Bye bye Darrell Scott

Scott Leaving CU Football Program

BOULDER — Sophomore running back Darrell Scott informed his coaches Tuesday afternoon of his intent to leave the University of Colorado football program.

Head coach Dan Hawkins said Scott, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound tailback from Ventura, Calif., is leaving for assorted personal reasons and assumed he would be transferring closer to his Southern California home.

Scott had been bothered by injuries throughout his brief Colorado career. Most recently, he had arthroscopic knee surgery on Oct. 22 to clean up some cartilage after first injuring the knee in the second game of the season at Toledo.

He had 23 carries for 95 yards for the season, most of those coming in the Toledo game, when he carried 12 times for 85 yards. He had 10 carries for nine yards in the next three games prior to undergoing surgery. He was targeting this Saturday’s game against Texas A & M as his potential return date, though team medical officials thought the Nov. 14 Iowa State game was appearing more realistic.

He was CU’s leader in all-purpose yards with 694, the bulk coming on kickoff returns, as he had 21 for 564 yards and a 26.9 average. He set a school record for the most kickoff return yards in a game with 204 on eight returns at Toledo.

He entered the fall as one of four players in a most competitive deadlock at tailback. He was the recipient of the Fred Casotti Award as the most improved offensive back during spring ball, as selected by the coaching staff, but the injury limited him to three starts.

As a freshman, he saw action in 11 games, including one start (at Iowa State); he missed one full game and parts of others due to groin and ankle injuries. He finished second on the team in rushing with 343 yards, picking those up on 87 carries for a 3.9 average per rush, and scored one touchdown.

Scott was widely considered the nation’s top running back prospect in the 2007 recruiting class, earning top All-America honors from Parade, USA Today, Prep Star and SuperPrep among a host of other accolades he earned at St. Bonaventure High School.

If he plans on pursuing his football career at another school, Scott will coordinate the paperwork through CU’s compliance office, which will also conduct an official exit interview.

NOTE: Check back this evening for more on this story from CUBuffs.com's B.G. Brooks, who will have comments from Darrell, coaches and players.

Where do you guys think he ends up? CU, Texas and UCLA were his top 3 coming out of high school...think he ends up at either one of those? It'll be interesting to see what he can do at another school.

He will only have one year of eligibility left, so it might be tough to find an upper echeleon school willing to pick him up.

Very disappointing that he is going, but, he never really found his groove here.

He will be going to UCLA to follow his cousin, Smith. And I thought he would have 2 years of elgibility left since he didnt red shirt his freshman year.

He won't be able to play next year if he transfers, which he hasn't said he was doing, and since he is under scholarship from CU still, they impose on him which schools he can't go to.

I think as it plays out we will find out how the Colorado Ath. Dept. really feels about Scott.

He has now used 2 years of eligibility. He will lose one on the transfer, and then he will have the one remaining. If he had redshirted his freshman year, I doubt he would have been back this year at all. He would have left with Smith at that moment.

CU cant afford to try and punish players at this point. Scott's mismanagement here probably has already started to scare off recruits, no reason to show that we also have a vindictive athletic department. As long as he isnt trying to get to a Big 12 school, I dont think we block him.

I guess he could always go JuCo for a year then back to a school of his choice without having to sit out a season. Seems to be a reasonable idea.

The only bad part about that, for him at least, is if he goes the JC route and gets hurt, his visions of a pro career are over. They might be anyway.

Poor kid, I actually feel for him. Top RB in the country goes to a crap school to be the Big Fish and ends up getting hurt and running away with his tail tucked?

That sucks.

I feel bad for him too That's why when he plays his last year of college I'll be rooting for him to beast it up and maybe he'll be a mid round pick
