Duke, Michigan State, Texas, and UConn are some of the top teams this year. Duke Plays Texas in early December. Duke and UConn will most likely play within a week in the Preseason NIT. Texas vs Oklahoma and Michigan State vs Illinois will be some of the big conference games this year.

Duke is the big one, they are the #1 ranked team this year. I would also say UCONN, Texas, North Carolina. I also personally root for Air Force. I also root for Kansas, but was disappointed that they werent ranked coming into the season.

Thanks Draco and BlueDevils, I'll keep an eye out for those teams. If I remember they showed a game or two a week over here last year - in the middle of the night of course, so more work for the VCR.

I only got into American Sports a year and a half ago, first football, then baseball, a few NBA games and now College Football is begininning to get a hold over me too. I'm fast becoming a full time sports fan, what with my new found sports and keeping up with the old ones of soccer and rugby too!

I hope you don't mind me asking a few more questions.

How popular is College B'ball in comparison to the NBA and is there a big difference between the way they play?

The games are very similar. The main difference is the NBA 3-point line is longer than the college line. The NBA plays 4 12-minutes quarters, while college has 20 minute halfs. Also, the NBA allows 6 personal fouls until a player is kicked out, in college, it is 5.

The only reason I watch the NBA is to see how former Duke players are doing. College games (especially big rivalries, ex: Duke vs North Carolina, Kansas vs Missouri) are more exciting. The games are more meangingful (82 regular-season NBA games opposed to around 24 for college.)

Bahh Sooners will be nobodys this year when they face KU!

Nah for real's though, pay attention to the Jayhawks all ya'll.

We will be young and inexperienced and probably won't finish with a good enough record to garner a highs seed in the tournament due to the youth, but we will be exciting and probably can do some damage by the end of the year if the young pups start playing up to their talent level, which probably is asking alot at this point.

Self just pulled in the best recruiting class ever at KU anyways n terms of talent level coming in. Couple that with the impact CJ Giles will become and the great class Self pulled in last year as well.

incoming freshman;

Mario Chalmers 5 star, #1 PG, #2 overall
Julian Wright 5 star, #2 PF, #10 overall
Micah Downs 5 star, #4 SF, #14 overall
Brandon Rush 5 star, #3 SF, #13 overall
Roderick Stewart (transfer can play in Jan)

Enjoy your time on top of the Big East, Huskies. Just be glad that Bob Huggins got fired at Cincinnati, because otherwise, that spot would be ours.

As it is, we need to sign Andy Kennedy, pronto. This interim tag is killing our recruiting. As soon as we have a stable situation, Cincinnati will go right back to being a powerhouse. Just watch.

What I'm really hoping for is that we get Kennedy signed and then get O.J. Mayo, a local player with North College Hill High School. The kid is a monster.

Cincinnati = College Basketball Mecca. 'Nuff said.

Well, when you align yourself with teams like the Yankees, I guess it's easy to pick a good ship and set sail ;) You're not a UConn grad, are ya? I'm a UC grad, that's why they're my team.

I'm pretty sure any basketball fan knows this, but Cincinnati's best sport has been College Basketball for a number of years. With the Bearcats and the Xavier Musketeers within 5 miles of eachother, it's not hard to understand why. Xavier sent a team to the Elite 8 last year, and UC's been in the NCAA tourney 14 years in a row.

Shoulda coulda woulda whatever. :)

Understood - and just FYI - the being from CT explains the Yankees following, I hope and the Bronco thing stems from CT also - my ex is a HUGE broncos fan (we met when we were 19) and so I started watching the broncos with him cause sports was the only other thing that was enjoyable with him - i tell ppl the only two good things i got from that relationship was my son (well most of the time he's good) and the Broncos (and I got to keep most of the broncos stuff in the split, and after 9 years we accumulated a nice collection, although i let him have all the cards, 4 Elway rookies  )

Hehe, me either. I'm a ND football fan, but that's where the allegiance ends. The only college games I've been to other than UC football games (ugh) were Notre Dame and Southern Illinois games, and we only went to SIU games because my cousin was a quarterback for them about 20 years ago.

That was one of the best games I have seen for awhile. The second half was very intense. J.J. and Marshall kept getting into each others' faces. I thought at one point they were going to call a double Technical. B.C. fought and fought, but Shel and J.J. were clutch at the free throw line. I feel bad for anyone who missed it.

I saw the game. Very very awesome. I liked how JJ helped Marshall up.... it was kind of a slap in the face to him.

Crazy, crazy ending.

I don't get the foul situation.

FSU gets a technical for storming the court with time left. Then they give Duke a personal foul (I never caught why). Did they foul Duke so the crowd wouldn't affect the outcome? Hopefully someone will clarify everything. I'm somewhat confused why Duke didn't get the ball back after the technical.

Actually, historically, dominant teams (say the top 2) from smaller conferences do much better in the tournament than middle of the pack teams from power conferences.

The talent level is not so wide as you think. The rules regarding scholarships have led to a much wider spreading of talent.

George Mason plays extremely good basketball as a team. It all depends on if Tony Skinn is available. He was suspended because of the game against Hofstra.

Murray State though, should not be able to beat Maryland, 8 times out of 10.

I know some of the mid-majors have had some good runs the last couple seasons, like UW-Green Bay (I believe) getting to the sweet 16 last year. I just believe (and probably partially biased, being an ACC fan) that just because some smaller schools have nice regular season runs doesn't mean they should get in over power-conference schools where the level of play is much higher.

I think this year, though, non-conference schedules played a bigger role than conference RPI. Hence the reason Florida State at 9-7 in the ACC (and upsetting #1 Duke) was left out, but had a very week non-conference schedule. Memphis didn't play in a very tough conference, but due to playing Duke and at Texas, they had a very nice looking non-conference resume. Had they not played those games, and finished with the same record, they would probably have been a 3 or 4 seed.

I understand what you are saying, but I am not sure I was clear.

The level of play between, say the Big Ten, and the MAC is not as wide a chasm as you seem to imply.

The top team in the MAC or MVC, should be equal to or better than a middling power conference school, in most cases, like FSU, or Wisconsin.

Thus, the selection committee reflects this.

In the past, before RPI became a big deal, you HAD to win your conference unless you were in the ACC, PAC 10, Big East, Big X, Big 8 (now 12), the A 10, the old WAC, and maybe in a good year, the MVC.

And what would happen is, some school with a great record and a killer RPI who didn't win their league tourney would get passed over for some 17-12 school from a power conference. That 17-12 team would promptly get bounced by some mid major school, because they weren't really a great team (see Richmond vs Syracuse, 1990).

So, the selection committee, ever mindful of entertainment value and its relationship to ratings and income (and because the criticism was unrelenting), started looking at other things, and the picks in the last 10 years or so have been better, in my opinion.

I mean, too bad for Cinci, I guess, but they had chances to be a 21 or 22 game winner, by my count. In the brutual Big East (the best and deepest conference this season) that would have been a no brainer.

This shouldn't be just about conference, though. The fact of the matter is, the tournament only works because there's no upper or lower limit on who can get in from each conference. In theory.

In practice, we saw the selection committee exclude UC in favor of teams that are obviously inferior on the grounds that they would have been the 9th team in from the Big East. Look at UC's RPI. Strength of schedule. Quality of wins. And then compare that to the last 4 in, and you tell me whether you really think that UC didn't deserve to get in more than any one of those teams.

If you got in over Maryland, I'd be having this same discussion with someone else.

Or, who else do you exclude if UC and UM both get in?

Unless you do a pitiful football setup, where a minimum amount of wins automatically makes you post season eligible, this is about as good as it gets. I prefer this to no playoffs, don't you?

As it stands, 64 teams is already roughly 20%of all division I teams. That's kinda high. I'd like to see the old 32 team tournament come back. Closer to 10%. A more accurate reflection of the perecentage of teams who have a legit chance of wining it all. Man, would late season games be really neat to see.

I agree with Jared in general but I agree with whodey about Cinnci - there is no question they got screwed - and I think being the 9th team that would come from the Big E hurt them alot

It wasnt fair - there is at least one or two teams that are NOT conference winners taht are in the tourney with an at lg bid that Cinncy deserved (Airforce comes to mind w/o putting too much thought although I will admit I havent seen them ever play but something just tells me cinnci would kick their ass)

PLUS let me run this by you guys and see what you make of it

In each 4 divisions the break down of Conf Winners goes like this:

Atlanta - (duke) 9
Oakland - (memphis) 9
Minneapolis - (villanova) 10
Washington DC - (UCONN) 3

I would think at lg teams would be tougher since they made it in w/o winning a division but w/o throwing any BS out there - how do you at least not make it more even than that - that is a huge difference (just havent figured out if its in our favor or not - im leaning towards not)

Indiana gets a 6 seed? Nah, they're out. UC had a better record, a better RPI, and a better strength of schedule. So Indiana would be out.

As far as Maryland goes, look no further than Air Force.

The biggest problem with Cincy is who did you beat? Your best win is LSU....(before Christmas)...and West Virginia (who went 4-6 in its last 10 games).

Indiana beat Kentucky, Ohio State, Illinois, and Michigan State.

Again, dont lose to the likes of Dayton and Seton Hall and Im sure Cincy is probably in.

OU's Sampson tells players he's headed to Indiana
Posted: Tuesday March 28, 2006 3:53PM; Updated: Tuesday March 28, 2006 11:25PM

Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson could be moving north to take over for Mike Davis at Indiana.
Bill Frakes/SI

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana will hire Kelvin Sampson as its next basketball coach, delivering him from an Oklahoma team under investigation for possible recruiting violations to lead one of the most prestigious programs in the country.

Sampson broke the news to his Sooner team Tuesday. Indiana players were also informed, one of the Hoosier players' relatives told The Associated Press.

Details were being worked out Tuesday afternoon, and the deal was expected to be announced shortly, said a person close to the talks who requested anonymity because negotiations were ongoing. No news conference was scheduled.

"I was caught by surprise a little bit," said Taylor Griffin, a freshman forward for the Sooners. "He made the decision. I guess it's better for the program. I guess it's better for him."

The 50-year-old Sampson, AP's Coach of the Year in 1995, will replace Mike Davis, who announced last month he was resigning. Davis went 115-79 in six seasons as head coach, was the first Indiana coach to win 20 games in each of his first three seasons and led the Hoosiers to the national championship game in 2002, two seasons after Bob Knight was fired.

The Hoosiers were 19-12 this year and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they lost to Gonzaga.

Stephanie Gilbert, who help raised nephew A.J. Ratliff in Indianapolis, said the Hoosiers' sophomore guard called her Tuesday to discuss the change, first reported by ESPN. Gilbert also said it was likely Ratliff would stay at Indiana.

"He's looking forward to meeting him and getting to know him," Gilbert said. "He seems pretty happy."

Ratliff initially declined to comment, denying that a team meeting was held. Later, he appeared to confirm Sampson's hiring to television crews in Bloomington.

"He's shown that he's a good coach by what he's done at Oklahoma," Ratliff said. "You've got to give him a chance. He's shown that he can win at Oklahoma, so I think he can come here and do the same."

Two other key Indiana players had said after Davis resigned that they were apt to transfer: D.J. White, the 2005 Big Ten freshman of the year, and Robert Vaden.

Gilbert said Sampson's hiring could change their minds.

"Once they meet with him, they'll probably need to see," Gilbert said. "I think, from the looks of it, they have a pretty good coach on their hands."

Oklahoma officials declined to comment Tuesday. Telephone messages left for Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan and spokesman Pete Rhoda were not immediately returned.

Sampson leaves Oklahoma behind amid an investigation for possible recruiting violations. The NCAA is looking into more than 550 impermissible phone calls to recruits by Sampson and his assistant coaches, and Oklahoma officials are scheduled to appear before an NCAA panel in Utah on April 21.

As part of their self-imposed sanctions, the Sooners froze Sampson's salary for a two-year period beginning in 2005 and restricted him from receiving any postseason bonuses. His recruiting was also heavily curtailed.

NCAA spokesman Erik Christiansen said it's up to the committee on infractions to determine whether any penalties would follow Sampson to Indiana.

"It's all dependent on what the sanctions are, the severity of the bylaw violations and ultimately it's up to them," Christiansen said.

Such a thing has happened before: For instance, former Ohio State assistant Paul Biancardi was prohibited from recruiting until October 2007 at his new job as coach of Wright State University in Dayton over recruiting violations under former Buckeye head coach Jim O'Brien. The sanctions prompted Biancardi's resignation from Wright State two weeks ago.

When he resigned, Davis said he believed Indiana needed a former Hoosier to unify the pro-Knight and anti-Knight factions. But Greenspan turned down the opportunity to lure Iowa's Steve Alford, a former All-American who led the Hoosiers to the 1987 national title.

"Certainly there were those persons who wanted a coach to come from the 'IU family,' but I did not detect that being the majority of the people," said Ken Beckley, president of the Indiana Alumni Association president. "Most wanted us to get the best coach available that we could afford."

Sampson spent the last 12 seasons at Oklahoma, re-establishing the Sooners as a national contender. Oklahoma went 20-9 this year, and his name came up after the Sooners were upset in the first round of the NCAA tournament by Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Sampson gives the Hoosiers a widely respected coach and proven recruiter. He has been successful in both the Pac-10 and Big 12; he once served as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches; he has coached on five national teams; and boasts a career record of 455-257.

In 12 seasons with the Sooners, Sampson went 279-109 and made 12 straight postseason appearances, including the 2002 Final Four, Oklahoma's first trip to the semifinals in more than a decade.

The Sooners were upset in that game -- by Davis' Hoosiers, who went on to lose to Maryland in the final.

Sampson took his team back to the regional finals in 2003. In 2004-05, the Sooners shared the Big 12 title and were ranked among the top 10.

Sampson is one of six coaches with 20 or more wins each of the past nine seasons. The others are Arizona's Lute Olson (15), Kentucky's Tubby Smith (13), Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (10), Syracuse's Jim Boeheim (9) and Connecticut's Jim Calhoun (9).

Sampson got his first head coaching job at Montana Tech in 1981 after spending only one season as an assistant there. After back-to-back conference titles, he moved on to Washington State where he was an assistant for two years before taking over as head coach. He led the Cougars to the 1994 NCAA tournament in his final season before coming to Oklahoma.

Wow, that kinda sucks... I don't think the big bosses were happy with a first round knockout with that roster...

That was a good team, their was no reason why they should of lost in the first round, they have great guards in Everett and Neal and dominate big guys(who they rarely fed) in Gray and Bookout, that's one of those teams that has all the tools but lack of direction... I think its somewhat of a big loss but they'll recover...
