Chargers visiting with safety

The San Diego Chargers have been quiet in free agency so far, but that may be changing.

The team is visiting with Tampa Bay safety Jermaine Phillips. If signed, Phillips would pair with Eric Weddle. The Chargers have been looking to upgrade their safety position and signing the talented Phillips would accomplish the upgrade. Many around the league thing Phillips is one of the more underrated safeties in the league.

Also, the team may sign Drayton Florence, who went to Jacksonville from San Diego last year. He was recently cut by the Jaguars. The San Diego Union Tribune has reported if Florence is signed, the team could trade cornerback Antonio Cromartie, whose production slipped in 2008. The word around the league that Cromartie could fetch a third-round pick.

Meanwhile, the talks about a restructured contract with LaDainian Tomlinson continue. So, after a slow start to the new league year, thing may be heating up in San Diego.

That would be an intresting signing for them, would give them a very nice saftey tandem.

I find it find it funny that the 2 UFA safety that I had rated the highest have yet to sign with a new team they are Phillips and Jones.

safeties aren't really important in our defense, it's always been an underachieving position

the only thing that matters for the sd defense in 09 is if merriman's healthy

if he is, it will be a top 10 D, if he isn't they'll be below 20th, possibly last

Yeah Jones is a UFA and he did miss a few games last season but he is fine and played the majority of the season. I have no idea why there has been no news about him I am just shocked that he isn't signed yet or even being talked about.

Then again he is young and productive and thats not what we are looking for so I guess he doesn't fit the bill...

Jones was my #1 Safety followed by Phillips.

Could be teams just do not like the numbers his agent is telling them. He has pro bowl talent, but he may want 7MM a year, and that is Ed Reed type money.

Phillips is just now emerging, so he may have come down on what he expects.

we've always had some pretty crap safety play and it's never affected us getting to the playoffs

so what your saying is your cool with Clinton Hart starting at safety???

he is probably the worst starting safety in the league, other teams just go after him all day.

you can always get better, if we have better safeties behind merriman they could give him the extra second to get there buddy.
