I was thinking of this when I had to listen to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver in the World Series last year. They are horrendous.
My worst in all sports are
Rick Generet of the Buffalo Sabres. He screams on any play that Buffalo has a chance to score, even if the game is 6-0 either way.
The aforementioned Tim McCarver. He is so Pro Yankee it makes me sick.
Dale Arnold of the Boston Bruins. He just is horrendous.
**** Vitale in college basketball. I know he is knowlegable but his act is old.
and finally Gil Santos and Gino Capeletti of the New England Patriots. They are the worst homers out there.
Yes I do have too much time on my hands. :jawdrop:

I can't forget Gary Thorne formerly of ESPN for hockey. He was a joke as well. :coffee:

Steve Stewart of the Cincinnati Reds radio broadcast team makes you yearn for the days when the only way to keep track of the game was to actually be there.
I agree with Tim McCarver.
Vitale... *sigh* Vitale is annoying to a lot of people, but no one makes a game feel big better than ****ie V.
Pat Summeral was terrible in his last few years. He slaughtered so many names it was like listening to nails on a chalkboard.
The biggest joke these days is Berman. I can't stand it when he says "daylight come and you gotta Delhomme." I have actually muted my TV during fastest 3 minutes just so I can get through the Panthers highlights without wanting to scream.

I always thought that one was kinda clever...
Well... the first few times.... :heh:

Good one WhoDey, Berman's act is getting old. He is horrific on baseball on those late Wednesday Night backup games.
Another horrific one is the radio hockey announcer for the Tampa Bay Lightning. I don't know his name but when they won the cup in 04, ESPN played some clips and this guy's voice shrieked so much like an earthquake was happening.
It was painful.

INteresting threads, these always are.
I always ask....ok, who do you think will do it better?
In my mind, there's Al Michaels. The best in the biz
And everyone else is fairly interchangeable. No one really distinctive, except Madden. But he is passe, and has been for 15 years.
Even the worst guy is better than you or me. And I tried it full time out of college. It is VERY hard to do.

I have have always liked **** Enberg in football. It seemed as Denver was in a lot of big game when he was the lead announcer for NBC and he is a classy individual IMHO.
In baseball I always though Vin Scully was one of the best as well IMHO.

No one is more annoying than the Colts radio announcers. I forgot his name. But he always goes,''TOUCHDOWN-TOUCHDOWN.'' You get it.

I think the worst of all is Bill Walton. That man is an idiot!!!!
I also hate the "touch-down kan-sas cityyyyyy" guy whoever he is.
I agree with Medford on the Buffalo Sabers guy, he is extremely annoying. :duh: '
I like Chris Berman, he's funny and he knows the game well, he just tries to make the highlights more interesting and funny!
Anyone who's seen the raptors announcers will know what I'm talking about, a guy named Chuck Swirsky is the play-by-play guy and although he has a good speaking voice he gets excited over the smallest plays(a three pointer in the first quarter). :coffee:
My favorite is Al Michaels though, he's not opinionated and he knows sports

But that's not necessarily the point Jared. I mean you could say that about almost any profession and certainly about any entertainer, couldn't you? The worst actor for example still knows more about acting than you or I, right? And yet I can still tell you that Morgan Freeman is better than Keanu Reeves.
As for the worst announcers though, I do have a hard time picking one because most of them are, as you say, interchangeable. Two alltime ones that stand out as particularly bad, however, were Todd Christiansen (sp.) and Harry Carey (I just never liked the blatant homerism and obvious unpreparedness- sorry Cubs fans.)
As for the best, in my admittedly biased mind it begins and ends with Vin Scully. I heard him on his first spring broadcast last Sunday and he was already in midseason form.

.
In my mind, it is the point.
Saying what you don't like about a certain person's announciing style is fine, that's preference.
Saying that they suck, is a qualitative statement that implies that any of us have any credentials to give such grades.
Also, it's not a very descriptive statement.
I dislike Madden because I don't like his style or all that telestrater jazz.
I don't dislike anyone else. Although, Summerall was clearly and sadly making too many obvious mistakes in the end. But he's a good guy with a great voice.
And I know for a fact that pet rocks show more range as an actor than Keanau Reeves. At least mine does.

So can we say that Keanu sucks?????
Actually I see your point now and agree with it. I work all day with kids who just say something "sucks" or is "boring" and I am constantly telling them they are entitled to that opinion as long as they back it up with reasons. That's what I attempted to do with my criticism of Carey, for example (and what I didn't do with the criticism of Christianson) - Good Lord, how do you spell that guy's name anyway? :heh:

In Denver...
Broncos - Dave Logan is getting boring... "And that is a Denver Touchdown." Duh, it was a Bronco player who just scored, so it's obviously a "Denver" touchdown.
He also seems to be watching a different game sometimes. I listen to KOA when I'm at the games, and he CONSTANTLY calls the wrong player number, or misses the refs indication about a penalty. He's just getting boring.
Rockies - George Frazier is an absolute idiot. Spends his time trying to sound "insightful" about a pitcher throwing a strike, and attempts lame humor.
On the national level for NFL football, Dan Dierdorf and Randy Cross.

1)i've never really been fond of any of the sunday night football crew (paul mcguire, joe theissman, some other guy) they ALWAYS say the dumbest things like when there is an obvious pass interpherence and Theismann says "i think there was a holding on that play Paul"??? ***!!!!!!!! and there was a time when a kicker kicked right through the uprights and one of them said "oh no, he missed another one"??? ***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2)I know that Sean Salisbury isn't a commentator but come on...i dont think an individual can get any dumber than this @ssclown!!!!!

I also forgot to add Ken Harrelson of the White Sox. Anytime a player from Chic hit s homer he says "You can put it on the board Yesssssssssssssssss"
In the 70s he was with the Red Sox and was pretty good but now he is a blantant disgusting homer.
John Sterling of the Yankees is bad as well saying "Thhhhhhheeee Yankeees Win, Thhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yankees win." I want to puke when hearing him.
Some of the best are: Mike Emrick of NBC and the NJ Devils is excellent.
Fred Cuicick who did the Boston Bruins for 50 years was excellent and
Curt Gowdy the class act he was was great as well.

Rich Gannon. He helped broadcast the Broncos/Raiders game last season in Oakland. Massive homer there! Saying things like "We should have done better on that play..."
I do like Keith Jackson.

I say John Madden, overplayed and horrible.
He is such a homer for certain players.....that and he's a former Raider.

:ugh: I remember that game...
Gannon was not only a Raider, but also a former Chief.
Subjective opinions? I doubt it. We won, if I remember correctly.

Whoever the guy was that The Colorado Avalanche started the year with on Altitude was attrocious. He lasted all of a couple weeks before they canned him and hired Mike Haynes, the former radio play by play guy. I remember he was referring to the Avs as "Us" and Peter McNabb had to correct him and say "Well fortunately, it's not 'Us', it's the Avalanche." So that guy can pack it up and head back to Phoenix where he came from...
--Bill Maas of Fox was probably the most painful guy to listen to this year.
--The old ESPN Sunday night crew was terrible, namely Paul McGwire who was a former kicker and apparently that made him qualified to belittle everyone else's play week after week.
--It doesn't really count because they aren't "announcers", but Shannon Sharpe, Michael Irvin and Terry Bradshaw single handedly make it impossible for me to watch any pregame shows because they are so incredibly idiotic and annoying with their comments. They offer no insight, stumble over basic sentences and annoy everyone else on the set.
Personally, I like McCarver, Berman and to a lesser extent Vitale. Also, a guy who catches alot of flack on these boards is Phil Simms, who I regard as probably the best color analyst in Pro Football today, along with Troy Aikman.

My thread has been resurrected in the new forum. LOL
On ESPNews I heard the Tampa Bay Lightning Radio announcers call of the Stanley Cup win in 2004 and I needed to turn the volume down it was awful.
Another pretty horrid one is John Sterling of the NY Yankees. He does the Yankees win, TTTTTHHHHHHEEEEE YANKEES Win he does suck.
Lastly we can't forget Gerry Glanville who used to coach the Falcons and Oilers, he is pretty bad as well.

Beasely Reece is tough to take as an NFL announcer.
One of my favorite analysts is Dan Fouts. He's very perceptive and is never overly dramatic.

John Madden...he just annoys the heck out of me.
The whole old Sunday Night football crew(theisman, mcquire, and whatever the other guys name was)...Theisman only talks about his playing days. McQuire was just and idiot (I do get a kick out of Bill Simmons when he makes fun of him in his columns  ) and the other guy didnt know anything at all.
I enjoy Al Micheals and Phil Simms.
how do you people think Tony Corheiser will do (one of the hosts of PTI)? He's part of the new MNF crew on ESPN.

I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this... But after watching today's NFL live draft special, I am wondering Hodge got a job at ESPN. He's overbearing, always talks for longer than he should and pretty much makes himself look worse everytime he opens his mouth.
I finally had to just turn it to the NFL network and watch footage of the combine for the 100th time. This guy definitely sets the bar for bad analysts on ESPN-- You know he's bad when he makes Salsbury look like a genius.

pat summeral for sure sucked, he kept saying pluu-mer
there was an avs guy i didnt like, he was the thank you thank you thank you guy when we scored, that got old as well.
the new avs guy says teams are now at even strenth, instead of strength, for some reason that always gets on my nerves

I believe you're talking about Mike Haynes, the former Avs radio guy who is now the Altitude play by play man-- He's one of my favorite announcers because of his hometown enthusiasm, and he beats the heck of the alternative, some guy from Phoenix who started the year, which I talked about earlier in this thread... He got fired I believe and replaced by Haynes.

if you watch the game and are local, shut off the sound and put on the radio or internet. We always did this to shut off the announcer in the Red Sox vs Yankees ALCS in 2004. Tim McCarver made me  Joe Buck although is good for football, sucks at baseball.
BTW the worst I have ever heard is the Buffalo Sabres play by play of Rick Jeneret.
When they score, he sounds like he is going to have a coronary.
I also think Dale Arnold of the Boston Bruins is pathetic as well :coffee:

You mentioned Fred Cusick earlier and I agree he was fantastic. He's one of my favorite announcers of all time.
