Let's post some of our favorite types of music, artist's; exchange ideas in music, let one another know about some good tunes.

My favorite music is probably Reggae....the current King of Reggae has to be Lucky Dube.

why not rap or opera?

not trying to change your mind, just curious.

I used to hate opera, but seeing it live at least opened my mind to it.

I grew up with really old school rap. Like Power 99 in Philly in the early 80's old school. Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, Kwame, LL Cool J, Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew, Erik B & Rakim, EPMD, Slick Rick, #rd Bass, etc etc etc.

yet I like Bon Jovi, so I am curious as to why you dislike these two particular forms?

This should be an interesting thread.

Jarred, I have Honestly "tried" ...listened and watched and given opera and rap a chance, maybe if I "understood" opera it would be different. As for Rap, every song "sounds " the same even if the words are different.

P.S. I grew up on the Beatles....showing my age, but I am really glad I was a kid when I was a kid, these days too much of the artists end up being a flash in the pan:(

Blame the short attention span of your average record buyer. When I managed at Border's, I actually had a conversation with a customer about maybe purchasing the new cd of an artist that I had remembered he purchased previously. He looked at me straight faced and said: "why would another cd from them? I already have one. I want something new and different"

I guess being a completeist is a foreign term these days.

Jared, youve named some classics. A few weeks ago, ESPN did one of their highlights of the week to Rakim's "Microphone Fiend", I had some kids tell me that song was "cool for an old song." :D

I listen to everything from Outkast to Mellencamp...from Mozart to Korn...from Donnell Jones to Rob Zombie. I dont listen to Country...thats about it...

Everything except country and opera. My dads a major rock fan ( aerosmith, pearl jam, pink floyd, led zeppelin) so some of that rubbed off on me. the only 'country' I semi-like are a few songs from the eagles. Im also an avid hip hop listener, so stop bashing it! ;)

heard that... I mean, the first great number of times I'd turn to a different channel (have XM, good stuff)... but one day when I was... well, in a 'kinder' state of mind, I caught some of the words to it and I kinda dig it now, too...

Yep, look for these songs:

Stockholm Syndrome
Showbiz
Newborn
Space Dementia
Citizen Erased
Butterflies & Hurricanes

Or just buy one of their albums (although they're imports in the US)...
Those songs I've mentioned are all gems.

new rock band that seems to take a lot of cues from early 80's pop-rock new wave. Gary Neuman, The Cars, The Knack. Even the production values are retro. But the ironic lyrics and guitars sounds are all kind of post punk (R.E.M., The Replacements, Husker Du). Basically a modern version of a rock meets alternative pop band.

Actually, country has come a long way in terms of production, and lyrical content. It is still way too earnest for my tastes usually, but at least it isn't so hokey anymore. A lot of it sounds like late 70's/early 80's pop rock with steel and slide guitars. I hear lots of the Eagles, Poco, America, James Taylor, along with some Bruce Springsteen, Journey. Then they just throw some country influences into that. Its better than that tinny sounding tear in my beer stuff. in my opinion.

I have also done sports talk, Classic Rock, new rock, and news talk.

I hear ya, just can't help but tell that joke whenever I can... I'm a student of music (once seriously), and what you say is true... all forms have evolved, some into lesser entities... country has the small distinction of being able to move on without completely losing it's roots... it is, tho, a 'meatmarket' in the sense that just about anyone who can carry a tune with some conviction can get notice in the C&W world alot faster than just about anything else... R&B/Rap is really close in that matter, but it seems that it's usually $$$ or fame that pre-exists before you get into the 'herd' that gets heard in that genre.... when you say new rock, just what would you put in there?... or 'who' might be easier... I'll look for the above tunes and give 'em a listen as well, thanx... *rubs hands together*... gonna start talkin' tuneage... :D...
