As a fan of football, it does seem like a crazy thing and a loss of a good receiver....However, I have never seem him play baseball, and I know that as far as a career goes, he can probably go a lot longer in baseball. If he is good, he can make cash and still walk without pain in his retirement years. If I was equally good at both, and since money playing any proffessional sport can be lucrative if your decent, I dont think is to ridiculous of a decision. I would like to see him play football, and it seems harder to get to the pro level, since you have to start in the minors, but it just doesnt seem to far fetched of a decision to me. :coffee:

You really can't blame him...8 million in guaranteed money, no matter what?

Baseball players make way more money. That's probably why he decided to do it. NTM, there's usually a lot less stress on the body and even if you're a pitcher you get plenty of rest (only start 1/4 or 5 games) and there's always a reliever to spell you if you get tired.

That is great news for us Cub fans. I haven't seen him play baseball yet but I hear that he has raw talent and I think throws in the mid to high 90's.

He could have received more in guaranteed money playing football with a year or two of consistant and great play.
I personally think that it is one of the stupidest decisions mainly because he said himself he only has two pitches. Withg that and the fact that he'll have to work his way up through AA ball makes me think that he'll try to come back to football in about three years and no-one is going to want to give him big money that he could probably get now.

Would be nice if he could play two sports like ol' Bo Jackson.
Bo knows sports.

I would be surprised if anyone found this as a shock. I knew this was coming at the beginning of the season.
1)he's already expressed numerous of times that his heart is in baseball, and not football.
2)an average MLB pitcher gets payed more then a starting WR, so that should end any speculation about money.
3)it it's still about money, remember baseball contracts are ridiculously overpriced, AND they're guaranteed.
4)Guaranteed money in a sport that's a lot easier on your body >>>> then non-guaranteed money in a sport that repeatedly spits out retired players with broken body's.
Samardzija made the right decision, especially considering he favors baseball to football.
.....waiting for the posters to come in and say we should waste a draft pick on him anyways "just in case"....

Not a chance.
Considering there is no ceiling on baseball contracts, and team's don't have to work around a salary cap, and average pitchers get payed more then starting wr's, and entire contracts in baseball are guaranteed as opposed to football, Jeff will likely make more with his first contract or 2 in baseball then he will total in football, even if he is an all pro.
From a financial standpoint it's a complete no brainer. He's been considered as an elite prospect with his tools and physical ability, and the market in MLB for an average starting pitcher is ridiculous. It shouldn't take him long to work his way up if he is indeed the pitcher that baseball scouts think he is.

He can make 4x the money for 2x the length of career and be able to walk when hes done.
Sounds pretty smart to me.

I have no idea why this post annoyed me so much, but it just did. It just came across as pompous. I apologize in advance if I offend you.

If it's ALL about the money, was does it matter if his heart is in baseball?

Highest to lowest paid of the four major professional sports industries in America.
Major League Baseball
National Basketball Association
National Hockey League
National Football League
The popularity of these sports does not follow this order, however. Good call Jeff.
Now watch, Tom Zibikowski will become a pro Boxer.

I thought all the stupid posts were about how Tedd Ginn Jr. would be the smart pick, and the answer...

You can't play football at a high level in the NFL, if your heart isn't in it. He made the right choice for himself. If I were a NFL GM, I wouldn't have taken him unless he vowed to give up baseball, certainly not in the first round. He isn't at the same level Bo Jackson was at. :smug:

he'll end up in football in a few years just for the simple fact that teh cubs ruin great pitching talent so he will hurt his shoulder wont be able to throw anymore and become a decent wr for someone
i say we draft him in the 7th round on 2009

I read that he signed for $10 million- guaranteed. :salute: Financially, he is set for life if he invests it wisely. He won't be coming back to football in my opinion.

Why is it stupid? He enjoys baseball more, he will have less injuries, aches and pains, he is receiving good money and he will live longer!!!!!
Mariano Rivera has only one pitch! Randy Johnson has only two pitches, so the two pitch theory is squat. You can make it in the bigs with only two pitches.
In the past there have been pitchers who made it with only one pitch- the knuckle ball.

I have no idea why this post annoyed me so much, but it just did. It just came across as pompous. I apologize in advance if I offend you.
Pompous? It's a fact. There is no arguing with facts. Jeff has stated numerous of times he loves baseball, and he likes football. His heart lies in baseball. If someone wants to argue money, don't. Baseball players make more money then football players.
There's nothing "pompous" about facts.
Congrats Nostradamus! All bow down. You KNEW this was coming...or you suspected it?
Here, let me find you a quote. Or 3.

There's nothing "pompous" or arrogant in the least about it. Samardzija has been talking baseball ever since he committed to Notre Dame. what difference does it make if I "knew" about it, or "suspected" it. The comments I've made about Samardzija in the past is always IMHO. Considering this is a message board, and if there is no link opsted, the majority of the comments everyone makes is IMHO.
If it's ALL about the money, was does it matter if his heart is in baseball?
It isn't all about the money. And apparently it isn't with Jeff. I wanted to save the people that would argue "money" a post or too. That's what the "if" is for.
