    2014 Season Thread

The Denver Outlaws season begins on 4/26 on the road this year. The Outlaws have not lost a regular season game since June of 2012, which is absurd, but they still can't seem to win the big one.

They've been the #1 or #2 seed in the playoffs literally all eight years the team has existed but they've never won the championship.

Last year they had an undefeated regular season but lost in the first round of the playoffs. So Pat Bowlen replaced the head coach and the team traded their MVP, plus drafted some Denver University prospects.

I'm just going to keep this one thread bumped all year as there doesn't seem to be enough interest in lacrosse for an individual topic for every game.

I made this schedule graphic with the game locations, start times, and broadcast information for anyone who wants to follow along:

The youtube games are broadcast live, for free on youtube.com/tln

The CBS games are live on CBS Sports Network

The ESPN3 games are live on WatchESPN.com

And Altitude television usually picks up some of the games after the Mammoth/Avs/Nuggets seasons end.

Game one is tonight, and it should be over just in time to watch the Avs.

You can find the game at www.youtube.com/tln tonight at 5:00.

Outlaws won their home opener against the Ohio Machine today, 14-12.

Today was a special Star Wars theme game. The visiting Machine came in Stromtrooper jerseys representing the Empire, while the Outlaws came in the orange X-Wing Pilot jerseys. All the jerseys were signed and will be auctioned off on eBay, with all proceeds going to charity.

That makes the Outlaws 2-0 on the year, and winners of 22 consecutive regular season games (going all the way back to June 2012).

Next game is Saturday in Boston against the Cannons.

Outlaws needed overtime, but they picked up yet another road win against the Boston Cannons, 10-9. That makes 23 straight regular season wins.

Next game is a home contest on Saturday against the Rochester Rattlers.

24 regular season wins in a row.

The second longest winning streak in league history is seven games. This is the highest level of field lacrosse played anywhere in the world, and the Outlaws are completely dominant. They really need some more love around here, especially since the only other teams playing in town right now are the Rockies (woo!) and Rapids (snore...).

They play lights out during the regular season, but need to translate that into championships. They can't have an undefeated regular season only to lose without even getting to the championship match.

Believe me, I know. I've followed the team since they got here. The last two years in particular were heartbreaking. Two years ago they lost the league MVP in the semifinal game, but still managed to erase a ten goal deficit to win that game (then promptly got smashed by the Bayhawks in the finals). And last year, going undefeated and then getting bounced in the first round by a team they had trounced twice in the regular season.

4-8 all time in the playoffs, 0-4 all time in the finals. Feel bad, man.

And the Mammoth haven't won a single playoff game since their 2006 championship.

Hopefully DU gets it done in the Final Four this weekend and gets us a title.

But I really do think this year could be different for the Outlaws. Bringing in John Grant Jr was huge for them, as he has won multiple major lacrosse championships (4 MLL, 1 NLL, 5 Canadian Senior A titles, 3 World Lacrosse Championships, etc).

We also got tougher on defense. And by the time our next game comes we'll have all of our players who had missed the start of the year because of the NLL (Zack Greer) or NCAA seasons (DU star Jamie Noble).

And finally, they changed the playoff format. Instead of playing the semis and finals on back to back days in one stadium like they used to, the playoffs now take place over two weeks (semis one week, finals next) and the higher seed gets one home playoff game. That really favors us because we play in front of the biggest crowds, we play at altitude, and our veteran team could use the extra rest.

The Outlaws won yet again last night, beating the Charlotte Hounds at home by a score of 13-11.

That puts them at 5-0 on the season and runs their regular season winning streak to a staggering 25 games. Again, the second longest streak in league history was 7 games.

In the history of major and mid-major North American pro sports (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, WNBA, NLL, AFL, NLL, CFL) there have only been two longer streaks: the 1916 MLB Giants (26 games) and the 1971-72 LA Lakers (33 games).

The Outlaws travel to Charlotte next Saturday to take on the Hounds yet again.

The MLL Playoffs begin this Saturday, and for the first time ever the Outlaws will get to play at home. Unfortunately there is a scheducle conflict at Mile High, so they will have to play at Denver University's lacrosse stadium.

The game is at 3:30 PM Mountain Time on Saturday, 8/16. It will also be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.

The Outlaws will play the New York Lizards, with whom they split their regular season series. The Outlaws won 16-11 in Denver and lost 12-11 in OT at New York.

This is a semifinal game, and the winner takes on the winner of Ohio @ Rochester in the finals on 8/23.

The Outlaws have been in the playoffs all nine seasons they've been here, but they've never broken through and won it all. Hopefully this is the year they finally do, and they can send owner Pat Bowlen off with his first MLL championship to go with his two Super Bowl rings. Bowlen has meant just as much to the Outlaws as he has to the Broncos, and even though he's no longer involved in the day to day operations of either team I'd bet he'd still like to see them win.

    Agreed!
Let's hope the Outlaws can finally bring home the championship.
