Can't say enough good things about this show. From the pilot to the last episode, it is strong all the way through. Each episode got noticeably better as it went on. Just when you thought that there was no way from them to top the previous episode, they did. The Character's are some of the best I seen. They are so interesting in their interactions. The dialog is top notch and extremely witty. Some episodes are non stop one liners that will have you rolling on the floor while other episodes can be quite chilling or dramatic. This show has it all and I truly think it something that can be enjoyed by everyone. It doesn't suffer from the same sci-fi stereo-types, in fact it goes against them somewhat. I can almost guarantee that you will like this show. Like I said, it has a lot of appeal for a wide group of people. Give it a shot, you WILL NOT be disappointed.
Here's a generic editoral review from Amazon.com
After you've seen all 14 episodes of Firefly contained in this smartly packaged DVD set, you'll be begging for more. The sad irony is, series creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only eleven of these 14 produced episodes had aired on FOX, and its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid suffered an inaugural setback when network executives preferred an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job") over the intended two-hour pilot "Serenity" (oddly enough, the final episode aired), which provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans may debate the quirky, semi-fallible logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang.
What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine subtly-developed characters (a typically Whedon-esque extended family), each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), Serenity captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. By the time we've gathered tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with an as-yet mysterious agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare, it's painfully clear that Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that never came to pass. Fortunately, Whedon was developing a Firefly movie as this DVD set was being released in January 2004, so the ultimate fate of Serenity's crew remains to be seen. In the meantime, these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) offer everything you'd expect from the creator of Buffy: action, drama, humor, hints of romance, suspense, fine acting, film-quality direction, dazzling special effects, and ample proof that Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon
.
Like I said, give it a shot. It's only 35 bucks and you get 14 episodes. Hell, 2 movies will cost you that much. All, the episodes are pretty good so that's alot of value.

Also, for those that are interested, the DVD's sold so well that there's going to be a feature film called "Serenity" released April 22nd 2005. All nine members of the cast have returned and principle filming of the movie is done. They're just finishing up effects and editing and whatnot. Come this April it's going to be a very exciting time for Firefly fans!

Well, I had borrowed my set out to several friends and I haven't watched an episode in about 6 months. Alot of those friends now have their own sets and I started to rewatch mine again. It just kinda rekindled my love for the show I guess.

That's how I learned of the show. A friend of mine loaned me his set.
I learned about it because of continued glowing endorsements on Sci-Fi message boards and what-not. I finally decided to make the plunge and buy a set. I'm glad I did.

I got it solely on the recommendations of the good people on this board. I finished it in a week, including the commentaries, & haven't seen it since as my 2 brothers & now my step-dad have borrowed it. If I get lucky, I may get it back around Christmas.
Would definitely recommend anybody with an interest in sci-fi to buy it.

Heh, that's great that your whole family is getting into it.
I actually watched it from the moment it aired. I was actually waiting to see "John Doe" which came on afterward. My wife and I became instant fans of "Firefly" and stopped watching "John Doe" after a few shows. We just got lucky to find it with NO thanks to FOX and their ridiculously small promotion for the show.
I really hope the movie does well because I want more, either movies or a return to television. I just don't want it to end!

There really hasn't been any advertising here yet either. The official trailer doesn't get released untill Jan 14th during the Elektra movie. I hope it odes well. If it does then there supposed to be a trilogy made. The tv series is unlikely as FOX is holding on to the rights for it for the next 10 years. Oh well, I'll take whatever I can get!

I actually meant for the TV series/DVD release. The first couple of places I asked about it where like 'Huh, what are you waffling about?' I just really hope that 'Serenity' is released over here, but I wouldn't be suprised if it was either released straight to Video or I'll have to wait and import the DVD eventually :(

Ohh OK, I remember seeing the commercials for Firefly on FOX but it was on at a time that I had to work so I didn't pay much attention to it. Serenity is supposed to get a world wide release so hopefully they'll show it close to where your at.

Same here. Friday nights at 8 became sacred.
What was weird was that the very first time I watched Firefly (the very first episode that was aired, "The Train Job" I think) I was getting ready to go to the store because I wanted to get back in time to watch John Doe. I left after the commercial break when they discovered that they hijacked medicine from that town that needed it desperately.
I made it a point not to miss the next episode and I watched every episode after that. When I read that the series was gonna be canceled, I was crushed. After that last episode ("Serenity") aired, I was telling myself "That can't be it. There has to be more. I need more."

That drives me crazy that they showed the episodes out of order. Serenity being the original pilot an all. The Train Job is good but Serenity provides much better character introductions and sets up the Firefly universe much better.

I'm torn on that. I can actually understand why FOX wanted a little more action-filled opening to the series. The pilot is a bit slower paced overall and they were probably afraid people would change the channel. In retrospect, knowing how great the show turned out to be, I obviously wish I had seen the pilot first. But I really don't know how I would have reacted going into the pilot not knowing a thing about it.
So, I'm planning a trip back to Colorado hopefully before the film comes out to visit my sister and her family. I'm going to make them watch some of the show but I can't decide if I want to start them on the pilot or on "The Train Job" which is what hooked me.

Because FOX has no appreciation for quality television and thinks America only wants "reality" TV. Whatever the actual reason, FOX essentially killed the show by giving it a terrible time slot, airing the shows out of order, skipping the pilot, and giving it practically no advertising.
There was a campaign by a lot of the show's fans to convince FOX to put Firefly back on the air but FOX turned a deaf ear to its viewers. Personally, if I have any alternative, I try to avoid watching any more on FOX than I can as a form of personal protest. Unfortunately, they have NFL games and The Simpsons so I'm still on their channel occasionally. :(

Defintely "Serenity" I thought it was perfectly paced. Had enough action and drama and that funny scene where Mal tells the Doc that Kaylee's dead. That joke doesn't work if you show them "The Train Job" first. I remember watching "Serenity" for the first time I was like "No!!! Don't kill the cute girl!!!" Well, the joke was on me too. I was kinda a little upset at first because I been had but subsequent viewings I now laugh my ass off. Anyway, I reccomend "Serenity" first. Don't worry, the show sells itself. Alls they need to do is watch. :D

I know what you mean, maybe the fact that there are so few episodes makes it more difficult to single any one out.
With the Star Trek series in all it's guises, certain episodes stand head & shoulders above the rest, quite probably because the characters & situations are so well know. Episodes such as DS9's 'Trials & Tribble-ations' and 'Far Beyond The Stars' stand out because they take the charectors out of the known situation.
With Firefly, we were still getting to know & understand the charectors when the show was cut. Each episode introduced a new facet to a couple of charectors, or a new twist to their overall situation. Roll On Serenity!

Latest Firefly/Serenity news
SciFiWire article about Serenity:
Serenity Surprises Whedon
Joss Whedon, writer and director of the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that shooting the feature-film version of his Fox TV series Firefly is every bit as stressful as churning out an hour of TV drama every week. "It's been as stressful, and I thought it'd be less stressful," Whedon said in an interview during a break in filming last summer at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. "I thought I'd be, you know, golfing in between takes and writing sonnets."
Whedon makes his feature-film directorial debut with Serenity after having created and run TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, many of whose episodes he both wrote and directed. With Serenity, he said, "two things have not worked in my favor. One is, although I don't have three shows to run—and believe me, nothing will ever be as hard as that was—the movie takes up your attention in the way that three shows do. All of the creative energy that you're usually pouring into telling 20 to 40 stories a year, you're pouring into one, and you find you need it. You find you wake up in the middle of the night and go, 'His pants are too baggy.' And it's important. You have to watch everything so carefully, because every mistake that you make is going to be 40 feet high. Whenever you think, 'Well, maybe that's good enough,' I just say to myself: 'Cineramadome.'"
Still, Whedon said, he's finding the filmmaking process surprising, even after having produced 13 hours of Firefly. "You really are surprised by what you do in a way that you're not so much with TV," he said. "Because, even though I know these guys—even though [we're] on Serenity, which are known quantities to me—I'm still surprised, more than I ever have been in TV. I'll do, you know, 10 takes and watch [them] and go, 'Boy, this first one was better than the one with all my notes in it. Remind myself not to tell him that.' ... [The movie] talks back to you, and it does it while you're still making it. In TV, it doesn't do that 'til you're done, which is what's different about it." Serenity, starring Nathan Fillion, is in post-production with an eye to an April 22, 2005, release. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Here's even more News
Serenity Gets Darker
Nathan Fillion—who stars in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, based on Fox's canceled series Firefly—told SCI FI Wire that his character, Capt. Mal Reynolds, will be a little darker than he was allowed to be in the TV show. "I think he's still on that same vein," Fillion said in an interview during a break in filming at Universal Studios in Los Angeles last August. "I think if anything, I think he's a little darker than he was before. I think he's a little more empty than he was before. He, too, has had the rug pulled out from under him a couple of times since we've known him in the series. And I also think that, because we're in a film, another difference versus television is we can be allowed to be darker. ... We don't have a ... TV producer saying, 'Make him more likable and funny.'"
Fillion plays the captain of a small transport ship 500 years in the future, leading a ragtag crew of survivors from a galactic civil war. The film will feature the series' creepy cannibalistic renegades, the Reavers, and also give Reynolds a love interest, Fillion said. As for making the film, he added, "It's a little different. We had eight days to put on a one-hour show. Now we've got the better part of three months to put out a two-hour show. So the timing is a little different. But certainly I can tell that the quality is also extremely different."
As for his acting style, Fillion said, "I haven't made any drastic changes or anything. I have noticed that my nose is a lot bigger on screen. It's like, there are times when if you could put your arms up, that's about how wide my nostrils are. I've always known I have big nostrils, but now I could park a Buick in them." Serenity is slated for an April 2005 release. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Serenity Star Ready For Film
Nathan Fillion, who stars as Capt. Mal Reynolds in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that he doesn't feel a lot of pressure in his first major feature-film lead role, based on his character from Fox's canceled TV series Firefly. "I don't feel a lot of that pressure," Fillion said in an interview during a break in filming at Universal Studios in Los Angeles last summer. "My schedule is much the same as it was on the series: I'm here a lot. But I get to perform with everybody in the cast. I get to have great scenes with all of these great characters that I fell in love with. I don't feel a great deal of pressure. You know what? I'm starting to feel the thing, now that it's wrapping up, [where] I just really hope people enjoy this movie. I really hope they do. I hope folks that aren't fans—that weren’t fans of the series—will catch this and maybe go get the DVD collection and [see] what [they were] missing."
Serenity picks up the story of the short-lived Firefly, about the ragtag crew of a transport spaceship 500 years in the future as they eke out a living in the wake of a galactic civil war. Fillion's Reynolds is the captain of the ship and a war-weary veteran of the losing side in the civil war. "I'm here having a great time with some very talented actors, with a very talented director [Firefly creator Joss Whedon], who are all my good friends. I'm in a very safe place here. I don't come to work feeling 'There's a lot of pressure on me.' I come to work saying 'What do we get to do today? Who am I going to get to hang out with today? Who's on the guest list, the call sheet, today that I get to hang out with?'"
Fillion added, "Joss has told me he's under a little more pressure. But you know what? I don't see it. I think when we were doing the series, I saw him working on three series [Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly]. We didn't see him near as often as we would have liked, because he's great to have around. He's a real warm presence on a set. His presence on set is calming. He's very specific in what he wants. He's very confident in his choices, and it's nice to have him around." Serenity is slated for release in April 2005. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

I really seems like Fillion is a really big fan of the show. Some actors just think it's a job but he really seems to love the show alot.
I think it shows in the performance. If an actor truly believes in a roll in tends to show in the quality of their performance. You can normally tell when an actor is just going through the motions either because of a lack of belief in the film, or just for the money.

Yeah, if you haven't already, Listen to the commentaries Fillion does on "Serenity" and "War Stories." He has a genuine affection for the role and the series as a whole. He even talked about how much he loved the theme song and the special effects and ect ect. He seems like he's the biggest fan of the series of any of us out there. He kept talking about how fortunate he was and that he was happier doing that then any other time in his life!!! Actually that last part I might a caught from an interview but it doesn't make it any less true.

A Visit to the Serenity Set
Source: Andrew Weil November 16, 2004
Joss Whedon stands, hoarse-voiced, telling the many flanking journalists, "Today, I'm deciding whether or not to use this shot. Whether it's realistic enough or it looks too fancy."
There is currently a woman and two men hanging from wires in a futuristic bar. This is the set of Serenity, Joss Whedon's adaptation of his "failure" of a TV show Firefly.
Serenity follows a crew, headed by Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), through their adventures in space battling the evil Alliance and reavers. If this doesn't sound too familiar, don't fret. The show was cancelled after a short time on the air, yet Universal Studios is giving Whedon a chance to resurrect the project for the big screen.
Producer Barry Mendel said the best-selling DVD set of the TV show didn't even help Universal latch onto the film. "They were already onboard before they came out. (Universal execs) are big believers in Joss; I think they think he is someone who is going to be making films for a long time," said Mendel.
The challenge for the cast and crew was transitioning the show to a big-screen film. "We love the show and we want to preserve everything great about the show," continued Mendel. "But, we also give reason for someone to get out of their house and pay for something they used to get for free."
Summer Glau, who stars as River remarks about the positive changes that come along with a big-screen budget. "We have a bigger budget, which is fun, and we get more time to do each scene. But really, the way Joss shoots is so specific, we wondered how different it would get from the series. He knows exactly what he wants so when we come in to do a scene."
As for those who don't know the TV show well, Glau reports that there are some flashbacks and some moments for new people to catch up.
When pressed for information on how her character evolves in the film,Glau only drops this enigmatic hint: "My character was just getting started and now, in the film, you really going to see an explosion of what really is going on with River."
Whedon believes that Serenity is Glau's chance to rise to the occasion. "She really stepped up to the plate; she's not in the corner babbling all the time anymore. She's got more to do and her presence is pretty luminous," said Whedon.
Whedon finds the task of directing a movie to be tough, but he's not one to back down at the challenge. "I thought it would be less stressful. I thought I'd be golfing in between takes and writing sonnets. Two things have not worked in my favor, although I don't have three shows to run, and nothing will be as hard as that was, the movie takes up your attention the way three shows do. All the creative energy that you usually pour into creating 20 or 40 stories a year, you are pouring into one and you find you need it."
What Whedon finds most important is allowing new viewers to watch the film with fresh eyes, while still being able to please his rabid fan base. "It's incredibly hard. Building a story that doesn't repeat or contradict what we've already one that satisfies the fans, but is made for people who haven't seen the show is incredibly tricky. It's the hardest story I've ever had to structure. Writing these people is the easiest thing in the world cause I know these people so well. TV shows built around slow development of character's movies are built on momentum. They are two very different things. You have to let some things drop and you have to speed some things up and know which ones or which."
Whedon does shy away from jinxing a sequel, but does mention it. "I think of this as an absolute one-shot. Could it sustain more stories? Well I obviously designed their world and these characters and this ensemble to sustain seven years for us. So yeah, there could be more. We'd love to do more. We have to make this one good enough to deserve that."
As Whedon looks again at the current scene, he remarks, "I'm trying to stay away from a Matrix-y kind of aesthetic. I don't want people doing anything they can't do, to an extent."
Serenity will be released April 22nd.

I've been a fan of the show since it was on and I've been a Bronco fan since Elway came into the league. It's nice to know there's places out there where people have similar interests. I can't wait for Serenity either. I was almost as happy to hear they were gonna have a movie as I was when the Broncos won the Superbowl! Here's to hoping that the Broncos win the SuperBowl again and that Serenity is a smash hit!!!!

I heard a rumor that the guy that plays "Angel" is going to make a cameo in the movie. I tried to find a link but was unsuccesfull. That would be cool if he was in it.
I saw something like that a couple months ago but Whedon said there wasn't any truth to it and that he didn't want to do any kind of crossovers with the Buffy/Angel verses with the Firefly verses even if the actors played different roles.

Hey, welcome to the board!
I liked hearing that Whedon already has enough storyline for sequels (7 seasons worth of TV). So, if Serenity can just do decently at the box office, I'm optimistic about more Firefly in the future. And, while I'm fairly certain it won't happen, I'm still holding out hope for a return to the TV series.

That's what I ultimately want. Firefly needs to return to TV. I want the characters to slowly develop and evolve over time. I don't want a triology. I want a rich, deep story that is meticulously revealed bit by bit.
But like you said that sounds unlikely. For Firefly to return to TV, the Fox execs will pretty much have to admit that they were dumbasses in the first place and I don't see that happening.
But beggars can't be choosers and I'll take my Firefly anyway I can get it.

Feel free to do the same or anything Firefly related. There's a few of Firefly Bronco fans on here and if you go to other Sci-Fi boards, you'll see there's lots of Firefly fans in general. I would love it if Firefly would return to TV. Too bad FOX owns the rights. Why don't they just give them up? Don't they care how many people they've pissed off by not doing that? I guess not. My hope is that Serenity does so well, that it really makes FOX look like a bunch of idiots for screwing it up to begin with.

Here's a photo of the cast (minus Book and Inara) from the film. You can get an idea of the changes they've done to the set. From what little you can make out, I think I still like the more worn-in look of Serenity from the series. It seems a little too shiny in this pick. Although that just maybe for posters and stuff. Still I like to see the crew "back in uniform" again.

Well, this sucks. Just found out that Serenity has been delayed till Sep 30th. Browncoats everywhere are sheading tears. Looks like we'll have to wait 5 more months for the Big Damn Movie!!
From Joss himself
Are you guys starting to hear that fanfare? Those distant drums? Are you slapping on your side-arms, pulling on your long brownish-colored coats and thumbing your crisp new bills in anticipation of the cinematic event of the year? Well, it's official: on April 22nd you, the true the blue the loyal, can step right up with the rest of America and WAIT FIVE MORE MONTHS.
Heh. See, sometimes studios shuffle around release dates...
Okay. Don't panic. right now you're panicking. you're thinking, "how could they do this to me?" But what you SHOULD be thinking is: "How could they do this to JOSS?". Seriously. That pity is mine and I want it back.
So what happened? Well, nothing terribly original. April got crowded with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio decided September was a clearer corridor for the film to make the kind of impact it should. This isn't about a lack of confidence in the film -- in fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to, they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign since there's not a single finished effect in the film. There's no reworking the end, no reshoots, no "does it have to be in space?". It's just a marketing issue. Now you'll get to watch lots of trailers in the summer. And hopefully, by the time it comes out, other people, people who ain't us, will get a whiff of what we're up to, and come along too.
I love this movie. I HATE waiting to show it too you. I felt pretty much the way I imagine you're feeling right now when they told me. But these guys know what they're doing, and they're trying to protect their investment, not bury it. So I gotta be a grown-up. The release date is September 30th. Hopefully it won't change again.
Spread the word. Keep the faith. And gleam the damn cube already.

Hey guys,
Adam Baldwin(Jayne) posted this on the Firefly board. Thought you might like to read it.
So, I'm walking back from Starbuck's today and guess who comes riding up on his bicycle: No... not John Mellencamp. JOSS, it was Joss.
So he says, " I was going to call you today" and I says, "About the postponement?"
"Yeah, I figured if anyone would already know it would be Adam, MR. ONLINE GUY" So he proceeds to tel me that this will be a blessing in disguise and the studio is really happy with the film and wanted more time to gear up a really kick-a$$ marketing SCHEME. Which they will.
Then we chit-chatted for a while about family and stuff... Caterpillars... the length of the show... the fact that Jayne is really cool... and funny... and strong looking.... and "Oh, by the way," he asks, "are you guys free next thursday for a screening?"
So I says, "Hmmmmm I'll check my schedule but I think perhaps maybe it will be a possibility that I will attempt to squeeze it in." What's that guy's name again? Oh yeah... Joss. The boss. AKA G-d.
So anyway guys, this is good news, let's take it as GOOD NEWS. It felt rushed to me anyway. Like the series did. Now we have plenty of time for all of those summer-esque trailers and OSCAR (trademark) considerations.
Love and Serenity Always,

Hey guys, Thought I would post another response from the crew of Serenity!! Jewel Staite (Kaylee) chimed in about the delay on her website. Check it out.
Okay.......
So I know there's a bit of panic and disappointment in the air, re: the delaying of the premiere of "Serenity".... but this isn't such a bad thing! The delaying, I mean.
I can say completely honestly that I am not shocked that there would be a delay. This is Hollywood. This happens all the time. And it's for good reason, too. From what I am told, Universal is very excited about this movie. They love everything they've seen, and what they HAVE seen is without most of the special effects, which is saying a lot. Perhaps they came to some realizations about what needs to be done to market our movie properly. Or maybe they just want to make sure that it has the best opening weekend it can. They really do care. They're not doing this to be *******s. They're doing it for business reasons. Studios like to make their money back—trust me. Don't worry. Just think of it this way: by the time the movie actually opens, you will be peeing your pants with anticipation (hopefully), and you'll want to see it triple the times you were planning to see it in the first place!! (right?)
And also, this just gives us (meaning us as in actors and us as in the rest of you, the devotees as I proudly like to call you) more time to seek new converts. More time to buy your friends those DVD box sets. More time to get the word out about the film, so it can open successfully and so we can do a couple more. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING happens for a reason. I am a firm believer in that.
In the mean time, we will continue making appearances at conventions, as long as we are invited and are able. There is news of one in February that a lot of us may be attending, and a lot of you know about the one in the UK in late April of next year. We are spreading the word as best we can!
For non-Serenity news, my movie I wrapped not too long ago, Widow on the Hill, will be airing on the Lifetime network at the end of January. And as far as I know, THAT has not been pushed. Ha ha. Not that funny, I know.
It will all work out for the best. And that's not a comment from my faith. It's just simply a fact.
Now, go watch your Firefly DVDs again!
Jewel
Well, the crew is making me fell better about this. I just hate delay's. Delay of the movie means delay of the DVD's. Yada, Yada, Yada

It's great. "Serenity" is a great movie.
With temp effects, the BDM still kicks a$$!!! You'll love it! Every single one of our beloved cast of characters (and some newbies) are well-served and showcased in a loving and thrilling way... even Jayne. ;- )
Joss is our hero!
We all went out to Nate's favorite sushi restaurant afterwards and had a grand time, hic!
Can't talk story, but the movie is one of the most unique and exciting film experiences I've ever witnessed. Riveting...
I'm sure you'll all agree.
Informational chestnut:
Apparently there will be some test screenings in the very near future. I know not when, or where. Mitch can, if he is available, certainly give the particulars about the protocols of this stage in the process; and how the reactions in those tests affect the forward momentum of the BDM. Hey guys, here's another interview with a Serenity cast member. This time "River" chimes in. There are some very very minor spoilers. Nothing big at all. I will try my best not to post anything too spoilery.
Interview with Summer:
Summer Glau Talks About "Serenity"
From Rebecca Murray,
Summer Glau on Working with Joss Whedon, "Firefly," and "Serenity"
A few of the cast members from Joss Whedon's much-anticipated "Serenity" movie showed up at the World Premiere of "In Good Company."
Showing their support for Dennis Quaid and Co., Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion looked very pleased to be at the red carpet event - and even more pleased to get the chance to sing the praises of Whedon's "Serenity" film.
INTERVIEW WITH SUMMER GLAU ('River Tam'):
How was working on “Serenity” the movie different from working on "Firefly" the series?
That’s a very good question but, really, most of the only work I’ve done has been with Joss so I don’t know how different he is. He hired me for my first role. He cast me in my first television series and he cast me in my first leading role in a feature. He’s my guru and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I think he’s amazing to work with because he knows exactly what he wants; he’s so good at inspiring us and communicating just what he wants. I would say we were concerned about how different it was going to be, working with him on a television series to working with him on a film, but he’s so specific, and this film was so close to his heart, that it flowed. I mean, he knew exactly what he wanted to see. He conveyed it to us and we had a blast.
It went so smoothly. We were never behind schedule. I know it was incredibly hard for Joss because the entire production was just hanging on his every word, so I’m sure it was incredibly stressful for him. But for us, it was just an amazing ride.
Will moviegoers have to know “Firefly” to get “Serenity?”
The way Joss did it was brilliant because we picked up the story where we left off so fans of the show won’t be bored with the storyline. They’ll be ready to go. But also, he introduces the characters fresh for anybody who doesn’t know them. You’re immediately invested in each character. He did an amazing job of making sure that everyone’s storyline continued and had depth. I think every character is so different and everybody is going to have something.
This is a pretty big ensemble cast. How did Joss balance it out?
He’s a magician. He does it. I would love to play any character in this movie. It’s so meaty. Everyone has their moment. Everybody has their ‘hero’ moment. There’s not a moment to breathe. I just saw a screening and you are riveted from start to finish.
Being on the set and working on the film and then seeing the screening, was there a moment where you went, “Oh, that’s what he had in mind?”
Oh, there were so many moments like that. I couldn’t be there every moment and see what he was doing with everybody. But I teared up five minutes in. I was so proud of all my friends, all my fellow cast mates. I couldn’t believe how fantastic everybody looked and how ready everyone was to get in there and just knock it out.
You’re a ballerina, right?
I was. I started out as dancer.
Does that help you with an action movie like “Serenity?”
It helps so much but I’ll tell you, I was not prepared for how hard they were going to train me for this. I mean, when they first met me they thought, “Oh, you know, she’s kind of scrawny and she’s kind of leggy and I don’t know what we can do with her.” And then they started training me and they said, “You know, we’re going to train you for real because you can really do this.” So they had me come in, I worked so hard. I cried every day.
Was it wire work or what type of training did you do?
They watched me move and they sort of formulated a style that was suited to my body. Being a ballet dancer and the way I move and what’s going to look good on me, and what’s going to look realistic because I do a lot of fighting with these big guys. What was going to make me look like I really had some power and I could really do some damage? So they did sort of a wushu kung-fu kick boxing hybrid on me. I worked so hard and I did pretty much everything myself.
You did most of your own stunts?
[A stunt person] did the falling. They wouldn’t let me fall. She did two of the big somersault/jumping down stairs things that they wouldn’t let me do. And she was amazing. I trained with her. She trained by me every day and we worked out hours and hours every day together. I did 95% of it myself.
Do you think you’ve been spoiled being able to work so much with Joss Whedon?
Oh, absolutely! People kept coming up to me during the movie and saying, “You know, I’ve been worrying about you Summer because who is ever going to write a story for you like this again?” I’m so lucky. He just knows how to talk to me. He knows how to inspire me, and it’s so rare.
Would you say Joss Whedon's style of directing changes based on which actor he’s working with at the time?
I think so. I think he chooses his people – first of all, we got along like family – and he understands us, each as individuals. He knows how to talk to us. He knows I’m really shy and insecure. He knows how to motivate me and bring out my best, keep me from being afraid. I’m the type of person where I panic and think, “I can’t do it! I don’t know what I’m doing here. Let me leave!” And he’ll talk me down and he’s my hero.
Will there be a "Serenity" sequel?
Oh, we’re hoping for it. We have a deal worked out, depending on how the first one does. Hopefully we’ll end up doing two or three.
Is there any chance that now that the movie’s coming out and people are excited about it, you’ll go back to doing the “Firefly” series?
We dream about that.
In our dreams we’d love to be doing it every day again. I know there’s a lot of fans that are excited about the feature, but it’s not the same as having somebody in your house every week, you know? So that’s going to be something that remains to be seen. We can only hope.
They really didn’t give the series much of a chance to find its way.
They didn’t.
Was the cast aware the series was going to be cancelled that quickly?
Well, they cancelled us right before Christmas. We weren’t ready. They gave us a certain amount of episodes to do at the beginning. Then they renewed us for, I think, three more episodes, which was such a short time to prove ourselves. Then out of nowhere, we just got cancelled. We all went off for Christmas knowing that we wouldn’t get to come back. We were heartbroken. We cried and cried. We put our hearts and souls into it, and it was such a good series. And we all knew that things like this don’t come along every day. Stories like this don’t.
They ran it out of order and they preempted us for baseball so many times. We just didn’t get a chance. But our fans have stuck with us. They are amazing. I write to some of them. I have their email addresses. They’re just so close to our hearts. I don’t think we could have made it through if we hadn’t had so much support from them when the show got cancelled. They said, “No, we’re going to stand behind you.” They wrote in. They did fundraisers, and it made it so much easier.

Hey guys, here's another interview with a Serenity cast member. This time "River" chimes in. There are some very very minor spoilers. Nothing big at all. I will try my best not to post anything too spoilery.
Well, I stopped reading right there. I'm trying to avoid anything spoilery (is that a word?). I'm going to even avoid all previews if I can. I figure the previews will be on the DVD when it comes out.
When I know I want to see a movie this bad, I hate to know even the slightest bit about the plot. Kind of like in T2, I wished I hadn't seen a preview so it would have come as a surprise that Arnold was a good guy in that flick.

 Jav, it's completely harmless. Really.
You remind me of a friend who was just like you during the months before Episode I came out. To roughly paraphrase, he said, "I want to be completely ignorant when I go into that theatre."
I was gonna make a remark about the interview, but I'll respect Jav's wishes. LOL.

Right. SPOILER ALERT (although it's not really a spoiler alert)!!!!
I liked how Summer's trainers saw her move first and then formulated a fighting style for her. How cool would it be to have some guys see you move and then train you to a fighting style that best suits you? Of course, the training would be hell, but that sounds so bad ass.

Got some reviews of the screening last tuesday. I tried to sift out all the spoilery parts. So far the screening reviews have been extremely positive from Firefly and non Firefly fans. Looks like a good one!! Check it out.
From Whedonesque:
First, I need to say, DO NOT READ THE SPOILER THREAD(at Whedonesque) if you're at all hesitant about finding out what happens. There were a number of shocks that had the entire theatre roaring with applause, trembling with cheers, and jolting in suspense throughout the ENTIRE FILM.
Serenity will let no Joss fan down, no science fiction fan down, and no movie fan down. Period.
Most of the special effects shots weren't finished, but enough was there for the audience to fill in with their thriving imaginations. What WAS completed was so thrilling, so exuberant, so breathtaking that other films in the genre pale by comparison.
My biggest relief was that Serenity is indicative of what Joss can do if he's left to his own devices. If no brainless exec or hack director can lay a finger on the project. This is pure Joss, and all of his skeptics will have a mouthful of foot after they see this masterpiece of the genre.
It was amazing, astonishing, shocking, brilliant...
This movie is incredible and even though I saw it an hour
ago, I will still be the first person in line September 30.
The crowd seemed to love every minute of it. Cheering throughout the whole two hours.
Seriously, guys, you'll be so relieved you didn't peak at the spoilers come Sept 30th. Being that shocked and surprised during a film is all too rare. Even reading the mild spoilers will water down the effect.
Would you rather be rattled and gasping at things you never saw coming? Or would you rather just sit there and wait for it?
From the Firefly message board at FOX:
Lights go down, movie goes up, Couple hours of OMG OMG Laugh OMG OMG Jump OMG Laugh OMG YIKES OMG jump OMG Laugh OMG WHAT! OMG OMG JUMP OMG WHAT! OMG OMG I LOVE JOSS OMG laugh OMG OMG I HATE JOSS OMG Laugh OMG I LOVE JOSS OMG OMG Laugh OMG etc etc.
About three quarters of the way through (even though I don't even know how long it was, since it was so damn "edge of your seat, finger biting" spectacular and fast) I suddenly realise...I'M WATCHING THE BDM! THIS IS IT! THIS IS NOT A DREAM. I'm here and this is it and OMG I am so happy and relieved and amazed I could have died in that moment and not even have known it!
Then the lights go on and they pass out the questionaires. Now I am looking at it...and I am thinking "words"! They want me to make words! I think I knew some when I arrived! But they are gone! I am...just... inarticulate. What scenes did I like? HUh? There were scenes? Actors? Was there acting? How do I feel about the movie...speechless...overwhelmed.....amazed...in awe.....
See NOW I have words, but at that moment it was just too incredible.
From Ain't It Cool:
"Hercules the Strong"
...in many ways the film is already a great antidote for those of us so terrifically bored by the “Star Wars” prequels. The lion’s share of my own disappointment with “The Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones” can be traced to an absence of players as compelling and likeable as Han and Leia.
“Serenity,” by contrast, returns to “Firefly” fans better than half a dozen Solo-caliber characters to sink our teeth into...
The new film is smart, romantic, moving, fast-paced, action-packed and, most crucially, one of the funniest films you’ll see next year. It’s certain to be a must-see for every “Firefly” fan...
"The Scientist"
Non-Firefly viewers: First, if you've never seen the show before, the movie does a fantastic job of establishing all of the characters over again so you don't have to worry about coming in unprepared.
More shocks than you can shake a stick at! You can't take the sky from me! But seriously, when this thing gets through with all the post-prod. stuff, you're going to be peeing in your brown leather coats because it'll be like the clocks were rewound and you were in 2002 again. It's not perfect yet, mind you ... but that's nitpicking the absolute blast I had seeing everybody again. Plus, there's some wicked gorram action that would have been way out of budget for the TV show.
"Happily Surprised"
Tonight, in Chatsworth, CA, I think I stumbled across the geek Holy Grail. Upon the announcement of said Holy Grail, cheers erupted from the crowd… For what we were “the first audience ever” to view was… Serenity.
Since this has been the subject of much banter on this site and I’m sure there will be a million of other reviews, I’ll skip any other touching stories about the screening. But I will tell you that I am not a hardcore Joss Whedon fan. I’ve seen a handful of Buffy and Angel episodes (and enjoyed them) and I admire his dedication to his online fanbase, but I’ve never seen Firefly and I’ve never totally bowed down to him. No hard feelings, just haven’t been so totally familiar with him as to realize his genius.
My bad.
This movie rocked. While it seemed a tad too long, that just means more gold for the DVD. Anyway, I don’t even know what they could cut out because just about every scene kept the movie moving along. Before I contradict myself again, I’ll just get to the meat.
Whedon has created such incredible characters and dialogue in this movie. What has always struck me about most science fiction movies is that no one speaks normally, it’s almost as if space has stifled their sense of normalcy and rammed a giant stick up the characters’ asses. Well, as most of you will already know, Whedon can put his characters in the most unimaginable and incredible circumstances and still give them personalities, wit, and true emotion. It doesn’t sound like much, but between the dialogue, the characters, and the visuals (effects were unfinished, but you could tell what will be in store for the final product), I believe that he has really not just elevated the genre, but has transcended it.
The characters are as fleshed-out as most Whedon fans would probably expect, but I was not prepared for this. Nathan Fillion (a guy I ashamedly say I only really recognized from Two Guys A Girl and A Pizza Place) is a great addition to the heroes of the big screen. He’s the best Han Solo since… well… Han Solo. The rest of the cast, filled with people I kind of recognized, seemed so comfortable and so natural. Their rapport with each other was perfect. It really shows that they all spent time together on a TV show… albeit a short-lived one. ...
I’ll be happy to drag my uninitiated friends to this when it comes out and I just may feel like I’m a little more on the inside this time around. But no matter… it’s a great movie
Well that certainly looks promising!!! Can't wait for Sept 30th!!!!!

Hey.
Just wanted to thank everyone for this thread. I asked for the show for Christmas (couldn't wait and opened it early) and fully enjoyed the series after having several marathon nights in a row to finish it off.
Great series. One of the best I've seen and ironically one of the most crucially linear shows I've ever seen. No wonder it flopped on network.
Anyway, question for you guys: Do you think Jayne would have eventually totally crossed the captain if the show continued?

Hey, glad you enjoyed the show! And you're right about FOX screwing the show by airing it out of order, amongst other things.
As far as Jayne goes...well, we might find more out when the movie comes out in September. :D My personal feeling is that, despite their differences, he respected Malcolm too much betray him. But it wouldn't be the first time the writer threw me for a loop.

I'm not sure. Maybe. I think the Captain almost killing Jayne at the end of Ariel might make him think twice before he crosses Mal again. I really think that Mal was gonna do it. The only thing that saved Jayne was when he asked the Captain not to tell the others what he did. Basically saying he did have a conscience after all. If it wasn't for that, I think Mal would have killed him off! Brillant the way they set that up.

True. Compound that with the respect that the Doctor gives him even though its undeserved and the fact that River threatened to kill him with her brain(something that he is definately out matched in ;) )

A simple harmless way to convert Browncoats is to simply write positive reviews about the show on various websites that allow you to do this. You may think that no one ever reads those things but you'd be wrong. People like me read them. It was the glowing reviews Firefly got on message boards and other websites that made me take the plunge now it's time to your part as a Browncoat!! Besides, it will help you pass the time between now and Sept 30th which seems like forever away.
Here's some websites I wrote reviews at. To be honest, I just made one and then copied it to the other sites so I didn't have to write so many.
Barnes and Noble (http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?ean=24543089292&frm=0&itm=1&ATL_lid=8R18GHiAOF&ATL_sid=8R18GHiAPF&IDX=2&ALLCR=Y&ATL_lid=8R18GHiAOF&ATL_sid=8R18GHiAPF&userid=8R18GHiAOF#cust_comm)
Epinions.com (http://www.epinions.com/mvie_mu-1126258)
Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj 0wfHE9ZmlyZWZseXxodG1sPTF8bm09b24_;fc=2;ft=22;fm=1 )
Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000AQS0F/ref=ase_imdb-adbox/103-5305261-2899067?v=glance&s=dvd)
Alot of you have already posted one at Amazon so if you can just copy that one and paste it to the others, that would make it simple.
Epinions only has 16 reviews.
If anyone can think of any other sites where you can post reviews than post it here as well.
Thanks!

Joss posted on the Serenity boards!!!
The Trailer comes out Tuesday on the net and Friday in theaters!
Numfar do the dance of Joy!!!!
Here's what Whedon had to post
Hey guys.
I'm here on the official site, so that can only mean one thing: somebody finally told me my password! (Again.) It probably also means that I have some big-ass announcement or other. Well tops on the announcement list is this: after months of intensive yoga, i can finally touch my toes! (They feel round and bunion-y.)
But there's more! I'm talkin' movie news, peeps, so no more drumroll: Trailer. Serenity. Tuesday.
Yeah, kids, the haps is hap'nin', and it runs thus: EXCLUSIVELY on Apple movie trailers (and linked through this site as well of course) will be a small, medium, large or FULLSCREEN trailer for Serenity the major motion movie. Yeah, THE trailer. And the following Friday said trailer hits theaters. Which theaters? Until I get confirmation you'll have to guess, but I'm betting you can.
Now, here's a word of warning: this trailer ain't shy. If you're looking to live totally spoiler-free, know that there's plenty of key dialogue and images running through this bad boy. It's pretty tasty, though, and it doesn't give everything away. But close scrutiny will definitely learn you much of what's to come. (Anakin TOTALLY goes evil.) It's a nice piece to while away the time till September, and hopefully should intrigue th' peeps that don't have coats of brown.
The only thing more exciting than y'all finally seeing this was showing it to Nathan. Like a schoolboy giggled he.
Bye-ee!

I could give it a try........ im always bored at night..... why not watch a dvd.
Well, if you do decide to get it.
I would get it from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000AQS0F/qid=1114295549/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-3732620-3628656?v=glance&s=dvd). It's only 35 bucks and you can choose the free shipping option. Check out some of the customer reviews. I think it may be one of the highest rated products on Amazon.
Another thing is, don't tell us what you think about it untill you've seen all 14 episodes. Firefly is heavily character driven and the characters have arcs that build off of each other quickly. By the time you get to the end, your sad that you don't get to see these characters anymore (at least in tv form).

I just wanted to let y'all know that there is another Bronco fan who is also a "Firefly"/"Serenity"/Joss Whedon addict. I was bummed that the premiere of the BDM got pushed back to September. I was going to drag all of my friends and family to the BDM for my b-day party. (my b-day was the 19th). I have been waiting (not so patiently) for something new: the trailer, spoilers (no, I don't believe in spoiling those who hate spoilers), anything about our fine, fabulous BDM. I have said that I'll pay $7 to see "Hitchhicker", well more acurately the "Serenity" trailer in the "Hitchhiker" movie. Is it September yet?
