Why did we trade Wily Mo? We could've had him pitch the 9th instead of Garbage Ball Gagne.

Or maybe the French Flop is a better nickname?

I think Bailey the Best nicknamed him Eric "Going, Going, Gone" Gagne. My brother liked that one the best.

Maybe we should start a poll of various nicknames for that bum and decide on the official nickname for this board.

Anybody else have some nicknames to add here that we could eventually put on a poll?

Yea Gagne is really pissing Boston fans off.
IF you guys miss the playoffs by 1 game everyone will blame it on Gagne

Oh ok I understand! The Yanks aren't good enough to go out and win the division themselves, so they need guys on the Red Sox to mess it up for them! It all makes sense now! :D

Yeah. After only being good enough to win the division 9 straight seasons (let's face it, even the Royals or Pirates could do that), we can only win if boston messes up. ;)

EDIT AGAIN: The Yanks lost in extra innings last night so our MN is now 33 and the division lead is back to 5.

Great job by Wake last night as he gets his MLB tying 15th win this season.

Wake is now 19-2 lifetime against Tampa and 9-0 at the Trop.

Wake has not allowed a run in 15 consecutive innings. He has also blanked Tampa Bay 19 innings in a row.

Wake now has a decision in all of his 25 starts, the first to reach that number since Jack McDowell had a decision in his first 27 starts in 1993. It's also Boston's longest streak of decisions by a pitcher since since Danny MacFayden opened the 1929 season with 26 in a row.

The shutout was Boston's 11th of the season which leads the majors and indicates the Red Sox have the best pitching staff in the league!

Rockon Red Sox!

I'd also like to thank the Yankees for releasing Mike Myers a few weeks ago. He was back to his old self again.

Julian Taveras: 6 SOLID innings. Only 1 ER

Manny Delcarmen, Eric Gagne, Jon Papelbon: 3 innings of scoreless relief. Paps struck out the side in the 9th.

Yea we have 3 more so we will finish the season 2 behind Boston since they have such an easy schedule and will go undefeated the rest of the way except when they play us. :salute:

That means we finish the season without losing another game.

Pardon me for thinking otherwise, but.... :P

Anyone see Daniel Cabrera pull a Joba Chamberlain last night? I'm getting very pissed at these hot-headed flame throwers deliberately throwing at the heads of Red Sox players. This is ridiculous!

I hope MLB sends a message and suspends Cabrera for at least one start.

In other news, let's hope Clemen's continues to heal and have his next start at Fenway.

Something tells me it won't be his last start at Fenway ever again. I have a feeling we'll be seeing him in October. :salute:

Keep crying, but I bet you shed no tears when Yankees 1B Andy Phillips suffered a broken wrist after being hit by a pitch. Being within a foot of being HBP is worse than a season-ending injury.

I can't disagree more. Chamberlain and Cabrera were going after HEADS! They could kill someone or finish off their careers in one single pitch.

See Zimmer and Tony C.

Comparing Joba to Zimmer's situation? No. Zimmer was hit. Joba gets disciplined despite not receiving a warning in the game (explain that one, please) and you still gripe about him? Joba's pitches were nowhere near hitting anyone. Joba wasn't trying to kill anyone.

I knew you'd take that stance. A real injury is nothing, but get within a foot of my guy and...... whatever.

Were Cabrera's pitches (or pitch) close? Joba's weren't.

Was Joba's discipline not enough, or do you want him banned for life?

I'll paraphrase Terry Francona's comments after the game "If that young man was trying to get our attention he certainly suceeded."

Also, your favorite blabbermouth Curt Shilling said he's never saw any pitcher throw two consecutive pitches at another players head.

Crew chief Derryl Cousins said. "Those were two pretty nasty pitches the young man threw."

and Bob Watson cited Chamberlain for "inappropriate actions."

I take it you agree with Chamberlain that he just "slipped" with his grip on those two pitches, huh?

So much for the Yanks being a classy organization.

Nope. I take it you didn't read my response after the reaction. Never said he "slipped", now, did I? :coffee: Of course the pitcher will say something like that. When has one ever said "Yeah, I did it on purpose" ? Pedro?? Clemens?? Schilling??

Chamberlain was disciplined. I'm taking it Cabrera wasn't. My question remains: Was Joba's discipline not enough, or do you want him banned for life?

My take:

He was tossed from the game. Understood.

He was suspended and fined. No warning, no hit batter..... not understood, but accepted without complaint.

Are you saying MLB DIDN'T handle the situation properly? If not, why compare the disciplined player (Chamberlain) to the undisciplined player (Cabrera). What exactly did Chamberlain "get away with"?? Nothing, of course. He was dealt with. You're still griping about Joba because.........

Please don't use "Schilling" and "class" in the same post. I would have preferred it if Joba had just drillied Youkilis, though I wouldn't expect him to pull a "Schilling" by blaming the batter.

Didn't Youkilis get hit by 2 pitchers the very next day ? Where was the discipline? I'd rather see some consitency. Joba was disciplined, so let the same happen to the others.

I didn't see Joba's intent. 5-0 lead 9th inning.... perhaps he was sending a message (in the wrong way) for something?? Possibly. I can't rule that out.

Cabrera's intent, however, was quite clear.

I still don't see what there is to gripe about in Joba's situation after he was disciplined.

I'm happy with the discipline he received. I never said I think he should be banned for life. That's just you putting words in other people's mouths again.

However, the O's manager was quick to mention after the game that he's happy Pedroia wasn't hurt. I don't recall ever hearing that from Torre.

And about his arm falling off?

That move might go down as worse than the Pavano signing if he keeps this up...I really don't think his arm's going to last much longer.

I'm the VENTRILOQUIST, after all! Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!

Had the situations been the same (they weren't), perhaps Torre would have said something. I re-watched both incidents today and saw 1..... yes, 1.... close pitch: the one from Cabrera. Cabrera's intent was obvious. What was Joba's intent? You can guess, but you can't know .... the same applies to me. It appears that Joba went about sending a message the wrong way. The VERY close pitch thrown behind Pedroia, OTOH, looks like an attempt to injure. The aftermath of the incidents were just a bit different, weren't they? We both saw Cabrera AND Joba after the incidents.... Joba wanted to hurt someone? No. Cabrera did. The 2 are not the same. Cabrera looks like he'll hit someone from boston the next chance he gets, didn't he?

Thank you for the last paragraph. My son and nephews are making signs now. The weekend (Michigan) isn't (Wolverines) quite (suck) going perfectly. We're going early tomorrow to get in as soon as the gates are opened. Great seats behind home plate.... something Jerry won't ever forget.

I dont think Joba would try to hit Youk. If he wanted to hit Youk I'm certain that he could. He has good location. But I dont think the ball slipped away from him twice. Its hard to believe he would do that. But I dont think he tried to hit him in the head. It was a 1-1 count. Why would he pick the middle of the count to do that in? But for as many times as Boston players hit us we could hit them for the next 5 years and still not be equal.

But no harm was done to any Boston players so I dont get what the big deal is about??

Any chance the sox can make a trade with the D-Rays to get Reyes? He should be on the sox payroll with the "effort" he puts into beating them. ;)

Maybe I used a bad choice of words.
Perhaps they should stop giving up.

I knew they would win the game anyways.
I got a text saying: How did the Yankees and Boston do.

I replied and said: Yankees won in extras and Boston played the Devil-Rays.

They knew exactly what I meant.

At least you get to play the D-rays on the road.

What happened? We lost. I know Tampa hasn't beat you since Sunday, but, for the record, 2 of our middle relievers were pathetic.

Let me get this straight: the same Youkilis you cried about only missed a few games while our 1B, Phillips, is done for the season after suffering a broken wrist after being HBP? Why did you cry like a little girl about it? Doesn't make sense.

Keith shut the hell up. What are you getting at trying to make fun of injured players? I thought you had more class than that. Why don't you get hit in the wrist with a 90+ MPH fastball then come back and tell us about it. Until then, you really don't have any room to talk.

What was I making fun of? Yankees 1B Andy Phillips was hit in the wrist, just like Youkilis. The difference: Youkilis missed 7 games while Phillips had season ending surgery. You're not really trying to say Youkilis injury was more serious than Phillips season ending injury, right? Where did I say a wrist injury was funny? I'd just prefer the 7-game version to the season-ending version. How about you?

I wasn't making fun of anything....just trying to show PCE that the injury could have been much worse.

Either you don't know who Phillips is or you think I was "joking" by making something up.

Notes: Phillips to have wrist surgery
Tuesday operation to prematurely end first baseman's season
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Andy Phillips' troubled season has been dealt another bad break. The Yankees first baseman suffered a fractured pisiform bone in his right wrist and will have season-ending surgery on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old Phillips was hit by a Jason Hammel fastball in the fifth inning of the Yankees' 8-2 loss to the Devil Rays on Sunday. Phillips remained in the game to run the bases but did not come out for the next inning in the field.

Phillips was seen Monday by team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon and hand specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, who confirmed an original diagnosis of a fracture. The Yankees announced that Phillips will undergo surgery at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York and will miss an estimated four to six weeks.

"The timing of it, more than anything, is disappointing," Phillips said. "It's pretty simple math, if you go according to what they say the timetable is."

Phillips said that he feared the injury was rather serious as he left the game, heading directly to the clubhouse to receive ice treatment and a protective wrap.

"I had an indication," Phillips said. "I wanted to think it wasn't. I've never been hit in the hand before, so I don't know what to compare it to, as far as if it was broken or not broken. I knew by the way it felt that it probably wasn't your run of the mill, just getting hit by a pitch."

Phillips said that he felt as though "someone hit [him] with a hammer" on the wrist, which he said did not swell much overnight.

In 61 games for the Yankees, Phillips was batting .292 (54-for-185) with two home runs and 25 RBIs, enjoying something of a pleasant comeback story.

"He had a lot of good things happen in between some really tough times for himself," Torre said.

Phillips' Spring Training was interrupted by his mother's serious traffic accident back home in Alabama, costing him playing time as he competed to win a job as the right-handed half of a first-base platoon. Last season, his wife, Bethany, battled cancer after a molar pregnancy, an emotionally draining situation that he kept quiet even from teammates for most of the year.

"I guess going through some of the stuff I've gone through in the past has helped me deal with this a little bit easier," Phillips said. "I'm pleased I was able to come up here and contribute and help the team get back in the race. I feel good about that. But it's disappointing."

No problem. I could never do that. Jeter struggled with a wrist injury for a couple months after being HBP last season , Sheffield was lost for a long stretch AND Giambi played the last month + of last season with a broken bone in his wrist. I don't wish injuries on anyone and was glad to see Youkilis return fairly quickly.

You said the Series would go 6 at most anyways.
You could be right.

And IMO Wake should go game 4.

If you go down 3-1? Then you have Josh for game 5 on the road. You win that game and its 3-2. Then Curt in front of the home crowd. So say he pitched a gem. Then its all tied at 3 with Dice-gay pitching for all the marbles in game 7 at home. He is a much better pitcher at home then on the road.

So keep the faith.

I still rather Beckett go in game 4 so that we can use him in game 7 as well. Assuming he won his 3 starts, we would just have to squeeze one win out of Schilling or Dice-K. I just don't trust Wake at all. Of course if our offense doesn't wake up it doesn't really matter who we put on the mound.

PatsCrowEater
10-16-2007, 05:07 AM
The Indians won fair and square but I can't believe how much the umps have been squeezing Dice-K all year and especially last night.

He locates his slider right at the knees but the umps often call it low. Also, he doesn't just nibble at the corners, he often hits the corners - but again they call it a ball.

As a rookie he's just not getting the calls. Case in point, Timlin comes in the game and throws one a couple inches off the plate and the ump calls it a strike.

Last nights ump was squeezin both pitchers. I thought the game was called fair. The base running blunder by Ortiz turned out to be big, and Veriteks homer was about 3 innings too late. I still see the Sox winning in 7, even though NOBODY had the Indians/Rockies in the WS in april except maybe snapping turtle (congrtas btw), and a poor Browns fan or two..:P:D

I'm only going to blame half of this on Francona. The other half goes to our terrible, no-good, choking offense. These last 3 games have been a joke.

Unfortunately though, Wake proved me right. Francona is an idiot who has no idea how to manage a pitching staff. First, he switches Dice-K and Schilling in the order, despite them having success throughout the season and in the first round with Dice-K ahead of Schilling. Then he inexplicably puts GAGne out there in the 11th inning of game 2. Then facing a possible 3-1 deficit, he pitches Wake, who is coming off injury, over Beckett who is pure money in the playoffs. Now, assuming Cleveland hangs on, we are in deep doo-doo.

Beckett has proved in the past that he can pitch well on short rest. You should know that being a Yankees fan! I can guarantee you that Beckett wouldn't have given up close to 7 runs last night. Francona has just made bad move after bad move in this series. As for the Indians, yes they are a good team but our 1-2, and 6-9 hitters have made their pitchers look alot better than they really are. People can bring up the 04 ALCS but this just doesn't look like the same type of team we had back then. The 04 team was always upbeat, crazy, and never lost hope. This team, other than Manny and Papi, really doesn't seem to have the same emotion and swagger as the 04 team had. True, and to add on to that, if you watch clips from a Sox batting practice, Manny is always laughing and joking around with players from the other team. I would most compare him to Chad Johnson of the NFL. While CJ does act out and does things that some would consider "classless", most of the players in the NFL love him and they always joke around with him. So yeah, I'm not sure where Keith got this "not one ounce of class" thing from. If Manny doesn't have one ounce of class, I would hate to know how much A-Rod has. It would have to be in the negative numbers.

What is certain, however, is that those three blasts looked almost ridiculously inadequate against the magnitude of Cleveland's lead. To make matters worse, Ramirez, after his breathtaking 451-foot tee shot over the center field fence, had one of his vain, oblivious Manny-being-Manny moments. With his team still losing by four and its season in jeopardy, Ramirez posed for several seconds at home plate with both arms over his head, just as he did in a now-well-known photograph of his walk-off homer in Game 2 of the Division Series against the Angels.

Earth to Manny: When you're still behind 7-3, forget the hot-dogging and just run around the bases. If the Indians needed further motivation to finish off this victory -- or this series, for that matter -- the ex-Indian Ramirez may have given it to them.

Let's hold you to your standards. Your favorite question when you get upset at a-Rod is: Would Jeter do it? Let's hold Manny to that standard, unless you need to use a double standard. Would Jeter do it? Would Ortiz do it? Youkilis? Pedroia?

Case in point there is someone I know who has a hard time paying for services for his son with a disabilty and then you read someone who is not satisfied with $25 MM. that person can buy the school system etc. sorry for the Rant but topic like these are why Med does not like baseball like I did in the 70s and 80s etc. the greed kills me (hint this is Med LOL)

Arod will go down as one of the best of all time but him being tied to Boras is why I dont like him. No need for greed IMO

sorry for the rant ...what were we talking about

to summarize your Yanks can use that $25 MM and get pitching, what they need, especially someone to compiment Petitte and Wang.

Your 2 examples are an Indians fan and some writer for the Washington post? Yeah, you have no case. Nice try though.

The only person Manny's shenanigans hurt is himself. Until you can give me quotes from opposing players who have a problem with the various stunts that Manny pulls, you really don't have an argument.

You seriously believe only 1 Indians fan and 2 Washington Post writers have these takes? You're blind. I threw the post quotes out there because you would automatically shoot down anything from a NY paper.

You're dodging the question of why you want A-Rod to join the red sox.

I don't need an argument.... there is no argument. Manny disgraced his team last night. Support showboating all you want, but let's make this clear. If a Broncos player does a TD dance when losing by a significant margin, I'll go ballistic. Would you condone it? Why?

(and yes Jay, contrary to your belief, I was still a Sox fan back then) Now I haven't lost all hope, I think they can come back in this series, it just doesn't look like they will.

Well I dont like pitching people much on short rest. no matter how good they are. But I actually did want Beckett pitching on short rest just so they could lose that game and really be screwed. And Wakefield didn't give up 7 runs. Why not blame Youk for dropping that 2nd out? Wake cruised through the first 4 innings and then gave up a HR in the 5th inning. I dont blame Terry at all. Byrd probably would have pitched even better if Josh was pitching and wouldn't have given up 2 straight Hr's allowing him to get taken out. But Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda. So if Josh started and got the win then the Series would be tied at 2 and they would have Sabathia and Carmona going in the next 2 games against pitchers NOT named Beckett. Things wouldn't be too much better except you get to live for another day and have hope that Josh is starting in Game 7 for you. And how do you know this team doesn't have hope? I doubt anyone saw Boston coming back from 3-0 in 2004 after we blew them out in game 3. I was still scared because I know anything was possible and once we lost game 4 I was pissed as hell and people though I was sick because we were still winning the series but oh well.

And as for Manny.

He cracks me up for some reason.
I swear he is like learning disabled.
I laughed at his HR. I just love watching him admire his HR and the fact that they were down by 4 at the time was even funnier.
I hope they are down by 10 tommorow and he hits one and admires it.

He is something else.

You still haven't showed me quotes from any opposing players or managers who have a problem with what he did. If they don't have a problem with it, I don't see why you would. I really don't care what an Indians fan or a Washington Post columnist says.

And I don't have too much of a problem with what Manny did. He does that almost every time he hits a HR. Other pitchers are used to it and come to expect it. That's why he rarely ever gets plunked by a pitch after he does it. I honestly don't think he does it to show up the other team. He just lives in his own little world and he loves him some him.

But I will continue to say it. Manny's shenanigans don't hurt the team they are playing and they don't hurt the Red Sox. Most of the time, the only person he is hurting is himself. And he couldn't care less what other people think about him, which is an attitude I like!

 Calm down guys.
Its still far from over.

I'm sure you were mad being down 3-0 vs the Yankees too.
If you were even a fan back then.

And yea Josh could start on short rest but you act like he is an automatic W.
IF he is an automatic W then the series is obviously going back to Boston.

But suppose he had a bad start on game 4? Then he isn't going in game 5 and you lose. Then there is no Game 7. Just like Lou taking Z out early because he was saving him for game 4. There was no game 4.

The worst move Francona made was switching Curt with Dice IMO.
oh well.
The fans dont manage the Team.
Terry knows how to manage a team down 3-0 or 3-1.

But maybe the Indians are a good team? Ever think of that?
That's why the series is likely over.....sadly. The Indians are that good, in a way I'm not surprised they lead the series, but I am surprised at how they've done it.

Even if Beckett somehow manages a repeat of game 1, what about the other starting pitchers?

Schill? Dice-K? Wakefield? All gave up a lot of runs the first go around, so why would the second be any different?

I know, I know.......they came back from being down 0-3 against the Yankees in '04 right? WRONG! Different team, different year, and different opponent this time. What they did to the Yanks was incredible, but that was then and this is now.

Im still gonna root for the Sox to win it all, but the reality could be, and likely is, that they wont.

Is Derek Lowe available for us to win
and Cabrerra and a Long haired Johnny Damon who is much better than JD Nancy Drew and Coco Pop gun Offence Crisp

BTw why is Ellsbury not playing with the lack of offense from those two I listed. He was awesome in Sept. Give him a chance to maybe spark the team
just a thought or is Francona that much of a cement head to stick with these two non hitters?

I honestly don't know what Francona has been thinking in this series. Almost every decision he has made has backfired.

Considering he stuck with Bellhorn in the '04 playoffs, when he was hitting like a 4 year old.......I'll go ahead and say he's sticking with them as well.

His theory is, "Dont go away from what got you here." What got them there isnt what theyve got now so WTH Terry?

I understand your issues with greed. I'm reading a book about the Yankees from 1949-1963 and it's stunning to read about Yogi Berra getting a $500 signing bonus in his first deal with the Yankees. Not $500,000 .... not $50,000 .... not $5,000. $500. His monthly salary in the 1st deal: $70. He sent everything he earned back home to his parents and his mom would send him back $5 or $10. I remember my grandpa being furious that Reggie Jackson made $1 mil. per season (even though that was reported incorrectly... he made approximately $600,000 per season in his first stint with the Yankees.

A-Rod.... I love the guy's hustle and talent. I wish he weren't his own harshest critic, but it's hard for me to blast a guy for wanting to succeed so desperately that he has difficulty relaxing and just playing. His work ethic is second to none... generally the first Yankee to arrive each day and works hard at everything....reported early to spring training with his offseason workout partner/former high school teammate Doug Mientkiewicz. I loathe the league-wide greed (especially Boras clients like Nancy Drew and, if he opts out, A-Rod --I can't pretend 99% of the players aren't greedy, though, so I won't hate over the issue).

I loathe showboating, regardless of the sport. Save it for pro wrestling. Game-winning shots are one thing, but to showboat in a loss is something A-Rod would never do. He wouldn't showboat to begin with, of course. I also loathe lack of effort. Billy Martin rightfully pulled Reggie for half-a$$ing ... I still applaud Martin for doing so. I could never bring myself to say... "Aww... that's just Reggie being Reggie". I don't view such things as likable traits, nor do I understand why PCE and Bailey do.

Interestingly enough, Bailey got upset at me for quoting PCE's gripe that Manny quit on the team in consecutive Septembers. I Guess PCE finds it admirable now or he's forgotten...........

 @ Reggie being Reggie

My dad always talked about the time Martin pulled Reggie for loafing out there. He said most managers wouldn't have done that and he was proud of Billy. :salute:
