Oh yes Gladiator is awsome...
yeah. and people are like: "why cuz it's got blood and action?"
and i'm like: "sit down and let me teach you something about film-making genius, first of all, that's not even what makes the movie. to start, and this is a simple one....we'll go with the actors who made it amazing. the brilliant performance by pheonix alone is awesome. then we have the actual story, which is unique and interesting, and intertwines a little bit of actual roman history. then we'll move on to the incredibly brilliant cinematography...which i still cannot get enough of. and then finally we have the most brilliant motion picture score anyone will ever hear. composed by hans zimmer, and featuring lisa gerrard. just simply incredible. now, are there any other dumb questions you would like to ask me about why i think Gladiator is the best movie ever? as if the Best Picture and Actor Oscar wasn't a good enough indication for you."
hahaha. well, you can see the point. it's one helluva movie ;)

Leon: The Professional
Blue Velvet
Clerks, Clerks II, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
True Romance
Hannibal Lecter Series (minus Hannibal Rising; no interest in it)

Whoa....whoa....WHOA! First of all they weren't trying to be historically accurate...so I don't see why people are up in arms about that. That's not even the point of Gladiator and it's not about Marcus Aurelius or Commodus...it's about a fictional character.
And second....you say that Gladiator is horrible and then turn around and tell me that Alexander is on your favorites list and is historically accurate? ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Alexander was the worst excuse for film making I have ever seen. Horrible casting, NOT accurate battle sequences... there was nothing about Alexander that was accurate or "great". And the fact that it came from Oliver Stone makes it even worse. You'd expect a guy like him to produce a really well done piece of cinema...but then you get crap.
Wow. I can't believe I just read that...

Commdus was actually historically accurate. He was known to enter the Gladitorial arenas to fight (Granted, wounded and crippled glads) and Marcus Aurelius WAS the last emperor to expand Roman territory before the relapse AND he was known as the "Philospher"
And, yes, Maximus is a cartoon character. He's honor, revenge, justice...everything. He's the good guy.
And I owe you a CP, RealBronco. Gladiator is a pinnacle of film making.

No, Commodus was not accurately portrayed. Yes, he did take part in Gladiatorial games dressed as Hercules. He firmly believed that he was a reincarnated Hercules. He even went before the Senate dressed as Hercules demanding for them to recognize as Hercules reborn. Not only that, but he was what would today be called a Pedophile. He had wanton sexual relations with boys and girls that were quite underage. Thank the gods that his wife and some senators bribed his wrestling friend (also his homosexual lover) to strangle him in his bath.
Yea, Marcus Aurelius was a philosopher. I have many of his writings with me in my private library. I'm not disputing that. What I am disputing is the way in which he was portrayed. He was portrayed as physically weak and a non-factor on the field of battle. You did not see him actively take part in any of those battles in the movie. He did not shy away from battles. He led his troops into battle as Roman Emperors were supposed to. He led his troops into Germania. Not the other way around (as depicted in the movie) where he was merely a figurehead that followed in the footsteps of his soldiers.

So, let me get this straight.
You are saying that Alexander was complete and total fiction. I should have known that Homophobia was this rampant. Alexander WAS a homosexual. He had a horse named Berseus that he loved a great deal and had since he was a lad. He did fight a vastly superior Persian army. He did pursue the assassins of Darius to the ends of the world. You don't want to know their fate - because I KNOW their fate. I've mentioned their punishment before... As he expanded his empire he named many, many places Alexandria. He did outlive his homosexual lover. He did have plans to expand his empire farther into the Mediterranean. I find it extremely funny that you embrace a film of complete and total BS fiction like 'Gladiator' and ignore a very accurate portrayal of the life of Alexander. But, then again, I should have known that the educational system of the United States was this lagging.
Oh, and BTW. Alexander isn't one of my favorite movies :) LOL. I just put it up there to stir the pot and bring about this conversation. Because I wanted to complain about the educational system.

I never said he wasn't a real person. And I never stated anything about him being homosexual. I really don't care whether he was or wasn't. What I'm saying is that Oliver Stone's "Alexander" was a piece of crap. I was stoked that there was going to be a film about Alexander the Great, but then I watched it (and walked out of it) after I realized that the movie didn't do him justice whatsoever. First off, the casting was horrible as I already stated. I love how they got an Irishman to play him. And Angelina Jolie? Are you kidding me? That was rediculous. And she never even aged. Where was the makeup with that? The only good portrayal was Val Kilmer because Val Kilmer is a badass.
I know Alexander single handedly conquered the majority of the middle east. He's also mentioned in the Bible. I bet you didn't know that. He's the only one that was ever successful in razing the capital city of Tyre. The Babylonians couldn't even do it.
I'm just saying that Oliver Stone ruined a great historical figure and didn't depict anything the way it happened. The battle scenes were rediculous.
And if you wanted to talk about the educational system that is another thread entirely and belongs in the "Anything But Football" Forum, not "Entertainment"
And you still seem to think that Gladiator was trying to be an historical film when it clearly was just Ridley Scott's personal vision. And even still, with loosely basing characters off of real people he did a good job. And sure emperors were known to lead their troops into battle but you must have missed the part where when Gladiator starts, the Marcus Aurelius of this film was already practically on his death bed but was still able to march out to the field and watch over his troops.
Pheonix's portrayal of Commodus wasn't far off from the real one. He was a pervert, psychotic, murderer who found it entertaining to fight in the arena. But of course if you're going to mix the fictional portrayal up with the real versions then I guess Stone knew exactly what Alexander looked like. He must have had terrible looking blonde hair with Irish blood right?
The difference between motion pictures and history is that motion pictures are fake and never accurate portrayals of history.
So as far as film making goes, Gladiator is still the best in this topic. Alexander belongs on the cutting room floor. There was nothing ingenius about Alexander. Not the score, not the acting, nor directing, or even the cinematography. To even think about comparing Oscar winning material with such autrocity is rediculous.

Hell no he didn't.
I highly doubt the Roman Soldiers wore quasi-futuristic clothes. Ridley Scott did a very crappy job with portraying those historic characters. The film was a piece of crap that I would never and will never own. Extremely inaccurate portrayals of the Romans. I sure didn't see Commodus saying he was Hercules reborn. I sure didn't see Commodus show up at the Senate dressed in Lions skins. I didn't see any of that. I saw an extremely inaccurate movie. I saw a movie in which the Senate gained control of Rome. Sorry, that's not the Roman Republic. It's the Roman Empire. Following Commodus' death it was a period known as the Year of the Five Emperors in which Four seperate Emperors died after extremely short reign. Plus Commodus himself wore a mustache and beard.
