Tony Gonzalez v. Shannon Sharpe v. Antonio Gates

Not expecting much on a Broncos forum

Those of us in the AFC West have seen them play as much as anyone.

Who do you take in his prime?

One has a trio of SB rings, with 2 different teams.

    The others have....nice stats.

I'm 100% sure I'd pick him either way (being a homer), but even objectively one contributed to 3 championships, the other 2 dont split even one between them.

    Shannon Sharpe

Tony Gonzales has had a bit more longevity, but has clearly lost it. He should retire. He should have retired before last year.

Antonio Gates may someday be the best, but he has a lot of years left

They're all very good, all likely Hall of Famers, but you gotta go with the guy with the rings, as Trench said.

    Honestly, Sharpe.
Not only does he have 3 rings, but the guy did it with 2 teams. After people claimed he was only good because of Elway.

He had one of if not the longest TD run by a Tight End.
He is the biggest draft steal ever, no matter what team he got drafted by, he would have still been a Hall of Famer.

Tony Gonzalez is the only TE that will ever come close to Sharpe, Tony is/was was very great TE, but not better than Sharpe.

Gates isn't even in the conversation.

That's like putting McNabb in the Marino, Moon, Elway, Favre conversations.

Sharpe defined the way the position is played, making Gates and Gonzalez viable options in an offense. Sharpe all the way.

Only one of the 3 helped revolutionized the position

Sharpe, although Gonzalez is a very close second in my eyes.

Gates is good, but he has the injury bug now.

I am just rehashing other answers but Sharpe has the rings, got the records first (of the three) and has a bust in Canton.

I might re-think this decision when all is played out with Gates and Gonzalez but you gotta look at the resume first and Sharpes stands out.

Like mentioned one has three rings with running teams, two different teams!, and retired the leader of all major offensive stats for TE.

The other two will pass him in stats but not in rings...not even rings combined.

This arguement worked against Elway so often it is nice to be able to play this card!

    easy choice, Sharpe.

If he was not so vocally abrasive Sharpe would have been in the HoF much sooner. He does not get the props he deserves because all the haters who got offended by the things he said.

Sharpe helped revolutionized the position and has 3 rings. Tony is close 2nd behind Sharpe due to his longevity. Gates is great but he has wise to go catch the other 2.

I wouldn't say that, but anyone that votes for Gates is dumb, no not because he's a Charger.

But because he is out classed by both Tony and Shannon.

Sharpe, not only for all of the reasons mentioned before, but also because he was y far the best blocker out of the three. So he was much closer to the "ideal" TE than Gonzalez and Gates, who are primarily used for their receiving abilities and are more like big WRs than true TEs.

Wouldn't complain about having to pick any of the three for my team, though.
