    Draft 2012: Chargers Edition

Okay football fans, who do you see AJ taking/abducting Snidely Whiplash style in the first round?

By all means vote but then be sure to share your thoughts in non-voting form below.

Me personally? I see Harrison Smith in the 1st round followed by whomever the Chargers feel is the best OLB available in the 2nd.

with peyton manning in the division now, its absolutly imparative we find a pass rush. i will be shocked if we dont draft a pass rushinbg specialist in the first round.

although i wouldnt totally object to going SS or OL in the first then picking up my boy Lavonte David in the second or third round lol

hes not a pass rushing specialist but he is an overall beast and would help a lot in the running and passing game.

he is a great tackler too.

I could not agree more. For the record I do blame Manusky for the pass rush woes. Don't get me wrong, Rivera had to get creative to create a pass rush when having to deal with having mediocre OLB's (read: I'm not saying we're stocked with talent at OLB, but I do blame sack production on Manusky).

All cards on the table, there is a great deal more evidence on your side than mine. A ton of OLB contracts expire after 2012 (Phillips, English and Barnes I believe). Which would leave us with Jarret Johnson and Darryl Gamble to my knowledge. For his part AJ is not one for leaving the future to chance, I will give him that so 2 OLB selections would not be surprising in the least.

Whereas at SS, we have Stucky a 4th rounder from 2010 (Injured for first year then stood out on special teams last year) and signed Atari Bigby to a 2 year contract. I'm sure Paul Oliver will be floating around somewhere as well.

The only reason I even say Harrison Smith is because I'm under the impression that Harrison has AJ written all over him.

I think I'm in the same boat you are; OLB, SS/Harrison Smith otherwise pass, OT. I wouldn't mind any of them in the 1st. It is interesting though everyone seems to have their own person at a certain position (moreso than usual anyway). Some want Upshaw, some Mercilus, don't even get me started on Nick Perry I had no idea I am surrounded by so many USC fans.

As for offensive linemen, I just don't see that happening in the 1st or 2nd really. Pro draftnicks love to stick us with WR's or OL, but does Kiper or McShay's word carry weight with anyone? I can see AJ reaching into UDFA to sort out backups/projects on the OL.

I don't watch college 'ball unless I'm stuck cleaning on a Saturday, so when I say I've done some light investigation into the pass rushers in the draft I'm shaming the word investigation. I'd love for the Chargers to walk away with Harrison Smith and Vinny Curry after round 2 but I doubt that will happen. I have to admit Lavonte David didn't even show up on my radar.

What position would you see him playing? We have Mouton backing up Spikes, and Williams backing up Butler on the inside.

He'll get a job somewhere then, no doubt.

He'd make a nice addition but I'm currently under the impression that we'd need to move up to get him.

Considering the effort AJ Smith has put into FA but NOT screwing the team over $-wise next year, I don't see him willing to touch the 2013 picks for trade up ammunition.

that's just me being a homer lol

he can rush the passer but he is a bit undersized. he would be more of a true OLB i think, he has a lot of speed and swarms to the ball.

we need more of merriman type LB'er that's big and nasty that can really put pressure on opposing teams QB's as well as command double teams which will open things up for other guys to get to the QB as well.

if we don't address that in the first round we are pretty screwed. we need a guy that can come in and be effective immediately.

but with AJ, you never know what they are going to do. all i know is if he does something odd(like trading up to get Mathews) it better involve getting a top tier pass rusher lol

I'm sure AJ will take a look at him, regardless of people agreeing with his decision making you have to admit he is thorough.

If you remove the "big" part of that you're really just describing a "good" OLB. I wouldn't even say "big" is a requirement especially after that year Elvis Dumervil had at OLB.

Don't get me wrong, long arms help, I just don't see it as required. A good pass rusher is hard to find, a good OLB (including coverage) is even harder, but maybe that's just me.

You know, most other years I would agree with you. I consider this year to be pretty fluky though. The Pass-Rushing class has a lot of tweeners, undersized (I am aware of the biting irony of this after the paragraph above but I'm talking about weight not height), and frankly just folks who are not agile/fluid enough to be a top tier OLB. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I am not impressed. People in San Diego seem to be chanting Perry's name but whenever I look at the kid I see a 4-3 DE (albeit a fluid one). That and I don't believe the talent gap from a 1st round OLB to a 2nd round OLB is very large at all this year. That's my take, I'd love to hear the thoughts of others on this subject.

I agree. Then again I'd just love to have English healthy for a single frickin' year.

he needs to be big and strong enough to fight off blocks. dumervil is short yes but he is still 260 lbs

my guy i am talking about is almost 30 lbs lighter than that. that's really the only knock on him, he's too light and he struggles with getting off blocks sometimes because of it.

but when allowed to run around and make plays in the passing game and in run defense, that is where he shines.

You never know with AJ lol, expect the unexpected.

They should take a pass rusher or OL. Safety class is kinda meh imo, decent group of pass rushers should be there for SD. Mercilus, Perry, and maybe Upshaw but i dunno if he'll get past the Jets.

If you don't go pass rusher in Rd 1, you gotta hope one falls to them in the 2nd..

AJ has made some interesting draft moves lately.

Honestly, I'll be happy with any of those positions. It will be extremely interesting to see how the pass rushers get divvied up.

You are right about the safety class, unfortunately that just means the position is at a premium. I will admite that many of the teams I have earmarked looking for pass rushers are also looking for safeties. So it could be a wild one. Probably why AJ is going nuts in FA, I think he wants to have his bases covered so he can move around and grab "his guys" in the draft.

I still just get a "meh" feeling from the whole draft class really, aside from DT's that is.

I've been looking at pass rusher's that have been slotted for round 2, it makes for interesting reading to say the least (especially with the latest Kiper mock putting Jones in the first round to SD no less...though he is no 1st round pick to me). Chandler Jones, Vinny Curry, Shea McClellin were all considered 2nd rounders months ago but all 3 have slowly been rising.

The past couple of years I have been doing REALLY well as to predicting the positions the Chargers would draft in the 1st round. However, this year I need to admit that I am absolutely stumped.

While I would not mind a player in the secondary, it must be mentioned that we need new meat at OLB...an Ahab to Peyton Manning's "white whale." New blood on the DL would not hurt and I like quite a few of the DT prospects. Many DL players are on 1 year contracts.

So yeah, everywhere on defense could use help and the OL could use a hand or 2 as well. I'd love to pick up a tackle that could show Clary the door. Then again, I <3 David DeCastro and I think all the guy slated to replace Dielman and the backup guard are on 1 year contracts. I do not want to waste a pick on a WR after we have signed so darn many. We have a growing cadre of TE's too. While I like Brinkley I'd like to pick up Hillman.

So there it is, my incredibly "not too vague at all" draft predictions. BPA may actually be in the cards.

                              AIN'T IT THE TRUTH!

I have to admit I was on the road when the pick came in. I was chanting "DeCastro" in my car.

Don't get me wrong I like Ingram but to me DeCastro felt like a sure thing. Kind of gun shy when it comes to pass rushers.

Normally it seems like we choose between the lesser of two evils, this time we had to choose between cake or pie so we should enjoy it while we can.

Would have liked to pick up H. Smith too, but apparently I was not the only person who thought he would make an impact.
