With the start of training camp, another off season is behind us. We made it! I tune into SportsCenter and see men running around in football helmets, and I nearly get tears in my eyes. I open the paper and see that all our draft picks are signed and present and I get chills. The dog days of summer are over boys and girls. My hat is off to Paul Tagliabue and the NFL owners for striking the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, and insuring this beloved sport will not be threatened with a stoppage any time soon. I don’t know if people realize just how huge a thing that was.
I’ll be curious to see how things pan out this preseason. A few topics of interest:
How will our offense look minus Gary Kubiak? Despite his coaching for the enemy now, Kubs will always have a place in my heart. I wish him well, unless of course he gets in our way, in which case I hope to crush him. I for one, am looking forward to the birth of the Mike Heimerdinger era.
Who will emerge at the running back position? It will be interesting to say the least. We all know the battle going on for starting tailback, but interestingly enough, I recently read that fullback may be up for grabs as well. I’m thinking we’ll see another season of running back by committee. Hell, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
And what of the WR’s? What will Lelie fetch? Will his career ever recover from the worst mistake of his professional life? Will Walker make us forget all about Lelie? Who will emerge as the third wideout?
Finally, what about our D-line’s ability to get after the quarterback? Again, I think it’s going to be a deep rotation all year long. Although, I would love to see someone step up with a career year and become a household name around the league. We haven’t had that around here in a long, long time.
Today is a great day kids. I’m so excited I can hardly see straight.
