View Full Version : Music that you dislike & why...

I'm sure that there is a band or artist who's music you absolutely cannot bring yourself to like. Who is that group/artist. Why do you dislike their music?
This is not about a genre, it's about any group/artist. Hence, "I hate all rap it's stupid" will not cut it.
Here's my example:
I cannot understand why anyone likes Nickleback. I could have wrote those lyrics on a bad night of drinking. For some reason Chad Kroger feels compelled to scream out of tune in nearly every radio song that they have out. They are just plain awful.
or
Audioslave drives me crazy. Since when did the boys from Rage become lounge lizards? Chris Cornell's voice drives me bonkers. There is no escape from them on the airwaves either.
Feel free to argue with me if you like these bands too. That's where the fun is...

Nickelback also has a penchant for mysoginistic lyrics.
I can't stand Pink Floyd. I understand that many people think they are great, but their music makes me sleepy. Too laid back and spacey.
Britney Spears: Well, let see... thin voice, limited range, picks unmelodic songs, not an artist, but a performer.
Celine Dion: Wasted her admittedly great voice on bad tunes. Also, the least soulful singer I have ever heard. Ugly.
Jennifer Lopez: See Spears, Britney
Mariah Carey: over sings. Could use a lesson in subtlety from Roberta Flack. Hasn't picked a good song since about 1996 or so.
P.Diddy or whatever the hell he calls himself now. If he could rap half as well as he produces talent, he'd be awesome. But alas........

Jessica Simpson - not so much her singing, but her head bob/roll thing and her arm waving motions when she is singing drives me crazy.

Any music from "American Idol" Those songs in a word "suck"
Coldplay bothers me, all their whining and droning. They ought to change the name of their band to "My ****** Hurts"
I don't dislike it as much as I don't understand the allure of Rap music. Never got into it. I know millions of people love it and that is fine. It just isn't for me.

Kid Rock
He is completely awful. Nearly every song he writes is about himself.
Here I will write the next Kid Rock song:
My name is Kid Rock. I've got lots of money cause I'm Kid Rock. My lyrics suck but it does'nt matter cause I'm Kid Rock. Ya I'm Kid Rock and you're not. :P

I will not say that you are wrong, but perhaps you would get a better appreciation for their music in relation to their contemporary artists of the era. If you actually see sheet music, and compare it to say.....the Roling Stones or The Animals, you'll see that the Beatles were FAR more complex than any of those bands.
Just try that and see if you chnage your mind.

Jared's absolutely right about Diddy...the man cannot sing or Rap..I often wonder how in God's name he made it in this business. I know that B.I.G had alot to do with it, but he remained popular after Biggie died...strange..
As well...Mariah Carey does tend to oversing her songs...her image as a door-handle amkes her less appealing too
I must disagree on Celine Dion...she is not very attractive, but her music puts me in the mood...what can I say, I'm a romantic..
Mario - Let me love you, the re-mix, the re-re-mix...enough is enough, the whining and crying, OMG somebody do us a favor and put something in his mouth..
Seether- Monotone voice and senseless lyrical content...it really bothers me when I could have wrote better lyrics..

Dude! I do not believe that you have heard much of the Beatles Catalogue. And it doesn't seem as if you understand where they fit into history.
Liverpool lads, they were exposed to American Rock and Roll in the 1950's by the sailors who brought home records from the USA. They were influenced by Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, BB King, and on and on. They grew up dirt poor, around tough mother butlers. A 15 year old Paul saw John for the first time singing lead for Johnny and the Moondogs. On a break, Paul riffed out a Chuck Berry song on the guitar, and he was instant. Paul brought around his young friend George, they were golden. With Pete best on drums, the Silver Beatles got a long gig in Germany. Long hours, long nights playing, they honed their skills. John, the artist, brought Stu Sutcliffe along. Stu could not play, but was an awesome dude. They met Astrid Kirchner, a german artist Stu fell in love with. She got them to grow their hair, and where all black with cowboy boots. Back in London, they got in a brawl with a group of Teddy Boys, Stu suffered a brain injury that would kill him. At the Star Club in Hamburg, they got drunk, played constantly, baited the German patrons, and did Dexidrine a lot. They were becoming quite proficiant musicians. Rare tapes of them at the Star Club are awesome, and reveall their irreverant roots. The night those tapes were made, Pete Best (the only one who refused to grow his hair out) took the night off. His replacement was the drummer from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. A bloke from Liverpool named Richard Starkey. An old man at 26, compared to George's 17 years. They ended up burning down a theatre/bar they worked at. Deported to England.
At home, they drifted, looked for work. On a lark, they did a reunion gig at the Cavern, a nightclub owned by Pete Best's mom. Their years in Germany had turned them into polished musicians. The crowd went wild. Brian Epstein became their manager. At an audition with George Martin, they aced it. Only Martin said Pete Best was no good. They hired Richard Starkey immediatly. There was a riot. George sported a black eye on their first album cover. The song writing duo of Lennon-McCartney was groundbreaking. Their songs produced by Martin, were a new sound, never heard before. Maybe taken for granted today, those boys CHANGED music forever. For 2 years, they were a huge hit in England. They hosted Pop Go The Beatles on the BBC... (like American Bandstand). By the time 1964 rolled around, and they came to America shortly after JFK was assasinated, they had 3 albums of material. They had moved past their initial hits, and progressed rapidly. Still, they must play their older hits on the road. USA 1964 - Twist and Shout, All My Loving, If I Fell, Can't Buy Me Love, A Hard Days Night! These songs changed everyhing!
Elvis was a superstar. The Beatles took it further. They influenced everyone. The Stones, the Byrds, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and on. EVERYONE.
Later, The Beatles met Bob Dylan. He introduced them to Reefer. It changed them and their music. Rubber Soul was the result. The earlier love songs were replaced with soulfull tunes that had lyrics with a message. Listen to Revolver, and tell me it is all silly love songs. Day Tripper. We Can Work It Out. And then Sgt PeppersLonely Hearts Club Band. Mr Kite, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Fixing a Hole. That album had the classic She Is Leaving Home. Old Grey haired musical experts were dumbfounded. They, as one, declared Paul McCartney had written a masterpiece, he was a musical Genius.
The White Album. Hey Jude. Magical Mystery Tour with the accompanying movie that was the first actual MTV type of film. Revolution! Ballad of John and Yoko! Let It Be! Happiness is a Warm Gun!
Abbey Road! A masterpiece!
Sorry to go on, so. But it is obvious, you are unfamiliar with the Beatles music and who they were in musical history, and the roads they paved.
I doubt Mick Jagger, or Bono, Or David Bowie, or Elton, Or any truly great musician would acknowledge your statement as accurate. I wanted to set you straight.
As I see it.

Dude! One of the things that killed the Beatles, was how technical their music became. They could not go on the road and play in concert what they created with George Martin in the studio. Paul wanted to get back to their roots, but they could not tour and play the music they created on Abbey Road, or half of what they did on Sgt. Peppers. They were pioneers. I could play for you songs you have never heard by them that would change your mind. Like you said earlier, "Their popular songs sound all the same" to you. Though I disagree, I see that you are rateing them based on some "popular songs". They had hundreds of songs. The radio stations only play the same 7 or 8 over and over.
I guarentee you, the members of Phish would NEVER claim to be more talented than those boys from Liverpool. And then again, you make the mistake of comparing pioneers from nearly fifty years ago with contemporary musicians.
You have so much to absorb, young jedi!
I have 12 Fleetwood Mac albums, from BEFORE they were destroyed by Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Mick used to drum for a blues group with Jeremy Spencer, Peter Green, and John Mc Vie. The first album I have by them is from 1967. Christine Perfect, who played with an old black bluesman, Chickenshack, joined Fleetwood Mac around 1970. She married John McVie and became Christine McVie. They took on Bob Welsh, and the sound changed. Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green left. Point is... there is a lot of musical history out there for you all to learn. And not just history, but MUSIC!
No offense, but in the vast scheme of the musical world... Phish is just another band. And they know it. They would never claim superstar status.
Same as Terry Bradshaw never got the big bucks back in the day, there are plenty of awesome musicians that never did either. That don't mean they were not as good as some punk like Kid Rock. Just because he milks the system, and gets the attention, and the limelight, dont mean he is any good. And he is not.
It never ceases to amaze me when I see how wealthy some of these no talent shmoes are! Menudo, Boys2Men, Justin Timberlake, and countless rappers that I have no idea who they are ( except Flavor Flav!). These clowns play no instruments, write no songs, have no good voice, and yet they make it filthy rich on their transparent image. Put out a video with beautiful women, throw a few gangs signs, talk (not sing) a bunch of lyrics that dont mean squat, look mean right at the camera, and hold your pants up with your hand in your pocket as you shuffle down the street at the end. Hundreds of thousands of stupid kids then buy your inartistic bullcrap, and bingo! You be a big star! Thus encouraged, you make more bullcrappy videos, treat more women like dogs, talk (not sing) your way through more crap... all the way to the bank!
Gone are the days where talent is required. Now, one just needs to look good, and act tough. Can't sing? No problem... Dude, you can rap!
Remember Jimi Hendrix? Not one rapper out there has as much talent in his whole body as Jimi had in one hand.
But hey! If that is what the youth of America want to buy, who am I to dispute it! You go, kids! Spend Daddy's money on the next Ludicriss CD.
On a lot of levels, Musical Culture today is a wasteland.
But all is not lost!
Remember Santana and Rob Thomas teaming on SUPERNATURAL?
Best song in the last 15 years.
Smashmouth - Walking on the Sun?
There is still some good songwriting happening... just not like in the old days.
Remember when the Eagles put out album after album full of great songs?
The Doobie Brothers? Lynerd Skynerd?
U2 just played Denver, and I guess they have some new stuff. I should check it out.
I am just an old dude, I remember the good, so I can not accept the bad.
You who accept the bad, because it is all you know, need to look backwards.
Just my 2 cents.

There are tons of bands and genres I can't stand (especially of music out today, I could just say anything on MTV). I'll name one that probably alot of people on here like and that's Linkin Park. I just don't get it. They have some decent lyrics but the music itself just gives me a headache. All their songs sound the same. Here's the Linkin Park song formula:
1. Start in with heavy guitar riff
2. Slow riff down
3. Queue guy to start rapping
4. Back to heavy guitar riff
5. Other guy starts screaming
6. Repeat steps 2-5
7. Bridge with DJ scratching
8. Repeat steps 2-5

Agreed. Carter Beauford might be the best drummer that most people have never heard of - so much that I think his soulful and intricate backdrop is responsible for a large part of the band's universal appeal.

true. I don't really care for Dave Matthews voice, and I have no idea what his lyrics are about, but I just really dig the band. I was very disappointed in his last effort with the new band. I undertsand the need to try new things, but since I liked his band more than him anyway, I was not really into that album.
