He was one of the greats when it came to country. His career had all but ended well-before he died, but that last remake of NIN's "Hurt" left a lasting impression on many and helped seal his legacy as a musical genius.

Johnny Cash was awesome.

I'm not much into country myself but he was in a category of his own.

Everyone has been biting his style but no one will ever be CASH!!

Sorry to disagree, but I think he butched that song, it was such a personal song for Trent Reznor and I can not see how he would let anyone do that song... I just wasn't "feeling it"...

Actually, Johnny's version is a cover of a Soundgarden tune, from their 1991 album "Badmotorfinger"

Did NIN do a version of it as well? I know they/he does covers, most notably a wild and creepy version of Queen's "Get Down, Make Love".

Oh, and Cash is considered country, but he transcended it long ago. He is simply a great American musical artist. He is in the same class as Sinatra, Guthrie, Dylan, Springsteen, Gaye, and Wonder as artists who really have no true musical boundaries, but were influential to so many different genres. One of those that even if you don't like the music, its hard to deny the greatness.

Plus, as I have stated on this board before, anyone who could write the lyric "But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" is quite possibly the baddest man on the planet. That's beyond bad ass.

Just a quick note, Trent was interviewed after the Johnny Cash cover of "Hurt" and he had nothing but praise for it.

I know they/he does covers, most notably a wild and creepy version of Queen's "Get Down, Make Love". --- i was thinking of Johnny's version of "Rusty Cage'' from his "Unchained" cd --- he also did a few other covers on that cd --- "Rusty Cage" is so Johnny Cash, i thought S/G covered Johnny --- entonces --- i had NIN mixed up with S/G --- as well as the original artist with the cover artist --- i prefer the S/G version --- thanks for the clarification Jared --- az
