Cleveland Browns release defensive lineman Shaun Smith
by By Mary Kay Cabot
Saturday August 08, 2009, 9:56 AM

Browns defensive lineman Shaun Smith, who was heading into his third year with the team, was released Saturday, a source close to the situation said.

No reason was given for his ouster, the source said.

Smith (6-2,, 325) was a versatile lineman who could play end or nosetackle. Smith appeared in 11 games last season with nine starts. He totaled 47 tackles, including 22 solo.

But Smith's on-the-field accomplishments were overshadowed by a run-in with quarterback Brady Quinn in the weight room during which Smith reportedly punched Quinn in the face. Smith's representatives met with the Browns at the NFL Combine in February to determine whether or not the Browns wanted to keep him in light of the incident.

They were told the Browns were prepared to move forward with Smith.

Smith, one of the most vocal player on the team, was signed by the Browns as an unrestricted free agentin March of 2007 after spending two full seasons with the Bengals.

I definitely think we could use this guy. 6'2'' 325 can play everywhere on the DL including NT. McDaniels likes guys that can play more than one spot. Browns fans say he is a pretty good player, the only thing they have against him is the Brady Quinn incident.

How can the front office not make this move? With Parker down (who knows how bad that injury is) we really need this guy.

Are you aware that Shaun Smith is the person who injured Brady Quinn in a locker room fight? Reports are he either punched him or used a dumbbell to injure him after an argument. (I see they reported it in this news report - but you didn't say anything about it - so bringing it to your attention even if you just skimmed over it)

Yeah I'm aware. I don't know the whole story, but I bet you Quinn deserved it.

Quinn is the QB of the future for the Browns. How would you feel if a player on your team didn't like what Orton had to say, so he beat him up in the locker room. What does that do to team morale? Your starting QB was beaten up by a member of the team and is missing time because of it. You cannot allow such behavior in the locker room. Such players should be disciplined and it speaks volumes of Crennel when he did nothing about it.

Smith disappeared in games and became a non-factor. He was called out for that. Rather than being a civilized person he chose to assault the person calling him out. If the Browns had an actual coach at the time Smith would have been waived on the spot or at the very least suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. But since Crennel was the HC at the time he got off with a slap on the wrist.

Also, FYI if you want a good Browns board as opposed to www.thebrownsboard.com visit http://www.dawgtalkers.net/ - that is the other board I am on.

There is no excuse for doing what he did, unless he was defending himself. We usually learn around age 3 or 4 that it's not okay to retaliate with voilence when someone gets under our skin.

Nevertheless, he has been in the league for a number of years, and if this is his first incident of that kind of nature I would assume he should get another chance, somewhere.

I understand why Browns fans would be upset with Quinn being a QB and all. But fights happen. I doubt Smith walked up and decked him for no reason. Brady Quinn shouldn't have been running his mouth to a guy twice his size...

Quinn reminds me of Jay Cutler with how arrogant he is.

Brady Quinn rubs alot of people the wrong way. He comes off as a spoiled punk that has a distorted sense of entitlement.

I would probably want to punch him too. That doesn't make Smith a bad guy to me at all, it just means he didn't like Quinn, and for that, I can't blame him.

Steve Smith punched a teammate in the face last preseason, and it worked out OK for Carolina.

What the hell, sign him.

So?

He was injured and he went to the player responsible for blocking him that missed what he was supposed to do and gave him an earful. Quinn was in pain and was quite angry. Walker missed his assignment. If this is your evidence of Quinn being "arrogant" then you need to come up with some better material. I've seen numerous players in the NFL do the same thing. Including Jay Cutler, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Phillip Rivers.

He would fit in, but I'm not sure I want a guy like him. He talks A LOT of trash, and a lot of his teammates in Cleveland HATE this guy because of all his trash talking to his own teammates.

He could be a problem more than a help to our defensive line.

They can't all be choir boys; at some point you need men that can play and with all the question marks on the Dline I don't see how they can pass this up.

They at least should bring him into camp.

I say sign the guy asap! Parker is placed on IR and we need the competition and depth at the postion.

Most importantly Smith has the experience in the 3-4 at NT!

We need a no nonsense type guy, McDaniels would be crazy not to go after this guy.

If we have to, put a clause in his contract or something. I don't care what but get the guy into camp!

Browns DL Shaun Smith is reportedly already wearing out his welcome with the Browns new coaching staff.
Coaches told Smith to "shape up and shut up" at a recent meeting. Smith's mouth has been an issue in the past, and he was already losing popularity with teammates after last year's fight with Brady Quinn.

Browns TE Darnell Dinkins confirmed Monday that Shaun Smith did strike Brady Quinn in the face during a weight-room altercation last week.
Dinkins said Quinn had a mark on his face after the fight and coach Romeo Crennel was "very upset," ultimately benching Smith for Week 16. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Smith punched Quinn after Smith was "jawing" at him in the weight room. Smith has been accused of not playing hard late in the season and the incident can't help his standing with the club.

Bengals signed DT Shaun Smith off waivers from the Saints.
He was released after sneaking into the pressbox before last week's game to eat.

Saints released DT Shaun Smith a day after he was caught eating in the Atlanta press room before a Saints game.
That's a new one.

Sounds like trouble. No thanks.

I don't know... All the other players praise Brady Quinn, when Kellen Winslon became a Buccaneer he said Quinn should be the starter in Cleveland because he is a hard worker and leader. Mangini praised Quinn's work ethic in the offseason. On the other hand, Smith is a pile of crap that has no respect from teammates and smells like trouble, he is not the kind of guy we need on the roster. Can you imagine Smith hanging around with our young linemen?

Stuff like that leads me to believe Quinn is a jack*ss and must have done something to deserve getting clocked in the face.

That report was without merit.

Police showed up at the location and the only thing they saw was a 32 year old man (Jason Thompson) arguing with Quinn. Quinn backed down and Thompson attacked not only Quinn but also the police. Thompson was arrested for disorderly conduct.

If there was something that happened that night the news would get out immediately. Not several months later.

Charlie you're a good guy but do you honestly think something like that would just pop out of nowhere? When there's smoke... there's fire Charlie!

I never liked Quinn though, this only put the icing on the cake for me. I really hope D.A. wins the starting job, as I've been rooting for him since he started playing in the NFL.

I know that the media especially has it in for the Browns. Several years ago after (I don't recall what news service it was) lost their rights to the Browns preseason games they resorted to sensational journalism. Constantly bickering at the organization for whatever they saw fit. A few years ago when Randy Lerner's neice (I think it was his neice) drowned tragically in the family pool the news because of their bickering with the Browns saw it fit to air the 911 call just as an in your face to the Lerner family. The media has since then constantly made up things about the Browns and done biased journalism in an attempt to dismiss the Browns.

This Quinn deal is likely a part of that. Because the media just doesn't want to see the fans in Cleveland and around the world happy. They just love kicking them when they are down. That's one reason Lerner is a bit of a recluse. He sees full well just how disgusting the media is.

WOW, the media has yet another story for nitpicking at the Browns. See what I mean? The only thing the media can come up with is something negative about the Browns. Constantly going after the Browns or whatever reason. This time they are going after Quinn claiming he "cheated" at a Browns scrimmage.
