How about the Rangers retaining Mark Teixeira for another two years?
Teixeira is quickly emerging as a superstar in the league..one of the best and most complete players around.
It's big new for an organization that really is on the brink of being a very good team, especially with the acquisition of Kevin Millwood, to re-sign Teixeira.
Things seem like they will be very tight in the AL East with the Yanks, Sox, Jays and Orioles and in AL West with the A's, Angels, Rangers, and Mariners who have also made some moves this offseason.

I agree with you about the AL East, but the Orioles aren't gonna be a factor. They caught lightning in a bottle for half a year, but it's time for them to fall back to earth.
I think the biggest aquisition in that division was the Red Sox getting Beckett. He's so young and so dominant at times. His only problem is that he can't stay healthy (those blisters really screw him up).
The main concern for the Yankees is still their pitching. I'm just not sold on their starters. Mussina is on the decline, same with Johnson. Pavano isn't consistent enough to scare anyone. Chacon pitched well late last season when the Yanks got him from the Rockies, but how will he do for a full year? Wright is a mess. But you guys got Lee Mazzili now (in my eyes the best pitching coach in the bigs). He was able to make something of Wright in Atlanta, maybe he can do it again.
My Cardinals have had a rough offseason. They lost Sanders, Morris, Walker (although he didn't play much last year), Grudzielanek, and some key bullpen guys. They tried to sign A.J. Burnett and I think they tried to sign another big name starter but they couldn't. My main concern this offseason was the outfield and trying to find a #3 starter (to go behind Carpenter and Mulder).
So who did they get? Sidney Ponson. Wow, I feel a whole lot better now. I'm hoping against hope that he isn't a lot cause and that Dave Duncan (Cardinals pitching coach) can fix him somehow. Although I did like the signing of Encarnacion. His production should make it so we won't miss Reggie Sanders too much.
From now until spring training, my concerns are: (1) Rolen's health, (2) a #3 starter because I hate having either Marquis or Suppan in that spot, and (3) who will be the third outfielder with Edmonds and Encarnacion.
Damn, I love baseball.
I'm afraid the Jays are going to mop the floor with everyone this year. They have very solid pitching, and a cy young candidate in roy halladay I might add. They're bull pen is very good, they have gotten some big bats and they play good defence. The only team they have to fear is the yankees because they can never keep up with them, but I don't think that will be a problem this year.
GO JAYS!!!! :D

Go Rockies!!! We Rockies fans this year will get to enjoy the mercy season once again. Rather than suffer the 150+ games of misery and scorn, we will get to rejoice when our season opener is also our last meaningful game of the year :D

I'm not a Rockies fan, but let me tell you, they are definitely a team on the upswing. If they keep most of those youngsters and get even a little more pitching, they are going to be real good in a year or two. Hang in there!

I'm happy Mariano Rivera, Hideki Matsui, Cano, etc have decided not to play and rest themselves for the regular season, personally.

Sammy Sosa probably will retire after rejecting an offer from the Washington Nationals.
"It's more than likely we have seen him in a uniform for the last time," Sosa's agent, Adam Katz, said Wednesday.
The 37-year-old outfielder ranks fifth on the career home run list with 588 but batted .221 with 14 homers and 45 RBIs last year in his only season with the Baltimore Orioles.
Washington offered Sosa a non-guaranteed contract that would have included performance bonus opportunities.
"It wasn't about the money and it wasn't about No. 600," Katz said. "It was a function of Sammy's expectation of his own performance. He didn't want to go out there and underperform like he did last year because it was just too painful for him, and it's just something he doesn't want to go through again."
Sosa became a free agent after last season and will not go on a formal retirement list.
After beginning his major league career with the Texas Rangers in 1989, Sosa was traded to the Chicago White Sox. He was dealt to the Chicago Cubs in 1992 and became a star and fan favorite, captivating the county in 1998 when he and Mark McGwire dueled to break Roger Maris' season homer mark of 61. McGwire hit 70 that year, and Sosa finished with 66. Barry Bonds became the record-holder when he hit 73 in 2001.
Sosa wore out his welcome in Chicago in 2004 and was dealt to Baltimore after the season.
With baseball mired in accusations that star players used steroids, Sosa was among the players called to testify before a congressional committee last March. McGwire refused to answer questions about past steroid use. Sosa said he never used illegal steroids.
"I'm sure something will work out for him," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said earlier Wednesday. "I certainly don't think he's through. Injuries have hurt him the last couple of years. I'm hoping he gets a job."
Baker said the chase for 600 could motivate Sosa to play.
"That's definitely something you got to consider," he said. "That's mighty close to a major milestone."

I don't think sosa would get 600 anyway, he was just terrible last year, for sosa's standards.

Another Barrier Broken: Woman to Go Into Hall
By Tim Brown, Times Staff Writer
February 28 2006
Effa Manley, co-owner of the Negro League Newark Eagles, on Monday became the first woman elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Manley and 16 others from the Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues were selected by a 12-person panel and will be inducted July 30 with Bruce Sutter, the only player elected this year by the Baseball Writers Assn. of America.
The class, composed of 12 players and five executives, was narrowed after a five-year study funded by Major League Baseball produced a database of more than 3,000 players and contributors.
From a preliminary list of 39, the special committee selected Negro League players Ray Brown, Willard Brown, Andy Cooper, Biz Mackey, Mule Suttles, Cristobal Torriente and Jud Wilson, pre-Negro League players Frank Grant, Pete Hill, Jose Mendez, Louis Santop and Ben Taylor, and executives Alex Pompez, *** Posey, J.L. Wilkinson, Sol White and Manley.
Outfielder Monte Irvin played 10 seasons for the Newark Eagles when they were owned by Manley and with or against several of the players elected. Don Newcombe and Larry Doby also played for the Eagles.
"I only wish Jackie Robinson were alive to see the fruits of his wonderful pioneering," said Irvin, who played eight seasons with the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1973.
Irvin, who turned 87 Saturday, said of Manley: "She was strong, handsome, intelligent. She knew a lot about baseball and tried to improve the lot of Negro Leaguers."
He recalled Manley's inviting the likes of Joe Louis, Ella Fitzgerald and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson to throw out ceremonial first pitches in Newark. Manley, who was white, owned the team with her husband, Abe. She died in 1981.
"She was civic-minded," Irvin said. "She was quite beloved in Newark for years."
Irvin reached the major leagues in 1949, two years after Robinson broke the color barrier with the Dodgers.
"I wish people could have seen Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Buck Leonard play," Irvin said of his fellow Hall of Famers. "The players of today are good, but I wish they could have seen these guys. They were marvelous players."
Noting the dearth of information regarding players from the Negro and pre-Negro leagues, the baseball Hall of Fame, with the help of a $250,000 grant from Major League Baseball, began gathering information and statistics in 2000. Former baseball commissioner Fay Vincent served as nonvoting chairman of the committee that selected the 17 players and contributors, pared from the 39 chosen at a November meeting in Vero Beach, Fla. Buck O'Neil and Minnie Minoso were the only living nominees.
"I'm delighted," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "It's long overdue. It's something that should have been done decades ago. It's the fair and right thing to do. We've taken the first giant step."

Yankees have no pitching.
Well, I disagree.
Mike Mussina is still a very very effective pitcher.
Randy Johnson, I'll think he'll bounce back a la A-Rod.
Shawn Chacon pitched as well as anyone in the majors pretty much last year down the stretch.
Chien Ming Wang was also clutch, and there's no reason to believe he can't continue that sort of play.
Then you talk about Carl Pavano or Jaret Wright as the 5th starter? Sounds good to me when you couple it with what might be the most potent offense we'll see in our lifetimes.

So the yanks had some problems in their opening series..not to worry though!
The offense looks great, and the starting pitching does as well.
Biggest problems seem to be defense, and then like every other team, depth in the bullpen.

Yea, judging the first few series in baseball is like judging teams the first week in the NFL, it's just stupid. The Jays will finish up their opening series tonight, they were up 4-0 last night but gave it up in the fourth. It's gonna be a dog fight in the AL East this year...

How 'bout them Yankees?
This is going to be an interesting season---If their offense plays consistantly, like it did today, and in the opener....no other team has ANY shot at the title.
If it plays like it had the games in between EVERY other team has a shot at the title.
If they play in between, they should still be the favorites, as long as their pitching stays healthy.
The last time they started 1-4 (and they're 2-4 after today,) was in 1998, when they went 114-48, and won the World Series.
Go Yankees...and also, just because I told everyone so about Sizemore, and Hafner, GO INDIANS!

We're doing better than anyone expected us to out of the gate. Looks like the new owners are already doing a great job!
Hey, anyone think we could get another starting pitcher for Freel and/or LaRue?
Meh, it's such an early season, remember the Orioles last season? They exploded out of the gate and led the AL East for most of the first half, in the second half they fell apart and fell behind the yankees, sox, and jays, it's way too early to judge my friend. Like judging the first week of the NFL season, and we all know how that works out! ;)

The yankees are starting to get into form! Randy Johnson looks like the pitcher the yankees signed 2 years ago!
Blue Jays gotta smarten up!
Josh Towers is pitching like a fool and AJ and Halladay got injured the first week!
Luckily we're healthy now and we have the best team batting average in all of the majors, Vernon Wells is on a 12 game hit streak, 13 if you count last year, the Jays should be heating up soon!

All I have to say is...thank god for Drew and Mueller. I can't imagine what they'd look like without them.
I guess 7-8 isn't that bad. I'm just afraid of that turning into 20-30 around Memorial day. If/when Furcal and Kent (who can't catch a break) start hitting like they can, we'll be fine.

It would be nice if Nomar actually came back for LA. Also Brazoban getting Tommy John is not a good thing for an alreadly thin bullpen. I do not want to see anymore Lance Carter as he sucks.
Hopefully they can win 85 games as last year that was enough in the NL West.

Your Jays' lineup is stacked. Vernon Wells is a beast and Rios is really turning on the ball.

Vernon Wells usually starts off slow but he's been great so far, Rios has really improved from last year, he changed his stance and now he can really drive the ball deep, hence his 5 HRs thus far. Overbay has been OK, Troy Glaus has been very good, and the rest of the starters are hitting consistently, it looks like it's gonna be a good year!

I don't know - I have a feeling Cody Ross was just another Tuffy Rhodes (remember him?) Baseball is such a long season and one game, or even a 7-for-14 start, doesn't amount to that much in the long run. Of course if they win the division by one game then we'll look back fondly at his contribution that day in Pittsburgh :D
By the way Med and In-Com, how about that win tonight? No-hit for almost 7 innings and still managed to come back against one of the top closers out there. Not bad!

I'm hoping that was more than just a "W". Mounting that comeback against the games top closer (outside of Gagne of course). And to finally field the lineup they/we were hoping for on opening day is huge. Nomar being the key. And once Furcal and Kent start hitting....
That triple by Lofton set everything up. Like last week when he was down 0-2 with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. He drew that walk, stole second, and the next pitch Drew drove him in for the winning run.

Carson is currently walking around fine, but he hasn't forced himself to run. He can throw, and according to his receivers, it's same old Carson, but he isn't dropping back or moving around as though he were in the pocket before throwing. He's still a little heavy on his feet, from what I hear. He should be ready by the end of camp, but the conventional wisdom is to think that he won't start until the 3rd game of the year against the Steelers.
From what he's said, though, all indications are that he's still quite a bit ahead of schedule and should be right back to form. He's working his butt off making sure he'll be ready.
Thanks to USC for producing such a great QB!

BTW, I couldn't believe my Red Sox traded Bronson Arroyo to your Reds for Willie Mo Pena. So far, Willie Mo has been worse than advertised. He's been dreadful in right field and strikes out on a regular basis.

Still, it's definitely a step in the right direction. We've had the benefit of a few easy series lately (I don't think anyone expects anything out of the Nationals this year, after all), but at the same time, we've had good series against the Cubs and Cardinals, and that's pre-Derek Lee injury. I think that's something that everyone here can point to as an indication that everything Krivsky's done has been solidly positive. Also, we took 3 of 4 from a Brew Crew that came out of the gate fast in its own right, and we were the team to walk away with the momentum. We've got a big series at home this weekend against the Astros, and I think this will be a good litmus test of how far the Reds have really come. If we win this series, I think it's safe to start thinking about the Reds as a serious contender for a playoff spot this year.

Hes pitching in the national league for god sakes. Of course his numbers are going to be better. How often can you get a 24 year old kid who has un real power(just has to harness it). I STILL like the move for two reasons. 1. Manny and ortiz should be able to help this kid quite a bit and pena has a lot of potential. 2. Well, rather, the bats are starting to wake up...
The pitching staff has been one of the tops in the Al so far, which is bad news for everyone else when you look at the lineup they have.

Dang, no NL West fans here. I just wanted to give a shout out and say, GO ROCKIES! 7th best team in the Major Leauges!
I don't know if there's any Padre or Diamondback or Giant fans on the board, but Medford Bronco, Calif. Bronco, and I are Dodger fans. There's a couple others but I can't remember who they are right now.
Anyways, if our bullpen didn't suck so bad we'd be about a game behind the Rockies. :ugh:

Man, if you blinked, you missed a Yankee run going across the plate! Yikes!
It still doesn't concern me as much as the NL does, though. Cincinnati took two of three from the Astros, and they head into a little two game affair with the Cards to determine the leader in the central. Overall, it was a great weekend, we just couldn't get enough offense on Sunday - the Reds won't lose very often when the other team's only put three up this year.

But can he field? I know you can't base much one only one game, but I was driving home from Vegas a few weeks ago and my girlfriend was asleep so I put the XM radio on the Reds-Cubs game (God I love XM!!!) and the guy missed practically everything hit his way (that was the game they had like 5 errors in the first three innings or something.)
Sidenote: My best friend is a huge Reds fan and I called him and left this message: "No wonder you guys are always in last place - you've got Juan Encarnacion playing third base?" :duh: Of course I knew it wasn't Juan, but that was the first time I had ever really heard of Edwin Encarnacion. :D

Edwin's starting his first full season this year. I remember the game that you're talking about , and he hasn't had another game like that since it happened. He actually was brought up because of his fielding ability, and I don't think you'll see very many games like that out of him again. I'd chalk that up to butterflies. :)

Mario Soto, Tom Browning, Chris Sabo, Rob Dibble, Randy Myers, Norm Charlton
Kal Daniels (just kidding he was earlier) Paul O'Neil

No just kidding on that. Their pitching is mediocre and they have a ton of injuries in the bullpen. No Eric Gagne has cost them at least 3 games so far this year.
They are 12-14 and being in a horrific division they still have a chance
Their starting pitching is so-so at best with Lowe, Penny, O Perez and Tomko
bullpen loss of Brazoben (spelling) as a set up man is not good either.

I agree - that game they blew on Sunday is really hurting them. I mean if they win that game and get the sweep then lose last night it's not as bad. I think we're getting about what we expected, aren't we? They do OK against lousy teams in their division (took 2 of 3 against Ariz. and SD, lost 2 of 3 to the Evil Giants) and struggle better teams outside their division (Houston, Atlanta, etc.)
It's actually going to be interesting to see how long Colletti lets this team go. I mean part of me says they're in such a lousy division that they should actually contend all year long if they hang around .500. Another part of me though says it may be time to bring up a few of these kids sooner rather than later. I predict he'll do something in between - namely bring up the kids to fill needs (like bringing Either up tonight cuz Ledee is hurt, Broxton to replace that piece of junk Carter, Loney for Nomar when he was hurt, etc.) but keep the rest of them down in Vegas for most of the season.
[I]Side note: hey there - as I'm typing this they just scored two in the first inning. Alas, though, Perez is on the mound so it probably won't last [I] :ugh:

You are right as they blew another 5-0 game. This is the Dodgers right
Didn't they have pitching at one time in their history.
They look like a bad American League team (the Rangers) with no bullpen and mediorce starting pitching.
For surprises how about the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers. It feels like Kirk Gibson, Jack Morris and Darrel Evans are back for Det and for the Red is Johnny Bench playing with Mario Soto, Tom Browning, Rob Dibble, Eric Davis and Billy Hatcher. LOL This is great for Baseball to see small market teams thrive :D

Before the season began, Bob Castellini (the new owner) arranged for all the great living Reds he could find to go down to Florida and help out during spring training. I am also glad we got rid of Jeff Weaver, he has been a stiff as well for the Angels with his 6.99 ERA. When will these guys realize it is much easier to pitch in the NL over the AL, just ask Randy Johnson :coffee:
I don't know if easier to pitch in the NL. You'd think it would, but some people pitch better in the AL. Curt Schilling seems to do better over there. I think his best years might have been in AZ, but he seems to do great with the Sox. And look at Pettite. He doesn't seem to be the dominant pitcher anymore.
I did like Weaver while he was in LA. His only problem was mental. If he gets touched up for a couple hits he seems to lose it. Even if he there was an error he'd seem to lose focus. If someone made an E, he was going to give up a dong shortly after.

It's definitely easier to pitch in the NL in my opinion.
Take a look at team batting averages...AL teams consistently make up the majority of the top ten as far as average is concerned.
As for specific examples, Pettitte has struggled a little bit, but that's due to injury. In his one full year in the NL, his era was the lowest he's had in his career by almost a full half-run.
He gave up fewer hits in that year than he ever had in the AL (188 vs. 216 in the AL) (while maintaining at least 200 innings pitched)
As far as win totals are concerned, you have to factor in the horrible run support he receives with the astros as compared to the run support he received from the team of the 90's.
Randy might be another good example, but it's hard to say..maybe he's just getting old.
Bronson Arroyo seems to be another one.
Schilling's best years were definitely in the NL, but then again, he too is getting older.
When it comes down to it, you have 8 batters in an NL lineup, 9 in an AL one, and that makes all the difference.

And the one thing people always forget is that you can pitch around the #8 hitter if you're in a jam in the NL so in those cases it's like having 7 1/2 batters. :coffee:
