Well, would you??? (http://nypost.com/style/39213.htm)
Personally, I'd say HELL NO!!! Thank god I have no daughters™

Not just no, but HECK NO!
If she were so bound and determined to wear it she can pay for it herself - which ought to be enough discouragement in itself.

Not that dress, no.
As stated above, if she paid for it herself, I would have to raise my objections, but I couldn't stop her from buying it.
I could arrange for the school to not ler her in.
Ultimately, its not because I think the dress is indecent. I think we freak aout about sexuality too much in this country.
I think its a bad prom dress because there is a small percentage of teenage boys who think (especially with alcohol, but some don't need it to have this thought) that a girl who wears a dress like that "Wants it" or is "asking for it". Since I can't control those boys, I would try to take that route in reasoning with my daughter. A night out with the girls in college with her own money, I'd say I don't like the dress, but whatever. But at a prom? With boys? No way. I was a teenage boy, I know how some of those barely ape level peers of mine thought.
BUt honestly, what does that say about the parents whose daughter doesn't have the common sense or values to see that dress as too edgy? I think they would have to look at themselseves and say "Ok, we missed something here."

Funny how guys can be like: "Oh that chic is so hot, look at that outfit!" and then turn around and go: "My daughter would never be allowed to wear that!!!"
Mine? No...not as long as they're living under my roof they're not.

How is that funny?
We know what guys are like, that's why we would never let em wear that. I don't think that's strange at all.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I just find it sort of interesting that's all. I can't say I'm not the same way, but I know for sure my daughter wouldn't be allowed to wear that in public.
I see your point as well Knight. Guys are just that way, and so...we also feel the need to protect our daugthers from guys like us. Heh. Interesting cycle.

Yup...instead, perhaps us guys should shape up so that girls can wear whatever they want without fear of being ogled?

Alot (most) of girls want to be ogled though. They may say they don't, but they love the attention. Otherwise, what really is the point of wearing a dress that makes your boobs hang out? They just don't want the dirty scrub dudes looking. That's where women/girls are hypocritical.

I just wanted to also add that she also couldn't wear it for $495.
If I were struggling for money, and that was the cheapest dress I could find, (let's say it actually costs 100 dollars) then I'd have to think long and hard about it. Maybe even get it altered.
But why should I pay more money for less fabric!

That would actually be ok, as long as it was cool with everyone. I think we empahszie nudity and sex and being shocking, when they are natural states of being.
That's not to say that its always appropriate.
My objections to the dress are listed above. It has nothing to do with my own values.

Lets all just skip the prom. Strip naked, rent limos, get drunk and have sex. Does anyone ever stay for the whole thing anyway?
Then your kids could be home by 11. :D

I never did, I went to three Proms.
I went to 5 (freshman through my first yearin college with a girl who was in HS..I'm a bad man) and usually, the girls were just interested in who was crowned king and queen. I was just interested in the food that I would normally ever eat at home (Coq au vin? Yum. But my mom would never make that!). After 8:30 or (dinner at 6, dancing at 7), it was like.....ok....now what?
Although the dialogue wasn;t actually this, here's what the converstaion essentially was:
"Ok now what?"
"Lets go to (insert your choice: a party, the beach, a party on the beach, the rich kid's hotel room, the limo, my house cause my parents are away) and get drunk and have sex."
"o.K."

See, that's harsh,. What a girl wears generally gives you no insight into their morals. Perhaps she lies to shock people. Perhaps she is doing ti for attention. Perhaps it is just to piss people off.
But the reason this dress is bad is because there are men who assume it means she is willing to have sex. And of those barely cognitive idiots who make such an assumption, there are a small percentage who are dangerous because they truly believe that the girl is 'asking for it'. Which is sad, but true.
And THAT is why my daughter would not be allowed to wear the dress. Not because it offends my tastes, its because she or I cannot control other people's reactions to it. And why put yourself in a situation where you could be in danger?

I want to add that if your daughter picks out that dress, it's too late!
What you dont want to be seen has already BEEN seen!
I agree with Jared in that it's the image and the interpritation of that image that can be so dangerous. Some guys will assume that any girl in that dress is easy and be drawn to that if for no other reason than to try and take advantage of that perceived situation.
However, having a teenage daughter myself, I can attest that to them, image is everything. At least at her school. She would tell you that almost all of the kids dress which-ever way to express who they really are. The punks, or whatever they call themselves, for example, dont dress all in black for just it's shock value, but because they really want that lifestyle.
One of her ex-friends turned to the all black look, with peircings everywhere, and awful makeup. She only dates guys who for some reason, seem to keep getting arrested. She's 14, pregnant, and already expelled for several reasons. And she is HAPPY with how her life is turning out!!!
Now she would'nt be caught dead in such a dress, but my point is that for them image IS everything at that age. I think a girl in that dress IS saying something, and it isnt,"Look at me! I'm a good girl!"

Exactly. See my thoughts on that in my first post. At what point do the parents go "Hmm....we missed a talk or two with our daughter, if she doesn't understand why we disapprove of this dress."
As for your daughter's friend...well, I dunno. My experience (with teenage boys at camp) is that they SAY they want to project a certain image, but then they turn around and complain that they are misjudged by their appearance. Which is true, but I think they just want something to ***** about. When I ignored their appearance and just talked to them, they are generally good kids. They are just trying to fit in. Girls are different though. Ultimately, I think it all comes down to how secure they are as a person, and that comes from stability at home.

Absolutly!!! Great post.
You see, we HAD that talk with our daughter. That's why I know she wouldnt wear that dress.
As for her friend, her home life is not good to say the least. He mother being vary sick is part of it, but thet just dont seem to care much for their kids well-being. Deep down, this girl is also a great kid, but the influences in her life have just become too great, for whatever reasons. It's really sad to see the turn she made.
Speak of the devil! I have to go get my daughter from school. I'll reply more later if you want to get into it more.

Very ugly dress and you would be a slut if you wore it, sorry Jared, you dont wear something like that to piss people off or whatever - the only statement ANY woman would make wearing a dress like that is that "I AM A WHORE" (with bad taste :D )
And no way in hell would I let my daughter wear or BUY that dress - but my daughter has enough fashion sense, if nothing else, where I wouldnt have to worry about it and she would look a billion times better than that thing modeling it -

I seriously tried to be on the other side of the line with this topic, tried to think of some things that would make it ok for said daughter to wear said dress.
I can't. That dress is uglier than sin. Personally, I can only think of about 2 girls from back in highschool that had the guns to fill out that dress. All she would need to do is turn around to fast and the breast parade would begin... terrible dress. I wouldn't let my daughter, my wife, my son, or my dog wear that piece o' shiz.
It kinda of reminds me of American Gladiators for some reason....
