View Full Version : KWHIT's 2009 1st round mock!

This is how I see the 1st round shaping up.

1. Lions- QB Matt Stafford (Georgia)
I think he is a lock to be the #1 pick, they want that strong arm to hit Mega-tron down the field.
2. Rams- LB Aaron Curry (Wake Forest)
Everyone thinks OT here and it makes sense but I think Spags wins out and has Curry as the #1 player on his board, the GM listens and they make him the #2 pick. Spags loves defense and gets a guy to anchor his for the next 10 years.
3. Chiefs- OT Jason Smith (Baylor)
With this pick the Chiefs have the luxury of moving Branden Albert to RT or Guard where he is a better fit. Smith will protect Cassel's blind side for years to come.
4. Seahawks- OT Eugene Monroe (Virginia)
The guy the Hawks wanted all along falls into thier laps. Monroe can learn under one of the league's all-time greats and be ready to be a rock on the left side for the next decade.
5. Browns- WR Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech)
It has been reported that the Browns are in love with this guy. I think they go ahead and take Crabtree with a deal already pretty much in place for Braylon Edwards which we'll see later.
6. Bengals- OT Andre Smith (Alabama)
The Bungals have never shyed away from character issues and they will probably never learn (as evident by the Tank Johnson signing), Smith has all the talent in the world and will be a nice addition to thier depelted O-Line, if he matures.
7. Raiders- DE Brian Orakpo (Texas)
Al Davis actually makes a smart pick and gets a pass-rushing force in Orakpo. I think Al has his eye on Crabtree but when he is gone he has to scramble around and without having the chance to really think about it he makes the right choice.
8. Broncos*- NT B.J. Raji (Boston Coll.)
I have a gut feeling that the Broncos and Jags have an agreement in place if the Broncos target player is there, the Jags will move down, we may overpay a bit by giving up 12 and a 3rd this year plus maybe a leter round pick but we get the NT that is so hard to find for the 3-4. I can imagine the reactions on fans faces when they think we are for sure trading up for Sanchez and we take Raji.
9. Packers- OLB Everett Brown (Florida St.)
The Packers listen to all kinds of offers from teams wanting to move up to take Sanchez but turn them all down because the guy they want is staring them in the face. Brown is exactly what they need to make the transistion to the 3-4 a little smoother.
10. 49ers- QB Mark Sanchez (USC)
I'm a little skeptical that the 49ers will pass on Sanchez if he is available. What's the rule? If you have a franchise QB available to you and you do not have one you must take one, well here ya go.
11. Bills- CB Malcolm Jenkins (Ohio St.)
I know they took a CB last year but I just can't get over how the Bills seem to love Buckeyes DB's, Jenkins can also play Safety which is an area of need for the Bills.
12. Jaguars*- WR Jeremy Maclin (Mizzou)
After trading down with the Broncos they get the WR they wanted all along. Maclin has good size, blazing speed and adds KR abilities as well, a no brainer here.
13. Redskins- LB Brian Cushing (USC)
The Skins will be looking for some youth on defense and Cushig will fit their scheme well, he can play SAM or MIKE.
14. Saints- CB Vontae Davis (Illinois)
This is high risk/high reward pick. I think pyhsically Davis is the best CB in the draft but he has some character concerns, the Saints will overlook these to strengthen thier defensive backfield.
15. Texans- RB Chris Wells (Ohio St.)
Gary Kubiak is salivating at the thought of Beanie and Slaton as his 1-2 punch, this is about all the further I see him falling.
16. Chargers- DE Tyson Jackson (LSU)
After losing Igor I really think this pick is a no-brainer, Jackson can anchor well vs. the run and can provide some push from the outside as well.
17. Jets- QB Josh Freeman (Kansas St.)
Rumor has it the Jets really like this kid and after toying with the idea of moving up to get Sanchez, they settle for the guy they have rated higher anyways.
18. Broncos- DE/OLB Robert Ayers (Tennesee)
Ayers is exactly the kind of versatile player the Broncos need for thier new 3-4 look. He can play DE with his hand down or stand up and rush the passer, another Adalius Thomas type. Raji and Ayers will improve our front 7 dramatically.
19. Buccaneers- DT Peria Jerry (Ole Miss)
Jerry is a nice fit in the cover 2 the Bucs employ and is the best Defensive player available at this point.
20. Lions- LB Rey Maualuga (USC)
Everyone seems to think the Lions need O-Line help but I think they are sold on Jeff Backus holding up for another 3 or 4 years and they invested and early pick on an OT last year. They got thier franchise QB and now they want a guy to lead thier defense.
21. Eagles- OT Michael Oher (Ole Miss)
This guy has fallen far enough and the Eagles will look to solidify thier O-Line. With the addition of Stacy Andrews (RT), Shawn Andrews (G) and Oher being groomed at LT this line will look dominant.
22. Vikings- WR Percy Harvin (Florida)
They are really looking to upgrade thier passing game to open things up for Peterson and Harvin can do just that and help immensly in the return game as well.
23. Patriots- RB Knowshon Moreno (Georgia)
I think the Laurence Maroney project is officially done on Bean town, Moreno reminds me of a Belichick player and they get good value here.
24. Falcons- TE Brandon Pettigrew (Okla. St)
Another weapon for Ryan, Pettigrew will be a nice fit in this offense and I really thin they'll neglect the defense if he is available.
25. Dolphins- LB James Laurinaitis (Ohio St)
This kid is just the type of player Bill Parcels loves, he won't jump off the chart at you but will improve any defense and will be a nice value here.
26. Ravens- WR Darius Heyward-Bey (Maryland)
They pluck this guy right from thier own backyard. Flacco needs weapons and Heyward Bey is just the big play threat he needs. Mason is getting old and they need someone to groom behind him.
27. Colts- LB Clint Sintim (Virginia)
He is good value here and he just seems like a Colts type of pick to me.
28. Eagles- S Louis Delmas (West. Michigan)
After losing Dawkins they have to something at Safety, so they reach a little and take the best one in the draft.
29. Browns*- LB Clay Matthews Jr. (USC)
This pick is made possible by trading Braylon Edwards to the Giants. After taking Crabtree they pull the trigger on this deal to get a top notch defensive player. Imagine how crazy the Browns faithfull will be to see another Clay Matthews in Brown and Orange.
30. Titans- CB Darius Butler (UCONN)
A good fit for this defense and after all the good recievers are gone they decide to add a talented CB to be groomed to take over for Nick Harper in a year or 2.
31. Cardinals- OLB Larry English (N. Illinois)
English will provide a nice pass rush for the Cardinals in thier 3-4 and is good value here a real smart pick.
32. Steelers- C Alex Mack (California)
I think the main focus of this draft for Pittsburgh will be O-line and they get the future anchor of it in Mack, a Steelers type player.

This is what I see going down, there will be trades and while they are hard to predict I tried to throw a few in there to make it interesting.

FLAME AWAY!!!

OK, my take:

Raji is the best dlinemen out of a very weak class, do not trade up for anyone. Either trade down for more picks Or stay at 12 and pick the best running back (Moreno) or Linebacker (Laurinaitis) available.

I like Denver's Picks.

If we ended up with BJ Raji and Robert Ayers I would be very happy.

As far as some of your picks???

St Louis just let go Orlando Pace. They need a T
The Raiders need a WR not really a DE
The Bills need a DE

Overall good job.

Mike Mayock on NFL network" I believe that 3 years from now that Robert Ayers will be the best defensive player in this draft.

I am not saying this but he is very high on him.

The Bills need a DE- Maybe, but there are really none available worth taking at 11.

Thanks for the positives though!

Nice mock!

Raji and Ayers would upgrade our D right away. You have some shockers with the Rams passing on an OT and the Raiders going DE instead of WR but until the card is turned in its fun to make educated guesses. :)

I would be happy with Maualuga at 18. I think he is going to be a special player in the middle. But, Ayers is a great pick at 18 as well.

If Raji falls to 8 I think we must trade up to nab him, with him any kind of Linebacker or DE we can get at 18 would be nice!

It would be cool if that's the way it went down. However, I dont think we should be trading picks away. Building this defence will take some time. As for Spags taking Curry at 2, I like your thought process. The Rams have drafted defense in the first round the last two years. They also hired a defensive head coach. I dont think it's a stretch to say they go for Curry.

the chiefs wouldnt pass on orakpo

Okay, I like this mock, but I think the Rams and Chiefs pick should be swapped. I just don't see the Rams passing on a huge position of need unless they plan on getting Oher through a trade later. OLB is a need for the Rams, but just not as big a need as LT is.

But I think the Chiefs pick is what is going to make or break how everyone's mock goes. Most everybody has the Chiefs taking Curry, but if the Chiefs go OT or Orakpo. That could drastically change how the draft would go because the next 3-6 teams to draft would love for a guy like Curry. But in the end, I think the Chiefs go Curry and Rams go Jason Smith.

I'd be shocked if the Raiders take Orakpo over Maclin, LOL that's just not the Raiders way when there is a WR like Maclin available.

Why would we trade up for Raji? I don't like it, I think he'll be there at 12. I wouldn't mind him at 12, especialy if we could nab Ayers at 18.

you can think that, but its not a definite. I would sacrifice a third to get pretty much a sure thing in raji.

Good mock, i would be very satisfied with those picks.

haven't the Jags been mentioned as looking to pick up a pass-catching TE? 'cause i can think of one that people say doesn't fit in his new coach's system, and the asking price would be somewhere around a 3rd round pick...

What makes him a sure thing? The fact that he played only about 20 snaps a game? Or because he missed the entire 2007 year? Oh nevermind, It must be the way he got used at the senior bowl and has had drug isues his entire college career.

Nice mock, but I don't think the Eagles will draft a safety in the first round. Remember that they did sign Sean Jones from Cleveland.

I'd rather have Aaron Maybin or Larry English instead of Ayers for a 3-4 OLB.

That's a great thought if Jax will do it! It saves a third round pick and a blocking TE could be selected with a later pick.

I thought Jax was excited about Mercedes Lewis?

They also have Quentin Mickel who had a very good year last year. I agree they will not take a safety. I would not be surprised to see this pick go to Buffalo as part of a Jason Peters deal.

You mean the drug issues that were proven to be lies, don't believe everything you read. I thought he looked damn good at the Senior Bowl.

If we can get our 3-4 NT by only giving up a 3rd round selection when we have 11 draft picks then why the heck not?

He tested positively for marijuana before the 2008 season. He's had drug problems before the combine drug test.

Raji would be a good value at 12, but I just don't see him being worth moving up to get.
