View Full Version : Can the Reds keep this up?

The Reds currently hold the best record in baseball and a two game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals for the top of the NL Central. Most recent accomplishments include taking 2 of 3 from the Houston Astros (including their first win ever against Roy Oswalt) and a two game series sweep of the Cards at Great American Ballpark (their last 2 game sweep of the Cardinals came all the way back in '92!).
Are the Reds for real? What do you think?

I can't remember where I heard it (I think it was Mike & Mike this morning) but that exact same question was asked somewhere recently. Their 4.5 team ERA was quickly brought up with someone saying that not many great teams have that high of an ERA. But you have to consider where they play and the amount of runs they get themselves. Which is tops in the NL I believe.
I think they can. Especially if Jr comes back strong. But they could easily be last years Nationals.

Offensively they can, But I am still not sold on their starting pitching besides Arroyo. A lot of people are pitching way over their heads right now (Harang comes to mind) For your sake Whodey, I hope it continues and they repeat 1990.
MY Dodgers suck as usual. They are playing like a poor AL team with no pitching ala Texas

Strangely enough, the offense was the problem last night. Claussen gave us a quality start, and the relievers didn't let the Rocks get on the board again. A good pitcher's duel all night.
Hopefully that gets turned around tonight... I think there's a fatigue factor starting to set in. Hopefully I'm wrong.
I think that they will be contenders for more than half of the year, but if they don't improve their pitching, they cannot make it into the playoffs, because they are in the hardest division in the NL.
It is so early to tell right now, but the Reds are definatly on fire, but I doubt they can hold off the Cardinals for the division title. With Albert Pujols hitting the ball every which way, it's gonna be tough for the Reds to compete with their supperior pitching and hitting, but perhaps they can get a wildcard spot. Good luck to the Reds though, what a start!!!!

I think this thread's only purpose is to convince WhoDey that he's not the only one who thinks the Reds are actually going to remain a good team

The Reds have won their last 8 games. 7 of those wins came on a 9 game road stretch where they played the Cubs, Astros, and Cards. The Reds now have the best record against teams in their own division, and control 1st place in the NL Central.
Booya.
By the way, didn't I see the Yankees give up 7 runs to the Sox last night?

Watch it, Medford....... Scott Erickson could turn out to be as good as Darrell May was for the Yankees last year!! On second thought, he already has :ugh: .
WhoDey, I'll be pulling for ex-Yankee prospect Claussen and ex red sox pitcher Arroyo. The Reds have a good team this year. :salute:

KB The Reds are a good team and it would be good to see them go to the playoffs this year.
I was just razzing TB, I was dumbfounded last night when I saw him in the game. He is the ultimate retread.
your comeback is at least he does not suck like Rudy Seanez of the Sox. or Odalis Perez of My Dodgers and they are geting grossly overpaid for very little value in return. :coffee:

Erickson's minimum salary is his only plus. He's toast. Yankee fans deserve some razzing for the fact that he is still on the team  ..... hopefully, he's gone Sunday when Chacon returns.

I see the threadjacking has spilled over from ABF into yet another one of my threads - Since when did I make an AL East thread?
KB - Of all of the pitchers in our starting rotation, the one I'm wishing goes the way of the Royals is Brandon Claussen. The guy is completely unreliable. When he's on, he's good... but you don't know which Claussen you're going to get from inning to inning. He'll have a terrible first two innings, a perfect third, and then he'll walk 3 guys in a row in the 4th. The sooner the trade deadline gets here, the better - we'll go for another starter, in all likelihood.
I've got my fingers crossed, hoping and praying we can work out a deal that gets Jason LaRue and Adam Dunn off our team and Dontrell Willis on it.

The Reds are still in good position at 38-33 to make a run at a wild card. As long as Bronson Arroyo (9-3 2.47 ERA) keeps this up, he should start the all-star game. Nice trade Red Sox :duh: (dummies NEVER TRADE GOOD PITCHING)
Well Whodey, heres hoping he wins Cy young and the Reds get a WC spot.

We're still awful, though. If we get to the playoffs, we'll get slaughtered by whoever we play in the first round. I wil be SHOCKED if the Reds get there this year. They certainly don't deserve to, after the way they've played the last 3 weeks. It's almost as if they had already given it up and packed it in.
Grrr. Stinkin' Reds. :fight:
