View Full Version : Reading Plays...

Alright, for all of you who play football or did...or just know it.
When I'm watching football or playing it on PS2 or whatever, I have really no idea what's going on play wise.
I have no idea why one play works better than another and how this defense is better than that (well I do sort of but...)
I don't know how to explain it. How do you figure your play will work? How do you create a play when you're a coach and know it will be a successful one? Perhaps you don't and you just try trial and error right?
The only thing I have to refer to is video games...like when I'm picking a play, I don't know what I'm doing...I just know I want to throw the ball or run it...and if it works I use it again...
I'd like to be able to watch football and be like: oh they're running such and such a play against this defense...blah blah blah...
Maybe it'd be easier if I'd have played football...ever...
So for those of you who play or have played...how do you memorize all those frickin' plays? and know which ones to use?

Hmm...I suppose...
But that's why I'm puzzled...I know a lot about football for having never played it...
I still don't get plays though...I just know that when I see them on TV I'm like: "no you should go that way or do that...blah blah"
They must be easier than they seem to memorize and be able to carry them all out if you're a player...

So, uh....what are we all playing Madden or ESPN?
Whether I'm playing Madden or ESPN 2K5, I just use the philosophy of "take what the defense gives you". There's always gonna be at least one receiver left open on the field, its just a matter of how fast you can find him. The one thing I like about ESPN 2K5 is the timing is based on your quarterback's feet for pass plays. Its sort of a West Coast Offense style. For example on a 3-step drop for a pass play, I just have to look at the QB's feet with one eye and search for the open receiver with the other. After he bounces forward, I'm already getting rid of the ball (for quick slant, quick out/in pass patterns). But don't forget to figure out how hard you're going to throw your pass. Its either bullet (hold down the button), or lob pass (tap the button). Set your game on "easy" or "rookie" mode first under the "options" menu no matter what version of football game your playing. Its a good way of getting your feet wet. Or even better yet, you can experiment certain plays under the "practice" menu of either game and see what plays work for you. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Madden games seem to use the same plays every year for each team. The 2K series by Sega have new plays every year for each team. So, pick your poison and good luck.

I'm not going to get in real deep with this but I do play 2K5 a lot.
Offense:
Running the ball; I use motion a lot to see if the defense is in man-to-man or zone. If they are using zone obviously the CB wont follow the reciever. If this is the case then put that reciever to the side you are running to for either clearing out or as an additional blocker. If the D is in man-to-man keep the reciever on the side away from the run.
Passing; Again motion is useful in reading the D are they in zone or man-to-man. Zone look for posts man to man look for outs. Quick tip if man-to-man I like to use mation to clear the weak side and make a quick outlet pass to the RB.
*Hip Tips audibles are key as well as Hot Routes so learn to use them. IE if the D is lined up in a 4-4 (Bear in 2K5) and you plan to run, then look to audible to a quick slant or the safer move quick outs (toward the sidelines). Likewise if you plan to throw and the D is in a dime package its a good time to audible to a run up the middle. In 2K5 you have the option to pick your audibles as well as Hot Routes. 2K5 is all I really play (Obviously).
I'm a bit tired and have a lot to do today being Christmas Eve and all so I'll let someone else help with you with D.
Good luck and have fun. Oh and Merry Christmas!!

Hmm...I suppose I'll just have to study a bit more...
I have no problem when playing video games...it's more when I'm watching it on tv that I'd like to be able to know what's going on play-wise...
I want to be able to say: "oh they're running this play..." or "why aren't they running this play?"
another reason i wanted to know is because i wonder how much work and all it would take if i wanted to get into football somehow...since i can't play the game, that would be sweet to be involved some other way.
i wonder what i'd have to do to be successful...let's say, at being a coach...? i'd have to know plays like the back of my eyelids right?
