Ryan Torain is essentially finished with the Broncos after he was placed on the waived injured list Wednesday.

Injuries continued to haunt Torain after he was diagnosed Wednesday with a strained left knee ligament.

Torain had missed most of his rookie year in 2008 with a dislocated elbow and a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

To replace Torain, the Broncos signed former University of Texas-El Paso running back Marcus Thomas, who was at practice Wednesday. The tailback Thomas was a fifth-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers last year.

Torain, who was impressive in one half of one game last season, was expected to get another chance provided he returned healthy from knee surgery. But Wednesday's strain ended that expectation.

The once-promising Torain returned in Week 9 last year from a dislocated elbow, but in his next game, against Cleveland, he left with a knee injury that turned out to be a torn ACL.

In another running back development, LaMont Jordan returned to practice from his leg injury Wednesday.

That doesn't really surprise me much.

I thought he might make the squad on the depth chart but as already mentioned, his injury plagued his chances.

If he only was healthy to show his skills... Too bad, maybe it's for the best, though I doubt he can find a job as a RB with another team.

I really hope we only keep one of the Vets, preferably Jordan. I would just like us to give Moreno, Hillis and Walker the majority of the carries. Oh course giving atleast Buckhalter or Jordan carries but I really think they could have saved some money by not signing Buckhalter. We got youth at the RB position, and recent trend in NFL backs has been young guys can produce as easily if not better than older backs. And we already got our Goalline RB in Hillis. Thank God JJ Arrington failed his physical.

I knew this was going to happen as soon as Marcus Thomas was signed... Its very unfortunate cause Ryan is an awesome kid and showed major promise. Hopefully some RB depleted team will pick him up and give him a shot.

:salute: to Ryan Torain!

guy actually looked very good vs the browns and it's amazing to think that small amount of carries could be his entire nfl career

He really did show promise as a bruiser sort of running back. He always kept a positive attitude in a situation where I know personally I would have struggled to. Injury after injury and then our signing 4 RB's and drafting Moreno, he didn't complain once and I have a ton of respect for him.

Even if he did stay healthy there really wasn't room for him here to get any playing time. I hope he lands another job (Houston?) and has a great career because he certainly has the talent the body is the only question.

Ryan Torain :salute!:

Once compared to Terrell Davis by Mike Shanahan, running back Ryan Torain's Broncos career likely ended Wednesday when the team placed him on the waived/injured list.

Torain was viewed as a possible starter in Denver last year, but a dislocated elbow and a torn ACL limited him to two games, one of which he started.

He was one of the early stories of training camp, showing surprising explosiveness. But a strained knee ligament suffered Wednesday sealed his fate. (The fact Josh McDaniels signed half of the available free agent running backs this offseason didn't help.)

As one Denver back leaves, the team's future at the position is making a big first impression.

First-round pick Knowshon Moreno is reportedly expected to start Denver's preseason opener despite his lengthy holdout.

He's gunna have knee problems throughout his life. He can obviously play, but his knees aren't going to let him. I've gone through the same thing with my knees. Eventually you have to realize that you gotta start taking it easy.

Yeah, then the Cardinals can have two young injury-plagued running backs in Beanie Wells and Torain.

He was injury waived, so he will get an injury settlement. How much, I dont know, but it will probably be well more than any of us make in a year. :)

Sucks and all but it's been coming. He would've been lost in the pack regardless and would have at most been a PS injury reserve.

What do you think this does for the job security of Buckalter/Jordan/Walker?

Do you still think one more of them will be cut?

Do you think we'll go after another FA running back? (Sean Alexander for example. Heard he'll play for next to nothing.)

Could this mean the return of JJ Arrington (or is he done for the year?) Tatum, or even Reuben Droughns (Think he's still a FA)

Where is Michael Pittman right now? :salute:

JJ is done done for the year. He has to have microfracture surgery. His career might even be over.

Tatum has been begging for a shot. But I dont think anyone is listening.

Torain has been nothing but classy and positive since becoming a Bronco. From the amount of injuries he sustained, to watching Josh McD bring in all of these running backs... You heard nothing but positive talk from Torain.

Sad to see him go, I was rooting for the guy. Good luck Ryan! :logo: :salute:

I know you were a fan, but Im not sure why he wouldnt be positive. He really hadnt established himself with the franchise. He had one half of work under his belt in the first season and saddled with being "injury prone." Had he rocked the boat, he would have been out in an instance. He didnt have a choice but to be classy up to this point or he would have been gone in The Great Shanny Purge.

but that's exactly what shows he has class....he understood his place in the organization while it lasted and kept an optimistic outlook....look at clarett....he came in and just expected everything handed to him on a silver platter...an attitude like that will almost guarantee him success outside of football if he never plays again.....hope he has a good life

Why? Moreno/Hillis/Buckhalter/Jordan/Walker

Were you a Broncvos fan last year when EIGHT RBs bit the dust? and were placed on IR?

You can't have too many decent RBs in the NFL.

That said, I doubt his injury will allow him to compete in 2009, in which case he's probably done permanently.

He'll have to rehab for another year and then try and get a workout for another team and then get invited to training camp somewhere next season.

His chances aren't all that red hot for a career in the NFL, but better than zero.

He still does, after all, have real talent, if he could ever get healthy -- which admittedly is a long-shot at this point.
