Pete Rose has to be considered too, although he played a long time, as opposed to being a pure hitter (in terms of average).

Gwynn is the only player in the top 20 since they lowered the mound, which makes no sense, since that was supposed to make it easier for hitters. But it shows how out of place he was in the steroids era. A pure contact hitter.


Did you know Shoeless Joe Jackson has the third highest average of all time?

I can only go by the ones i've seen play, and I'd go with Tony Gwynn, and probably Don Mattingly second.

I say Ted Williams as he was the last player to hit 400. I also believe that he had the best eye of anyone that ever played with his huge walk total. Ted hit 521 HRs but becasue of military service he missed at least 4 full and maybe 5 years. He would have definately hit 600 HRs and had over 3000 hits. Ted is the best pure hitter IMHO. :beer:

When asked why he didn't hit home runs like Ruth he told reporters he didn't want to. He said anynone can hit them. In the next two games he hit 5 just to prove he could then went back to playing the game the way he believed it should be played.
