    Andy Griffith Dead @ 86

Some of us on here might be to young to remember this guy but he is a legend and gave us a lot of memories!! Thanks for the memories........ Rest In Peace!!

Andy Griffith, an icon of TV, has died ... this according to Andy's close friend, former UNC President Bill Friday.

Griffith, who became famous for "The Andy Griffith Show," passed away at his home in Manteo, North Carolina this morning.

Friday broke the news to WITN News in North Carolina.

In addition to starring in his show and the subsequent "Mayberry R.F.D.," Griffith was a Grammy award-winning southern gospel singer. Of course, Griffith also starred in the long-running series, "Matlock" and often made guest appearances in other shows, including "Dawson's Creek."

There's a famous statue of Andy and Opie -- played by Ron Howard -- in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Griffith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.

The earliest Andy Griffith I remember was his standup "What it was was football", a hillbilly seeing a football game for the first time. The next one I can remember was No Time for Sergeants. Requiescat in pace, Andy.

Another part of my childhood ... gone.

Although it was made way before I was born I used to watch reruns on WTBS all the time.

Andy Griffith, Gilligan's ISland, My Three Sons amongst others were all on in the morning in the summer time. Used to watch them religiously.

I posted in the epic Peyton's NeckBones thread and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt!

    R.I.P. Andy.

My Grandpa died when I was young, but one of my fondest memories was watching the afternoon reruns of the Andy Griffith Show with him.

My dad liked "The Andy Griffith Show". I grew up watching him. I'll miss him. Another sad death this year
