I watched Flags of our Fathers last night (I had already seen it in theaters) and relized why I liked this movie when so many others did not. That reason is that I had already read the book. It really is a great book and the moment I read it, I knew that I wanted to see it in a movie. But I also was not sure how to make a movie out of it. The story is very big, and (like most true stories) does not fit easily into three acts complete with turning points and a climax. It is also nearly impossible to juggle all of the characters.
The film does a decent job of providing all the important themes if not all the important individuals. Still if you have not read the book, it would be really hard to follow. So I encourage anyone who has a passion for history to read the book, then see the film.
The other reason I loved this movie is because I am a United States Marine (retired) and it is the first movie that I have ever seen in which the Marines acted like Marines. I am so tired of us being portrayed as psychos, bigots, wife beaters, etc. It is nice to finally see a film that respects our point of view instead of brainless stereotypes about us.
