Was Darrent gang affiiated? I see him making signs that look like he was Denver Lane Blood. This is just speculationm of course. I mean why use gang hand signs if you are not affliated or sponsoring such a group?

That could be the loser sign as well.
He has stated in interviews that as a kid he had friends that were in gangs but he was never involved. At 17 he said he found religion and never looked back.
I have no reason to doubt him.

Darrent's mother emphatically stated that Darrent was not affiliated in gangs. I believe that is true. Yesterday they showed all he had done in the Denver area for disadvantaged children - visiting, I believe, the Boys Clubs (hope that is the proper name), in different locations. One club they showed had the Darrent William's room. I can't believe he would do this, and belong to a gang.

That photo was taken at party in Houston last offseason for Darrent's record label Ryno Entertainment. There is no way it is gang affiliated.

I have to agree. There is no reason to doubt DWill or his mother.

Could we possibly leave the rumors as just that...rumors. It's been stated EMPHATICALLY that he is not and has never been in a gang. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a few punks that hide behind a gun.

THANK YOU!
Just becuase someone was killed by gang members it does not mean they are part of a gang.

If we're going by pictures off people's MySpace accounts...half the girls on there with the stupid sideways peace sign could be mistaken for gangsters. :brick: The whole thing just pisses me off. Don't come down on the victim, when it was a chicken.... hiding behind tinted windows and a gun.
Also...there are plenty of previous gang members who have reformed their lives and gone on to help their communities. Take a look at Leon Kelly. Take a look at the gang leader who spent his later years trying to right his wrongs. This was depicted in a movie with Jamie Fox, he was later executed for his crimes.
I just don't like Darrent being lumped into the term Gangster because he was killed in the manner he was killed in.

I totally agree, and I don't know why people feel they even need to start threads like this in the first place.
I feel like I am spending my time reading thread/posts and trying to stomp out a little fire before it turns into a big fire

i don't think Darrent was a member of a gang but it could be that someone with his rap label or someone in his entourage could possibly be affiliated with the Bloods and that's not saying anything bad about Darrent, it's just reality. The people in those MySpace pics on Darrent's website may be making a hand sign that looks like Bloods but they are dressed in blue which doesn't compute because Crips wear blue, not Bloods.
It's something that most of us fans like myself are probably quite naive about but I'm sure the police will talk to whoever was with Darrent that night and come up with some answers.

I just don't understand a man that good would lower himself to run with the "gang look".
On top of that own a record label where you will definitely be exposed to gang elements.
Outreach maybe?

gang looks and music are everywhere in our culture, we on the outside just don't see it that way. Snoop Dogg is a Crip and he has more commercial exposure than just about anyone I can think of - doesn't the guy have cell phone and mint ads? The media sells gang culture in clothes, music, movies but they don't stop to think of the consequences. To the suburban teenager listening to his 50 Cent (Blood affiliated I think) and Snoop Dogg they don't have any idea about the deeper implications. Gangsta culture sells, it makes money so it's exploited which is just rather sad when you stop to think about the fact that people die every day because of gangs. See http://www.therev.org/ for more insight but it's something that most of us fans, myself included, know very little about. But gangs ruin lives of young men and women in our cities every day.

He was never part of actual gang, but he did hang out with Crip members back in Texas while growing up.
It was stated in an interview with him on denverpost sometime back.
It's a problem all of us young black men have to face growing up. You have to stay away from that culture, but it's so hard to do when the people around you are calling you down at every chance they get.
Like Darrent, I'm in no gang and for a long time I thought members of some of the Blood sets were my friends until one day I realised they care for no one other than their own self.

Yes, earlier in Darrent's life he did hang out with gang members, but thru his mother and a minister he turned his life around. And I don't feel that this is something that young black men have to face. There are also white gang members. There is peer pressure on all races in regards to gangs, drugs, etc. Everyone has a choice.

Of course everyone faces some form of peer pressure growing up, but it's double the amount if you are black. Why? Because black people are looked at in alot of views as the lower race. A race in the ghetto, acting ghetto, eating ghetto, using ghetto language, etc.
And I don't know about any white gangs other than the Italian Mafia, whichever way you might want to look at that. White kids don't grow up thinking they have to be part of a cliq or a gang to fit into life as a white person.
Black people are stereotyped into the role of thugs, gangstas and ghetto rats from the very moment someone has that chance. That's just the way it is. I'm not going to get into a debate here between black and white gangs, but there's a big difference.
Why do you think the NBA has such a black eye? A big part of the league is black and acts what white people look at as "ghetto" by having the braids, tats, baggy shorts, etc. Blacks are wrongly stereotyped and that starts from birth.
this thread is too political about gangs....
where do I complain

It could be that Darrent nor anyone in his crew or rap group had any gang affiliation.
This kind of speculation can tarnish a young man's image. If it is true, then it will surface w/ proof and facts. But speculation of being in a gang because he makes a sign isn't fair to Darrent if not true.
Proof. Give/show/bring proof.
I hope the thread gets closed. Putting "Darrent and Gangs" in title thread.

A news story about Darrent and the Boys and Girls Club:
DENVER – He didn’t do it for the attention. He didn’t do it for the cameras. Workers at the Boys and Girls Club said Darrent Williams did it for the kids.
Rest of article can be found @:

I grew up in North Denver. I didn't see any gangsters volunteer.
D-Will wanted to show the kids that there are different avenues than the "thug way."

Actions speak louder than words. When you potray that image it erases "The Gang Way" you are trying to help youth beware of or get out of.
