So, in 1972, after missing Alice Cooper and the next week Led Zeppelin, I swore I was going to the next concert. I did. My first concert was David Gates and Bread ( Baby I'm a want you!) It would have been a footnote in history, but the opening act was the only time Steely Dan toured, back in the day! Good save, huh? Steely Dan was the first band I saw live at the Denver coliseum in 1972..... Best concert I ever saw, I was a junior in high school, 1973, billed as the last show ever at the Coliseum because they were opening Mcnichols Arena the next week, and the best concert I ever saw was when I had the pleasure of seeing Pink Floyd do Dark Side of the Moon! I am sure I will write a post about it later. The following week, I saw ZZ TOP open McNichols. hey, dudes and dudettes... share your first best and whatevers. Live music is awesome and uplifting. Brings out the tribal in us all.

first concert....hmm....well the first one that i intended to see anyways was switchfoot/earshot. It was at the Louisville Cardinals stadium..i probably wouldn't have gone, but it was free, i was bored, and 2 of my friends and a really hot guy were going, so i couldn't pass it up...lol it was like..in...ummmmmm i wanna say august but im not sure
ive been to other concerts, but not by choice..when i was younger i was forced to go to country concerts :cheeky: and on the fourth of july this year, the fireworks show i was at on the ohio river, Al green was there...not really sure who he was, but i hear he's somewhat famous. and there were drunk people dancing so it was great...an i cant really think of any other. but so far, switchfoot/earshot were the best (i preferred earshot)

 rock chick

First was the Up In Smoke Tour with Dre, Snoop, Eminem, Ice Cube, Xzibit and Co. in Milwaukee. I believe that was 2000.
It was definately the best too. Otherwise Outkast with Ludacris at the Rave in Milwaukee.

got out of the service (66-69) and my first concert was in the summer of 69. i had a chance to go to some arts and crafts fair in new york, but i told the other guys " i don't want to go to no friggin' arts and crafts fair"--- turned out to be woodstock, but i'm still glad i didn't go. we did take a ride up to a little town on the coast of maine and went to a concert at a civic center that was right on the beach. there were 2 shows, we went to the second one. the band kept jamming all night long into the early hours of the morning. they said during the show that they were going to miss their flight, but didn't care and kept on playing. i will never forget that night. i had never heard of that band before, and this show was the very first USA public appearance as they began thier USA tour, promoting thier first album simply named LED ZEPPELIN. thier first album is still my favorite, although now i have it on a digitally re-mastered cd. it still kicks.

Cool! Didn't they close McNichols also?

Wow! I don't think anyone can top that in my book......

For me first concert was Aerosmith and Guns-n-Roses in '87 I believe at Sandstone in KC. GNR blew Aerosmith away. What a great band they were.

I did not want to go overboard... but here goes. I sat in the 13th row, 13th seat, on the left side of the floor, that first show. Commander cody and his lost planet airmen, then flash caddilac and the continental kids, and the headliner was ZZ TOP and damned if they didn't have frigging longhorn steers on stage with 'em! Many years later, when they closed Big Mac down, the final show was ZZTOP! My buddy from highschool, who I sat next to the first time, we both took our wives and SHUT IT DOWN! We opened it, and closed it! What, 1975 to 2002? Funny thing is, that pink Floyd show was billed as the last concert at the Coliseum, but the Coliseum keeps going strong. ---Right after that, we got to see Commander Cody at a dive bar, he was playing the has been circuit, I loved it. I bought him a cheeseburger, and told him "Dude you were awesome in 1975. You remember when you opened McNichols Sports Arena for ZZ TOP? You were the first band to ever play there 'cause you opened! " God Bless him, the Commander looked at me and his eyes were tearing up, and he said" I did?" The dude burned a few brain cells along the way, since he wrote "Son, you gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln"
I told him "Yeah. You did" I then told him all about it and he slapped my back. It was a good night.

The reason I inquire, about your first and best concert experience, is because there is your challenge. Describe it to us as if we all are your siblings. Describe your story, as if I am your brother, and the other 20 million people are your sister(s). Tell your real, honest to god tale of hap and circumstance, get down to the nitty gritty, brother!. Pearl Jam releases thier concerts on an official bootleg CD. The 2 CD's come in plain cardboard case, and there seems to be about 50-60 of them released.

Having come of age in the 90's, yet weaned on the Beatles, Zep, Floyd, The Clash, PE and the like, I resisted the grunge culture, and had only a passing interest in this grunge poster-child band called Pearl Jam.

Out of curiosity, I purchased one of these bootlegged CD's, half to see what it sounded like, and half to see what galls a band to release a CD per concert.

Well, I was impressed. This band enjoys what they do, are extremely skilled, and know how to really play music. I have since purchased 16 more of these live CD's and have yet to be disappointed.

I've been to over a hundred shows, I spent 6 years singing for a band, and have seen pretty much everything, 'till Pearl Jam came to town last month.

They were playing their 3rd show in 4 nights, were quite obviously disturbed by the devastation in New Orleans, and started the night on an unenthusiastic note.

The crowd was having none of it. Within 3 songs, the entire stadium was rocking along and the band noticed. They picked up the energy level, and really started to let it go. By the end of the set, 17,000 people had raised the level of the show to a deafening roar that the band was competing against.

They played 2-30 minute encores and were reluctant to get off the stage, their spirits clearly having been lifted by the amazing crowd response. They played Neil Young's "Rockin in the Free World" to this Canadian audience and practically had the roof lifting off the girders. That night they converted thousands of people to the church of PJ. I am one.

If they ever come to your town, and you truly enjoy quality musicianship and amazing performance, you have got to see Pearl Jam. You won't be disappointed.

my first concert, to the best of my recollection, was Metallica. it was the tour supporting the Black album. me and my buddy went and had seats up in the nose bleeds but the show kicked asp. seeing 'one' performed live was something special.

a couple honorable mentions first:

the white stripes. actually seeing jack white handle his axe is unbelievable. he gets that thing singing. you hear the albums and you dont realize just how bare bones it is. its just him on his guitar and meg on the drums but they make magic.

at a small club (richards on richards in vancouver, capacity maybe 500 but i doubt its that high) i went to see a band called Stellastar. they were really cool and but on a great show. but they had an opening band named 'the killers' i had never heard of. me and about 70 other were blown away. about 3 months later their debut album hit the charts and theyve been the darlings of rock for the past year of so. great live band.

at the same club me and a buddy went to check out Queens of the Stone Age. we had seen them before at another small club and had just picked up their latest release 'songs for the deaf'. the club was packed to the rafters and we were about 25 feet away as one of the best rock bands kicked asp, with DAVID GROHL on the skins. oh my.

but nothing compares to two augusts ago, at an outdoor stadium, probably 20 000 people watching the sun set behind the stage while radiohead showed us all how rock and roll is supposed to be. thome york has unbelievable stage presence. the band makes magic out of their instruments. the light show was spectacular. i was a big fan before the show, but it was light years beyond my expectations. they came out for two encores, probably played about 7-8 songs in them. if there is one band of this generation that you HAVE to see live, its radiohead.

the only show i have seen that i could put in the same sentence as radiohead was a dj set by the one and only carl cox. imaginge a beach setting, the sun rising the morning after a thunderstorm and carl cox in the middle of a 4hr set. i get goose bumps just thinking of it.

The first concert I ever went to was a Presidents of the USA concert at a small auditorium. That was when they were semi popular with that stupid "lump" song. They weren't really my style of music at the time but my cousin wanted to go and talked me into it. It was alright once we got there. That was also my first mosh experience and I was pretty hooked on the whole concert thing after that.

I would have to say the best concert I ever attended, hands down, was OzzFest in either 2000 or 2001, I can't really remember. Most of that trip is still a haze.
It was at the Gorge Amphitheater along the Columbia River in George, Washington and the best thing was the campgrounds. There was a Dave Mathews concert going on the night we got there (I was with about 7 other buddies and keep in mind when you read this I was single and had no kids at the time).
Anyway, as I was saying, Dave Mathews was playing so there were a ton of people there, I think like 20,000 or something ridiculous like that. This campground was hundreds of acres so there were a lot of RV's and tents pitched. Imagine the biggest camping trip and multiply by 1000. That first night was crazy. Our group somehow got split up on the way in and we didn't see them again until the next morning. There was a lot of Bacardi 151, weed, lots of drugs, girls and mayhem. A chicken fight (where a girl is on a guys shoulders and they try to knock each other off) broke out over the bioswale ditch that ran through the campground so people were getting muddy all over the place. There were mini parties at every other camp site and you could move from one walk 20 ft and you were partying with someone else.

Well, to make a long story short, the following afternoon after we found the rest of our group, we made our way into the grounds for the show and it rocked ass. Rob Zombie, system of a down, POD, Black Sabbath and countless others too many to name. The backdrop for this show was one of the best I have ever seen. Here's a link to the venue if your interested. Gorge Amphitheater (http://www.gorgeconcerts.com/) I would love to go back for another show sometime, a little more sober so I know what's going on.
Since I volunteered to drive there, I had to drive back and of course I was completely hung at this point and it was a 4 hr drive back home. I guess one could say that was probably the wildest, craziest concert I've been to as well.

Some more recent concerts I've attended are Van Halen, Nickleback, Puddle of Mudd and Motley Crue.

First concert was Aerosmith at Pocono Downs in Wilkes-barre, PA in late 1987 or early 88. (it was cold. That is all I remember).

A then unknown Guns-N-Roses were the opener.

While that was a crazy and wild show, the best show I ever saw, where the combination of musicianship and entertainment was first rate, is actually a tie from two totally different bands.

1) Queensryche. Early fall/late summer of 1991, on the tour supporting "Empire". They played the "Operation:Mindcrime album in its entirety, and I was floored. The rest of the show was also spectacular. These guys are REALLY good musicians. You should check them out live, even if the albums don't grab you.

2) I saw the Goo Goo Dolls in 1994, before they got really popular with the song "Name". They packed a club in Allentown, PA, by virtue of all of the college stations in town playing the crap out of all their CD's to that point. They had cleaned up their sound a bit, but were still closer to their garage-punk/Replacements sound-alike roots then they would become later (i.e. "Iris"). They were also still heavy drinkers. It was loud, sloppy, rock n roll show. Aggressive, but melodic. Not extra stuff, no fancy show, no long solos, just a really distilled, basic form of rock. And it was mind blowing. I was going into my sophmore year of college, and I took this girl there on our first date. She had a good time, but alas, she was a senior in HS (although we were both 18 going on 19). So, she had a curfew and I missed the end of the show. She did become a fan of the band, though. But I could never get her to be my girlfriend.

First concert I ever saw was an unknown (at the time) band named U2 at Red Rocks. The tix were a end of school year present from my parents. I was not nearly old enough to drink or do the things people do at concerts. But that was my gain because I saw four guys on stage who could play their butts off.

Not the best show but the one that inspired me to play guitar was the Ratt Bon Jovi show in about 87-88. I was able to get backstage, and man, all the half naked girls running around just begging to give their bodies to anyone in the band. Well that was it, I knew then that I had to become a rock star :D Sadly enough I am not, but hey, we can all dream. Plus... my wife would not approve of the groupies :heh:

Best I have seen.......... There are too many to name. I have seen Prince, who is an awesome showman. I have seen all the 89's metal bands numerous times. Motley Crue shows were great. I have seen Pearl Jam a bunch of times, that's rock and roll. And I hate to say it but it is true, I saw Michael Jackson's Thriler and Bad tours. Say what you want about him, but he is the ultimate showman. Probably the best show I have seen. And one strange note, I saw Nirvana at the Denver Coliseum, and then a couple weeks later I saw on MTV that he killed himself. So that was surreal, seeing the so called savior of rock and roll at the time in the height of his brief fame and then..... gone. Live music is the shizzle. You never know what you will see.

And as a follow up question, what was your best concert ever? all the details again (year, who with, how, etc) I will post mine soon.First concert ? 1987 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood... I especially apreciated "Relax" and "The power of love". This last song is a great slow. and people were taking each other by the shoulder... I was next to a so gorgeous brunette... hummm... I wanted this song not to finish ;) :D ...

Then I saw Depeche Mode (DM) 3 times (1988, 1991, 1994)... Lou Reed... The Silencers...

Best concert ? It's a tied between DM (91 & 94) and The Silencers... What I liked about the concert of the Silencers was that it was a small concert... We were close to the artists.. .Plus, the singer was speaking French very well so he could talk with us... A great ambiance... Very nice concert... Well... DM is my fav. band... each time I saw them live it was great... I'll go to see them on march 26 ofr their new album (Playing The Angel) which will be release soon...

My first concert was when I was about 10 or so and my parents forced me to see Paul Revere and the Raiders.

My first concert that I actually chose to go to wasn't for another 10 years when I saw Jethro Tull (this was mid 90s, so unfortunately they were older, but it was still a great show in support of their then new album "j-tull.com".

Choosing a favorite show is hard. I loved the Roger Waters concert back in 2001 at Fiddlers, but I was alone at that one and had a cruddy seat.

I really enjoyed seeing my current favorite band, Coheed and Cambria. Awesome crowd that sang along to a great performance. Though, I had to watch out for people jumping off balconies and mosh pits.

So...

There was this little club downtown called Ebbits Field ( named after the ballpark!)

3rd hour, Biology, May 15, 1974, my birthday, my buds conglomerated around me, said HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and told me they got us all tickets for Ebbits Field that night!

"Awesome news" says I. We yakkity yaked. Then I thought to ask...
"Who is playing?"
Marty, who actually needed to get out of the room before MR. Anderson showed up said, as he exited the door, over his shoulder...

"Awww... I don't know! Some band out of the South. All I heard was it is "Pronounced - Leh-Nerd - Skyn-erd! See ya after gym class!"

That was the first time I ever heard "Gimme three steps" and all the rest!

What a good, God damned birthday present that was!

Fleetwood Mac at WP, NY in '90. Not a big concert, but pretty damned good. A few weeks later I caught Neil Young, Social Distortion, and Sonic Youth at the same venue. A very strange experience considering the locale and the situation.

My first (big) concert was Ozzy at Red Rocks circa '92. Pretty amazing. He had the crowd in a trance. One of the better shows I've seen.

DMB at Red Rocks circa '96 was one of (if not) the best I've ever seen - much better and smaller than his Mile High appearances. Any one of the handful of Reggae on the Rocks I've attended are right up near the top as well.

I'd have to say the Red Rocks is one of the best concert venues out there. Any show there is pretty good.
