K,

I tried this on another board and it flopped. I will give it a second try.

The rules are as follows. State a quote from a song, poem, person etc, so on and so forth. You will not be limited in that regard. Be sure to give credit for the quote, or provide the information as unkown.

Yes, it was wriitten shortly after his 4-year-old son Connor (sp?) fell to his death from a high-rise balcony or window.

They played that song here in OKC a LOT after the Murrah Building bombing. :(

Ernesto "Lucky" Dube

Lucky was born on 3rd August,1964, in Ermelo, Eastern Transvaal, South Africa.

At the age of 9 Lucky was chosen as library assistant at his school. His desire to learn about the rest of the world and South Africa's controversial history had him immediately immersed in the world of literature.It was here that he became acquainted with the Rastafarian religion, discovering it in an Encyclopedia. He also read about the music which is synonymous with Rastafarianism - REGGAE. His interest grew the more he read and found out, and soon he was working and earning enough money to buy Peter Tosh albums (which were the only Reggae albums available in South Africa at the time). Whilst he was at school he founded his first band - THE SKYWAY BAND - and raised enough money to buy his first guitar from a stage play he produced. His talents soon came to the attention of Richard Siluma, who was a distant relative and a record producer, and it was clearly evident to Richard that Lucky had a huge talent and a wonderful potential as a mbaqanga singer.

In 1979 Lucky launched his career as a mbaqanga singer and along with future slave members Thutukani Cele and Chris Dlamini recorded an album in 1982 as a member of the band THE LOVE BROTHERS entitled MBAQANGA. In the next 3 years Lucky went on to release his debut solo album entitled LENGANE NGEYETHA which spawned his first hit single and went gold. His next album KUKUWE also went gold. He subsequently released another two Zulu traditional albums.

During 1985 and without the knowledge of his record company, Teal Records, Lucky and Richard went into the studio and recorded "Rastas Never Die" - the first ever reggae album to be recorded in South Africa.Because of the political situation and censorship in the government controlled media it did not reach the airwaves and was banned immediately. The album gained awareness but did not sell well. Record company executives demanded a return back to traditional Zulu pop music. Lucky featured in his first movie - Getting Lucky - and was involved in producing the soundtrack. In 1986 Lucky's second reggae album was released through GRC and entitled - THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN.

Richard and Lucky also recorded an album under the name of 'Oom Hansie' which was a Afrikaans/Zulu rap album and entitled 'Help My Krap'.

The beginnings of his first backing band were also now being formed. In 1987 Lucky's third reggae album was released entitled - SLAVE - and he had huge hits with "I've Got You Babe ", "Slave" , and " Back To My Roots". With his backing band The Slaves, he performed at huge shows in Johannesburg, pulling crowds in excess of 50,000.

In 1988 due to popular demand, GRC re-released RASTAS NEVER DIE.Lucky embarked on his first international trip to promote the album SLAVE, which was now released on the Celluloid label in France. In 1988 TOGETHER AS ONE was released and featured the hit title track which was once again based on the South African situation. He asked all South Africans to unite. Black and white.

Lucky hit the road again and performed to crowds in excess of 65,000.

In 1989 sixty of South Africa's top musicians, including Lucky, embarked on a series of shows in France under the banner of Franchment Zoulou tour. Lucky established himself as a truely international artist, and got rave reviews at every show. He continued on to tour the US.

This year also gave Lucky the chance to act in his first full length feature film entitled 'Voice In The Dark', in which he co-starred with John Savage.

1989 also saw the release of PRISONER and within 5 days it had hit double platinum.

1990 was a year to take stock and perform mainly in Africa, performing in venues ranging from small township halls to Ellis Park, at which 80,000 people went to see Lucky perform.
In 1991 Lucky toured the United States again and then made an historical appearance at the world famous reggae Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica - the first time ever for a South African artist and his long awaited dream was realised. He was the first and only artist to be invited back for a 25 minute encore. The tour carried on to Australia, Japan and Ghana.

PRISONER became his biggest selling album, with in excess of 1,000,000 copies sold worldwide.

The electrifying double live album CAPTURED LIVE was released featuring some of his best known songs with live arrangements. The album quickly reached platinum status and outsold any international music release sales on a live album.
Lucky wons BEST MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR at the annual OKTV awards in South Africa.

HOUSE OF EXILE was released and Lucky headlined the first ever reggae festival in South Africa - REGGAE STRONG FOR PEACE - and the proceeds of the live album, with the title track written by him, went to a crisis line in Soweto. The REGGAE STRONG FOR PEACE album went gold and a live video was released.

all right, i have to defend myself a little bit here. either i'm the most shallow reader of all time or you're taking the pessimist view of the Robert Frost poem that i've ever seen.

Frost--in my opinion--isn't saying that he's going to lie about which road he took regardless of his choice, he's saying that when given the choice between choosing to do what everyone else is doing and being his own man and an individual, he'll take the road less traveled and be different from everyone else.

now, does that analogy seem entirely unreasonable? it seems to make perfect sense to me and it doesn't seem that complicated. honestly, i don't know where you got that stuff about lying. it makes no sense at all.

Perhaps I was a bit stiff last night when I posted. Blame it on the burbon.

Here are the elements of the poem that indicate Frost's attitude.

1) When he comes to a fork in the road, he realizes he can only choose one path. He looks at each of them. Notice the phrase:

"As just as fair",

2) Right after that, he states "having the better claim". This suggests it could even be the easier path....until...

3) He clarifies it for the reader "for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same."

This means that the paths are nothing special, neither worn, or neglected.

Here is where the irony of Frost kicks in.

The narrator realizes that one day he will have to explain his actions (to children, his co-workers, or even on a message board)

4) "I shall be telling this with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence:"

The colon means that what follows will be how he will tell it. It has a very maganamious tone.

5) Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- (pause for effect)
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The fact remains that neither path was special, and the narrator even stated that he would come back to take the other path one day, BUT when it comes time to tell the story, the narrator will orate his experience to such extent, that everyone will run out to take the road less traveled.

congratulations, man. your jaded, cynical reading of a fairly simple Robert Frost poem has officially killed this thread. i would love to rant about this subject until i'm blue in the face, but stupid, petty bickering has no place on this thread or this board so i'm going to end it here. you're not totally devoid of the ability to recognize something inspirational because you posted a couple good quotes earlier in this thread, but your dissection of this poem absolutely baffles me. that said, i'm going to simply refute one specific point you made and then give you my reading of the poem. then it's done.

1. Frost EXPLICITY says that he doubts he'll ever get back to the fork in the road.

"yet knowing how way leads on to way,
i doubted if i should ever get back."

this means that as time goes by, he knows the changes that can happen in a person's life and he doubts that he'll ever get back to that spot. it may be the only part in the poem that is not up for discussion. it's clearly stated.

2. i read the poem this way: when a person comes to a fork in the road in their life, they can either choose to be a follower and take the safe path that most everyone else has taken or they can be a leader and take the path that fewer people have chosen . . . or make their own way altogether. though Frost describes the seeming equality of the two pathes, he clearly says that he took the one less traveled so i choose to believe that this was, indeed, the case. that he took the road that most other people didn't. this is why i feel the poem is inspirational--the road less traveled is usually the more difficult--not the easier--and the one filled with more obstacles and it is the triumph over these obstacles that gives a person strength. The courage to take this path in the first place is what builds character and i feel that Frost is saying in the last stanza that when he's telling this particular story to his kids and grandkids in the future that he's saying he's proud he made his own road and it was the hardships along the way and triumph over them that made him the person he is today . . . that it made all the difference in his life.

obviously, it's poetry and therefore open to subjective interpretation so i'm going to let it die here. case closed. end of story.

Socrates was a famous old Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. He later died from an overdose of wedlock, which is apparently poisonous. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline.

Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king. Dying, he gasped out "Same to you, Brutus."

It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood.

Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper, which was very dangerous to all his men.

Delegates from the original 13 states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a Virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered electricity by rubbing two cats backward and also declared, "A horse divided against itself cannot stand." He was a naturalist for sure. Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead.

Abraham Lincoln became America's greatest Precedent. Lincoln's Mother died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin which he built with his own hands. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emasculation Proclamation.

Johann Bach wrote a great many musical compositions and had a large number of children. In between he practiced on an old spinster which he kept up in his attic. Bach died from 1750 to the present. Bach was the most famous composer in the world and so was Handel. Handel was half German, half Italian, and half English. He was very large.

Beethoven wrote music even though he was deaf. He was so deaf that he wrote loud music and became the father of rock and roll. He took long walks in the forest even when everyone was calling for him. Beethoven expired in 1827 and later died for this.

The nineteenth century was a time of a great many thoughts and inventions. People stopped reproducing by hand and started reproducing by machine. The invention of the steamboat caused a network of rivers to spring up.

Cyrus McCormick invented the McCormick raper, which did the work of a hundred men. Louis Pasteur discovered a cure for rabbits, but I don't know why.

Karl Marx was one of the Marx Brothers. The other three were in the movies. Karl made speeches and started revolutions. Someone in the family had to have a job, I guess.

The problem with thinking it is only cheating if you get caught, is that it is a fallacy. Wether or not one gets caught, cheating is cheating. It corrupts ones integrity, and devalues ones honor.

I always taught my boys to be honest, for their own good.
I would be embarrassed to cheat in front of my wife or family, even though I got away with it. Would they then wonder if I cheat alot? Would their trust in me diminish? Would they then accept that cheating is no big deal?

When one cheats, and is not caught, it is a slippery slope. The cheating gets bigger, more brazen, then one DOES get caught. That last cheat might be a big deal, born of an attitude that it is only cheating if one is caught.

Every day is a new opportunity to be a beter person than the day before. To do the right thing instead of cheating might be a little bit harder, but it is more fulfilling, it will make you feel better.

That is the rub, right there. If one cheats, one is caught every time, by oneself.

Dishonesty diminishes ones honor and integrity. Being honest builds integrity and honor, and those around such a person can truly trust in them. Trust and honesty are the foundations of long and lasting interpersonal relationships.

I used this quote on my college graduation invitations. I like this quote because I feel like it's an anthem for anybody who knows that life doesn't hand stuff to you and if you ever want to get anything done, you have to do it yourself. I entered college as a financially unstable (poor) hick from the sticks, but I made it through with grant money for good grades, a little federal financial aid, and some loan money. I feel like I've worked hard for everything I have today.

Junior in HighSchool. French class. I took it voluntarily. Had a French class back in Jeffco, so I was ready. "Teach" got rid of all of the Sophomore students with Long Hair whose Mommy's had enrolled 'em. They all wanted to go. I was there to learn. Teach could see no difference , 'tween them and me. I was just another "Freak". I aced every assignment, aced every test. Everyone in my family spoke French, and I was not gonna let her Stereotype of me stop me from learning more. I became her nemesis, and was probably the worst problem student she ever had. I only ditched, to go to the keggers, on days there would be no test. Though I loved to sing, I refused to sing for her. She would stop the entire class, walk to my desk, and then demand that I sing alone. Dorme vous this, witch! It was a long year, 5th hour after lunch, 1974-75. The final semester rolls around. Oh, did I mention, the Teach was all gimped up and had these funky thin legs that she had to kinda swing to walk on? I never held that against her, untill she pushed me to the wall. Last day of class, freedom for the 16 year old longhaired dude. I had earned a B, easy. Teach handed out critique forms. "Go ahead, fill 'em out" she said. "I will never know who wrote what. Help me be a better teacher! I will not recognize your handwriting! Tell me what you think of me." When I heard that, I knew there was only one thing to write.

I thought long and hard about it. The twins handed theirs in. So did Jo Anne Conners. Everybody was almost done. I knew damn well she would know what I wrote. I earned a B. Report card showed up begining of summer, I got a C.
