going on to score. England deserved the victory, but the ref didn't have to give them all that help in the second half.
Fourthly - Didn't the England replacements look ever so silly paddling away on their exercise bikes on the sidelines?
Bring on the Scots!
Well Ireland's win was far far from convincing, both tries where in fact not.Luck prevailed...
the exercise bike thing comes from american football,i imagine someone in the england backroom saw it and decided to implement it there.
Commiserations to France on their loss to the Scots. Scotland put up an awesome display against them. Wales up against the Scots next!
Next weekend's fixtures
Saturday, 11 February 2006
France v Ireland, 13:30
Italy v England, 16:00
Sunday, 12 February 2006
Wales v Scotland, 15:00

Kind of sounds tempting. I saw a site for the 6 nations too but was too lazy to set up a league. Now that the playoff challenge is over I have to say I could do with a fix of fantasy sports. Only thing is I don't know much about NZ rugby so I don't know how I'd do at this.

You just need to pick which teams you think will win each week, it's not about picking the players(but I wish they had that too).
The NZ teams at home are always a good pick(especially Highlanders at home).

When Italy took the lead 9-7 at the start of the second half and Ireland found themselves trailing 29-3 at half time for a while I thought your far fetched joking predictions were about to come true.
Brave fight back by Ireland to close the gap to a final score of 43-31 and Italy put in quite a decent performance despite losing 16-31.

Italy...............the underdog! They've been lulling everyone into a false sense of security whilst secretly developing an actual good team!
Mwahahahahaha! The Hurricanes beat the Blues, at home! First time the Canes have won at Eden Park! I'm a happy Kiwi! Auckland sucks, Wellington rules!

I used to watch some rugby at CU --
only messed with it myself three or four times in a real informal fashion.
Man, was it cool fun -- and the people who play it, for the most part,
excellent guys.
Anyway, I don't know squat about it, but I'll start reading this thread,
and maybe learn a bit about something that is worth learning about.
Best to All.

It's a pretty exciting time in the rugby calendar right now with the 6 nations tournament in full flow in the northern hemishpere and the super 14 having started in the southern hemisphere. There are a couple of useful links in post 41 in the thread for getting to know a bit more about the game. It's good fun and good for getting over football withdrawals now the season is over.
Gah, talk about undeserving...England don't deserve to be where they are right now, they've been playing mediocre-wise for 60 minutes and are winning merely on stamina. If I were Andy, apart from resigning, I'd go with (fine, the tight 5 stay the same...):
1. Andy Sheridan
2. Steve Thompson
3. Matt Stevens
4. Danny Grewcock
5. Steve Borthwick
6. Lewis Moody
7. Chris Jones
8. Martin Corry
9. Matt Dawson
10. Charlie Hodgson
11. Ben Cohen
12. Ollie Smith
13. Jon Clarke
14. Mark Cueto
15. Mark van Gisbergen
The Tindall/Noon centre pairing is rubbash. No creativity whatsoever. It's bosh...followed by more bosh. We've seen 1 running line from those two in two games. Thank god we don't have Dan Parks at fly half...

Your forwards as usual have been good, considering their size advantage they should be too.
I think Hodgson and Cueto have been pretty good for you. As you say the centre pairing has been a bit of weakness, that is the area where Wales have suffered most also with injuries and suspensions weakening our team.
We'll be without our coach for the game against Ireland. I'm very surprised that Ruddock has quit before seeing out the 6 nations. Apparently he wanted to see out the tournament but didn't want to extend his contract. There is some speculation that they intend to offer the job to Scott JOhnson who was in all likelihood set to return to his native Australia after the six nations to take up a position as assistant. I wonder if being offered top dog postition would be enticing enough for him to consider remaining in Wales.

Dunno why the hell they put Voyce there last game, he's not a natural full back. I think VG is ready, as much as I hate Wasps :p and Ellis is crap...Dawson is the only way to go here.
Seriously, if you ever watch a Saints game, look out for Clarke at O/C. He's a beast. Flashes of the old Greenwood, breaks tackles all over the park. He will be in the England set up sooner rather than later.
i personnaly as much of a wasps fan as i am hate matt dawson...thats why im glad they signed eoin reddan..he used to play for connacht so im happy for him..
i think tom voyce was great against wales ,but the italians are playing the spoiler this year so dont judge him to fast...

I think New Zealand has gone a long way to prove that forwards don't neccessarily have to be huge to be effective. We have a fairly small pack, but they're speed is fricking scary, and the can even wangle a kick for placement!
I mean really, when Jack, Williams or Mealamu get a bit of speed on them, they really make some progress!

It's all a bit mad. Loads of speculation as to the exact reasons. He cites personal reasons, some say it was player pressure.
Scott Johnson is now caretaker manager. There was talk he would return to Australia as assistant to the Wallabies a few weeks back. I wonder if he'll be tempted to stay in Wales if he gets offered the top job.

Henry was a turd Wales coach! NZ are good because of Wayne Smith I tells ya! He was a master for the Saints when he was here. I still blame Charvis.

Charvis is not at the top of our pecking order I will admit, but with all the injuries we have to make do with him. He's had some good moments here and there. Dafydd JOnes should be back by the Ireland game so we'll see what happens. Anyhow we don't even need our best players on the field for the trip to Dublin, it's going to be such an easy game. :D

So funny. Graham Henry had little or no support from the Welsh rugby board(hmmm, bit like Ireland), but still managed to wrangle a winning team. One big loss and it was out the door.
The All Blacks are not doing well solely due to Wayne Smith. We have a coach in Henry who believes in playing the best players, and not his favourites. Given that he had to take over the debacle left behind by John Mitchell, he's done a damn fine job!
John Mitchell was the biggest mistake made by NZ Rugby in the last 20 years. Any coach who lets Christian Cullen leave the country because he doesn't get along, and then puts a captain in place that no one knows or likes(Rueben Thorne), is destined to screw up mightily, and oh look, he did!

You know what really gets me? If some of the South Sea Island nations such as Fiji and Samoa didn't have their players nicked by Aus and NZ they could be some of the finest rugby nations in the world...I think that more of an effort should be made to keep them in their home countries tbh.

New Zealand does not need to 'nick' Pacific Island players. The majority of them do qualify as New Zealanders, and it is a given in NZ that playing for the All Blacks is the pinnacle of rugby success. New Zealand has plenty of great players of their own without needing to resort to 'nicking' players.
However, if players want to play professionally, and on a regular basis, they do need to play for a Super 14 team, or NPC team, or go to Europe. Most choose Super 14 as they stay close to home, and it is common knowledge that they will be permitted to play for their home nation. Unlike the hold-outs in Europe.
Please get your facts right before discussing this. And they call themselves Pacific Islanders, not South Sea. That's a colonialist attitude.

OH MY GOD...if any of you get the opportunity, get the Saints v Sarries game which was played today. Absolute demolition 58-17 to Saints...Lamont scored 4, with Cohen, Tupai, Harding and Rudd all crossing. It was one of the best displays of rugby I've seen ever, absolutely sublime from the 10th minute onwards (Saints were 10-0 down after ten minutes...)
Sharky Robinson and King Carlos as the half backs were sublime. Including Spencer's backwards chip which was sick. Crap ball from the ruck, Spencer catches it facing the wrong way, chips it over his head, collects it one handed over the Sarries defence and proceeds to release Cohen who almost scored...he also put Cohen through on a sublime inside ball which was absolutely sick. Obscene talent. Absolutely obscene. Most fun game I've seen in ages, it really was a stellar performance.
That backline in full:
9. Sharky Robinson
10. Carlos Spencer
11. Ben Cohen
12. David Quinlan/Robbie Kydd
13. John Clarke
14. Sean Lamont
15. Bruce Reihana
When they get ball...scary scary scary :p

Saints are now in 7th and bearing down on Worcester. If they can play like that more often, they'll rip almost every team to shreds, it's great, the team has really gelled.
Lamont was in good form...his first came from a crap kick from Jackson. He took it on the Saints ten metre line and carved up the Sarries defence for the try. His second one saw him outmuscle Bruce Reihana on a cross kick (I don't think Brucey was happy with that, he wanted the try :p), his third was a great Spencer break and he scored from the Sarries 22 (carrying about 3 opposition players, mind). Fourth was an interception between the saints 22 and 10 metre. Scarborough and Castignede weren't too interested in tackling 6'1/15st of fast moving scotsman so he skinned them and outran Richard Haughton (just...Haughton brought him down just short but Sean reached out for the line. That said, Haughton is like the 3rd fastest player in the league) for the try.
The other tries...the first two were opportunist really. Paul Tupai's came first from a charged down Jackson kick, the second one saw Sharky snaffle a sh*te Bracken pass, break a couple of tackles and offload to Harding for the try. Cohen's came after about 12 phases, Reihana threaded through a beautiful grubber kick which Cohen collected for the score (on Lamont's wing no less...). And Rudd's was scrappy play around the Sarries 5 metre, he just picked it up and put it over before he was put into touch, great strength.
But...when all's said and done, my Man of the Match was Damien Browne (second row). Did all the dirty work, set up the platform and put in big hits everywhere as well as making some major holes and offloading nicely.
Definitely. Jaws beat me soundly last week, beginners luck!

The star full-back for Yale University in the 1968 season was one George W Bush as he helped his side to a dramatic victory over Harvard. During the 2004 Presidential election campaign a photo appeared in US papers of Bush making a tackle with what can only be described as a swinging right arm.
Bush’s predecessor Bill Clinton played rugby in the late 1960s while at Oxford University. He later said, “Being and American, I didn’t know any of the rules. But I was the biggest guy on the team, so the coach said to me ‘Clinton, go out there and get in someone’s way.’ So that’s what I did, got in people’s way.”
Two contrasting political figures who played a spot of rugby were Idi Amin, 1970s tyrant of Uganda, who was a winger in his younger days for Kampala RFC, and Che Guevara the Marxist revolutionary leader in Cuba, who played rugby as young man in Cordoba in Argentina.

So Bush goes for illegal tackling, Clinton has no clue, a crazy African winger, and a communist!

Only five of the Grand slam team of last year played against Ireland. Blooming injuries.
We need two out of two wins from the remaining games to have any hope of persuading Scott Johnson to lead us into the World CUp.

Super 14 rugby is a tournament featuring teams from New Zealand(5 teams), Australia(4 teams) and South Africa(5 teams).
Originally the Super 12, it was expanded this year to 14 teams. The tournament provides selectors from all 3 countries the opportunity to view players for national selection, as well as allowing players from Pacific nations(Tonga, Samoa, Fiji) more playing time leading to possible national selection.
Has been dominated by New Zealand teams, namely the Canterbury Crusaders, in the past.

If only Scotland had won the lineouts. Good defence on both sides, I'll give them that. I think next year the Scots will be a better team, they'll have gelled better. And hopefully they'll have a new fly half. Ross seemed to give the backs a bit more pace. They've got a class back three...they just need to use it better. It's a bit like England except England's just more glaring.
Saints beat Gloucester 21-20 although I hear it should've been a bigger margin... ;)

In one sense, it is good to see them performing and they did deserve something from this championship.
I'm not happy with a draw but at least we didn't lose and got spared the headlines across the news and papers that would follow from being the first team to lose at home to Italy!:ugh:

I'd be game for a bit of scouting, maybe some personal training for a few of those players too.

I think Gavin may be having a Percy Montgomery issue with the hair.
Percy used to do his hair quite meticulously, and played well if the hair stayed put, but if it rained, his game went to s**t. Now that he doesn't give a damn, his game has improved regardless of the weather.
Gav needs to understand that he plays a full contact, winter sport, and chances are, he's going to get hurt, dirty, muddy and messy!

Humiliating afternoon for the English in Paris - makes me feel a bit better about yesterday now
Two consecutive games without a try for England.
Now it's down to two teams for the championship, either France or Ireland.
Ireland are away to the English for their last game and the French come to Wales for a visit.
2 out 4 predictions correct this weekend (Saints/England).
I'm quite happy about this because we're getting closer to a change. Here's my top tips for a revitalisation of English Rugby:
1. Fire the f***wit
2. Hire a decent coach. And I'd press for a non-English one right now considering that the last two have been highly arrogant.
3. Book a tour. Somewhere like the Pacific Islands or Argentina. Somewhere which will be challenging but will allow experimentation.
4. Pick a squad which allows for much experimentation.
5. Choose your teams carefully to get decent combinations. Flanker and Centre partnerships which will WORK, for example:
Chris Jones/Magnus Lund/Martin Corry
Lewis Moody/Pat Sanderson/James Forrester
Ollie Smith/Jon Clarke
Stuart Abbot/Jamie Noon
Olly Barkley/Mike Tindall (for ****s and giggles)
6. Get a good idea of what WORKS and then start piecing together the on-form partnerships.
7. Hey Presto, the Autumn Internationals will be a good test and not a complete and utter humiliation
8. Stand a DECENT chance of winning the world cup.
What say you? You have my word! WHAT SAY YOU?!
