Pathetic on Manny's part. Plain old pathetic.

You may not agree with what the presidency does, or you may want to do something for yourself, but it is low when you don't visit wounded soldiers that allow you to have such freedoms as openly disliking the government or freedom to do pretty much whatever you want.

and BTB, you are TOTALLY spinning this on KB. Nobody here may be perfect, but you can be damn sure he would be visiting the troops had he the opportunity.

Not to mention, if you don't care what the baseball players do with their free time, then you shouldn't care if the Sox do anything good for the community, lest you look like a hipocrite.

I've never cared to much if players help their communities or not. If they do great, if not, that's their choice. They don't play pro sports to help their community. They play pro sports to play pro sports. How can you call me a hypocrite when I have never even mentioned things the Red Sox do for the community? Unless you can find a post of mine stating otherwise, that's an unfair charge to level against me. Have I done things for my community, sure I have, but I have no problem with those who haven't. But if a player wants to give back for their community, good for them, but I won't think any less of him if he doesn't. I swear, some of you dissect pro athletes' lives like they are running for President of the United States.

Fine, Spin Doctor. Manny gets a pass. What on earth would make me think otherwise?

Guess what, it's not just Manny. If the Yankees win the World Series and one of their players doesn't visit the veterans with them, you know how much I will care? Not one bit. Unless Manny (or any other pro athlete in any sport for that matter) does something off the field that hurts his team, he is free to do what he pleases and it concerns me none.

I never flat out called you a hipocrite. I said if you DID praise them for off field acts, then you could be considered one. Kind of a warning to your stance rather than name-calling.

Pro-athletes also have an image to uphold. Kids look up to athletes a hell of a lot more than the president and will try to emulate them at a much higher rate than any person involved in government. Why? Because it is a game that is fun to watch, thus exposing them to the athletes, and they live the life of glamour, like movie or music stars. That is why when an athlete commits a crime it is on a bigger stage than normal people. That is why when an athlete donates money to a charity it gets more publicity than someone who dedicated their life to a charitable foundation. And that is why when an athlete does something in poor taste it is frowned upon.

But quite honestly you defend your Sox with such blinders on it is amazing you can find the keyboard.

Unless they did something illegal or something that hurt their team, I don't care what they do off the field. And that goes for ANY player from ANY team. You can call it Red Sox blinders all you want (it's a convenient excuse to sidestep my argument) but it's not true. As for the influence on the kids, if a kid does something stupid because a pro athlete did it, that falls on that kid's parents for not teaching them better, not the athlete.

I would be furious... there is no way I'd give a member of the Yankees a pass in this situation. There are many petty off the field issues that we hear a lot about. Skipping the visit isn't petty. Of all the things a major leaguer can do, visiting wounded soldiers (especially on a scheduled team visit -- you missed this point completely....scheduled team trip..... It wasn't just a day off) should be a priority. Proud of those who visit, but you don't care about those who skip... fine. I disagree. First you said he probably had a legit reason to skip (and credited his teammates that attended!), then, once you heard the excuse, said you didn't care. Spin on, Spin Doctor.

My issue is the heroes, the soldiers. Your issue is Manny. I have the same view of Tavarez, who you don't mention, as Manny.

I never have and never will care what a pro athlete does with his spare time off the field. If you want to call it "spin" go right ahead. And now for the second time this season you have put words in my mouth (I'm keeping count this season just for fun). I never said he had a legit reason for missing. I only said that it's unfair to rush to judgment until the facts come out. But the fact is, you criticized Manny before you knew the facts. Just because you wound up being right doesn't excuse you for rushing to judgment.

Yeah, I'm a regular Nostradamus for "predicting" Manny didn't have a legit reason to skip. I also "predicted" sox fans would give Manny a pass. Quoting Dizzy Dean, "Who'd a thunk it"? I'm a fricking genious with such "predictions". While I'm on a roll, I'll predict that Mike Mussina won't win the Cy Young award and David Ortiz will hit some home runs this season.

You are so off base in thinking that I'm only giving Manny a pass because he is a Red Sock it's not even funny. No matter how many times you say it, it doesn't make it true. Reminds me of an old saying..."If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? The answer is 4. Just because you call a tail a leg doesn't make it one." Seriously though, how many times do I have to tell you that I don't care what a player does off the field, whether he be a Yankee, Red Sock, or any other team. Should I type it slower? I'm not sure how I can make it any more clear for you.

Timeline reminder:

1. You said: "I do strongly applaud the Sox players who went to visit the soldiers. I figured that went without saying. And like I said, I'm not going judge Manny positively or negatively on this issue until I know why he wasn't there. There are a plethora of reasons he could have missed it and it's unfair to judge him unless details of why he didn't go come out. I have a feeling, though, had this been some bench guy who never played that didn't make the trip you wouldn't have even mentioned it but when it comes to Manny, you never miss a chance to take a shot at him."

-- I judged Julian Tavarez in exactly the same light as Manny. The same would apply to Theo Epstein and Devern Hansack for skipping the visit, but I have yet to see anything other than rumors that they skipped. My issue is with the soldiers, not Manny Ramirez.

2. I showed you why Manny wasn't there.

3. You lobbed the "Mr. Perfect" criticism at me and said you didn't care what a player did off the field.

You "strongly applaud" those who did the right thing and don't care about those that did the wrong thing. I would be outraged if a member of the Yankees pulled the same stunt. I would have applauded Manny and Tavarez just like I did their teammates (which you failed to mention) had they done the right thing.

Call that putting words in your mouth.... but remember they were your words. I was quoting you, not making up things you said. Fine by me.

I'm deeply hurt that you no longer call me Mr. Perfect, so could you please get back to it?

Ok Mr. Perfect, what is so friggin bad about me for praising someone for visiting soldiers, but not criticizing them for not visiting soldiers? If they want to, good for them and I applaud them, but I'm not going to go apesheet if they don't go. That's their choice and I respect it.

And I didn't even want to go here but this isn't even Manny's native country so why should he be obligated to visit our soldiers?

Thank you. Curt Hennig would like it.

Manny has the freedom supplied by those soldiers to earn $20 + mil. per season playing here. Thanks for asking.

Who is doing bad: Hank Steinbrenner for the Yanks. He's making a fool of himself.

Huston Street looked terrible, Blanton looked OK.

For some reason ESPN2 was blacked out for me this morning. Weird since I live in Mississippi. And of course our guys didn't look good, they had to play at 6 AM for them. I heard the A's didn't look too good either. Boston will be fine once they get back in America and adjust to the time.

That's absolutely no excuse, they've been there a week!

They're used to the time by now, and they'll be used to it when they get back and have a couple of days to get reacquainted with the US.

The excuses come the first 2 games of their season in the US, because then they're understandably tired.

Of course in July when the Red Sox are 15 games out we'll still hear the excuses ;)

Hey....... I remember the 2nd time I watched my baseball team win the World Series...... it was only 30 years ago.

Much like Bailey, I thought that meant my team would win it every year...... then again, I was only 9 at the time, so what in the hell did I know?

I'm sure there's a lesson to be learned there for anyone over 9. ;)

--Edit-- I just checked the calendar and it's only April!!!
150 games before the playoffs start.... much less the World Series. I figured it had to be October with all this 2008 championship talk.

 I wish I cared about baseball when the Yankees won it all. The games were always on TV and I liked them but I could care less about watching it. I was too young and I regret it because I'd love to see them win it all this year. Just like I do every year.

But oh well. I'm glad we get a chance to play them right away. I want this nasty taste out of my mouth. Something about playing Boston that makes me sick. I get too into it and it gives me headaches. lol

But I'm sure BTB is having a different feeling now. If we would have swept Boston he would act like he don't care and now since they won 2 out of 3 I bet he thinks thier the best team ever.

I'm glad were only 1 game behind Boston in April. It feels like a successfull April. :salute:

BJ I always think Boston is the best team ever. Regardless of how they do against the Yankees!

Now, on to matters more important that the slime from the Bronx, the Red Sox won a captivating comeback game against the Indians with a huge HR from Manny and Papelbon shutting the door in the 9th. That's championship stuff right there!

Nah, I could never hate Big Papi. Just because I criticize someone doesn't mean I want them gone. Geez. It'll all even out though. Sean Casey and Nancy Drew will become Sean Casey and Nancy Drew again and Big Papi will start beasting. It's just frustrating to see him suck this bad so early on.

Crank it up and sing along with the "Murphys"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYAijiz7nZM

Tessie is the Royal Rooters rally cry
Tessie is the tune they always sung
Tessie echoed April through October nights
After serenading Stahl, Dinneen and Young
Tessie is a maiden with a sparkling eye
Tessie is a maiden with a love
She doesn't know the meaning of her sight
She's got a comment full of love

And sometimes when the game is on the line
Tessie always carried them away
Up the road from "Third Base" to Huntington
The boys will always sing and sway

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

The Rooters showed up at the grounds one day
They found their seats had all been sold
McGreevey led the charge into the park
Stormed the gates and put the game on hold
The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from "Third Base" to Huntington
They'd sing another victory song

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you

Even with all the questions at the bottom of our staff the Sox still have the best record in the AL. Once we finally get the 3-5 spots healthy and sorted out, this will be a tough team to beat. Once everyone gets healthy, I see a rotation of Beck/Dice/Schil/Lester/Wake with some Buchholz and Masterson sprinkled in. And the way our offense is playing, this is looking to be another glorious season in Red Sox nation.

For the record, here are the top payrolls for 2007.

Yankees--$218.3 million
Red Sox--$155.4

Cubs-----$115.9

OK, I'm on USA Today and I can select by team for past years.

USA TODAY's baseball salaries database contains year-by-year listings of salaries for Major League Baseball players on opening day rosters and disabled lists, 1988 through the current season. The search options here allow you to see salaries for specific players, plus median and total salaries for each team.

Figures for 2008, compiled by USA TODAY, are based on documents obtained from the MLB Players Association, club officials and filed with Major League Baseball's central office. Deferred payments and incentive clauses are not included. Team payrolls do not include money paid or received in trades or for players who have been released.

Yankees----$209 million
Red Sox----$133 million
Mets-------$137.7 million
Cubs-------$118.3
dodgers----$118.5
Tigers------$137.6

Not when it's $70 mil. (your math is off, my friend, but we'll run with it) your owner has in his pocket and no rules are being violated. John Henry has the $70 mil. to spend. Let him spend it. Let him run up a $250 mil. payroll. I wouldn't care. It isn't the way to win a championship. Take it up with Henry. Crying is beneath you. Do you realy want to plead poverty as a red sox fan? Won't work. Ridiculous. You know better.

I don't like the rules. No one would be over $150 mil. (and no one would be under $75 mil. ), were it up to me. Teams going over $100 mil. would pay a 100% tax. Problem is..... Bud Selig is the worst commissioner of my lifetime.

Accept it: Henry and Steinbrenner have the same amount of wealth.

I really can't follow this rsn "logic".........

when the Yankees win the world series, I could give less than a $#&% about what the red sox spend or do. I'm happy. It's wonderful. I don't care who boston re-signs (I would never hold anything against a team for re-signing its own free agents), signs, or trades for. Spend $600 mil. ..... I wouldn't care.

Is jealousy what keeps the crying going strong? I don't get it.

what happened?

You're way off. When payroll came up in this thread, along with any from Yankee trolls on the RSN board, it is Yankee fans who bring it up, and inaccarrately.

I'm sure you spend time on the Yankee board, and if you do, the fans there can't seem to stop talking about the Red Sox. Why?

They can't seem to accept that the Red Sox are the team to beat in the AL. Is history with the Yankees? Of course it is. Any true baseball fan understands that the Yankess consistently put out a good product and repect alot of their players.

But the thing is, Yankee fans continue to try and rationalize why the Red Sox are the better team. And the salary card keeps coming up and up and up.

According to many Yankee fans, the Sox have the #2 payroll, which is wrong. It is #4. It is Yankee fans who are jealous of the current state of affairs.

Yankees fans are spoiled. There have been so many World Series Championships.

And Yankee fans can't admit the truth.

Since 2004, the Sox are the better team. I don't care about payroll. But I do find it funny that is what Yankees fans use for their rationalization though.

what happened?

Dice-K left the game in the 5th after throwing a couple warm-up tosses. Matsuzaka was holding his back and side as he walked off the mound. Matsuzaka said he had a similar experience with that type of injury in the 2nd or 3rd year of his professional career and felt it was best not to take any chances. The Red Sox are calling it shoulder fatigue.

No worries though. Dice-K might miss a couple starts but Clay Buchholz is ready to come off the DL and take his spot. It's a great feeling for Red Sox fans to have so much quality depth in our starting pitching.

Way, way, way off base.

Sure, I screwed up. I missed that the $155 mil. payroll for the red sox was way, way, way back in 2007. Silly of me. On that end, I'm impressed that they lowered their payroll this season.

Doesn't mean that I buy the premise that Billionaire John Henry is any nearer the poor house than Billionaire George Steinbrenner. Fans of the Yankees OR boston crying about payroll is something I wasn't meant to understand.

I am jealous of nothing. Had you posted in this thread last season, you would have been congratulated on a Championship just like Bailey and co.

All I brought up about payroll is how ridiculous it is of sox fans to complain about payroll. Show me where I complained. I dare you. Again, John Henry can spend as much or as little as he wants to. Believing otherwise simply doesn't work. That isn't a shot at Henry.... Steinbrenner is in the exact same boat. Again, I hate the current payroll setup, both the top and bottom ends. The problem can be solved by a real commissioner. Unfortunately, all MLB has is Selig.

I know how to read the standings. I fully realize that boston has won 2 titles since 2004. I have never failed to credit a team for winning a title, whether I like them or not. What have I failed to admit?

I am not jealous of boston's titles. I've watched my team win 6. I have no reason whatsoever to appreciate those 6 titles so little that I would disrespect them by being jealous of any other team.... in any sport.

You are assuming I addressed this specifically to you, which I am not. As many folks tend to, I addressed it in general. So if that offended you, my apologies.

I also agree with you on payrolls. If they got it and want to spend it, have at it. But if you ever happen to venture over to the Sox board, you will see that my statements about alot (not you!!) of Yankess fans will prove my statements correct.

I could say the same thing about your statements regarding Red Sox fans complaining about a "small market" team because I never said that. You can check that out on the Sox board. But I don't take offense to it because I know some have.

See, it's the same thing, just turned around. However, I do not agree that the Red Sox and Yankees payrolls are both "up there" so they are the same. That's just not accurrate.

Back on to the diamond, people make a big deal over the current state of affairs in New York and their pitching staff...whether they should have traded the young guys for Johann. My 2 cents is they did the right thing that will probably start paying dues next year. Kennedy and Hughes may be taking their lumps, but my bet is they will be very good next year.

I didn't say the payrolls are the same.... merely that they are whatever the owners want them to be. Lack of funding doesn't prevent either owner from doing whatever they want. The Mets, Dodgers, and Angels, among others, are in the same boat. If you want to talk $$, look no further than the Angels owner.

The Santana non-move was a very interesting study. When the media thought he was headed to the Yankees, perception was that the big, mean, evil Yankees were buying everyone. When reality sent him to the Mets..... the media never used the words "small market" in association with the Mets, but they were viewed in that exact context, and it was all but labeled the greatest move since Babe Ruth's acquisition.

With more bad news on Phil Hughes (broken bone hasn't healed yet), it's tough to see a payoff for the Yankees from the non-move this season, at least on the pitching end (I wasn't interested in trading Melky Cabrera), but I agree that it will next season. Unfortunately, however, I'm certain it will end up costing Brian Cashman his job. He became scapegoat #1 the moment he refused to increase the payroll to improve the team on paper (fantasy baseball mentality that doesn't equal titles). I believe Cashman is taking the proper route, re-signing your own key free agents and bringing help up from the minors, but it takes patience, and the Steinbrenner's have never demonstrated patience.

The Yankees are off today, but that doesn't make it a "baseball free" day for me. I'm already counting down the hours to 6 PM, when I get to watch Dan McCutchen make his 2nd start in AAA. It doesn't have a damned thing to do with payroll, it's all about the love of the game.

I can't speak for the "average" Yankees fan. I was way beyond that stage when I was 12. ;)

I think he still has some good ball left in him. I say sign him to a low-risk contract and if he sucks, get rid of him. It couldn't hurt.

And I just noticed that KB has more posts in this thread then anyone else.

how did you find that out?

Beware of tough guy Coco Crisp!

He'll take you out and then refuse to watch the other team retaliate.

Big bench-clearing brawl tonight...the general consensus is that it was stupid for him to charge the mound.

Anyway, lots of Rays players could be suspended.

With the suspensions of Casy, Crisp, and Lester, it certainly makes for an intersesting June. Good thing they are staggered.

On the positive side, JD has been smacking the ball since he moved to the 3 slot.

Masterson became the first pitcher in the history of Fenway Park to go unbeaten in his first four starts. Francona announced before the game that he hoped Jacoby Ellsbury would return to the Boston lineup Tuesday. … Bedard has allowed one run in 12 innings against Boston this season.
