Do we have any surfers on the board?

Would any of you surf this wave?

And what the heck happened to the surfer?

I actually started a thread a LONG time ago with this same video, but I think I deleted it.

The rider is Laird Hamilton and this was taken off of JAWS beach, Maui.

The waves are so big it's not possible to paddle into them, you need to be towed in by jet ski.

Depending where you wipe out, it's possible to be held underwater for several minutes.

If anyone here thinks they can do this they either
1) Have never ridden before and don't have the slightest clue
2) Are stupid and the type of people that makes lifeguard's jobs tougher.

Waves are smaller during the summer.

I learned on the North Shore (Oahu), I can't remember the name of the beach but it's great for beginners. Waves will probably be just big enough to give you a long workable ride. Probably about a foot or two.

I believe theres a place in Haliewa that offers lessons. They'll give you a board that'll be easy to stand on.

I'm going to Oahu! I am so excited...but before I even go in the water I have to make myself believe there are no fish in there.

Right on. Yea Oahu has a ton of stuff to do. I lived there a long time ago and spent a lot of time in the water (along with anyone who has lived there), you'll be fine.

If you do decide on surfing, I do recommend lessons or someone who has been out there. There are some pretty nasty currents out there, even when the waves are small.

Hope you have fun on your trip

Thanks for the advice!

I am excited to go...leaving on June 10th! And I really want to find a helicopter tour even if its pricey! :D
