I'm opening up a thread on this board for the 5 people who like soccer.
The first Pool stage of the Champions League has been completed.
Biggest suprises....Real Madrid loses 3-0 to Bayern Leverkusen.
Roma match cancelled about half way through because ref was hit in the head with a lighter.

Please, i'm asking nicely...don't come in here just to say that you think soccer sucks. if you wanna do that, start a seperate thread or something. Thanks.:)

every week that champions league games are played, espn usually airs one of the better games (usually one of the two teams playing is either Real Madrid, Man U, Juve, Arsenal, etc.)
and all those champion league games are on tuesday and wednesday so they don't interfere with league matches.
They are showed live, so they are on at liek 2:30 our time on a tuesday or wednesday afternoon....are you at work by that time (i think you are...2-12 shift or something like that, right?)

It's like the Quiefs : great offense but nothing about "D"... and historically, Real always had troubles against german teams. But 3-0 is the surprise.
Yep, Zizou is out for 3 weeks (according to the lastest news).
French teams were not good... PSG was awful, Monaco was pityful against Liverpool... They didn't play... Lyon made a great game against Manchester and should have won... But Van Nystelroy was there and crushed Lyon... Too bad, but if they go on playing like that, there's hope for them.
The Roma affair is horrible.. I think they are in serious troubles. First I guess they will lose the game against Kiev and may be they can be excluded from all european cups ! We will know that tomorrow... I will inform you if you are interested.

Ukranian officials are demanding that Dynamo Kiev be giving points for the game against Roma that they were leading 1-0 at the time of postponement/cancellation whatever you wanna call it.

David Beckham got dropped over the weekend for the spanish league match. About time too he has been poor for club and country for ages. Michael Owen not looking too promising either. Liverpool is well rid of him. Liverpool rocked in the Champions League against Monaco. Go go!

hehe j/k.
My daughter loves soccer and I wanna learn more about it. I watched the USA woman win the gold and that's about the extent of my soccer viewing. So on Tue & Wed @ 14:30edt. I see Booher said soccer all day Saturday, do you know of any other day & times it's usually on? I wanna learn the rules & such before she comes and lives with my in June.

well, there really aren't all too many rules to soccer.
Yellow and red cards are handed out by the refs for more serious infractions.
Two yellow cards in one game equals an ejection, while one red card serves the same purpose.
I think offsides is the trickiest rule to comprehend...well, not really, but i think it's hardest to explain in words on the comp.
Maybe someone else will give it a try?

offsides in soccer is the trickiest thing to explain no matter how you try. once you get it though, it's really not that complex. i'd try but it'd all come out as drivel...

NJBRONCOSFAN
09-21-2004, 07:05 AM
yea, it's really not complicated at all, just hard to put into words...much easier to explain while watching a soccer game live or on t.v. with the person your trying to explain it to.

twotone
09-21-2004, 07:09 AM
say, is Ole Gunnar Solksjaer still around for Man U? I used to pay a lot of attention to soccer, but not so much anymore. I don't have ESPN or FSW so I never get to see any games.

NJBRONCOSFAN
09-21-2004, 07:13 AM
Yup...he's still on the team.
I don't get to watch much soccer either. We have an italian channel that shows one game every sunday afternoon...otherwise, i don't get to watch much either.
September 28th on espn or espn2 at 2:30 real madrid vs. roma...
that's the next game i'll be able to watch, but it should be a good one.

What do u think of Camacho getting the boot after just 3 months as Real Madrid's manager. Some say Sven Goran Eriksson's in line for the job. Hope he goes before the England v Wales world cup qualifying game - anything that throws the english off balance I'm all for! Go Wales

Arsenal really are an excellent team in the English Premiership. They're way above Man Utd in recent times. They're now unbeaten for more than 40 games and really know how to play the beautiful game. But their record in the Champions League has been dismal. Until they crack that they can't possibly be called the best in Europe.

Currently, it's "no"...
Real is paying its lats years recruitment : too many stars but no "team player"... All for offense, but no defense (the defender they take is currently out for some weeks)... Zidane, Ronaldo, Owens, Bechkam, Figo, Raul are all great players, but if you don't give them the ball, what can they do ? Plus, if you take more goals than you score, how can you win ? But I have to say Real is great to watch because there will always be many goals in the game ;) :D

Maybe someone else will give it a try? I will try :
You're offside only if you are in the part of the field of the other team and if you're behind the latest defender before the pass is kicking (the goalkeeper doesn't count). You have to imagine a virtual line made by the lastest defender on the field (like the goalline in football). If one of your player is behind this line BEFORE (it's important) the pass is kicking, he is offsides... Does that help ?
But it's a little more complicated than that : you are offsides if the pass was kicked towards you according the offsides rule, but you can also be offsides if the pass is not kicked towards you if the referee thinks you have an influence on the play. We call that "positional offsides"...
Well, I think it's really hard to explain without any examples...

Looking forward to both matches. Porto v Chelsea should be interesting with Chelsea's Mourinho (sp?) going against his former club. Personally I wouldn't mind too much if Chelsea got beat. Mourinho is really starting to get on everyone's nerves + they have way too much money to spend . He is SO arrogant and needs to lighten up. Roma v Real is intriguing. Haven't Roma just lost their manager too?
As a Liverpool supporter I'm also looking forward to their match against Olympiakos. I think finally they are showing some signs of improvent under Benitez's guidance (good riddance Gerrard Houllier) The new Spanish signings Alonso and Luis Garcia are beginning to make a difference.
Hope Arsenal do well too. They are now 47 games unbeaten - I think:)

Dull doesn't begin to cover it, I was really hoping for at least a draw. At least Deportivo lost to Monaco, unless they conjure up a comeback of Elway-ian proportions they're pretty well out of it. The annoying thing was that olympiakos didn't really threaten that much, we just looked like QG on Sunday night!

Otherwise there is a full domestic schedule this weekend, followed by a 'double header' International break for European World Cup Qualifiers, playing next Saturday & Wednesday.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is qualification going for the US? You were seriously impressive in Japorea, and it scares me what you lot could do maybe 10 years down the line, if & when you start to take soccer seriously.

We've got the little matter of a qualification derby next week, England play Wales for the first time since I dunno when.

I'm just watching the highlights of today's English Premiership matches, if you get a chance you've got to see Thierry Henry's 1st goal against Charlton. It's the most impudent, cheeky goal I've seen in ages, I want to loathe Henry, but the bloke's from a different planet at the moment. Arsenal are now unbeaten in 48 league games, stretching back to 2003! Thankfully, they're still
$h!t in Europe, otherwise they would be seriously annoying.

At least he didn't recover in time to add to the Monday Night debacle the other week! To be honest though, he's a great talent, but I'm not sure about his mentality, he could just as easily become the new Gazza as the new Pele. BTW, when was the last time England & Wales played a meaningful match?

I'd say that both the Milan sides are as good as through to the knockout stages, along with Juve. Roma are going to have a real stuggle though, having to win their remaining games and needing other results to go in their favour.

Next round of matches in a fortnight.

I was going to say the same exact thing...it does not look good for Roma, but the other three are getting the job done.

so, to you, what are the biggest suprises?
I thought depor. would show stronger than this.
Porto is a bit of a suprise considering their success last year IMO.
Group 2 is also a suprise to me. Roma at the bottom with 0 points, Kiev on top because of goal differential.

The latest matches have been completed!

Final CSKA Moscow 0-1 Chelsea
Lokomotiv Stadium
Final Arsenal 1-1 Panathinaikos
Highbury
Final Barcelona 2-1 AC Milan
Camp Nou
Final Celtic 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
Celtic Park
Final FC Porto 0-0 PSG
Estadio do Dragao
Final Inter Milan 0-0 Valencia

AC Milan lost in what I heard was a fantastic match! I wish I could see it :(
Inter pulled out only a draw at home, but looks good for them regardless.

Chelsea in to the next round and Juve has a chance to do the same tomorrow.

Yup! Let's hope Liverpool can do the biz tonight - especially after Djibril Cisse's horrible injury over the weekend. Did u see his shin snap in half - sickening! They'll have to play a lot better to get a result tonight though. Yet again Arsenal slip up after taking the lead and finish with a draw - what is it with them and the Champions League? They are not the same team at all in Europe as they are domestically!

That has to be the worst break I've seen since Tim Krumrie did his leg in the turf against the 49ers in the SB. I've seen somewhere that it's going to be at least two months before they can put any sort of timescale on his recovery and maybe & 10% chance that it's a career ender. I think the key tonight has to be not losing the game, a draw won't be a bad result.

Our team tonight is: Kirkland, Josemi, Carra, Traore, Garcia, Biscan, Hamman, Riise, Kewell & Baros. At least Rafa's gotten past his fixation with Diao. Alonso is on the bench, nursing a strained thigh.

Kiev are going great guns at the moment, and are a pretty suprising package. I wonder if the weather is having anything to do with it. The Moscow - Chelsea game last night started 2 1/4 hours before the rest for that reason.

Looking at the standings for each group and remaining fixtures who do u think are the teams most likely to make it through to the next phase?

Group A - a three horse race between Olympiakos, Liverpool and Monaco. I think Olympiakos will win their next fixture agains Deportivo and Liverpool and Monaco will get a draw. This will put O in a strong place to qualify and so it's a toss up between Liv and Mon for the remaining place. As a faithful red I will go with Liverpool.

Group B - Again an interesting three horse race between Dynamo, Leverkusen and Real. I think Real will win their remaining 2 fixtures (against Leverkusen and Roma) which will take them through and I will go with Dynamo for the other spot.

Group C - Who will join Juve? Bayern should win their next game against Maccabi so this should make them favourites to follow Juve into the next stage.

Group D - Although it would be gr8 to see Manure falter I can't see it happening and we should see Manchester progress through quite easily to join Lyon.

As for groups E through to F groups F and G look pretty much decided with Inter already qualifying and Barca, Milan and Werder Bremen in strong positions.
Group G sees Chelsea already through with a tight race between PSG and CSKA Moscow to come and Group E probably seeing Arsenal go through to join PSV.

Ok I'll go with

Group A: Olympiakos & Liverpool. I'm relatively confident that Depor will pick up a result of some type in the remaining two games. I'm a bit worried about our (Liverpool's) lack of strikers at the moment.

Group B: Real Madrid & Bayer Leverkusen. Real will leap frog either Leverkusen or Kiev as they play the final match.

Group C: Juve already through with Munich to join them tonight.

Group D: Lyon have already qualified, so I think they'll maybe ease up a bit tonight & Manure get the result that they need to go through, a draw being good enough.

Group E:Panathanikos & Arsenal. Panathanikos to sneek through by beating PSV in the final group game.

Group F: AC Milan & Barcelona both to go through, quite probably tonight.

Group G: Werder Bremen & Inter Milan both to go through, possibly with a draw tomorrow night.

Group H: Chelseas already through, and it doesn't really matter about the rest. CSKA will probably sneak in on the basis that they've already lost to Chelsea twice.

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE

Liverpool fan for nearly 30 years now, god am I really that old?

I'm just getting a bit sick of the bad luck we seem to be having at the moment. Considering we're not halfway through the season yet, that was the fifth goal that was either incorrectly allowed, or disallowed this season. On top of that, the injuries, so far this year we've lost Gerrard for 6 weeks, Cisse for 6-10 months, Baros for 6-8 weeks, Garcia for a month, Nunez has been out since August & Traore & Josemi are both out for at least the next 10 days.

I think Rafa must have smashed a mirror when he kicked a black cat from under a ladder.

How good is Cisse? We've not really seen anything of him yet, he was still adapting to the English game when he broke his leg.

As for Houllier, I''ve got a lot of respect for the guy, but he probably should have gone at the end of the 2002 season. He had us going well until his heart surgery, and never really seemed the same after that. It was definitely past time for a change.

I think we'll go through in a fortnight against the Greeks, they're notoriously poor travellers. Hopefully I'll be able to get a ticket for the game :D

Big problem with Morientes is that he'll be cup-tied in European games. I'd like to see us sign him as a long term addition, but we'll have to bring someone eligible for Europe in, possibly a on a loan deal til the end of the season.

Other names I keep hearing crop up are Villa of Zaragosa (I think) & believe it or not Nicolas Anelka keeps getting a mention, both for about the same price as Morientes.

Did you hear that Nunez got a 60 minute run out for the reserves last night? Supposedly looked quite sharp & could well have played himself into contention for the Arse game on Sunday. He says he's more of a second striker than a winger, and I thought on Tuesday we could have possibly got something out of the game if Mellor had had a bit more support from midfield.

BTW, Welsh, have you heard about these talks for next week about a groundshare with the Blue$h!te? My head says that it probably makes sense, but since when has rationality had anything to do with supporting a football club?

Well half wrong anyway! Man, I'm still buzzing from that, I though we were brown bread at halftime. What a performance! What a result!

Through to the knockout stages as winners: Monaco, Beyer Leverkusen, Juventus, Lyon, Arsenal, AC Milan, Inter Milan & Chelsea.

Through to the knockout stages as runner ups: Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manure, PSV, Barcelona, Werder Bremen & FC Porto.

Thrid place sides go into the draw for the next round of the UEFA Cup, fourth place sides go home.

The draw is next Friday (17th), and is from two pots, 1st place teams against 2nd place, with the 1st place team playing the 2nd leg at home. Teams cannot be drawn against the team they qualified with, or teams from the same national association.

For Example, as runners up, Liverpool cannot play Monaco (Qualified from the same group) or Arsenal/Chelsea (same national association).

Therefore NJ, Liverpool sand a 60% chance of being drawn against one of your sides, as we can only be drawn against Juventus, AC, Inter, Leverkusen or Lyon. I think the CL begins again in Feb.

I'm a footie (soccer for you backwards folks) fanatic, but the CL just plain bores me most of the time. Watered out the concept, since 70 % of the teams aren't even champions, and the Ueaf cup has become a joke, because of the aforementioned plus the fact that 3rd placed teams from the group stages of the CL are transferred to the final stages of the UEFA Cup. A lot of matches are so tactically minded, it's boring, one look at Juve will tell you that. Teams fielding Youth/reserve squads because they're already through or out (most recently Man U and Roma) in games that decides the fate of other teams. Uefa making sure only big country clubs go through to the group stage, by making the qualification system as it is, several teams from the big countries automatically qualify for the group stage, while some countries only get one team in, and that in the first of 3 qualification rounds. All to eliminate the upsets that are bound to happen making sure only the Barcas, Milans and Man Us of footie are left at the end. Danish no-names OB knocked out Real Madrid 10 years ago with the old tournament, B1903 knocked out Bayern Munich (winning 6-2 at home), Brøndby was becoming a force, going all the way to the semis of the UEFA and the quarters another year (losing on a Voeller goal in injury time) knocking out several top German teams on the way, knocked out Liverpool one of those glory years too. Even with this new formate teams from smaller leagues are making upsets (FCK beating Ajax and outperforming Chelsea and Glasgow in recent years), Brøndby beating Bayern Munich the year they did make it to the group stage, some Swedish team (think it was Helsingborg) knocked out Inter a few years back, Djurgården drew Juve in Italy this year. But hey, no wonder you have 90 % big league teams at the end now, try letting them play 3 knock-out phases before even making the tournament and see how theyll fare.

Of course I'm not advocating that all leagues should qualify an equal amount of teams, but once they're qualified they should certainly be on equal terms, and no way should countries qualify 4 teams for the CL (possibly 5 with reigning champions). UEFA's motives are obvious, big name clubs draw world-wide attention and that of people who aren't really passionate about the sport, which is more important than the best teams actually playing. For passionate fans, it's bollocks. I really don't give much of a **** about the CL these days. Bring on the local leagues instead, they're fair and actually about footie.

I can sort of agree with you, especially since my mighty reds won the old tournament 4 times, & I agree that the current system is unfair towards the smaller nations. I've been to 2 of Liverpool's group games this year, & it was only on Wednesday night that we had a really good 'Old Anfield' atmosphere. But that been said, in the premiership it is essential for clubs to qualify for the Champions League, even more so since Abramovitch arrived at Chelsea and hugely re-inflated the transfer market.
Certainly from Liverpool's perspective we have to qualify for the Champions league to stand any chance of making up ground on Arsenal, Chelsea & Manure, therefore hopefully enabling us to challenge for the domestic title withing the next year or two.
To be honest, I think the Champions League is a compromise situation. The G14 clubs would probably prefer to have an invitation only European Super League, but the fans still want to play their traditional rivals & derby matches, which just wouldn't be possible with a Super League.
Unfotunately, the practice of fielding understrength sides is permeating the English domestic game, and my club are as guilty as anyone else. I suppose the counter to that argument though, it that each club names a squad of 25 players plus an additional number (12 I think) of youth players, and anybody that's good enough to make it into the squad is considered to be good enough to play in the tournament.
At least UEFA have started to listen to what the fans want though, the tournament has now been cut down to a single group stage, that thing of having to sets of group stages was a complete joke. I'm not sure, but I think this may also be the last year in which the 3rd placed teams are parachuted into the UEFA cup.

You know, I don't think any french team can win the CL. Because of money. Monaco last year was a real surprise. If you apply the french rules about money, many teams (from Italy and Spain especially) couldn't even play in the first league. Madrid, Milan, they can spend many more money than they could have.
That's a reason why I like the NFL rules (about salary cap for example)...

Anyway, Lille, my hometown, is making a good UEFA cup despiste a lack of money... Sometimes, work and good strategies can make you win... There is some hope, though I don't think they could win the UEFA cup...

Draw was made this morning for the next round, I quite like Inter's chances of progressing & I think Juventus can turn Real over, and I'm going to pray for AC Milan turning Manure over.

Pretty good draw for Liverpool, I'd have taken either Bayer or Lyon out of the clubs we could have met. The other 3 ties are probably too close to call.

Last year, the draw made at this stage was the only draw, and if that applies this year there is a chance of all English, Italian, German or French finals.

Full Champions League draw:

Real Madrid v Juventus
FC Porto v Inter Milan
Barcelona v Chelsea
Werder Bremen v Lyon
Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen
PSV v Monaco
Manchester United v AC Milan
Bayern Munich v Arsenal

The first leg matches will be played on 22/23 February and the return ties are on 8/9 March.

Do you like the draw, or could it have been kinder to your club?

I believe that this is a PG rated board, so obviously some of the names can't be repeated ;)

Since they were bought by Abramovich, some papers have taken to calling Chelsea Chelski, although most fans would probably change the 'k' to a 'h' and add a 't' on the end

I suppose the most prominent other one would be Wayne Rooney being Shrek. although you can call Rio Ferdinand anything that you want as he'll forget, like he forgot to take his drug test.

If I remember anymore clean(ish) one I'll add them.

Hopefully I'll be going, I qualified & I'm just waiting to find out.

Morientes is a fantastic signing, especially for only 0.5mil mor than the BS spent on Beattie, it's just a shame that he's cup tied.

As for Owen, I'm not sure. I didn;t like the way either he or the club dealt with his contract situation, yet who can blame anyone for wanting to try Madrid? Hopefully, if or when he comes back, it'll be much like the Ian Rush situation of 20 years ago, and he'll just keep banging them in.

I hope I'm wrong and there are plenty of goals for Liverpool of course! The Juve v Real fixture also looks v tasty and I'll be flicking channels now and then to keep an eye on that too.
Tommorow night I look forward to the Barca v Chelski game v much. The Milan v Man U game looks good too. Plenty of goals for Milan please!
I'm worried alil about the Juve and Milan games.

Juve will be without Nedved, while Real was able to rest Figo, Carlos, Zidane this week.

And for Milan, Shevchenko will not be playing, while it looks as if Nistelrooy will.

It is really hard to predict the Juve v Madrid game. Madrid were really poor over the weekend then again as u say they did not field a full strength team. Although Milan are gr8 Manure have shown some good form recently and it could be really close.

I'd agree that our game looks like it should be a tight one tonight, the most important thing IMO is keeping a clean sheet, we can't afford to have to chase the game over there.

I think Bayern should gain a slim advantage over Arsenal, much as I hate to say it. If the Gunners can get an anyway goal, I'd fancy them to win the tie at home.

PSV against Monaco, I've got to admit I don't know anything about the dutch side, so I'll have to give Monaco the egde, but maybe Frenchfan will know better.

Real vs Juventus, well I've got a coin here anyone wnat to call it?

BTW, WelshBronco, I've just recieved my ticket for the final on sunday.

But Real was attacking from the on-set, they deserved the victory it seems.

We've got lucky there, our 'biggest' player, Gerrard is was suspended for this game, he'll be back in a fortnight and we have no new injury or suspension worries, where as at least two or 3 of their players will miss the second leg. Any word yet on Nedved's injury?

As for your second, I think you'll probably have to score 3 to go through, I just can't see Real not scoring when they really need to.

Real won, and I think Juve is in trouble now... They can't win in Calcio... But Juve is the kind of team Real doesn't like... It's 60-40 for Real...

I think Lyon is the fav, but Breme is a tough team, with some good players (Micoud... a frenchie of course.. LOL) and a very strong offense...

My point is that at this stage, any teams can win... There is no "bad" team... Only good teams are there, but now, some are much more tired than others... What's the team's health is the question...

It was a mistake by the Man U. goalkeeper and Crespo punched it in...he really had no other choice but to score as he was right there.

You're lucky, about a month or so ago Manure were playing Spurs in the league and Spurs put the ball a good two yards over the line before Carroll clawed it out, and the goal wasn't given! Did you know that only 2!!! penalties have been scored against Manure in the League in nearly 12 years! They've really got the luck of the devil at times.

I like Rugby too, especially the 6 nations tournament and the world cup... But I won't say I'm a good analyst about rugby ...
This year I think France was lucky... We played badly but we won against Scotland and England... It was a surprise because I thought England were better than us currently (we had a lot of injured players and we don't find our game... I mean, France is well knowned to play a kind of rugby and we were not able to do it).... Now, Wales won 2 in a row and I think it's a very good team... I've got a lot of respect for this team. It will be tough for the frenchies... We have to play really better than the 2 previous game if we want to beat Wales... Ireland is good too currently...
Now I think if we are able to play like we played Australia some months ago, we can beat Wales and Ireland... But we also can play like we played against Argentina and New Zealand... And if so, I think Wales or Ireland will win the tournament...

Six nations and World cup is when I enjoy rugby most too. I don't follow club rugby that much unless a welsh club happens to bo doing well in the Heineken Cup competition(which sadly is not the case this year).
I think the France v Wales game is a hard one to call. We were over the moon about beating England (hehe) and grateful to France for doing the same. But facing the strong French forwards and playing away is going to be very tough. Let's hope it's an entertaining open game.

Thanks for the good wishes, it should be a good game. At least we won't be 'walking through a storm' as the roof's going to be closed on Sunday, which will be a first for me. Maybe NJ can give me a tip or two about indoor games!

As for the 'Six' Nations, I still can't get used to it. I used to really love rugby, maybe even more than soccer, but I just can't get used to playing Italy every year. While I wouldn't quite go as far as to say England are a one-man team, if Johnny Wilkinson had been handling the kicking duties then I think the result may have been a bit different. Realistically speaking though, England are not the same team that won the world cup, a lot of the team have now retired especially from the pack, and they especially miss Martin Johnson, he could single handedly drag the team kicking and screaming to the desire result. Hopefully we're concentrating on rebuilding the side to defend our title.

Unfortunately our luck ran out! Liverpool did well to hang on after that 1st minute goal by Riise but then Chelsea had to get lucky with Stevie G's own goal. Goals by Drogba and Kezman in extra time finished us off. I thought there was a glimmer of hope when Nunez struck back with about 8 mins to go but it was not to be. I dunno! Before the 6 nations began I think a million to one would have been fair odds! I'm a bit nervous about the Wales game against Scotland. I hope that doesn't prove to be a banana skin. As for England getting the wooden spoon - no way! They can't possibly lose to Italy - can they?!
Brilliant about the travelling Kop getting the record for being the noisiest. I'd seen on the welsh news they were planning to measure the noise levels of both sets of fans. I knew Chelski had no hope noise wise just a pity we couldn't just do it goal wise as well!

Even at the end, the rendition of YNWA when the team came over to the 'Kop' was drowning out the cockneys. :D

We had a great day, just a shame about the result.

Merci beaucoup Frenchie! The French were excellent in the 1st half yes. How is the country reacting to losing but playing beautifully? We in Wales have had plenty of experience of that over the past few years!
Grrr . . . Chelski! You're welcome... Well, we are disapointed about this game, but proud to made (and saw) a great game... Wales was just better and took their chance when we let Welsh team playing... There is no shame ... just disapointment... I know Wales weren't very lucky these past years... Now it's your turn... Nothing wrong about that...
Sports are just games... And sometimes, even when you lose, you are winners... French team was applaused after the game vs Wales despite the fact we lose... It was not the same after our victory against Scotland... So... I hope you understand what I mean...

Talking about Chelski ? Well, I really hate the coach... He was crying after the loose at Barcelona... I heard he was put out of the game against the Reds ? What's happened ?
I'm really sad this team lead teh First League... Not for the players, but I can't stand the coach's attitude... He is not fair !

It's good that the French team were applaudaded after such a performance. According to the media over here Bernard Laporte is not very popular with the supporters and some even speculating his job may be at risk.
You are right that Mourinho is not one ot the nicer managers in football. He is incredibly arrogant. He was sent off for gesturing to the crowd after Chelski equalized with Stevie G's own goal. He turned to the crowd with his finger to his lips as if trying to shush them and sort of sending the message "that'l shut u up!". There was also an incident before that where he was shouting abuse at Jamie Carragher from the touchline telling him to "f*** off". So I think the sending off was an accumulation of both incident really.

I've got to admit that I quite like Moaninho. I loved it last year when danced a jig down the touch line at Castle Greyskull when Porto beat the Munsters, so I can't really complain about what he did on Sunday. He has done himself some harm though in the last few weeks, the one that really annoyed me was his gesticulating & complaining to the officials over Deco's diving. I wonder where he learnt that trick?

I do think he was bang out of order shouting abuse at Carra, that being said he's either incredibly brave (or dumb) 'cause Carra would chew him up without breaking a sweat!

It seems that it was actually the police, not the match officials, that told Moaninho to leave the pitch, although the 4th official is saying today that he was going to ask Bennet to send him off anyway.

And no, my voice still isn't right!

He definitely is entertaining! You either love him or hate him I think. I couldn't stand him at the beginning of the season now I'm not so sure. He's not as sweet as old Ranieri though (poor thing). I loved his silly laugh!

Just showed what a freak show Chelski are. Ranieri was fantastic last season, and conducted himself with a great deal of dignity. Even though he's got the boot from Valencia, he's too good a person to be messed around by Chelsea.

Another big round of matches tonight!!!

AC Milan vs. Man.....Van Nistelrooy should be in much better shape now then last time these two played...how has he done in the premiership in between?

Neville and Saha have been ruled out for Man. U.
Jaap Stam should be back to bolster a strong Milan defence. (Maldini's, Nesta, Stam, Cafu)...however, i hear that a lot is being made of Manure's coem from behind victory in the second leg a few years ago against Juve in the delle alpi....I think that was a one time thing. We'll see.

Lyon will be hard-pressed NOT to make it on to the next round.

Barca and Chelsea should be interesting, no? I've heard that the barca coach was complaining in regards to the umpire for the game?

To be honest I'm not sure how van Diverboy's being doing since he came back, all I know is that he hasn't scored against two of the weakest teams in the Prem . Rooney scored twice a week ago in a 2-1 win for them, but they only managed a 0-0 thisweekend. I've got to go with an Italian defence there. (BTW I notice you're slipping into ABU speak there  )

I'd agree whole heartedly about Lyon, since they're at home they can't even get lost on the way to the ground.

This whole row between Chelski & Barca's getting a bit annoying to be honest. Moaninhio said he saw Rjikard (sp) going into the ref's room at h/t in the 1st leg, which is a no-no. Drogba then got sent off, cue another Portuguese whine. Then he accuses Barca's players of diving, well guess who Deco learnt that trick under?
Yup, he picked up his bad habits at Porto. Now who was their manager last year?

Another night of big games. To go through -

Arsenal 1-3 Bayern: Sorry Gunners, but I just can't see them keeping a clean sheet against the Germans.

Monaco 0-1 PSV: Typical tactical European game, 1-0 on the night and overtime.

Juventus 0-1 Real Madrid: Real to go through, possibly on away goals.

Leverkusen 1 - 3 Liverpool: Purely depends on who scores first. If Beyer get an early goal, I think Liverpool's lack of options will cost them. If Liverpool get keep it to 0-0 by halftime, I think we'll go through.

Off to get some supplies ( ), catch you later

Good on Rafa! When's the draw for the next stage?

Draw's a week on Friday, as far as I know there's no seeding, it's just a straight draw.
The draw has been put back a week because the Inter vs Porto is being played next week, because UEFA didn't want 2 games on consecutive nights on the San Siro pitch.

Call me stupid, but why didn't they just change the order of the legs for one of the games?

And what a win for Chelsea!Lyon played a great game ! Amazing, wonderful !!

I have to say that the 4th goal of Chelski is not good : there is a holding on Barcelona's goalkeeper... But Barça collapsed himself because of their really bad beginning of the game !

Arsenal... grrr !!! With couldn't they score anotehr goal ???

Milan and Juve... Thanks Trezegoal for Juve...

Monaco wasn't able to play a physical and tactical PSV ... A team that is really hard to play IMO.

The Reds !!! yeahhh...

Hey, you, rugby fans, waht do u think of the French victory in Ireland ?
Wales played really good against Scotland... I think they 'll win the 6 Nations... I think they'll beat Ireland next week...
Wales have a good team with a good D... They defeat us in Paris (now I'm angry about those 10 minutes while French team didn't play well.. LOL)...

What's your pick ?

The Champions League next stage should be really interesting. I can't wait for the draw. I'm grateful to France for beating Ireland and helping Wales on their way. :D I really didn't expect Wales to beat Scotland so easily as we've always struggled at Murrayfield in the past. I think next weekends games should be very interesting and the game between Ireland and Wales very hard fought. I've no idea which way that game will go. Is it Italy that France play next? I can understand you being angry with France Frenchie. At time their play has been scintillating (the best in the tournament) but they have also been too inconsistent.

First things first, Inter have to play Porto to complete the lineup tomorrow night. One all from the first leg, with Inter having the advantage of the away goal. Who do you think will go through, and who would you prefer to get in the draw? Personally I'd like Porto to go through (sorry NJ :D ), and then we get either Porto or PSV in the quarters. I don't want AC, Chelski or Lyon.

Any preferences?

As a long time Bayern fan I have to say that my boys along with AC Milan and Chelsea look to be the strongest side left in the pool. If we avoid one of these two, I feel VERY confident that we'll reach the next phase. If though by chance we draw one of those two I'd have to put our chances at 50/50. I would also like to see PSV do well because Beasley plays there - he even nabbed a goal in the second leg of their tie vs Monaco. That's stellar that we have a player scoring and playing like a world class player on the biggest stage for club soccer in the world - this bodes very well for the Nats.

Forza Bayern
