I'd take the old 8-bit Tecmo bowl over ESPN 2K5. Madden is so much better than ESPN it isn't even funny, ESPN is choppy in it's movements... The presentation on ESPN gets old, it's cool at first but then it becomes old hat and all I want to do is play the game anyway.... Game play goes to Madden by far and away. If you're a true football fan and understand the game and it's intricacies you know Madden is the game to get...
Madden 9.5/10
ESPN -3.5/10
Whover thinks ESPN is better than Madden obviously has never watched a real football game before

Although I have never played ESPN, I don't understand how a game could be any better than Madden, it's amazing. As long as it has been around they've had that much more time to work out any kinks. There is one though that I'd love to see fixed. There needs to be some type of action button to make the receiver drag the second foot when making catches on the sidelines.

Espn is so much easier to play than Madden. That is why some prefer espn to Madden. Those who constantly say they get tired of the outrageous scores dont even play all madden. Madden is for the REAL ballers. Espn is for the video game players.

What does playing a videogame have to do with watching a real football game? That's the stupidest crap i've ever heard. If you compare playing a video game to playing/watching a real football game you really have no life. You had Madden for what 2 days? I bet your in your 8th season already. All I got to say is that you are incredibly stupid for saying that. I play football, and I do plenty of watching it and I saw that ESPN is better.

Settle down young pup.... The point is video games are made to be as realistic as it possible (closest to what you watch on TV), in that aspect, ESPN doesn't hold a candle to Madden... Presentation on ESPN is good and fun for about a minute and a half but then that quickly fades and you're left with a crappy football game, might as well go get NFL Blitz....

Not gonna argue, since I know I like ESPN and Madden both and there's no point in trying to change a tunnel-visioned 'fanboy' for either game; but I'm gonna say that ESPN's rating system is awesome. Just that one thing. Because there's so much more than physical features for a player (that's all that Madden shows, besides 'awareness'). A corner can be extremely fast, quick, have a high vertical, but if he doesn't know how to cover he's useless (ESPN has a 'coverage' attribute). Some QB's suck at throwing on the run ('scramble' attribute); and other QB's can lead teams and make his surrounding players better ('leadership' attribute).
I like both games, and I must say that some of you Madden fans really need to open up as ESPN is on the same level as your favorite football game.
Cheers!

Cheers! I couldnt disagree more. Trevor Pryce rated lower than Champ Bailey. You make a good point though, they have more in depth ratings. They just come up wrong. Al Wilson isnt even an elite mlb. Infact, most of the Broncos are under rated. I just dont see how bronco fans like this game.(I say that over and over, I know it gets stale-it's true though)

See, like other people said, the point is to get as close to the real thing as you can. And I made that comment just to show that Madden is more realistic than ESPN. If you like ESPN, thats fine. Its just my opinion....

Everybody is allowed to have their own opinion so if he likes ESPN let it go. You like Madden and he likes Espn people have their own likes and dislikes, everybody isn't the same and if they were then the world would be dull. I like both games and I play both, imo both games have their negatives and positives.

Really, in my opinion I have both, and I enjoy both. Each has its plus and negatives but overall they are both fun to play. Only thing is some of the players are rated way to low.

Football is a struggle and I guess you are having the most trouble than any other Person in here who has Madden NFL 2005. Guess you just not ballin'. You ain't gettin' it done, Son. We betta send the Turk to get you to see the Head Coach and while you're at it, bring your Playbook.

Bottom line with madden....
VERY DISAPPOINTING
First the good:
1. The DB play is much better, and the defence in general is fun to play. I don't feel like the computer will pull out a last minute drive to win all the time.
2. The gameplay is good. They got rid of speed-cheating. Very good.
3. The draft is f***ing amazing. It is done very very well. I'm not going to get into it too much. There's too much good to mention.
4. The lighting system is pretty good.
5. The pre-snap defensive adjustments are great. Really gives you alot of control over what you want to do. Sometimes not enough time to do everything, but it's still great.
Now, the bad....(hang on, it's a long ride)
1. The graphics are ugly. By far the ugliest madden ever, for it's time. (I'm not saying madden 95 looked better than this year's madden. But for it's time and graphical expectations, this is the ugliest madden ever.)
2. Storyline Central is the most disappointing "new addition" to a madden game ever. Sooooooo generic and unrealistic. It also makes no difference to your team, unless you let a chimp manage your roster.
3. The ratings are inflated. A team with all 80's at every position is a BAD team in madden 05. This also adversely affects the draft. What is the point of having such a great draft system, if you can't start ANY of the rookies, unless your team is complete s***. A waste of great programming.
4. Position battles have a certain charm, however, you can just go and start whoever you want anyways. Also, the player that won the job, then when I take him out, hardly ever complains. If they wanted to make storyline central and position battles relevant, they would have had every player that wins a job then loses it, absolutely fuming and demanding a change RIGHT AWAY.
5. Did I mention the game is ugly? How come my created running back, at 216 lbs., without touching any arm or body sizes, looks like a f***ing gorilla?
6. The hit stick is pointless. Unless you create a fumble, which has happened to me only once, and I hit a guy almost every third play with the hit stick, there's no momentum shift like the game claims. At least in ncaa, you can rattle a guy and get the crowd going. Madden? Nothing.
7. The commentary is pure trash. If madden is in fact leaving the series next year, then this is actually a GOOD thing for the game. I have never been more disappointed with the audio in a game as much as madden.
8. The RFA system, franchise tag, salary cap increases, and contract demands are ALL flawed. The RFA's, the computer never matches your offer, the franchise tag is useless cuz it never gets to that point where you need it, the cap increases have been a problem for years and this year is no different, and re-signing players for the lowest amount is too easy because of the interest meter and they already tell you upfront what the lowest amount is that they'll accept. Who negotiates by starting low and hoping to go high?
9. Did I miss something? Oh yeah, this is the ugliest sports game since High Heat Baseball. I don't think I can state enough times how brutal the graphics are.
10. They didn't touch owner's mode. At least a minor tweak here and there. But nothing. Bad, very bad
Stop posting that everywhere! I've seen it three times now, and all your problems with it are crap.

I just got done playing my first game, I got smoked by KC, but held Holmes to under 100 yrds. Trent Green is unstoppable on that game. Its alot harder then the last version, this is good. I think the graphics are fine, the kicking game is hard!

I gave it ten straight hours everyday for a whole week. I kept whoopin' teams on the hardest level. How real is that? I'm whoopin' on the New England Patriots 63-14, Baltimore Ravens 70-21. I never lost one game and my margin of victory is like 35. Rushing for 200 yards a game, passing for 300 to 400 yards a game. How realistic is that? Don't give us all this stuff about graphics and stuff. You couldn't even talk about gameplay to back up what you said. Anybody who says Madden NFL 2005 sucks just really don't have game.
You guys talk about how great ESPN NFL 2K5 graphics. How can you guys say that when the Player models look like the first year NFL Blitz came out for Nintendo 64. The helmets don't even look right. Look like boxes. They don't even have the right facemask for that particular Player. Keep y'all sucky ass ESPN NFL 2K5 and so on. If you wanna be a Baller, keep practicing on Madden NFL 2005 'cause amateurs play ESPN NFL 2K5.

I couldn't agree more. And Hearst is rated a lot higher then i expected. Hopefully they get some updates real soon. Anyone know when?
As far as Madden VS ESPN, i think Madden's gameplay is much better but i think that ESPN's special features with all the Sportcenter stuff is pretty tight. If you could combine the two it would be hella nice. But Madden gets my vote overall.

Open your mind to the fact that some people like ESPN more than Madden.. And what did I mispell?
I was trying to get across your grammar and I forgot to tag it on with the spelling, though you did say "cuz". Seriously, its not that hard to type all seven letters in "because".

I'll admit that Madden 2005 has the best football commercial ever. The one with Ray and he picks up the first yard line and moves it back... now that's what i call a GAMEBREAKER!
NFL Street... take notes cause your gamebreakers suck ass
Elway
08-12-2004, 10:11 PM
Both games are ok and have their pros and cons. I've played footballs games ever since John Elway came out on the NES. From there to Montanna, Madden with stops at NFL Fever and now ESPN. Madden has good features & Espn has different things. The controls are basically the same, So it depends on how well you like the diferent controlls on the defense and offense and the overall graphics and gameplay that you prefer.

Madden 2005 is amazing...The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is amazing, the defensive playmaker before the snap is amazing, the whole game is amazing...I love the defensive playmaker before the snap...I love how you can put your best DB on there best WR...The game IS the most realistic sports game that has ever been made...I cant get enough of it, unfortunetly my PS2 can, and it keeps cutting out on me after an hour or two of play...NCAA '05 is a WAAAY better than ESPN 2k5 also, that game is awesome too, but Madden is still better..LOL...I had a tournament with a few friends today and got 2nd..It was an 8 man tournament, and we didnt use the tournament setting thing we just made a bracket and went from there..But I won my first game against my friend who played with the Packers and won 35-15...Then I won my second game against my other friend who had the Bucs, and I won 32-21, then I lost to my freind that I had never lost to in Madden 04 before..LOL..He played with the Falcons and I lost 22-6..LOL..Ya I got killed, but we are going to play again tonight...LOL...Not that anyone really cares about anything like that but oh well..LOL...
My final assesment on Madden 2005-
ITS FREAKIN AWESOME!
