We have one for hockey so why not one for basketball?

MJ, hands down.
Just thought I'd get the Jordan wagon rolling right off the bat.

Jordan, no contest. although Lebron may eventually give him a good challenge.

Well, as you can see I voted for Wilt Chamberlain, the greatest rebounder of all time and argueably the most dominant scorer of all time!

It's one of three, when you consider all around greatness:

Jordan
Magic
Oscar Robertson.

Yes, I know Wilt, Russell, Jabbar, and Bird were all fantastic. No arguments there.

But Jordan was called the best ever by even Magic, whom I personally consider the better all around player, due to his greater versatility.

Robertson was a pre-cursor to both of these. He averaged a triple double over a whole season!

They could all score by shooting or penetrating, they all played defense, they all rebounded and passed well.

In essence, they were the the only true 5 threat players the game has ever seen.

The ONLY reason I give Magic ever so slight an edge over Jordan is because he was more complete a player throughout his career. Jordan was primalrily a slasher when he first came in, but eventually became known as a deadly jump shooter. he also has to learn to play better defense and passing early on. And when he did, he was phenomenal at it. But he had to learn, because, well, as everyone knows, he is stubbornly competetive. To his detriment early in his career, unfortunately.

Magic was a force of nature at 20, already doing all of those things very well as a rookie. Statistically, Johnson's offensive production ranks among the game's best. Assuming every assist creates 2 points, he created 54.85 points per 48 minutes, compared to Michael Jordan's 50.98 or Wilt Chamberlain's 40.82. However he would rank second to Oscar Robertson if simply based on created points per game. His career total for assists is the third highest (John Stockton is the leader with 15,806), and his career total for triple-doubles is also the second highest with 138 (Oscar Robertson leads this category with 181). He holds the record for highest career average for assists-per-game with 11.2, and has the career playoff record for most assists with 2,346.

I think it is MJ without a doubt.

Some of the older players though I think are a little underestimated.

I say Bill Russel as he won the most championships and made everyone better.

MJ is a close second.

I cant even believe there are options up there with Jordan. The options should be :

1. Jordan
2. Jordan
3. Jordan
4. jordan
5. Jordan
Or
6. Jordan

Problem is, most of the people who voted know nothing about basketball, same with the best player in hockey, all Gretzky and Jordan... :coffee:

Thats saying something about those two athletes isnt it? I am a huge baseball fan (My passion for football is greater) and am willing to say that the best defenseman I have ever seen is ALEX CORA (The guy is a hustler). Now people would think I dont know what I am talking about because I didnt say a name like Jeter, A-Rod, Ichiro etc. and the discussion would be open to dispute. However with Guys like Gretzky and Jordan. Even the world of ignorance has heard of them, and IMHO thats saying something. :coffee:

By the logic being used to say Russell is the best, that pretty much makes Derek Jeter the best baseball player around too, does it not?

By the way, I voted Jordan.

Did you ever see Roberto Alomar play?

Did you ever see Roberto Alomar play?

Yeah he wasnt bad at all. I just seen AC make the kind of plays that I never thought were possible. He was our starting 2nd baseman here in LA during the best times I ever had at Dodger Stadium (04 season). Too bad Boston doesnt play him much. Best double play trio I have ever witnessed. 6-4-3 (Izturis-Cora-Green).

What are you basing this assumption on........??

I watched basketball and was an avid fan for the past 10 years.
I don't watch it nearly as much as I used to but I watched some of the greatest players to ever play the game.

I suppose that because these two names were thrown out in "greatest ever" threads that people only say that because they are biased. Any person who can single-handedly draw acclaim to the sport they are playing have to be pretty good at what they do, possibly even the best.....

I said MOST.

Is it not true that when asked about the best players ever in any sport, most people would respond:

NFL: Dan Marino

NHL: Wayne Gretzky

NBA: Michael Jordan

MLB: Babe Ruth

Most people in this thread haven't really given a reason to support that fact, just, "Jordan is really good". He is defenatly one of the greatest basketball players of all time and maybe THE greatest, but to just respond, "Jordan", immediatly, doesn't really show me that you watch much basketball, but instead just agree with most of the experts... :coffee:
