In reporting on Willie Mays' 75th birthday I heard several commentators refer to him as "the greatest living baseball player." So it got me thinking and I have compiled a list of "the greatest living athletes" in each sport. Please give opinions and inputs:

Baseball: Willie Mays
Football: John Elway (OK, I'm biased I admit)
Basketball: Michael Jordan
Hockey: Wayne Gretzsky
Auto Racing: Richard Petty
Tennis: Billie Jean King
Golf: Arnold Palmer

Looks like you have a good list right there. I'm sure their may be some that have other opinions, but I wouldn't go against the group you have there.
If any arguments........it will probably be in football.

Motor racing is a tough one. There are so many living legends. And in my opinion it has to go to Michael Schumacher. He's been through 4 generations of F1 cars, 7 times world champion in what is considered the pinacle of motor racing, in which he now I believe holds every record that matters.

I might have to agree about Jerry Rice aswell.

i love Elway but hard to argue against Jerry Rice

it would be to hard to make a list to many greats just to have 1.

I would vote for Bobby Orr as my hockey player, but that's only because I dislike gretzky!

I have to agree with Y2 that Michael Schumacher is probably the greatest living race car driver and that Jerry Rice is probably the greatest living football player.

Aside from Willie Mays, I'd probably put Stan Musial and Ernie Banks right behind him.
