This here is a thread to put all your favorite Rod Smith quotes.

It seems like Rod always says something you can use in everyday life.

They should put his quotes in fortune cookies or something.

I'm just going to get these from the main Bronco site.

OK, here we go.

about young receivers making the team
"It's hard to get in the NFL, but the thing they have to realize is (that) it's harder to stay,"

Shannon Sharpe on Sirus radio had one question for Smith -- would he surrender his No. 80 to Rice?
"'Everybody says you should give it to Jerry,'" Smith recalled Sharpe saying. "I said, 'Why is it his number? So every No. 80 in the world is his?' He's like, 'Well, the people say you should give it to him, he's a legend.'

"I said, 'Sharpe, that's like somebody saying that this guy over here is a better husband and father than you, why don't you give him your wife. You know what I'm saying? It don't make sense!' We joked about that for a while."

When asked if he was going to be in the league as long as Jerry Rice.
"Hell no, I'm not even going to coach at 42."

About learning stuff from other players
"I always try and learn," Smith said. "I explain it to them how over the last 10 years, every guy that's come in here, I try and take something from that guy. I try to put it in my guy. So take some from me, take something from Ashley, take something from even some of the other rookies. Take something from them that's working for them and try it."

Rod's team first attitude after setting Bronco record for touchdowns
"I really don’t want to talk about me," he said. "I didn’t want to talk about me last week, and I don’t this week. I want to talk about our team."

Talking about rookies nursing "injuries" (Clarett)
You can't make the club if your in the tub.

After Lelie's surfing endzone celebration
"He's representing from Hawaii. He probably gets some free pineapples out of the deal. Maybe he'll give me one because I like pineapples."

Talking about Ed McCaffrey retiring and Ashley Lelie

OK, that's it for now. I'll dig up some more later. In the meantime, Go ahead and add some more quotes to the Rod Smith Quote Collection!!!

Those were cool. My favorite ever was when he was talking smack about Eddie Kennison either last year or the year before I think, and he had his rings on and said something I don't even remember but it was awesome. Rod is the Broncos king of smack, he does it in this sneaky, classy way.
Here's to another season of great Rod Smith lines!

First off, here is what Kennison said...
"We'd rather be 11-1 frauds than 7-5, you know, hanging from a string from Mike Shanahan sucking on his behind all the time. This weekend - y'all can quote me, y'all can do what you want to do - but we're going to put something on their ***, you can believe that. You think I'm not serious? Huh, I'm about to get emotional right now just thinking about it. Put something on their ***, that's what we're going to do."

And Rod's response....
"This was pretty big talk from a guy that once quit the team 12 hours before kickoff 8 weeks into the season." Says Rod Smith, "He quit the night before a game. We were 4-4 and we needed him. I had to go out there and I had two rookies and a third-year guy playing receiver and I'd rather go out there with some guys who wanted to play with their hearts."

Smith held up his two huge Super Bowl rings for Kennison and said: "Before you start popping off at the mouth you ought to get yourself some of these."

Now that is classic Rod.

After tackling Julius Peppers in last years Carolina game

Ashley Lelie said ""I just saw Rod give it his all to get down there and even get a chance to get that touchback. That just kind of fired up the offense and everybody else around him to give that 110 percent like he did."

Then Rod said
"You see a lot of guys at the end congratulating me for tackling this dude just for hustling, but that's what we all should be doing anyway," Smith said. "For me, that's the way I play football."

"They spent their money. They can go in there and boo all they want. We know we have to play for 60 minutes. It's hard when you hear that, but at the same time, they paid for the seats, so they have a right to do whatever they want, but I know for a fact that every guy is out there doing everything they can to be great -- not good, but great. It's hard to hear, but at the same time, you're always going to have that. In the end, those same people are patting you on the back, so you wonder, 'Are they really fans or not?'"

He knows.

Rod is so right on that one. Every possible crazy, inconceivable, and just plain bad thing that can happen in the course of a game and in personel management has happened to us since Elway retired. To name a few...

Randy Moss catches a hail mary short of the goal line before halftime but laterals the ball over his shoulder while being gang tackled by several Broncos. The ball lands perfectly into the hands of Mo Williams who scores untouched.
After an improbable comeback from a 9 point deficeit to a tough Miami team, Denver kicks a 53 yard field goal with less than a minute left. On the insuing drive, an errant Jay Fiedler pass goes through the hands of John Mobley and is perfectly cradled by Dedrick Ward in field goal range. Miami kicks the game winner with no time left.
Monday night against the Ravens, the Broncos try a record distance field goal (and why not with Elam?) that falls short and is returned 109 yards for a touchdown by Chris McAlister; the longest play in NFL history.
Week 2 of the 2004 season: after an impressive last minute drive the Broncos are in position to win the game against a touch Jaguars team. With a timeout left, they decided to run off the remaining time on the clock to give them the last play of the game. Instead, Quentin Griffin fumbles the ball, and the Broncos lose a heartbreaker 7-6.
After putting up 500 yards of total offense against the Chiefs in week 5 of 2003, Denver is robbed of 2 yellow flags for obvious block in the back infractions and Dante Hall gets the winning TD on a 94 yd punt return TD.
2000 season: Hoping to make a good start after the Retirement of Elway, the Broncos are bitten by the injury bug. NFL MVP Terrell Davis suffers a season ending, and eventually career ending, ACL tear. TE (and eventual HoFer) Shannon Sharpe, SS Eric Brown, and several others are also lost for large parts of the season.
Deltha: After an impressive Pro Bowl year (which included a NFL record 4 int game) CB Deltha O'Neal got star-struck and fell from grace among the coaches and on the field. While still putting up great plays on occasion he also played with a far lower level of competition. He was eventually traded and continues to show off amazing ability along side inconceivably poor mistakes in Cincy.
The Search for a CB: besides O'Neal, Denver has gone on a long and fruitless search for a quality CBs. Names include Chris Watson, Darnell Walker, Dale Carter, and Terrell Buckley.
...and much much more

I'm sure you guys can think of more examples. If you want I can provide more, but I've made this list before and it is tiring. Shannon Sharpe's tipped pass TD in the playoffs is another example.

Here's one from 12-8-2000 and the story to set it up:
Not surprisingly, Mike Anderson has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his 251-yard rushing performance against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

What is surprising is that the Denver Broncos rookie running back is the first player to win the award in consecutive weeks since the NFL instituted the award in 1984. Anderson also was honored last week after rushing for 195 yards against the Seahawks at Husky Stadium on Nov. 26.

What is shocking is that Anderson, a 27-year-old ex-Marine, is the least of Shawn Springs' worries as the Seahawks prepare for their Sunday rematch against Anderson and the Broncos at Mile High Stadium. Don't get Springs wrong. The last thing the Seahawks cornerback wants to do is throw his 195-pound body into Anderson's thundering thighs.

It's just that for Springs, priority one is dealing with wide receivers Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey.

“True, the running back coming out of the backfield can kill you," Springs said Thursday after practice. "But when you're playing Denver you've got a lot to worry about. Like Rod Smith. Like McCaffrey. Anderson might have killed us last time, but Smith and McCaffrey have been doing major damage against us a lot longer."

That's not just a cornerback being a cornerback. Smith leads the league with 1,339 receiving yards, and he and McCaffrey already have combined for 161 receptions -- making them the most productive tandem in the NFL, with more catches than the Vikings' Cris Carter and Randy Moss (146) and the Rams' Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt (134).

As Springs pointed out, Smith is no stranger to the Seahawks. In his past five games against them, Smith has 35 receptions for 521 yards.

But two weeks ago, it was Smith playing like Anderson that really caught the Seahawks off guard and unprepared. Three times, Smith lined up in the backfield. The Seahawks had seen this before, but in previous games Smith would go in motion and end up at the line as a receiver just before the snap. This time, Broncos quarterback Gus Frerotte pitched the ball to Smith, who ran for 78 yards -- including a 50-yarder for a touchdown.

"We were not expecting that," Seahawks defensive coordinator Steve Sidwell said.

Neither was Smith, who had carried the ball 13 times for 95 yards in his first 5 1/2 seasons with the Broncos before running wild against the Seahawks.

"You think I like that?" Smith said with a laugh this week. "I'm running for my life. They've got Cortez Kennedy and (Michael) Sinclair and Chad Brown. Man, I'm not going to let those guys hit me, especially not square on. I'll be running out of bounds, or at least toward the sideline, hoping that they don't get me before I get there."

About Carswell....

"Every guy carried a piece of him out there on the football field tonight," wide receiver Rod Smith said. "We said that going in and we said that coming out."

"He's so blue collar and that's the way I am. I just love him out there playing with us going out there banging giving it up for the guys and the guys gave it up for him tonight."

"I'm scared to go see him," Smith said. "They're moving organs around and stuff; it's kind of frightening. I don't want to be in there and make him laugh."

I don't knwo if anyone else read it, but about a month ago, maybe 6 weeks now, there was a feature article on Smith in ESPN The Magazine, and while it touched on a variety of things, my favorite line was something like this

(I am paraphrasing, since I donate my read mags to the Navy clinic waiting room)

"Defensive backs don't fear or repsct me because of my speed or size, they respect me because they know if they don't, I'll make the play that breaks their teams back."

I like that. Not saying he is the best, but re-affirming that if you ignore him, it's a mistake.

The thing that's most impressive about Rod is, IT'S ALL ABOUT WINNING.

Even if it's a meaningless game like the Pro Bowl.

After missing a long pass from McNair that would have given the AFC a chance to win, he said...

"I was hurt, but I'm not worried about that," Smith said. "I wanted to win. ... I let my teammates down. I should have made that play."

"We could have won," Smith said. "We had too many missed opportunities, including mine."

"What makes you an overachiever?" Smith asks. "I never understood that word -- overachiever. That means you're doing something you're not supposed to be able to do, because obviously we were able to do it. It's just a matter of having the right opportunities.

"You don't know when you're going to get them, so you've got to be prepared for them at all times. You never know when this game is going to end, so you've got to go like it's your last day. And that's the way I've approached it. Every day I come in here, I look to make sure that my name's in my locker. That means I've got another day."

When Rod speaks, people listen...

"People ask me, 'What did you think about the draft picks?' I said, 'Dude, I don't watch.' I'm still kind of bitter," Smith said. "Some guys got drafted and they ain't played football in 15 years and I'm still waiting to get drafted. I'm still waiting to hear my name."

"If Ashley comes back, to me it's no big deal. If Ashley doesn't come back, to me it's no big deal," Smith said. "I love having him on my football team, I love when he's on the football field making those plays, because he's a talented guy. I think it would be a waste of his talent to not be on the football field during football season, but it's his business and he gets to make those business decisions for him and his family, and I can't knock that. Whatever his rationale for doing it, I support it.

"But at the same time, I support the Broncos and everything they do because this is my family."

"The age thing is going to always come up," Smith said. "I get tired of hearing about it becaue it doesn't matter. What different does it make how old you are if you can go out there and produce? That's the issue. If you're 23 and you (stink), is that good?"

IMO the second quote he is taking a swing at Rice for playing that long in his career. Sounds like he is saying that Rice should have retired already.

And in the first quote he doesnt see why he should give Rice his number, i understand not doing it, but not being able to see why is just plain rude in this case.

I dont respect Rod less for that nor do i think he is unclassy or anything i just thought those two comments were outta line a lil.

Well, Rod wasn't taking a swipe at Jerry for the age thing, he was more taking a swipe at himself. Saying that he just wouldn't be able to do it. Rod has always been humble like that.

And the comments about the number were more directed at the media, not Rice.

here's another Quote from Rod to clear things up.

"You guys (the media) talked about it," Smith said. "I never talked about it, (Rice) never talked about it, Mike (Shanahan) never talked about it. So it was never an issue. He never brought it up. We still haven't even brought it up now."

Source: http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=4207

Rod is very direct and honest to a fault. If he comes off as rude, that's just because he tells it like it is. Personally, thats one of the things I love about Rod.
Especially in the NFL where every other player sounds like they are reading lines from a NFL cliche book. Rod straight up tells you the deal.

Here's one from the Denver Post.

Moments earlier, as Smith trotted away from a practice he would dare not miss, I uncouthly commented how distinguished the 11-year veteran looked with all those new flecks of gray hair sprouting from his scalp. "Stress," explained Smith, wincing. "I didn't have gray hair until we lost the AFC championship game."

The agony of losing to Pittsburgh and missing a shot at another championship ring aged him, Smith said, before changing the subject by inspecting my balding pate and conservatively guessing my age at 80.

Returning a verbal jab at Smith, who enjoys sparring with foes great and small, I asked if he was too ancient to remain the No. 1 receiver for the Broncos.

"What is a No. 1 receiver? I don't understand that," said Smith, growing irritated, but maybe not for the reason you might think.

"We expect big things. He expects things. And I expect a lot more of what he did last year," receiver Rod Smith said. "We don't expect him to be some superhero. If he goes out there and tries to please everybody, then we're in trouble because he can't.

The veteran wide receiver was prepared for the critics in the locker room who might want to make light of his acting skills.

"The guy got like 30 yards. You can't be mad at him," Smith said. "But at the same time, you're like, 'Look, man, don't ever run out of bounds again. That sideline is not for us; it's for the quarterbacks."

one more reason why Rod Smith IS the man!!!

Even if Plummer is unaffected, he has supporters who are bothered by speculation his job eventually will become jeopardized.

"You guys create all that negative energy and you bring that in here," Rod Smith, the Broncos' veteran receiver, said in the team's locker room after a convincing 35-10 preseason victory over Tennessee on Aug. 19. "I hate it. Don't bring that in here. Let our guys play and let the coaches decide who should play."

"I like winning. I want the stats for the most wins as a receiver. That's more important to me than anything."

Well, God Bless Rod Smith, here's the latest addition to the Rod Smith quote collection.

When asked today what he thought about those fans who are asking for Jay Cutler to replace Jake Plummer right now Rod Smith responded:

"The people who said it are morons. so whoever said it then that's what I think. I mean the guy is a great quarterback. He's great for our team and like I tell our guys every week it's up to us to make him great and we didn't do a good job of that last week. It's up to the other 10 guys to make him look great and we gotta find a way to do that this week."

"Tommy told me I scored the game-winning touchdown," Smith said. "Thanks, Tommy."

Rod about A.I.

THE QUESTION: Wide receiver Rod Smith goes to a lot of Nuggets games and he'd love to see Allen Iverson get traded to Denver.

He said he knows there would be questions about team chemistry, "but he's one of the best basketball players in the country and you always want the good players on your team. If he's there, trust me, I'm going," Smith said.

"I don't know if he can play some football. He used to play it in high school, so we could use him here," Smith cracked. "I don't know, maybe he can take my spot and get us a win, I don't care, we need a win right now. So, anything we can do to get a win. If his coming to town helps our football team, tell him to come on. I know it's not a money thing for him. He's got enough of that."

Great list. Just wanted to point out, it was Denard Walker, not Darnell.

Veteran long-snapper Mike Leach received some love Wednesday. He was named the Broncos' special-teams player of the week after a bad snap by his counterpart cost the Cincinnati Bengals an extra point with 41 seconds remaining, the difference in the Broncos' 24-23 win.

"The only reason why he got the award was the other guy messed up," Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith said. "No, I've always appreciated the job Mike does. He's the only snapper I've ever seen who actually tries to tackle. I just wish I could do it so I could take his job. You could play 40 years being a snapper."

Recently....

"Last year I couldn't even sleep ... because my leg was throbbing all night," Smith said. "So, basically, I stayed up the whole year last year and that's not good. That's what makes you old, when you're not getting any rest and you've got to go out here and fight with these young dudes. "

"That's what gets you run out of the league real quick."

Smith said his hip was such a mess -- torn labrum, frayed cartilage, bone spurs, floating fragments -- that his surgeon couldn't believe he had played at all last season.

"And I'm just like, I feel I'm tougher than most people," Smith said. "Pain to me is secondary. If I can get through it for three hours on Sundays, I'm going to give these guys all three hours of everything I got. I did that. And at the same time I beat myself up in the process."
The only way I'm going to go on the football field is if I'm healthy. And if I go on the football field and I'm healthy, I expect to do the same things I did in 2005. Not 2006, but what I did in 2005 was good enough to get us to the AFC championship game and it got myself in the Pro Bowl, so I expect to get to that level again," he said.

"But at the same time I've got to be smart ... because I put myself through a lot of strain individually to try to do what's best for our team and it might have hurt me."

Smith, who kept his hip problem a secret until the offseason, said he never felt good in 2006.

"Honestly, it never was more than 100 percent during any game in the whole year," he said. "But it's no excuse ... because if I'm out there, my thing is to make plays.

"But at the same time, I realized how much it limited me after I went back and looked at it. And I said I can't do that to myself again, because it's putting way too much strain on my body to try to make the routine plays that I was used to making; it made things a lot harder."

Smith ditched his crutches about 10 days ago and is riding a stationary bike and doing elliptical work while his teammates go through practices.

Retirement isn't something that's crossed Smith's mind.

"If you can be productive, that's what the coaches want, and if I'm not productive, trust me, the coaches don't have to fire me. I'm going to leave on my own," Smith said. "But I honestly feel that I can be productive, and that's the only reason why I'll go back out there."

Ever since joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 1994, Smith has never missed a single day of the team's offseason strength and conditioning program. He insists his mark is still intact.

"I am gaining strength and I am conditioning," he said. "I lift. I run every day. And I'm Aquaman. I swim every single day. Trust me. It all counts."

Just read through the whole thread.

*sigh*

Though this situation is certainly not as extreme, what's helped me get through many funerals is just keeping in mind that if "X" hadn't been such a great person to begin with, we wouldn't be so sad to see him/her go.

Summed up perhaps in more concise and contemporary terms...

"Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened."

(An appropriate quote to sum up the player that was Rod Smith, if you ask me ...even if it didn't come from his mouth like the rest of the quotes in this thread.)

...To Rod!!! :salute:

Thought I would bump this thread, one of my favorites ever
What I might miss most about Rod is his classy, classic smack talk :fight:

"I don't get paid a dime," he said. "This is personal for me. My pay is by them letting me come through those big gates for 14 years."

Class act Rod, class act. :salute:

Bumparooni.... Love this thread as well... my fav quote as mentioned in another thread

"After M. Bell went out of bounds at the end of a 34-yard run Rod Smith let him have it for going out instead of burying his helmet into safety Lamont Thompson.

"There is no one on our football team who has the right to run out of bounds on his own unless it's the quarterback," Smith said. "You always fight for the extra yard. You never know. They might miss the tackle. They might slip. So, he didn't know that, so we let him slide on that one."

"The guy got like 30 yards. You can't be mad at him," Smith said. "But at the same time, you're like, 'Look, man, don't ever run out of bounds again. That sideline is not for us; it's for the quarterbacks."

Bell told Rod he would never do it again "
