Okay, rather than step on the toes of the NASCAR fans, thought I'd start my own thread.

Who here watches bull riding, like PBR (Professional Bull Riders) on OLN? I rarely get to watch because I don't get OLN, but I do watch when I can at my parents and have been keeping track of "Beyond the Bull", which is on Thursday nights on TLC 10/9c. I read an article the other day that said it is now the fastest growing sport in the U.S. due to the fact that not only are fans getting into the bull riders as celebrities...the bulls are becoming celebrities themselves. Justin McBride, the 2005 PBR Champion was born and raised in Mullen, Nebraska...so I pretty much always pull for him being a Nebraska guy.

For those of you that do watch, who's your favorite rider and bull, past or present.

For me..

Rider: Justin McBride
Bull: Tie between Bodacious and Little Yellow Jacket

I never got the chance to see it (since I wasn't but like two years old), but I sure would have liked to seen Lane Frost ride Red Rock. That would have been something to see.

LMAO - I stand corrected Big Buck - this thread has been up for only 2 hours and you already have a bunch of responses! I honestly never knew bull riding had such a following!

Sure enough, check these stats out...

In 1998, televised PBR events had 33,912,988 views, in 2004, that number ballooned to 104,277,264 (a 307% increase). From 2002 to 2004, it's growth was 51.93%, qualifying it as the fastest growing sport in America.

From 2004 to 2005, the PBR saw an increase of over 2,000,000 fans attending events, jumping from about 16.3 million to 18.5 million.

In ten years, the PBR sponsorship dollars rose from $360,000 to $22 million.

It's also drawing in a LOT of fans and riders from foreign countries. Three Brazilian brothers, Adriano, Andre, and Allen Moraes all ride bulls in the PBR. The oldes, Adriano, is a PBR Champion.

If you're interested in learning more about the PBR, check this (http://www.pbrnow.com/) website out.

That's awesome - I see where most of their games (matches? events? what do you call them anyway?) are on OLN and TLC. I just may have to check them out.

I was also interested to see that NBC is also mentioned as a carrier but didn't see them on the current television listings. Do they only carry the biggest match or something? Is there a SuperBowl or Daytona 500 or some other one that is more presitgious than the rest?

You can call them events or rodeos, though technically, they're not really rodeos because bull riding is the only event featured. They are pretty much only aired on OLN, but every once in a while, especially in the case of major events, they will put them on network TV. The PBR is working now to bring more events to network TV, probably to NBC since that's the only channel involved in airing them.

The main event of the year for PBR is the PBR Finals, held every October in Las Vegas. Much like NASCAR, there is a year long points race, and the PBR Finals are kind of like NASCAR's championship shoot-out. Most, but not all, bull riding events involve a rider riding a maximum of 3 bulls in 3 "go-rounds". The first two go-rounds are qualifying rounds, and the third is called the "short-go" where the qualifying riders (often the top 10-15) ride to win the event. The PBR Finals features 8 go-rounds.

There are also multiple tours that the PBR features, the major league tour being the "Built Ford Tough Series"...which is a 30-city series. At the end of the series-year, the top 45 bull riders are eligible for the PBR Championship.

Things can get a little confusing...the rider who finishes the season and the finals with the most points is crowned PBR Champion, however, the PBR Champion need not win the PBR Finals to be crowned champion...it's more or less an opportunity for riders who a close to gain ground, or over-take the points leader, so it behooves the points leader to do well to maintain their lead for the championship.

I hope that explains it...much like NASCAR, there are several quirks, but once you start getting into it, it really is a fun sport to watch. Plus it spans that hellish period of time known as the NFL off-season when high contact sports are few and far between.

Nice sig (top one) who made it for ya?

Thanks! I made all of the sigs myself, which is pretty amazing for the simple fact that I don't have Photoshop or anything like that. I just used the Paint program that comes on just about every computer and a cheap picture editing software I got with an order of photos from Wal-Mart. It's not near as nice as some of the sigs people like Snk16 makes, but I think its pretty good. And thank you again for saying its nice, I always like getting compliments for my work. :D

Speaking of ranching.....

A West Texas cowboy was herding his herd in a remote pasture when suddenly
a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a
young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie,
leans out the window and asks the cowboy,

"If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will
you give me a calf?"

The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his
peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it
to his AT&T cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he
calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his
location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area
in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports
it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he
receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and
the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC
connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his
Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech,
miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says,
"You have exactly 1586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the
cowboy. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on
amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then the cowboy says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what
your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?"

"You're a consultant for the National Democratic Party." says the cowboy.

"Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even
though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already
knew, to a question I never asked; and you don't know anything about my
business........ Now give me back my dog."

Love watching any of the rodeo stuff you get on ESPN. So much fun.

I always love watching the Outdoor Games too!
