Meanwhile, a source close to the situation, said the Broncos are intent on keeping Atlanta defensive end Patrick Kerney in Denver until he signs a contract. Kerney is scheduled to fly to Seattle on Saturday to meet with the Seahawks. Kerney is one of the top free agents on the market and would start for Denver at left defensive end.
Kerney has a close relationship with new Denver defensive line coach Bill Johnson, who spent the past six years with the Falcons.
If this has already been posted I'm sorry, but I think it shows that Shanahan is serious about making an impact in FA this year.
I wonder if he will seek a DL via the draft now if he manages to convince Kerney to sign?
The Broncos still need a DT, but I doubt they take one in round one, unless he manages to trade up and get Okoye (but that would require getting into the top 10).
I can't imagine how this is going to fit under the salary cap either.

Haha, sounds like it's forced :goofy: you never know with Shanny...a bit of chloroform and a lobotomy later we may have him on the roster for the league minimum
Tbh I'm not sold on Kerney. I'd love us to pick up a couple of DEs and a DT or two...but healthy ones. Hoping we stockpile on D linemen (including a first day pick or two)

I still think you would have to go DE in the first round unless we trade/sign another DE I don't think you can pass on other great pass rushsers such as Jarvis Moss. I just hope we don't give him too much and cripple ourselves.

I cannot express how excited I will be if we get him, and the deal is finalized before he can go anywhere else. I do not know how he and Graham both fit under the cap until Rod, Warren, and maybe a few others restructure... but if they can manage to do it, more power to them :salute:

The problem is that the Broncos have THREE RDEs on the roster now, Dumervil who they acquired last year and is a good promising young player, Ekuban, who had 7 sacks, and Lang, who played LDE (badly because he's too light -258 lbs. is not your proto-typical power end and it showed).
Shanahan is determined to try and get a veteran to replace Courtney "Always On IR" Brown, but Kerney will cost an arm and a leg, and a kidney and a liver, and . . .
You have to love Shanahan's attitude though! Last year Andre Carter was snatched from under him when the Redskins wouldn't let him leave without a contract. Carter cancelled his scheduled trip to Denver. Now Shanny is tring to pull the same thing on the Seahawks!
Let's keep our fingers crossed that Kerney winds up in Denver. He'd be a good power-end and would step right in and be strong against the run. He also has some pass-rushing skills, so he's a BIG step up over Brown.

Obviously, if they're working on Kerney too, no one outside of Dove Valley had an accurate grasp on the money situation.
I'd prefer to go cheaper/younger, but hey, he's an upgrade.

i think if we sign kerney, that there still will be good talent at DL in the later rounds, 2nd-4th rounds. i think shanny really wants 2 go elsewhere with our 1st round pick. :smug:

Ek plays LE too. He'd be a fine no. 2 on that side.

shannys got the inside scoop on something. he must know a loop in the cap or he may have talked with smiths agent to get him to restructure a reasonable deal. warrens deal may have saved us this year as well.

Ahh, Shanny probably would just call Kerney's Mom and did a little "behind the scenes" persuasion. No red-blooded American boy like Kerney can refuse his Momma... :D

...Or maybe Warren's restructure cleared up a lot more space than we imagined. It's also possible that Rod restructured and we just haven't heard about it yet. denverbroncos.com is lagging pretty bad on the headlines right now, wasting print on articles on Dominic Foxworth's teammate from Maryland and mentioning nothing about the Bly trade or the failed Plummer trade.

Rod Smith earned $5M in 2006, and Warren was payed $2M. Even if you add together and get $7 million in savings (not true, but just pretend), that still wouldn't equal the amount necesssary to sign Kerney, unless his salary were were very low and his signing bonus was quite high (perhaps $15-20 million) and his contract were long (so that the total impact wouldn't push Denver over the cap.
They'd probably need at least around $5 million or so in cap space -- assuming his salary was around $1 M and his bonus was $20 million divided over 5 years) and I can't understand how they're doing it with signing Graham as well supposedly looking at signing Willis McGehee.

Thanks Cugel. I'm in no way a "cap guy" I was just guessing. :heh:

I'm not either really. I understand how the cap works in general, because that part's easy, but I don't spend my day keeping tabs on the details of Broncos salaries. There are people on these boards who seem to know these things, like how many years Rod Smith has left on his contract and how big his signing bonus was, and what his cap numbers are for 2007, etc.
Makes the world go round I guess. :coffee:

this is one i wish not to happen....kearny is not a premier pass rusher...good...but thats it...he just happens to be the best in this off season
not to mention his cap number would be hard to do...i would much rather get a dt and de in the draft ...much cheaper

Have they meet yet? Just wondering if they had meet with him today, since they were meeting with grahmn, trading Plummer and trading for Willis today?

Shoot if we get Kerney and McGahee rumors are true then we'd almost have to target DT in the first round. Or safety or WR, but those don't seem nearly so important as DT.

According to Jeremy Green, Denver is trying to keep him there and make him get a contract done, but his agent continues to get enormous offers from other teams.

The Broncos aren't getting Kerney to rush the passer. He's being targeted to play LDE and replace Courtney Brown.
That is the 2nd biggest need on the team right now after getting a starting DT to replace Mike Myers.
Brown is always injured so you can't count on him. He might even retire. In any case he hasn't played a full season since his rookie year in 2001.
Kerney would fill a gaping void on the DL.
This past year Denver was forced to use Kenard Lang at LDE. That didn't work at all well. He weighs 258 lbs -- more the size of a big LB not a DE! Needless to say, the Broncos run defense suffered as a result.
That's why Shanahan wants Kerney so bad.
As for drafting a rookie DE they should do that anyway whether they sign Kerney or not. But, a rookie can't be counted on to win a SB! It takes a couple of years before he's really ready to start. Hopefully Dumervil will be ready to start this year, but who knows? He's rather small to be the every-down RDE. Still he has more talent than Ekuban (but not greater size).
Last year, Denver tried to get John Abraham and Andre Carter only to be out-bid. It could happen again.
Meanwhile who do you start? Unless Denver gets a decent FA DL they will start the year with Lang at LDE again and get pounded again.
NO improvement. :coffee:
