Two walks by Jaret....I mean Chase Wright to open the game. It's rookie against rookie.

Meanwhile, Dice-K has retired the first six with ease at the Rogers Center. He's no rookie.

Wait, maybe he is.

Don't speak too soon there PCE.

Not a dominating performance, but Chase is in line for his first career win in his first start.

5 innings, 3 runs, 5 hits, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts.

Yankees are up 8-3 in the fifth because of a 2 run homer by A-Rod, and HRs from Douggy and Posada.

Meanwhile, Diepukey (I know, I know) and the Sox are losing 2-1.

Although he does have 10 Ks.

Still, all that matters in the end is the W, and he's in line to be 1-2 after this game.

Hopefully Toronto hangs on and wins.

and Wright doesnt sound like hes doing anything great but hopefully Yankees hang on and win.
A-rod is having a monster April

He didnt hit his 8th HR last year until like May something.

I'm pulling for him to get triple crown :)

JC, doesn't sound like you watch the games, being in Wyoming.

If I were you, I'd save up some money and buy mlb.tv :)

Otherwise, I hope you know about mlb.com's gameday, live pitch-by-pitch coverage filled with lineup stats and everything. If you don't know about it, ask me and I'll give you more detail.

But if I were you I'd get mlb.tv.

Chase Wright pitched well for his first ever start.

Started off shaky, walking the first two and allowing a run in the first. Still let first two on in the second, but finished off better.

Starting getting ahead of hitters in the third fourth and fifth, and that's when he started striking some out. But because of the struggle earlier in the game, he got tired in the fifth.

5 innings and 3 runs isn't terrible though. ERA would be around 5.4, which isn't great, but is far, far better than Westbrook's 43.2 ERA from today, which balooned his season ERA to over 12.

He's only 24 though, and towards his last few innings he was much more comfortable.

I'm happy with what I saw.

 Yea thats what sucks about living in Wyoming. But I got XM last year just so I could get Yankee games :salute:
It just sounds like hes always in a jam. Every inning I heard Sterling say: Wright gets out of a Jam. But for a first start its not bad. He got all the kinks and butterflies out of his system now

But we will see what happens.
Once summer starts I will head back to Connecticut where I can watch the Yes network. Thats the only part I like about being back there really  and my Grandma lives there.

Plus im more busier then past years anyways. . But I called off work for being sick today otherwise I wouldnt get to listen to the game. :(

I would love to get MLB TV though. I've got money for it but I wont buy it because it would be a waste to miss a lot of games do to work and stuff.

Ichiro rules or Matsui rules?? Ichiro rules: yes. Matsui rules: No, because he played professionally in Japan. Don't ask me to explain.... I still don't understand the rules. :ugh:

As RYO said, you spoke too soon about Wright. He did OK..... quite well considering he has only made 2 starts in AA and was understandably nervous. I don't think it took $100 mil. to get him either.

Shall we compare A-Rod's #'s to Pedroia's while we're at it??

Lowell: .267, 0 HR, 8 RBI

A-Rod: .383, 8 HR, 21 RBI

A-Rod: .383, 8 HR, 21 RBI

A-rod so far is having a better year then everyone. Only like 2 players I think in the AL have a better BA then him. But as far as HRs and RBI's then A-rod owns that category.

Wow, ARod has been out of his mind. Does anyone think its because when the Yankees wouldnt commit to him, he stopped caring about being loved so much? I had a feeling he might have a big year for that reason.

BTW, Michael Kay has the worst baseball announcers voice in the biz now. Couldnt they find someone better than that? And coming from a Cubs fan thats bad since we have Kermit the frog in the booth.

I'm not sure what flipped the switch with Alex, but he's been amazing. The NY press swarmed him from the moment St started with questions about his opt-out clause..... and he said he was just going to focus on baseball and deal with everything else after the season. It didn't hurt a bit to add his former high school teammate, Doug Mientkiewicz. They trained together prior to ST (A-Rod pushed himself extremely hard in the off-season). It's great to see A-Rod happy. I've never seen a more talented player in pinstripes..... and the boo-birds can go.......

I much prefer the games without Michael Kay. The rest of the TV gang are former players. Al Leiter and Joe Girardi are outstanding. I still miss the best of the bunch, Jim Kaat :salute: , who retired at the end of last season.

The bad: RHP prospect Humberto Sanchez (part of the Sheffield trade) will have Tommy John surgery, ending his 2007 season and wiping out a big chunk of 2008. He has tons of talent.... and the Yankees are still loaded with pitching prospects, but obviously this hurts.

Besides..... one of their players will go on the DL late in the season (after a multitude of our players go on the DL early in the season)..... it's all the excuse they need. "If our weak- hitting catcher hadn't went on the DL for a month, we'd have won it all".

Please don't try to compare those injuries (outside of Lester....which doesn't fall under "injury" necessarily) to those of the Yankees in 2006. Have you forgotten Sheffield's injury (costing him MONTHS, not weeks) and Matsui's horrific broken wrist?? Surely you remember Matsui's injury.....suffered in a game against boston. You may have forgotten about injuries to Cano and Pavano (among others), too..... but I'll never use injuries as an excuse for the Yankees.

Damon is doing quite well. He didn't start Saturday, but PH. He should start tonight. Yep.... he's one tough S.O.B. He plays THROUGH injuries, remember?? I'm sure you haven't forgotten. Some OF's play through injuries when their team needs them..... others just worry about "being Manny". ;)

Part of me is worried...there's a lot of pressure on Hughes here...the team is in the midst of a losing streak, the pitching staff is in shambles with the injuries it's been facing...we all know one game doesn't make or break a player, but I would feel much much more comfortable if Hughes was making his first major league start on the road in another ballpark, say against the royals maybe?! lol

nonetheless, i'm stoked to see him pitch!

keithbishop

Desperate times require desperate measures.

The Yankees, as always, will persevere. Hughes can handle a start or 2. If it goes beyond that, I'll be surprised, but he certainly has the talent to earn more starts.

No excuses for injuries (I'll sae that for .....fans of other teams ;) )...... just "play ball!!".

Tonight's loss was disgusting. This IS a talented BP, but April has been utter chaos due to lack of innings from our starters. Wang did a tremendous job before tiring in the 7th, but the BP couldn't seal the deal. Keep in mind, though, that things will fall in place with Pettitte, Wang, and Moose heading the rotation.

We also had an 8-11 start in 2005. The slow starts get frustrating (only 9-8 in 2006).

I have to say not being mean but the Yanks could be in trouble if they dont turn it around soon..

It has nothing to do with the Sox. It has to do with their starting pitching, which is pretty banged up and it has shown that Wright and Hughes were rushed a bit because of their unfortunate circumstances.

To get swept by a bad Tampa team is not good for anyone.

I think they will be fine but need to start playing better starting vs the Sox this weekend. It is going to be tough as the Sox are playing well when not facing Toronto their nemesis.

I say the Sox win 2 out of 3 this weeked. Just my humble non-biased opinon.

I dont have any agenda. I respect the yanks a lot because of KB :salute:

True, but keep in mind that Karstens pitched quite well for us last season and was rushed back from the DL this season. Following his last rehab start this season, Cashman said he needed at least 1 more rehab start, but we had too many injuries to allow for it.

Can he produce some pitching for you guys? It is sorely needed

No offense but the Yanks remind me of the 90s Texas Rangers. All offense and not great pitching. Yes injuries suck but even with a healthy Mussina your bullpen is not as good as it used to be.

Some trades should be in order. I am sure NY will be fine. They always are like a cat. No matter how fall they fall out of a tree, they always land on their feet.

The bidding on Clemens has started.

I guess Pavano may pitch again....eventually. He threw a BP session last weekend and is to throw another by tomorrow. MAYBE he gets a minor league rehab start Monday, another Saturday the 12th..... and can re-join the Yankees by May 17th, but I expect nothing from him. Hell...it may be August 17th with the way he gets hurt ever other day.

Rasner has some major league experience for us. An off day May 14th will help. I just hope that Moose is ready. Just a guess, but I think Cashman would have preferred letting him get a minor league rehab start or 2 before activating him from the DL.

Matt DeSalvo is 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA at AAA, so he'll also be an option.

The Yankees have fired “director of performance enhancement” Marty Miller.

A series of injuries, the latest coming last night when Phil Hughes tore his left hamstring, led to the outster of Miller, who joined the team this season.

Several players had questioned Miller’s methods and his lack of experience in professional baseball.

I
That seems to be the case. Several players have been upset about the new training techniques, which placed a heavier emphasis on stretching than anything else. Training SHOULD be a mix of weight lifting, running, and stretching.

From a fellow Yankees fan: http://btbfansite.proboards24.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1178115544

By far the most common cause of hamstring injuries originates from an imbalance between the quadriceps muscles (located at the front of the upper leg) and the hamstring muscles. The quadriceps are a very large, strong group of muscles which help to extend the leg. These muscles can become so strong that they overpower the hamstrings, putting a massive amount of tension on the hamstring muscles. Combine strong quadriceps with weak hamstrings and you have a hamstring injury waiting to happen. Other factors which contribute to hamstring injuries are a lack of flexibility and poor strength of the hamstring muscles. Also, when the hamstrings become fatigued or tired they are more susceptible to injuries.

Another major risk factor is weak hamstring tendons. This is often a result of habitual over-stretching and insufficient strength of the hamstring muscles (weak muscles and weak tendons go together, because activities that strengthen the muscles also strengthen the tendons). Habitual overstretching comes from an excessive practice of daily forward bends with insufficient recovery time in between. This can break down collagen molecules (the building blocks of the tendon) faster than the body can replace them. Yoga teachers are especially at risk for this, because they often maintain a strenuous personal practice and also demonstrate forward bends day after day in their classes.

The people who have the hardest time avoiding excessively stretching an injured hamstring are yoga teachers themselves. Many yoga teachers instinctively feel that they can "stretch their way out" of the injury, so they do too much too fast. They are often reluctant to give up the vigorous practice they love and the busy teaching schedule that earns their livelihood. They feel that to teach properly, they must demonstrate hamstring stretches to their students. Even those who back off from strong hamstring stretches at first often re-introduce them as soon as they start feeling better, which is usually too soon.

Hamstring injuries can be prevented or greatly reduced by properly stretching and warming up the hamstring and quadricep muscles prior to any physical activity, practice or competition. The athlete should participate in a strength and conditioning program appropriate for their sport. Conditioning of the connective tissue (ligaments and tendons) can greatly reduce the incidence of injury. It must also be understood that the rate of strengthening of connective tissue lags behind the rate of strengthening of muscle. Therefore the training program should consist of work involving low weight and high repetitions for 3 to 4 weeks at the beginning of a strength and conditioning program to begin the strengthening process of connecting tissue before muscle strength is increased.

The #5 starter, be it Rasner (most likely bet because he is already on the 40-man roster and has some major league experience), DeSalvo, or Clippard (DeSalvo and Clippard don't have much AAA experience and haven't pitched in the majors), will have to make 6 starts between now and July (scheduled off days allow the #5 spot to be skipped a few times).

Cashman won't make a panic trade, but you never know what will pop up.

So you are saying the Yanks will sign both Mark Prior & Kerry Wood next year? ;)

Right after extending Pavano's contract. ;)

I hope the Yankees keep Mike Myers for the entire season. He looks great in pinstripes. :D

I would have preferred Clippard over De Salvo, but I guess they're going with who's hot right now....

Let's play two!

Makes me curious to find out how much the Yankees will offer Roger Clemens to come to the rescue

You're absolutely right. He hasn't been bad at all. He catches flak for not getting EVERY out, but he's been quite effective overall.

I'd guess that one factor is age. DeSalvo is 4 years older. He was taken off the 40 man roster after last season, so he either needs to show something this year or he will be gone, be it via trade or otherwise.

How old is he 26, 27?

Good win in the first game, now we need to pull off the sweep.

Starting May 3-0 would be good.

26. Abraham said the Yankees hope DeSalvo can handle the #5 spot for a while.

Game 2 will be underway shortly.
