Ok, so here's the scoop. I have to write a biographical essay, basically using other people to discuss a question/thesis I pose. I wanted this to be football oriented so I came up with one, and I'd like you to post your opinion, answering the question and your reasoning, possibly with any examples you want as we always do. And either in the thread or through PM please give me your name so I can quote you in my article.

Thanks!

Here it is:

In sports, many members of the media speculate that no position on a team is more important than the quarterback in football. Known as the face of a football team, the quarterback is often credited with winning and losing games, even to the point of being recorded to their names, such as Brett Farve being the "winningest quarterback in NFL history" however, how much credit does a quarterback deserve when it comes to winning a game?

Note: i have to make this 5 to 7 pages, so if you want to give a longwinded answer I'm ok with it CP goes to those I use, and if I have to I'll keep track so as to not forget you

I would say the QB is VERY important to winning Championships, but that can be confused as the QB must be GREAT to win, but I just don't see that as the case.

First and formost, your defense is the MOST important to winning IMO. Even teams who have won the superbowl in the past that didn't have statistically great defenses came usually stepped up and played big in the big games (playoffs).

Then I believe it is your QB, but like I said before, I don't think you have to have a great QB to win. My thing on football has always been turnovers. If your defense can force turnovers and your offense can hang onto the ball, I would say your going to win 90% of the time...Just from my experience. So what I'm getting at is that you need a QB who can hang on to the ball, and make smart decisions. A QB that takes what the defense gives him, and doesn't turn the ball over. And of course, when the play needs to be made, your going to need a guy that can make it, period. But you don't need the guy with the strongest arm or the most accurate passer or the best at excaping pressure, you just need a guy that plays smart and doesn't turn the ball over, and can make the throws he needs to make down the stretch to win a game.

A good QB is a need for any team that wants to win football games.

If you look at the past 10 super bowls only 2 of the winners didnt have an elite or at least an above average QB (Baltimore and Tampa). Those two teams had one thing in common, a record breaking defense.

So basically, if you want to consistently win you need either an elite QB or an all-world defense.

Sorry i cant go into much more detail, im in a hurry

good luck with the project:salute!:

A QB is usually very important to winning, but some teams have been able to win the SB with mediocre QB's. Tampa Bay and Baltimore immediately come to mind. But those teams had stellar defenses. We have neither the defense nor the running game to compensate for a lack of a good QB. We have made a lot of additions to both the running back position and defense but with a lot of stopgap type players, and the defense is still weak at certain areas (DL and OLB in particular).

That is why it is imperative that we keep Cutler or that if ultimately, he forces them to trade him, we find a suitable replacement for him. I don't think Chris Simms is a suitable replacement. To me, Simms is strictly a backup, and maybe not even that.

For us, a good QB is very important, because we don't have a good enough defense yet to rely on that to win consistently.
