One thing that will help you run, especially with an agile back, is if you run a draw or lead play and you see the hole start to close at the LOS, TAP the juke button so you runner will cut it outside without losing any speed. I did this numerous times with Q and was able to post a 206 yard effort with him. Also, put your WR in motion to clearout the side of the field you are gonna run on. The WRs in Madden don't hold their blocks for very long at all, so just get them outta your way.

Y is it that whenever you run to the side you begin running like 10 times slower!! The linemen are faster than your backs!!! i hate that sh**!
I've only broken one big gain with Q!!!!!! I'm still trying to get him better but it seems like Priest Holmes is invinceable! But icant complain too much Because Champ is the man in that game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just miss running sweeps and stuff!

there's absolutely nothing better than vision. you can follow a blocker, but if you don't see a better hole elsewhere, you're probably screwed. you can know when to run but if they stop you, they stop you. you've got to be able to see the whole field, all the time.
next, is being able to get there. learn the physics of the game (or lack there of). don't hold turbo when turning and changing direction, it just slows you down. i've gotten this down to a science lol..once i actually did it so well i was running full speed, let go of turbo, tapped right, then kept going and the guy about 10 degrees to my right in front of me just stood there. not to boast, just making a point. if it's not natural already, well, it'll be hard to learn.
then there's the little things. knowing when to spin. it's still a little complicated, knowing how hard to spin, when, where, yadda yadda but i don't feel like explaining that. oh-don't use the full juke, it's worthless. if you're ever going to juke, lightly tap the button so you get the quicker animation that wastes less momentum.
the stiff arm should only be used when you have to use it. it's risky unless u time it perfectly..even then it's meh..
then there's the little glitches like running in little dipsy doodle circles, stuff like that.
other than that, it's just natural with some people. oh, i almost forgot. angles play a HUGE role in your running success. i've had a guarenteed 5-10 yards in front of me before the defender would catch me, but i've "banana'd", which is what i call it when i run in a banana shape as close to the defender as i can without touching him so i can cut back out and ruin the angle, and destroy any hopes of him catching up to me. there's times i cut it too close and get tackles for a gain of like, 2 yards and someone asks me "why the hell did you just run close to him when u didn't have to?" or "why did you follow your blocker so close when you could've ran out a little more and made sure u didn't get hit?"..then i bust a 40 yard run..over and over again and they understand. trust me, if you're good enough you can have people hating your running game because it makes their defense look stupid. if i could ever upload some saved replays or video tape some of my running drills i would, but i don't know how :(
then you should know when to press turbo again, how quick to press it, timing, stuff like that which is REALLY hard to explain.
i'm going mostly off of 2004, assuming nothing really serious has chaned.
I totally agree with everything. Its a little harder to do everything in 2005 because of the new defensive strengths, but for the most part it is the same.
For the most part it pans out like...
- Triangle (Cover Ball) makes you run the slowest, but you break tackles the best and fall foward most of the time.
- Holding nothing makes you run normally, where you have the best control over your direction (as Zack said).
- Turbo makes it very easy to be tackled, as you can't change direction easily at all, and defenders can take the proper angle to beat you.
To add to what Zack said...
- Use motion and audibles to create favorable blocking matchups.
If you are running off-tackle on the strong side, and the defense stacks all its defenders to that side, motion your wide out away from that side. The defense will commonly shift back to the middle, or sometimes all the way over. I was trying to do a power run off tackle, with Hearst, in a standard I formation against the Chiefs yesterday. They totally stacked the strong side, so I motioned Rod to the left. It was man so the CB followed, and the Dline and LBs both shifted all the way to the left. It was probably the easiest 60yd TD run I've ever had, as my RT and TE closed off the entire right side without any trouble.
- Play it like a Pro
Different types of runs are for different situations. If the Defense is standard, toss plays will not be as effective. The safeties will simply persue and block all lanes. If you have been running inside all game, however, safeties will sneak up, leaving the outside open for your speedy backs to do some serious damage. Don't run counter plays early because you have to set them up first. The defense will stack the side you like to play, so I'll run dives to the strong side for a while, and then run a quick counter to the weak side. A lot of the time you catch them with some good strategy.
- Substitute
I actually like running with the Broncos more now because it is more of a challenge. Portis isn't their do all, end all back, so I substitute to fit my needs. I use Hearst in standard dive plays, because he has the most strength. I like Griffin on third downs because of his speed and catching ability, and Bell for the times I want to switch it outside, or in Single back formations where I need to hit the holes quickly. Mike Anderson is the standard FB, but I make Droughns the FB and Anderson the HB in Goal Line formation because he has the most power.
