According to a team source, the accident involved an electric fence surrounding a swimming pool at Rivera's home. Two people, believed to be members of Rivera's wife's family, were killed when they were electrocuted.

Relatives of Rivera's family told The Associated Press that the two people were a cousin of Rivera's wife and his 14-year-old son. The teenager appeared to have touched an electric wire while cleaning the pool, while his father died trying to save him.

sad sad event.

Why would you have an electric fence near a pool?

i've been shocked by a fence designed to keep cows in. it hurt, but wouldn't have killed me.

i've got a feeling a fence maker is about to get sued for a faulty product.

Vulcan

It wasn't faulty, it was doing the job it was set out to do. It's the consumer's idiotic move to place it near a pool.

i can think of about 10 better places to put an electric fence....but i wont go there

i'm no electrician, but why would being in water increase the power of the shock. i mean, if you drop an appliance into a tub you are getting the full shock from the outlet - but that can kill you whether or not you are in water.

i don't know about that - i've got a feeling that electrical fences that can kill people are illegal - just like having a trap on your property is illegal (a gun set up to fire when a door is opened for instance).

I have trouble having sympathy for people who die because of their stupid decisions. Who puts an electric fence within touching distance of a swimming pool? Hopefully, Rivera stays in Panama for about two weeks, then the Red Sox can finally go to the World Series.

As far as this electric fence around the pool...I don't know too much about it, but I do know we're talking about Panama....it's not quite as safe probably as the pool you have in your backyard...there are probably a lot more theives, etc. around, hence the need for more security...IDK.

FAT CHANCE! Rivera WILL be ready for the championship series.
You can keep your fingers crossed though....

that's sick how ppl could do that. you'd think in little countrys like those they'd celibrate and honor the ones that make it to the bigs.

yeah i've heard about that. hell, i'd have a fence like that too if i was in a place like that. although it wouldn't be close to the pool.

I totally agree, however, while reading over the article on espn.com, I don't see any mention of a fence...it just says the child "apparently touched an electrical wire while tending to the pool" ....still no reason for something like this to be around the pool, but we clearly don't know all the facts.

Could've been anything really. The light in the pool, an elec. cord. Too bad. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and the family..

Mariano Rivera...he's the closer for the NY Yankees...one of the best of all-time, and probably the best reliever in playoff history...definitely the best since I've been alive.

Not to hijack your thread there Bro, but you ever hear of a HOFer named Dennis Eckersly? He was the best Ive seen so far. Played for the freakin A's tho... Gibson took him deep in a WS one year, Im sure youve seen the highlight..

Yea, i've heard of Dennis Eckersly...of course...even won the Cy Young one year if memory serves me correctly. He was definitely a good one, but Mariano has the good fortune to play for the team that's always going far into the playoffs.

but regardless, he gets it done.
First all-time in W.S. saves with 9...Eckersly doesn't even have 3.
Number 10 all-time in W.S. Era with at 1.16 in 31.0 innings
Eckersly has given up 3 runs in 4 2/3 innings in the W.S.

Rivera has 17 saves in the W.S. and ALCS (30 if you include ALDS)
Eckersly has 15.
so there!:cheeky: :D

Uh-huh your almost as good as spinning things in your favor as raider fan. ;) Since you went to all the trouble why not post all the #s then? I mean Eckersly is hardly my favorite player (did i mention he played for the oakland A's), but he didnt exactly kiss the sports writers ass's to get elected to the HOF did he?

NJBRONCOSFAN
10-12-2004, 08:55 AM
What other numbers would you like?
World Series ERA - Rivera, 1.16
Eckersly, somewhere around 6.

Just a quick comment or two - First it was in Panama and no details have been release so to say there shouldnt be any sympathy for their stupidty is lame - accidents happen every day here in America - it doesnt mean you cant feel sorry for someone when they or a family member dies in one

Next - Mariano IS the best reliever in the history of baseball - PERIOD for years he was unhittable - save the last couple years - when he came in you KNEW the game was over

THe basbeball world has been hit by a double tragedy this weekend with this and Camenetti

My prayers are with everyone

Sorry to break it to you OB, but that's still the case...when Mariano blows a save, it's usually because the hitter was lucky enough to hit a lil bloop (i.e.- Luis Gonzalez).
SO YOUR WRONG!;)

Via private jet, expected to be in NY for *1 tonight. Can already see how this plays out: If he pitches poorly, the trip gets the blame; if he pitches well, it's a mystique-builder.

OK homer - Wake up and smell the coffee - Mariano has lost the "edge" he once had - at one point in his career it was a given when he came in the game was over - today its just not like that - so :cheeky:

And I didnt take off yesterday cause of Columbus day (they dont celebrate that in Oklahomer ) its cause i was/am sick :(
