No I don't mean the guy that keeps starting Jay Cutler threads.
No I don't mean the poster named Cheesy and the "I am leaving or staying" drama.
I mean those little critters that fly in your face. Bite you on the leg, invade your picnic or just plain bother you. The rodents that won't go away.
Ok those of you in Florida. I know how the mosquito there is considered the state bird. Florida wins the prize on biggest and most bugs IMO.
Ok those of you in Texas. I know that the beetles can be mistaken as Armadillos.
Ok those of you in New York City can saddle and ride rats.
Ok those of you in Las Vegas can share dinner with roaches.
We all have our phases of pests where we live, so I want to know what is Bugging you right now?
We had a discussion last weekend about where are the mosquitos? Was a little surprised that we haven't seen them. Well....they were all born yesterday.
I went outside about 10pm last night after the porch lights were on to let the dog out and BAM!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!! THOUSANDS of them were hovering around the porch lights. The 30 seconds it took me to go out and get the dog off her chain left me with 7 bites just on my right leg. They were swarming. And the West Nile has hit here so I freaked.
We also have these little insects that I have never seen before moving to Utah. They look like that Sinclair Dinosaur only on a 1/4" scale that fly around and bite. I have no idea what these suckers are. Little jerks. They get down my shirt in an instant when watering the bushes.
We are expected the wasps which are starting to appear. They build nests all over our roof. I already have 4 cans of those jet spray cans that shoot 25' and kill the nest. I go through this every year here.
But one thing we have noticed is no flies. I'm sure the day is coming.
What is bugging you right now???
On a positive note about insects and critters, check this guy out. We get these big ass beautiful moths that never cease to amaze us. The size alone are awesome but their color schemes are about as unique as a sunset could be.
I came home today to find this dude sitting on a tiki torch right near the front door. I was shocked the cats didn't nab him. I did move him to my neighbors tree so those ass cats didn't get him.
Take a look:
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/4541/dsc00115xb4.jpg
I tried to move him on to my finger and he fell on the ground. Here is his wings open. The picture really doesn't show the vividness of the color he had. He was a brick red and those eyes on his wings were a sky blue. Look at his body alone and go with his scheme and it almost looks like a scorpion.
http://img469.imageshack.us/img469/1053/dsc00117ku2.jpg
I laid my full size bic lighter on the ground next to him so you could get an idea about how big he is. No this is not one of those miniature bics. We get these guys all the time and this one is the first one that had such a deep red color.

Wasps are bad here.
My husband gets bitten by mosquitos all the time, I get bitten by the flies (which are worse to me).
Hey ---- are you guys seeing honey bees at all this year? I have not seen ONE bee this year, only wasps. (I don't mean bumble bees either, honey bees). that's worrisome to me.
Utah - are you seeing any of those killer bees? Expect to? Who here is seeing killer bees and where are they expected to be next year, farther north?

WOW...those are some great pics!!! He is amazing!!! I'm pretty jealous as we don't have pretty moths really!!!
Mosquitos...check, we had three birds in the area sent in to be checked for West Nile, and our first 2 human cases reported this past week, so good times!!! Because I live on a farm...flies of millions, not a worry, and we have ants like crazy this year!!!
I've also noticed the wasps and yellow jackets are all sorts of busy and plentyful this year which makes me happy as I'm allergic!!!
HW...there is a honey bee farmer that lives a couple of miles from us...but he said things are in horrible shape for the bees this year!!! I have seen them, but...

No that is not a butterfly. LOL
The body alone on this guy is about 1/2" around. You wait I will have more pics of others as the summer goes by.
He had actually flown back over to our yard. I went over to pick him up and put him on my well faucet post.....and he is still there.
Like I said, we get these big ass moths all the time. I was going to start a thread about them last year but never did.

Ants will just get worse too in the next month or two. I'm going to spray ALL OVER my yard and around my house for those carpenter ants. I've learned my lesson well (isn't that a song? ).
Well, really - the bees are extremely important to our environment and I'm wondering just how worried your farmer friend is about the bad bee season.
You know what bugs me? People that are bugged by this thread.--Jazz. :D

We have massive spiders too. But these are the little guys that build their webs on the front porch.
I usually spray my front porch with the hose to get rid of them, but this time of year I leave them alone. You should have seen the spiders nabbing those mosquitos in their webs last night.
We keep our inside sprayed to keep all these critters outside. So the guys that stay outside, we leave them alone.

About two weeks ago, we were invaded with crickets. These were not normal crickets.
We still have the black dudes we all know and hear chirping.
These crickets were the same looking creatures but their bodies were smaller. Here's the kicker. These little asses have wings and fly.
They were all over the place and when you approached them, they would take off in flight in all directions hitting you like those stupid June bugs would.
Now THAT was weird because I have NEVER seen these before. They are like mutant, nuclear infested, cross breading God knows what.

Yes, Spritz! Spray them and they freeze! Gives you time to kill them.
We ocassionally see centipedes - which are highly intelligent. Want a bug that gives you the creeps - meet up with one of these fellas. They are fast and their bite is toxic.
Our other problem - on the rise - is Brown Recluse (Fiddleback) spider. These are also toxic. Lost a friend last year to complications from a brown recluse bite (heart, amputation of the leg, and so much more). These are found under the leaves of rubharb (in gardens) and in closets (they like dry spots). They are only about the size of a dime, so they are not easy to identify. What made me think of these was your jumping spiders comment, buck, as these are aggressive spiders that jump and attack.

I just posted a comment about them. We had a friend in Colorado that had one in his boot. He put his boots on and got bit. He didn't realize what had bit him and blew it off for a week. He knew he was bit by something.

They are a very under-stated spider. No doubt about it. They are hard to see and before I put a pair of shoes on, I will turn them over and tap them, just to make sure nothing is inside, waiting. Sorry about your friend.
The brown recluse bite literally eats through the skin to the bone. The first 12 hours or so after bitten is imparitive to be treated. The sign of a bite? A large blister, about the size of a quarter. The key is getting it treated early, in blister stage. And then....it's painful.

Lost a friend last year to complications from a brown recluse bite (heart, amputation of the leg, and so much more). These are found under the leaves of rubharb (in gardens) and in closets (they like dry spots). They are only about the size of a dime, so they are not easy to identify. What made me think of these was your jumping spiders comment, buck, as these are aggressive spiders that jump and attack.
yes, to all of the above, HW! I don't even know if the "fiddler back" is a web spider, but they sure do pack a punch.
Now, jumping spiders, they actually see you. I like that in a spider.

bite her on the leg...she kicked her leg up and the thing landed on her
chest...
OMG! Thanks God she kicked it away.
I just got woke up the other night by one of those flying crickets. 3am on a work night kinda thing....
... I wake up to this tickling feeling on my neck. Since the wife is gone right now, it's like ***!!!!!!! Reached back and it was one of those flying crickets I was just talking about.
I grab the thing, open my hand and it flew away! I was like OMG***! Chased that B'strd down and smashed him fierce like. I couldn't sleep the rest of the night.

Yes.. exactly. The poison the spider left ate his skin away before he went to the doctor. Stubborn one. He didn't see a doc for at least a week. By then it was too late. His leg, and yes I saw it, was like some freak show in a horror movie.
If I get a bite the size of a quarter, I would freak out!

You do? Please explain.
Well, being hunters like us, they have excellent eyesight. And they are actually aware of you. They avoid you, like we avoid them.
The other day, my wife tried to capture one, who was hiding behind the faucet of her central sink. She would make a move, he would make a counter move. It all ended well, as he was distracted by a plastic cup, to which he was knocked into, then safely transported to the outside yard.
The point is, he was aware of her, as much as she was aware of him. Her head would move to the right of the faucet, he would dodge to the left, trying to stay out of eye contact.
This prompted me to look up "jumping spiders" (aka "hunting spiders") on the web (npi)...
found a very interesting article--with dramatic pics--on just how their eyes work.

We have ants, spiders and mosquitoes.
Thankfully, we do not have cockroaches in our house. I never saw one until we moved to MD. When we lived on Ft. Meade, it was like a swarm coming out of the walls (we 'inherited' them from the previous occupant). I had one go up my pant leg once. I was out of those pants so fast! I used to have nightmares about them.

Las Vegas has them everywhere. You could saddle some of these little asses and you had to spray for them constantly.

I did find this comment:
This looks very much like a Camel spider, but are found in the southwest desert areas of the USA. Camel spiders are found in the middle east. There was a photo on the net a year or two back that showed two Camel spiders latched by their jaws and held in the air by a sodlier's hand on one of the hind legs. They are HUGE! However, the Solpug is venomus. It's bite is simular to a scorpion sting. I speak from experience, not pride. Activated charcoal and/or Benadryl usually work well to counter the effects of either.

If they're really itchy, something with hydrocortisone can help. What I usually do is take one of my allergy tablets (Claritan, and I forget what the other one is. The non-drowsy kind). After all, it is an allergic reaction.

I also heard/read that catnip oil (you can buy it at a pet store like Petsmart) is 100 times better at keeping mosquitoes away - but its only been used on yards and stuff - not recommended for people yet - they havent tested it - but they say you can spray it arund your porch or yard or whatever and it keeps those pesky skeeters away - I havent tried it - I dont sit out much at night - its usually to muggy here and with all the rain we've had - its made it skeeter heaven here

I also heard/read that catnip oil (you can buy it at a pet store like Petsmart) is 100 times better at keeping mosquitoes away - but its only been used on yards and stuff - not recommended for people yet - they havent tested it - but they say you can spray it arund your porch or yard or whatever and it keeps those pesky skeeters away - I havent tried it - I dont sit out much at night - its usually to muggy here and with all the rain we've had - its made it skeeter heaven here
Might keep the bugs away, but wouldn't you have a yard full of cats?
Or, it's not the oil that the cats like in catnip?

No bees and it's a big issue as of right now.

It's the wasps with us right now. They are making their little (and sometimes huge) honeycombs all over. I have several of the jet spray killer that shoots 25' and keep that stuff stocked in the garage since the little jerks keep rebuilding.
Thanks again MD for finding this. :salute:

We get these too. Ours are a little meatier and they have stripes on their butts. Haven't seen a big one recently but the little ones meet the bottom of my shoe in the garage all the time.
I hate them. They creep me out. And they are FAST!!!
The ones I get here the most are wolf spiders. Those things get to the size of my palm and can move so quick. It usually takes a few swipes to actually hit it and kill it. We also have these tree spiders (that is what someone told me they where, not sure of their real name) that I hardly ever see inside and they get bigger than the wolf spiders by quite a bit. I don't have a problem with them though since they are never in the house. We get at least 1-2 nests of wolf spiders every year.

Just saw your earlier post about them. I believe there's over 1000 described species of them, and I kind of figured that our (twin) sister city would have them as well. :thumb: I think I've seen pictures of a species like the one you described.
Like I said, they don't creep me out, but I'm not going to let one crawl on me either. A few years back we caught one and threw it in to prison (a jar). We fed it continuously for days, and the voracious little thing ate just about everything we put in there and grew noticably over that period. It finally met its match with a scorpion (unknown sp. - only horny mouth parts remained - slurp... :P) which was in turn fed to a black widow (slurp), which ultimately met its own fate through a rather large yellow jacket (ouch).
Anyway, have you ever noticed how delicate they are? - Especially, for such an aggressive creature. A full foot stomp is overkill - a light kick or grazing usually rolls them up for good. I usually find them in my garage too; sometimes they get to live - sometimes they don't. If I find one in the house though... :hammer: ...if I can catch it.

About a week ago I noticed swarms of these tiny (< 0.5mm) aphid-like insects around the foundation of our house. Others in the area have experienced them too on their foundations and sidewalks. Tried taking pictures of them, but it was rather hard because they're so small and move/hop around quickly.
I've tried in vain to identify them, but I might post the best pic I have here to see if any of you amateur entomologists can identify them. ;) I've ruled out some of the common culprits (variated carpet beetle, et al).
Just this last weekend I noticed them (or a close relative) infesting the stem bases of the halogetons and tumbleweeds that I was pulling. They've since left the foundation and sidewalks. Unbelievable numbers of these little critters!!!

No, they're black (dark) with a white(ish) pattern on their backs.

A few weeks ago my mom and I were in the car, going slowly driving into our neigborhood and a beetle-like creature landed on the windshield.
Well... at first I thought it was a beetle. It was the size of a fairly sized cockroach, or some kind of rather large beetle.
But it was NOT any of these things, I am oh so certain.
This... Was a fly. It had all the looks, the eye thing going, the flicking of their limbs... It sat on the windshield high and mighty freaking me out as only a monster fly would.
Now, to add on to Florida's giant mosquitos (which aren't really that bad)
And Dragonflies that have been alive since the dinosaurs.

This one night, I get up to go to the loo, and this massive black thing skittered past my foot(thank god it didn't touch me). Good thing I was already on the loo.
I beat it to death with a scrubbing brush.
The next day, I'm getting ready to go to work. I put my jacket on, and feel something on my neck. I ripped the jacket off, and this even bigger black spider crawls out.
I screamed like a banshee, and my stepfather came running in(thinking I was mortally wounded). I made him kill it. Big gumboots rock! Even he was shocked at the size.
I think I aged 5 or 6 years with those 2 spiders.
In NZ the white-tail spider (which is small, brown, and has a white butt) causes severe reactions, but only after the first bite. If they bite you once, you're okay, but if you get bit a 2nd time, you go into anaphlaytic shock pretty quick. And sometimes you end up with necrosis(dead flesh) at the bite site.

The weta is an amazing insect, found not just in New Zealand but also in South Africa, Australia, and South America. Although not unique to New Zealand, the weta is found here in its largest forms. Here it is able to grow lengths of up to 90mm and weighs up to 70grams. The weta exists in almost every habitat that New Zealand has to offer, from the warm sandy climates of Northland to the alpine environments of the Southern Alps, displaying true diversity.
Weta is strictly a New Zealand name that derives from the Maori name of wetapunga that was given to the giant weta. Wetapunga translates roughly to "God of ugly things". Other Maori names, tokoriro and putangatanga, have been applied to the Auckland tree weta that is found throughout the northern and central parts of the North Island (Gibbs, 1998).
The wetapunga, now found only on Little Barrier Island, off the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand's North Island, once inhabited much of the upper North Island. The introduction of rats and stoats has been to the detriment of our giant weta as well as our native birds. Our giant weta now remain only on protected islands or high in the mountains where the rats cannot reach them. Some of the more agile hole-dwelling weta have beaten the odds and survived despite the predators
http://www.sanctuary.org.nz/restoration/forest/images/giant_weta.jpg
If they look familiar, they should. The giant killer bugs in Peter Jackson's King Kong were all modelled on wetas and other NZ bugs!
They don't bite or anything, but they do have a tendency to get in your shoes(if you have them on the porch), and if you put your foot in without checking the shoe, you will get your foot pretty badly cut up on their armour!

April's not even over and I'm already in full-scale war with European Paper Wasps.... again.
They're everywhere! It seems like every crack and crevice is a suitable place for a nest. The kids' outside toys seem to be one of their favorite spots... as well as, the BBQ grill, the dog house, the satellite dish, behind and inside the rain gutters, the toolbox in my truck, the door jams in the vehicles, in the recesses of water faucets... I could go on and on.
One trait that I like about them is that they're not as aggressive as the native paper wasps, but that's also a curse and one of the reasons why they're so prolific. If they're not aggressive people tend to leave them alone. Other factors contributing to their success: they're willing to nest next to other nests, and they'll re-use old/abandoned nests. Each year there seems to be more of them, and each year they seem to be in larger numbers earlier than the year before.
Sure, they're not too aggressive, but that doesn't stop them from stinging you if you accidentally grab one. And, with their increased numbers the possibility of them being in places that people frequent increases as well.
I think 5 out of the last 6 stings I've had have come from these wasps. The kids are next, I fear, but I'm going to do what I can to prevent it. Will be attempting some of the less-toxic means of controlling them, and I'll report back with my successes/failures.

Catepillars are EVERYWHERE right now. And yes, they are a bright green goo when you squash them. Red asked about it being wet and/or rainy. We haven't had any moisture for a long time here. Due to change on Wednesday. We need a good rain.
These catepillars will be our moth problem in another or month or two. :hammer:
Saturday night, I had a big 'ol moth come dive bombing at me. It hit me in the hand so hard and I had a lit cigarette that went flying. Too bad he didn't catch on fire.
The wasps are starting to show up here too MnG. I'm not sure what "species" they are but they are the yellow and black ones and these make the honeycombs on the house. I spray those things as soon as I see them forming. These wasps do happen to be aggressive. They will chase you even minding your own business.

Tanya hates these things as they tend to fly right in your face sometimes. Little jerks. And they are multiplying quickly. :hammer:
They are ugly suckers that make that clicking noise when they fly. No pics either as it is hard to catch one on camera.

But three times I had one hit me square in the face this weekend.

You are correct SS and thank you.
My family always called them "Locust" but even looking into Bible days and history of the migration, locust was indeed an infestation similare to grass hoppers that destroyed crops.
Thanks for the proper name. I googled it and with this damn dial up, not able to post what I found.

can also be known as a katydid, depending on where you're from.
No matter what their name, they are loud buggers. My house is a magnet for them when they are molting for some reason. It gets covered in their shells along the edges of the siding. Every year my boys love to go around and gather their molted shells and stick them on their shirts to scare my wife. :D
There are some strains of these that hatch only every 17 years, and when they do, they cover everything. Chicago had a hatching of these last year and you couldn't go anywhere without seeing them.

When I had an interview for a Pet store job, I was asked about how I felt about spiders/snakes etc (being from NZ we don't have snakes, and certainly no big spiders).
I said spiders are good for killing, end of story. I was honest about my revulsion for them.

Hey BroncoManiac,
Temple Valley is a town a part of Kaneohe on the Eastside of the island, Oahu. You guys in the mainland probably recognize it as Valley of the Temples because of the Buddihst temples they have up in the valley!
It's a beautiful place kinda like part country, part city. It rains a lot here today, like almost everyday! I'd probably rather live in Maui though since I'm young, and there are a lot of beautiful women living over there. You have one man here and thirty women all around him in Maui!!!:D

Don't buy cojones from WalMart, they're cheap knock-offs. You have to pay the extra to get a good pair from a brand named cojone distributor. Of course, eBay usually has some good deals, too. Don't skimp, though, or your cojones might quit working at an inopportune time.

When I got back, I was chewed out for being gone so long. When he demanded to know where I was for so long, I replied "Getting my @$$ chewed by my OTHER boss!!"
